This is relatively easy, use a program like clit.exe
(http://www.convertlit.com/download.php) to convert the lit file to
html and then go from there, you can load the html directly into
word if you want or use one of the many html converters.

Hmm, if you have the word document, you can use
http://www.primopdf.com/ and print your document as
pdf. Printing the LIT itself might help too.
LIT is nicer when you are reading in PDA with its
small screen.

Hi there,
I have been following the threads here - most of them talk about
conversion from PDF or Microsoft Word to LIT - my Question is, is it
possible to convert a LIT file to PDF or Microsoft Word?
I do not really enjoy reading using MReader, and will prefer to use
PDF - or conversion from MReader to MWord, and then I can convert from
MWord to PDF after?
Any help will be much appreciated! Thank you in advance!
Cheers,

Subject: [ms_reader] Can anyone help
Dear Friends,
I am seetharaman, i am in a conversion field for almost 3 years,
but i dont know about MS Reader. I involved in conversion of SGML and
XML relevant projects. For the first time i was asked to take care of
MS Reader. I dont know about this software. Can anyone help me to know
about this software and the following details.
1. What kind of input and what is the output?
You can use html, txt, or doc
2. Is it a free software or licensed software?
There's a free .doc to .lit converter from microsoft. For commercial purpose,
you can use Mobipochet publisher. I prefer this one, since we can work with text
and graphics almost effortlessly.
There are several others. Those two are the most commonly used I believe.
3. What are skills required to work on this software?
Typing and reading? :-)
4. What are all the process involved to convert one kind of input to the
desired output.
Editing, spell-checking, formatting... automatic convertion.
Please help me on the above. You can reach through my mobile and my
number is 09444457110.
Thanks,

Tja MSReader,
I use it on my PC. that's kind of stupid, because it uses only a small part
of my screen while Adobe for instance uses the whole. The readability by
Msreader is not very good. You become tired after a while and start thinking
the book is not very nice, even if it is very nice. You can't print. The
possibilty to let the book be read by voice is horrible. There is no
intonation what so ever you must be a masochist to use that. It is not
better in Adobe anyhow.
It is a good thing there are many free books. With the help of Abc Amber
lit. converter you can change most of them to Adobe books.
I' m from holland there are not very many books in Dutch. That is an
disadvantice. But that 's for all kinds of eBooks.
At the moment i like Adobe most. I think that Microsoft and Adobe think
ebooks is just a faillure and they are not interrested. I think that is
wrong.
But i think .lit and .pdf are not the latest words.
Greetings
Martin

Very book-like, but easier to navigate. And it's free! Just a single drawback,
though: there's no Palm version of it, so--in some cases--I do not convert my
txt files to .lit books to make sure I can read them in any platforms. For this
purpose, I prefer the other reader (see below).
My other favorite eBook reader is eReader (used to be called PalmReader). This
one is available in both format: PPC and Palm (or four if we include Mac and
Windows).
Another good reader is MobiPocket Reader. IMHO, not as elegant as the other two.
But, it's available in PPC and Palm also. And better still, the developer gives
you the converter too: MobiPocket Publisher, with which, you can publish in any
of your choice: .lit (MS Reader), or .prc (unreadable by eReader,
unfortunately).
There are several other popular eBook readers like uBook (mju Book), Tiny
Reader, etc., which I don't use as frequently. So, I cannot give much info
about.
However, I never see choosing an eBook reader is some kind of commitment, since
they don't ask for a "til death do us apart" oath from you.
My advice is: be a poligamist. :-)

Downloaded Reader for both the laptop and iPAQ and have them up and
running, however when I attempt to activate at best (I actually gave
up and uninstalled one copy on all the machines) I get a blank page
after signing in with Passport - that grinds on and on forever without
results.
Appears that MS has also deleted all their online communities and shut
off support to all kinds of products. Not a good way to run a business
built on the good opinion of it's users!!
There's nothing in the Knowledge database or FAQs online and reading
your archives I don't come up with the "blank" page phenomenon. Yes, I
have deleted all the files, used Explorer after reopening, etc. Read
everything I can find and tried all the various "tricks" tips and
solutions to no avail..
The first time around I was able to get activation on the desktop
(ONLY) never on the iPAQ.... Now nothing on either.
Anyone got any sugggestions?

We originally obtained the program that way, and have downloaded it again
recently (repair) but since updating to Word 2003 the conversion to LIT
always fails. It seems to go through the process and then we get the error
message:
"Unable to build eBook (Error 66 Unrecognized CSS Directive: '@list.' This
content would fail on the original Pocket PC version of the Reader, and must
not appear in files compatible with that version.)
No one at Microsoft will do anything. Perhaps we will have to return to Word

Hello,
We use the LIT conversion program and are able to offer conversion services
from DOC to LIT.
But not maintenance on the conversion program itself...
Perhaps we may help ?

Quick Summary (including how to subscribe):
-------------------------------------------
You are invited to subscribe and participate in one or both of the
following discussion groups (hosted at YahooGroups) supporting the
ongoing activities of the OpenReader Consortium:
1) "openreader-format": OpenReader Format Specification (an
open-standards ebook and digital publication/document
distribution format), and
2) "openreader-devel": Development of an open-source, license-free,
multi-platform reference implementation of an OpenReader reading
system ("user agent").
(Both projects will be summarized in the next section. For more
detailed information, refer to http://www.openreader.org/ .)
If you have a supportive interest in either topic, we invite you to
subscribe to the group of interest. (Those who subscribe to the "user
agent development" group are strongly urged to also subscribe to the
Format group.)
By joining either of these groups, there is no implied commitment to
become an active participant in either of the associated Working
Groups, although we certainly hope you will. We welcome your thoughts
and insights, even if you choose not to actively participate in formal
Working Group activities.
The home pages to the two groups are found at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/openreader-format/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/openreader-devel/
There is a link to subscribe to each group at the group's home page.
Or, you can subscribe to either using the following email addresses:
openreader-format-subscribe@yahoogroups.comopenreader-devel-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
If you prefer not to go through the process of subscribing yourself to
either group, I'll be more than happy to subscribe you. Just email me
(jon@... or jon@...) your request to join -- be
sure to specify which group(s) -- along with the email address you
want to use to receive group messages.
More Detailed Information about OpenReader:
-------------------------------------------
As noted in the prior section, the best online resource explaining
OpenReader is the current OpenReader web site (planned to soon undergo
a much-needed major update and upgrade):
http://www.openreader.org/
OpenReader is a cooperative project to create an open, standards-based
digital publication distribution format to facilitate current,
continuing, and long-term access to ebooks and other types of digital
publications and documents.
The OpenReader distribution format will be based on well-established
XML vocabularies, publication frameworks, and W3C technologies. This
includes OEBPS (the Open eBook Publication Structure framework),
XHTML, CSS, MathML, SVG and XLink, to name the more important ones.
Our current plans also include eventual native support for TEI,
NewsML, and possibly other advanced and specialized document markup
vocabularies and publication frameworks.
The OpenReader Consortium will also support the development of
reference implementations of programs to render OpenReader-compliant
documents on a number of devices, and to convert OpenReader-compliant
documents to other publication formats, such as PDF/A.
There is a clear need for such a distribution format, given the
present anarchy of multiple, incompatible, inflexible, and proprietary
publication formats which do not provide the reading experience
consumers want and publishers strive for. David Rothman, in his
TeleRead blog covering the ebook, digital library, and related
industries (http://www.teleread.org/blog/), aptly describes this
situation as the "Tower of eBabel".
While the initial focus of the OpenReader Consortium is primarily on
ebooks, we intend to make the distribution format flexible enough to
be applicable to a wide variety of digital publications and documents,
such as periodicals, newspapers, document collections, white papers,
many types of business documents, etc. We even envision the OpenReader
format to be quite useful for encapsulating and archiving standards-
conformant Web sites.
When the HTML format and HTTP protocol were developed more than a
decade ago, NCSA developed a "web browser", Mosaic, to support the
format and protocol. The success of the World Wide Web was due as much
to the wide-spread availability of the NCSA Mosaic browser, as it was
to the openness and availability of the HTML and HTTP specifications.
Similarly, we believe that it is important to develop, in conjunction
with the OpenReader Format, a cross-platform, open-source,
license-free reference implementation of an OpenReader rendering
program, which will make the OpenReader Format Specification truly
useful, to establish uniform rendering behavior, and to spur others
to build their own conforming OpenReader user agents.
*****
We look forward to your joining either or both groups, even if to
lurk. If you know of others who may be interested in OpenReader, feel
free to forward this announcement to them. We are also building a
Consortium of interested companies and organizations in the digital
publication and document universe who see the open-standards
OpenReader as furthering their business and institutional
objectives. Of course, we are looking for dedicated individuals, who
agree with the OpenReader philosophy, to become leaders and help to
make OpenReader a success.
Thanks.

OpenReader Consortium

I just noticed when I opened my Reader yesterday it says I acquired all
my books yesterday. I had books sorted by acquired date so that could
read the ones I have had the longest first. Has anyone had this
problem before? I ran a virus check and a spyware check and found
nothing. Any suggestions? Is this a glich I should be worried about?
Dear Friends,
We are from Indian and part of a business group with interests in
shipping and in BPO sector.
AS you are aware, BPO sector is growing in leaps and bounds in India
because the (1) cost of manpower is very very less compared to that
of developed countries (2) Quality human resources available who are
really hard working and committed (3) Availablity of good English
knowing manpower.
With the 3 main advantages to our side, we have started the BPO
venture from being in the shipping industry for over a decade.
As you may be aware that there are lot of companies which are engaged
in conversion of paper books to ebooks format and selling them on
website and also for making them be able to be "text" searched.
There is a lot of scope in this business and some part of the above
conversion is human oriented and cannot be done by
computers/automation.
The main work involves scanning the hardbook into pdf or jpg files,
conversion to editable format (such as ms-word) and additing xml tags
and further processing to be made to ebooks.
We are now engaged in conversion from scanned images (pdf/jpg/gif) to
editable text (ms-word) which is hugely human oriented. Those of you
already familiar with this would know that even the best OCR software
cannot be trusted for good conversion and it WILL require a human
person to check the scanned pages word by word with the editable text.
We propose to take up such conversion from scanned images to ms-word
documents with word-by-word human checking.
