using resisitors will not work it will interfere with peak current. Try a few diodes they will let through all the current while dropping the voltage .7 each....

Thats odd the read outs should be 86 to 120 in the configuration you describe. Since with no IR the sensor reads 86 it sounds like you hacked it properly....
