IAUC 8976 announces that the CSBN and the WGPSN
have accepted the name "Haumea" for the TNO 2003 EL61.
This was the name proposal of the self-proclaimed discoverers
Brown et al., not of the official discoverers Ortiz et al.
I don't know if this is the first time that the CSBN stripped off
the discoverer's naming rights. But this time it became very
obvious what this old men's club gives about rules and fairness.
Brown et al. did not report any astrometric line to the MPC
until the object was nearly numbered. Yet they had the arrogance to
claim discovery credit and to request naming rights, and due to their
personal connections to Brian Marsden, the CSBN secretary,
their name proposal was pushed in CSBN and finally favoured and
accepted over the discoverer's proposal.
Actually Marsden announced his unjust intentions already in
his Sept. 15, 2005 CCNet article: "Presumably, matters can be
taken care of--and without a lot of fanfare--when 2003 EL61 is given
a permanent number and name."
In the economy such a behaviour is called "corruption".
Congratulations gentlemen!
So far, MPC lists Ortiz et al. as discoverers of (136108) 2003 EL61.
It wouldn't surprise me if Brown and his puppy are trying to falsify the
MPC records too.
