RE: [mugwa] Mosfets and relays and nasty spikes what reset your micro
The problem with high voltage spikes is
that they can travel along active wires and also ground wires. Using a ferrite bead
can work.
However using a Solid state relay achieves
2 main objectives. One, being opto-coupled it completely isolates the control
and power wiring.
Two, If a zero crossing version is
suitable it may eliminate the cause of the spikes in the first place.
A combination of the two methods works
even better.

relays and nasty spikes what reset your micro
Hello People I don't know if anybody remembers but a year or
two ago I had problems with turning relays on and off resulting in micro
resets. I was using a mtp30055vl to switch the relay with an extra diode
complimenting the inherent one but still getting resets. Dave came
up with a theory about gate avalanching and spikes and stuff and
suggested a transorb as that had fixed his problem with the bore pump. Andrew S
suggested that I might use a resistor pair so that it took real
current to turn on the mosfet. And Ron suggested using solid state relays
instead. I have tried all of these methods and combinations of them as
well, they all work.
It just occurred to me (which is why I'm firing
off this message) that maybe a ferrite bead on the wire back to the micro
board would also have worked. What do you fellers think?
... I might be tempted to. I have an old C64 SID (sound chip) hooked up to an AT90S8535 with LCD and rotary encoder. Its ugly, but its working. :) adrian...
