Subject: Gearing up for January EVO sessions

Hi all,

This group is starting to accumulate members in anticipation of the upcoming EVO
sessions in January 2010.

This group has about 115 members on it from several previous renditions of the
Multiliteracies course in its various forms over the years. As it is an ongoing
YGroup, we do not follow EVO policy of not accepting new members until EVO
registration starts in January. Therefore we are accepting new memberships as
they are requested (much easier for everyone I think).

However we will follow the EVO schedule for the course itself. Although we
haven't finished updating the syllabus for 2010 you can see how it's coming at
http://goodbyegutenberg.pbworks.com/. You'll note for example that we have a
new book for the course, Mark Pegrum's From Blogs to Bombs:
http://www.newsouthbooks.com.au/isbn/9781921401343.htm
We're hoping for an affordable eBook version, but if you're planning to join us
for this next round you could try and get a copy of the book.

This is just a quick note to let new members know that we have opened the gates
but we don't anticipate much going on of substance here until January, and to
let the 100+ who are on this list from previous times around know that the list
will again get active in January. You are welcome to stay on board and set your
email preferences according to your anticipated level of participation. If you
do choose to join us, you'll be happy to know the course will be altered a bit
thanks to Mark's input and participation.

If you have any comments on our syllabus for January the moderators would be
happy to have your input, otherwise, see you in January,

Vance

Hello Sana Ali,

I'm just wondering what is your opinion of the sites you are posting on our
list. Foreign Exchange? We have bit of time before our course starts to
sort out our participants, and I'll deal with this when I get more time, but
for now, just wondering if you're an educator and how you see yourself in
relation to this list.

And for others on the list, don't worry, the situation is being monitored
:-)

Hi Habiba,

Welcome to the list and to the course. I just finished my classes today and
have just now had a moment to have a look at Sana Ali's profile. This
person was set to hear from our group only in case of special notices.
Spammers almost always set their group preferences so as not to be inundated
with their own spam, so I removed Sana Ali from our group. It was obvious
that ForEx had nothing to do with multiliteracies.

Anyway if you are receiving this, welcome to the course, but be aware it
hasn't started yet. Registration begins Jan 4 and the course itself starts
a week after that. The moderators Jen and Nina and Dennis and I are still
busy setting things up (many changes from last year, and quantum shifts from
years before that.

So we'll start interacting here in January. Meanwhile we're just weeding
out the spammers.

On behalf of the moderating team (Vance Stevens, Jennifer Verschoor,
Dennis Oliver and myself), I'd like to welcome new participants to the
2010 version of Multiliteracies and also welcome back returning
participants from previous years. I am looking forward to learning along
with you. Our session begins officially on Monday, January 11, at which
time we would like everybody to post a brief self-introduction here on
the Yahoo!Group (YG). Tell us your name, what you do, and where you are
from, and let us know what you hope to get out of the session. We
actually have a textbook (remember books?) for the session, From Blogs
to Bombs by Mark Pegrum. If possible, try to get hold of a copy (you can
order the eBook at
http://www.newsouthbooks.com.au/isbn/9781921401343.htm) before we start.
For those who are unable to procure the book, we will be summarizing the
chapters as we go along.

Mark your calendars for the EVO kickoff this coming Sunday at 12 GMT
(http://tinyurl.com/100110noon for time at your location). You will
find us at Worldbridges, http://webheadsinaction.org/live and our host
will be Jeff Lebow. Voice chat will be via Skype (you will need a
headset with microphone) or you can just listen in. We hope you can make
it.

Until January 11, you can check out our wiki at

Hi Darren,

Welcome to the group, and good question, about something over which we have
no real control.

I'm in touch with the author Mark Pegrum, and he was assured by the
publisher that the eBook version would be available Jan 1, and he passed
that information on to me.

I have no contact at the publisher's and Mark is away but returns tomorrow.
I've left him an email asking what he thinks we should do.

He and the publisher have been quite keen to have this book used in this
course and I'm confident we'll find a solution. Meanwhile, there's lots
more to explore at http://goodbyegutenberg.pbworks.com/.

We moderators are putting last minute touches on the course, and we
officially kick off at noon GMT this Sunday Jan 10 at
http://webheadsinaction.org/live

I'll let you know when I hear more about the book.

Vance

Dear Maryanne,
What a pleasure to find you here! I am delighted to have this opportunity to
share this learning experience with you. (For other participants, Maryanne and
I are both from the state of Maryland, and we used to live quite close to one
another; we have visited each other's homes and I consider her a friend on
several levels [not just the virtual one], so it gives me particular pleasure to
see her here.)
Hugs,
Nina
PS I am still figuring out exactly what 'multiliteracies' means also. I see it
as the ability to communicate and understand communication in formats other than
traditional text, such as various visual formats and the so-called "txtspk",
which people (mostly much younger than I!) use when texting each other on their
cell phones. I am, like so many of you, the kind of English teacher who is
careful to spell things out correctly, dot the i's and cross the t's, and
capitalize and punctuate according to the rules--I don't use text messaging on
my ancient cell phone, and I don't possess a webcam. Still, I am not stupid; I
see the future coming as well as the next person, so it seems wise to accept
what cannot be changed and get on with it.

I really like that example in the first chapter. It carries the argument
all through the book. The txtspk example is approachable through all the 5
lenses. I will be devil's advocate and suggest that the teacher should have
anticipated this sort of thing and set a more imaginative task for his/her
students. I am intrigued by the sociopolitical lens. Did the student do
this on purpose? In which case, did the student get his/her point across??
Considering all the media attn I like to think yes.

I'm with the student. This is the 21st century. Wake up people!

Those who know me know to take me half seriously (that is, could be half
full, half empty, which?). But what do the rest of you say?

Welcome to Multiliteracies, Rita! We are very glad to have you on board.
You seem to be a fast learner, having already gotten started with your
students on a Ning. I look forward to learning from and with you.
Nina (Maryland, USA)

I am a middle school English teacher, and I have only recently been
introduced to the learning and collaboration possibilities offered by ICT
tools. I have already involved my students in a ning network, and I am eager
to learn better strategies to help them maximize the benefit. I am looking
forward to getting to know you so that we can exchange ideas and
experiences.

Best,
Rita Abdelnour

Dear Stacey,

Welcome to Multiliteracies session. Some years ago I attended my first
online EVO session and I can assure you that it was a turning point in my
career. Currently I am constantly learning and sharing new ways of
integrating technology with teachers from different parts of the world.

Looking forward to sharing together.
Warm regards

Hello Everyone,

I'm Darren Elliott, from the UK, teaching in a Japanese University. I've been
using digital technologies for my own professional development for a while now
(twitter, blogging, nings) and I am trying to find technology that fits my
teaching context and learners. I hope this course will help me explore a few
more ideas set me up for the academic year ahead.

Looking forward to working with you all!

My name is Heather Davis and I am from Ontario, Canada but I now live in
Beijing where I teach Grade 3 at Yew Chung International School. This is my
6th year in China and I love it. I previously taught Grade 4 for the first
five years I was here.

I love all things Web 2.0 and am interested in learning everything I can
that will lead me to be a better educator and provide a strong supportive
classroom using IT in many ways.

I am really looking forward to learning many new things.

Hi all,

Earlier when Darren pointed out that the ebook version of From Blogs to
Bombs wasn't available, I got in touch with the author Mark Pegrum who
contacted his publisher, and what we found out was posted on our Getting
Started page here: http://goodbyegutenberg.pbworks.com/GettingStarted2010

The publisher is actually on a looonggg seasonal holiday but Sylvia it turns
out is in the office during the break. Her contact details are at the link
above. She told us the eBook is available, just not listed at the website
(yet), but if you will contact Sylvia Defendi at
sdefendi@... she can arrange to send you the ebook files in
any one of 4 formats in exchange for your credit card details (cost about
$20 Australian).

Now, Mark has graciously agreed, and secured permission from the publisher,
to provide the Introduction chapter "Many Lenses" as a free, standalone PDF
file. Now, I changed the name of the folder it's in to remove the %20 space
in the middle, forgetting that I had ticked to automatically send the link
out to all members when I uploaded it.

So the link you got earlier won't work. This one will:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/multilit/files/EVOMlit2010/pegrum_blogs2bombs_many\
lenses.pdf

So now you can all read the Many Lenses chapter and find out what we were
talking about earlier, txtspk and baas and ^^^^. And you can respond on
that thread with your opinions.

I might mention that we're not actually supposed to be getting started this
early so this is exofficio, and you didn't actually read this message ;-))

Vance

Hi everyone,

I'm glad to see so many introductions here. I'm Vance, moderator of the
course, American living in Abu Dhabi for the last ten years, have lived in
Texas, California, Hawaii, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, as well as UAE. I taught
ESL for 20 years, last ten doubling as CALL Coordinator, then worked for an
ESL software company, then did a consultancy for Amideast that put me back
in the UAE as CALL Coordinator and most recently as lecturer in computing at
Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi. I blog at
http://adVancEducation.blogspot.com (with links to other blog spaces) and I
track my publications and presentations here:
http://vancestevens.com/papers.

But I've also had a parallel career since 1998 as coordinator of Webheads
http://webheads.info. At some point TESOL asked me to teach a course for
them on Multiliteracies. I agreed and then boned up on the topic (in that
order), and I've learned a lot about multiliteracies since, but only from
teaching the course over and over again.

Multiliteracies entails a bit of experimentation and here's a first one.
I've created a Google Docs spreadsheet here:
http://tinyurl.com/evomlit2010participants. It's created in such a way that
anyone can simply write on it.

Go there and fill in your details, first name, family name, where from,
where now, best single link where we can learn more about you (ePortfolio),
Skype ID etc, and for Greeting URL, get the URL of the message you posted to
this YGroup to introduce yourself. For example, Bindu's msg is at this URL:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/multilit/message/667

All info here is optional. Don't worry if you don't have or don't wish to
divulge (this is public info)

But in this way we'll have a central place where we can see who's here and
learn something about them without having to mess with tables in a wiki.

Try it and see if you like it :-)

Vance
