Hi all,

As you are probably aware the annual Multiliteracies course for 2007
is at mid-stride, with more information linked from:
http://www.homestead.com/prosites-vstevens/files/efi/papers/tesol/ppot/portal200\
7.htm

You are probably aware of this.

However, I feel the Moodle is a little problematic this time around
and I'm going to ask participants to sign up to this list.

You might wonder why not start a new one? Well, it's because if you
are on the list I should assume you are interested in the subject and
discussion and you might want to follow the emails. These aren't many
this time around, just a few a week can be anticipated.

Now, if you are on the list and don't want to be bothered with these
mails, this is your notice of a slight perturbation possibly coming
your way. Take steps accordingly, and if you need help with anything
let me know (here or offlist :-)

Vance

Hi all,

This is just to let you know that this YahooGroup to which you are
subscribed will be getting active soon. You are welcome to remain on
board and join in or simply sit back and observe. There is more
information at our homepage http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/multilit/

If you opt to remain on this list, you have the further option of
setting your mail delivery preferences to individual mails, daily
digests, or web reading only. Since the group messages are public you
can also subscribe to the group RSS feed in an aggregator such as
Google Reader (and you don't have to be a group member to do that ;-)

The course this time around will be wider ranging than before and more
an exploration of the tools than the concepts, though there will be
much content in evidence. That is, there will be more of a
connectivist approach in that the pipes might be considered more
important than what's in them. I realize that's my viewpoint, but
anyone could take the content as having greater focus, and that would
be up to the beholder.

If you're along for the ride, this is just a note to warn you to brace
yourself (or to relax and endure a little more email than usual - at
present there are fewer than 40 subscribers to this group; that number
could double).

Best,
Vance

Hi everyone,

Further to the message I sent earlier, I have created a welcome
message that will be sent to anyone who joins this group from this day
forward until Jan 2, 2009. I think the message is self-explanatory.

If you are with us from a previous rendition of this course, welcome
back. And if you've just joined us before this message was created,
then WELCOME and here is what to expect between now and January.

Here's the message:

Hello,

Welcome to the multilit group at Yahoo! Groups.

You have joined the listserv for the EVO Session for 2009
"Multiliteracies for Social Networking and Collaborative Learning
Environments. For more information please visit our portal at:
http://goodbyegutenberg.pbwiki.com/

Please note that the EVO sessions do not start until January, 2009.
If the moderators accept you in the group before the starting date it
is to save you the inconvenience of having to come back later, but
please understand that the EVO sessions do not start until January,
and therefore your messages to this list may or not be answered before
that time.

The period from January 2 to 11th 2009 is meant to be a sign-up
period. This is when the group or community or network (we'll
investigate any differences later) is supposed to form.
Communications during this time may be limited as well, though
messages sent at this time should be attended to.

The sessions will start January 12. This is when you would want to
send in your introduction, sometime shortly after this date.

Please note that we have a syllabus at:
http://goodbyegutenberg.pbwiki.com/Syllabus_Outline
You might want to make note in your online calendar for our events:

Hi everyone,

This is just to let you know that this group is filling with new
members now. Each person who signs up from today will receive this
message as an automatic welcome. I'll post the message here so that
all can see it.

Happy new year to all

New welcome msg
----------------------------

Welcome to the multilit group at Yahoo! Groups.

You have joined the listserv for the EVO Session for 2009
"Multiliteracies for Social Networking and Collaborative Learning
Environments. For more information please visit our portal at:
http://goodbyegutenberg.pbwiki.com/

The period from January 2 to 11, 2009 is meant to be a sign-up period.
This is when the group (or community, or network: we'll investigate
any differences later) is supposed to form. Communications during
this time will be attended to, but note that EVO sessions officially
start January 12.

In order that all who wish to participate will receive your messages,
this is when you should send in your introduction, or shortly after
this date.

It happens that two of the 4 moderators in this session have holidays
the first two weeks in January. We will of course be open for
activity and discussion from Jan 12, but the last moderator returns
home Jan 17, so if the session seems to be starting slowly, don't
worry, it will pick up from the 17th.

Meantime, you can be exploring our syllabus at:

Hello, everyone.

On behalf of Vance, Nelba, Jennifer, Doris, and João, welcome to the
2009 Multiliteracies EVO session!

Although the seminar won't formally begin until January 12th, a number
of participants have already registered, and each of you is probably
wondering what you can do right now. If that's the case, here are some
suggestions:

1. Click on the Files section (in the left-hand sidebar menu) and
download the syllabus overview; it's a one-page .pdf (Adobe Acrobat)
file. It's brief, but it mentions a number of key terms and concepts
for this seminar. If any of these items are new to you, do some
websurfing to see what you can learn about how these terms are
currently being used.

2. Take our preassessment survey. We're using this online tool to
get a clearer idea about you as a group, including geographical
distribution, range of online experience, and ways this year's group
uses the Net. The survey is also brief--only 10 questions--and should
take you about five minutes to complete. Please note that all of the
questions are required, and also please note that you should take the
survey only once.

You can access the survey here: http://tinyurl.com/77cdds

3. Add a photo of yourself here at our Yahoo Group. To do so, look at
the left sidebar menu again, and click on Photos. You'll see a folder
labeled 2009 Participants. Just click on it, click on Add Photo, and
then upload a photo from your computer. You should also add your name
and a brief description of the photo.

4. Write a short message introducing yourself to the group. Be sure
you include the following in the message:

-- your name and what you prefer to be called (for example, a nickname);

-- your location (city, country, plus state, province etc. if you like);

-- your gender (most names make this clear, but some don't);

-- your time zone, expressed using GMT;

-- your IDs for Yahoo, Windows Live/MSN, Skype, and other modes of
communication.

I'll post a sample introduction containing all the above for me.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

While you do the above, the moderating team will continue to work
behind the scenes on other course information.

I'll post more things you can do on Wednesday or Thursday (January 7th
or 8th).

Again, welcome! I hope you enjoy the ride!

Sincerely,

Dennis in Phoenix

Hi, everyone.

I'm Dennis Oliver. I was an ESL and Developmental English teacher for
many years; most of my work was with teenagers, young adults, and
adults in both private and public institutions. I also worked as an
ESL/EFL textbook editor and writer and, briefly, as an administrator.

I'm far from being a digital native, but I've worked with computers
for almost 25 years, and I began creating Web-based materials in 1995.
Some of those materials are still online.

I'm originally from the U.S. state of Illinois, but I haven't lived
there for many, many years. Instead, I lived and worked in Oklahoma,
Texas, California, and Oregon before moving to Phoenix a little more
than 18 years ago. I haven't lived or taught outside the U.S., but
I've traveled to some very interesting places--among them, China.

I'm in this seminar to learn, and I fully expect to "stretch my brain"!

Here are more particulars about me:

names: Dennis / Dennis in Phoenix
location: Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.
gender: M
time zone: GMT -7 (year-round)
IDs: Yahoo doliver_phoenix; Skype dennis-oliver

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

That's enough for now, I think.

I look forward to reading--and reponding to--an introduction from each
of you. Just do the following:

1. Hit Start Topic.
2. Type Introduction: your name.
3. Write enough to let each of us know a bit about you!

Best wishes--

Dennis in Phoenix

I.m sure you enjoyed reading the introduction sent by my friend and

Hi, My name is Lynn Treangen and I'm the ESL Consultant for the non-
credit ESL program at a community college in Iowa, USA. I also teach
a credit listening and conversation class. I was born and raised in
the midwest USA but have traveled in Europe and Asia. The new
communication tools online are tools I want to learn about and be
able to use in my practice. This makes me a perpetual student as the
Web continues to invent and change; I don't want to be left in the
dust. This promises to be an interesting discussion and opportunity

I think Dennis wanted each of us to write more stuff about ourselves,

I taught ESL for many years, and now I direct the Robert Henderson

COMMENTS:

I'm glad to see you in Multiliteracies 2009 as well as BaW09. Given
your interest in computers and ICT, I think you'll enjoy both of these
seminars, and I also feel confident that you'll contribute a great
deal to all who are enrolled in Multilit 2009.

There will be a treasure trove of tools, resources, and applications
presented in Multilit and BaW, and there will be some overlap, but in
the main, the two seminars will have different emphases. One
difference will be that Multilit will be more "cerebral": there will
be a greater concentration on reviewing current thinking on
multiliteracies, social networking, and collaborative learning.

With regard to collaborative learning and networking, you should gain
a great deal from the new connections you will forge with other
participants in this seminar. If you look, for example, at the
introductions by Claire Bradin-Siskin and Michael Shade, you'll note
that they're both experienced professionals with very different
backgrounds--and as such, excellent sources for sharing.

As I stated in BaW09, don't allow yourself to feel overwhelmed. The
aim here is the same as in BaW: to conduct a review, NOT to require
mastery. If you can constantly move forward (even when what you'd
really like to do is to understand something thoroughly), you'll do
fine, however--and you'll also have fun in embarking on two different
journeys of discovery which have the same general focus but lead to
different kinds of connections.

That being said, I hope you enjoy the ride when it begins in earnest
on the 12th!

All the best--

Dennis in Phoenix

Yes, there are some folks who've been in previous EVO sessions, but
there may not be as many "old hands" as there seem to be: unlike some
of the EVO sessions, this Yahoo Group is the original one that was
created a number of years ago, so many of the names in the Members
list are actually not from the 2009 session. Ditto for the faces:
there are two folders of photos--one for 2009 participants, the other
for some of the participants from previous years. There are only 6
photos so far for this year, and of those 6, 3 are (I think) new to EVO.

Thanks for the personal details and IDs.

I admire the work you've done, Pete, and I'm particularly impressed
that you're developing materials for SL. I'm not really into SL
myself: I never seem to have enough time to get past the initially
very steep learning curve there, and have registered and then left SL
several times. Even so, I'll give it yet another try one of these days
because I definitely see its potential.

I think you'll bring a lot to this group, Pete, and I look forward to
the action when things move into "go" mode on Monday the 12th!

Once again, welcome!

All the best from Arizona--

Dennis in Phoenix
