Workshop on Multiagent Learning
The goal of this workshop is to increase awareness and interest in
adaptive agent research, encourage collaboration between ML experts
and agent system experts, and give a representative overview of
current research in the area of adaptive agents. The workshop will
serve as an inclusive forum for the discussion on ongoing or completed
work in both theoretical and practical issues. To be held 9-10 July
2005 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Papers due 20 April 2005.

Sprawling systems teeter on IT chaos
The UK government is spearheading a 10 million programme
aimed at finding ways to avert catastrophic failures in large IT
networks....there is a real danger that such massive interconnected
systems will exhibit potentially disastrous "emergent behaviours",
says David Cliff of Hewlett-Packard's laboratory in Bristol, UK, who
along with Seth Bullock at the University of Leeds wrote the report
that prompted the government to address the issue.

Cruise Control and Traffic Flow
Physicist L. Craig Davis of the University of Michigan has used
computer simulations, applying concepts from statistical mechanics, to
study how the use of adaptive cruise-control technology might affect
traffic flow. He reports his results in the June Physical Review
E....Intriguingly, at an average speed of 67 miles per hour, if only
one in five vehicles used adaptive cruise control, no traffic jams
would form and traffic would generally flow freely.

OWL-S Submission Published at W3C
The OWL Web Ontology Language for Services (OWL-S) has been
officially submitted to and and accepted by the W3C as a member
submission. The submission is described as: "This submission contains
a proposal for a Web Services description language, the Web Ontology
Language for Services (OWL-S), which builds on Semantic Web technology
developed at W3C. OWL-S is an OWL-based Web service ontology, which
supplies a core set of markup language constructs for describing the
properties and capabilities of Web services in unambiguous,
computer-interpretable form. OWL-S markup of Web services will
facilitate fuller automation of Web service tasks, such as Web service
discovery, execution, composition and interoperation."

Joint Intentions in Halo 2
An interview with Chris Butcher, designer of the AI agents in Halo
2. "The AI posts a joint behavior, 'I notice both of us are looking for
the same guy. I want to tell you something about him and I want you to
respond to me.' or, 'We're both looking for the same guy. Let's work
together to find him so that we can jump out and surprise him
together....The challenge with AI in games right now is, 'What are the
boundaries of AI? How do we hide those boundaries from the player? And
how do we go beyond them?'"

CCGrid 2005
CCGrid2005, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society (final approval
pending), is designed to bring together international leaders who are
pioneering researchers, developers, and users of clusters, networks,
and Grid architectures and applications. The symposium will also serve
as a forum to present the latest work, and highlight related
activities from around the world. Papers due 1 December 2004. To be
held 9-12 May 2005 in Cardiff, UK.
