If you mean the user manual, you can download a pdf version from
http://minidisc.amulation.com/part_Manuals.html

This site has the manuals for just about every MiniDisc machine ever produced.

Hello everyone,

Does anyone else out there use Sony's MMD-140A disks with their multitrack?

I recently bought these instead of the HHB disks I usually buy and
those awkward people at Sony put them in storage cases of a different
size to regular minidiscs. The HHB data disks have jewel cases the
same size as regular minidiscs but not the Sony ones, oh no. They're
in a bigger case that doesn't fit in my storage rack.

Anyone found such a thing as a rack or case designed for Sony MDDs?

With nothing better to do,

Steve

I bought the zippered cases that hold 24 MiniDiscs and put all mine in these. I
don't use the jewel cases, I just pitch them.

Hope this helps,

Dave

When I bought my Sony recorder, it came with a box of 5
MMD-140A discs. They're the only ones I've ever used.

I don't know about the Sony machines, but Yamaha's MDD multitrackers
don't have any system for backing up recording data except on the
actual MDD used for the recording itself.

Most of the current range of digital multitrackers have an option to
transfer data to an external drive via USB, SCSI or whatever, but this
facility is not available to those who use Yamaha MDD machines.

Unless you're prepared to delete the multitrack recording data, which
I'm not as I might want to come back to it at a later date, more than
five MDDs are needed.

I could sell my MD4, relatively low use, upgraded to the latest
firmware.

I'm in Alabama.

I somtimes have trouble deleting stuff too. But, I find it nice to
dump stuff every now and then. Hell if I didn't, I'd have hundreds of
discs... . Just the other day i tossed a draw full of old 4 track
cassettes i'd been saving for who knows what. Now with mp3 i just
make a copy if its good and store it on a hard drive.

so five discs....its all i need.
cleaned off a disc today...nice and fresh ready to go

I might sell my Yamaha MD8 if you made a good offer. I live in the
north of England.

I'd be especially interested in selling it as a complete recording
system package including the following effects processors:

** Alesis 3630 (compressor/limiter/noise gate - see
http://www.alesis.com/products/3630/index.html)

** Behringer Virtualizer Pro DSP 1000P (multi-effects unit - see
http://www.behringer.com/DSP1024P/index.cfm?lang=ENG)

** Behringer Modulizer Pro DSP 1200P (multi-effects unit that includes
excellent guitar amp simulations and lots of left-field stuff - see
http://www.behringer.com/DSP1200P/index.cfm?lang=ENG)

** Behringer Ultramizer Pro DSP 1400P (loudness maximiser, used for
putting more oomph into final master recordings - see
http://www.behringer.com/DSP1400P/index.cfm?lang=ENG)

Anyone interested should contact me off-list at smcooke@...

Hi everyone
Same old story.....
Managed to get the cover off!..But the disc drawer wont open..so the
disc is still jammed inside, any suggestions please!!!((Error 08))
I have read some of the messages prior to this and have noted that
leaving discs in the drive whilst not using it seems to be the main
reason for this happening, which has been a useful bit of knowledge
if I ever get this sorted out.
Also if anyone knows where I can get this repaired within the
Birmingham area UK.. If I have too, the only place I have tried is
charging £35.00 per hour and they are a little bit concerned it would
take a while as it was so introcate and knowing they have to go
careful with it incase they damage the drive.
Any tips or info..would be more than welcome

Hi out there!

I would really appreciate some advice. I am going travelling for a few months to
write
some songs and I need something to record my ideas, mostly vocals, acoustic
guitar and a
harmonica, also, a Yamaha QY70.
Therefore, I am looking for a really small 4 track minidisc recorder, which I
can feed a mic
into and get a decent recording quality. Also, I will want to hear what I'm
recording.
bare in mind, I am back packing, so it needs to be very small and light if it's
gonna work.
Any advice, links etc. would be much appreciated.

If this is an MDM, then there's supposed to be a small hole in the
plastic near the drive where you can poke in a paper clip and force
the drive to open, just like a CD drive.

If this is also an MDM, and it's stuck in an odd "there's no disk
here/yes there is" then it might be possible that there's a firmware
revision that will upgrade it to fix the problem. Happens mostly on
MD 2 track disks recorded and formatted by consumer equipment.

There are a few rather new small systems that seem ideal for your endeavor however, they store on Flash memory cards. If you are doing a good deal of recording you have to either manage your space well and/or have a few ($$) extra cards available.

That is why many of us prefer the minidisc format. Although there are several nice very portable minidisc recorders, I have not seen a multitrack version.

Good luck - KM

I had a disk get stuck in the drive. It was one that was formatted on
a 2 track commercial unit. The MD4 acted as if there was no disk, yet
would not eject it.

There's a problem with a version of the firmware, since it has a bug
in it that apparently permits this.

I called/mailed Sony, and they said that there was an upgrade for the
internal firmware.

They sent the EPROM for free.

If you have that problem, you take the bottom off, then simply replace
the EPROM chip in the motherboard. You will probably be appalled at
the construction inside....

Thanks.  If I read this correctly, you're saying that the only upgrades are ones that correct problems -- and if I don't have the problem, I guess I shouldn't/don't need to upgrade.

Essentially, yes. The main thing is would they send you the part, and
if so, would it be free?

There isn't one.

There are some tiny solid state memory based devices that will do this.
Capacity is limited but you can copy your stereo mix to MD (2-track MD
recorders are tiny and plentiful, of course) and re-use the solid state
memory for your next song.

Much as I'm loathe to be disloyal to the MiniDisc format, I think that
Zoom's SmartMedia card-based 'palmtop studio' PS-04 would be more
suited to your purposes.

Never tried one myself, but the Zoom PS-04 really does look the business.

The MDM is the Sony MDM-X4, the Sony 4 track version. The firmware
bug is unique to the Sony, although there might be that little hole
for the disk.

I have a Yamaha MD-8 and experience the error 08 when I put a disk in after first powering up the deck when it has sat idle for a few days. Usually I just slide the cover off and pop the latch then reset it (push it back down and latch) and all is fine.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Take it to the dealer you bought it from and they'll send it to Yamaha

Or you can call Yamaha and simply send it there yourself. Might be
cheaper that way, get a quote or two.
