To fill the gap I will give a fairly informal talk about the work we
are doing at the junction of mobile, social networking, and ad
supported sites and in the process show off our new toy ...
http://mixibodz.com
Look forward to seeing folks on the 14th!,
Geoff.
One of the speakers for the 14th has had to postpone. Rather than
cancel again I am hoping to find a suitable replacement.
Does anybody have a talk that they can contribute or simply a topic
they have a burning desire to see discussed in the techtalk forum.
Doesn't need to be a formal polished talk by any means!
If you are keen then please let me know asap!,
Geoff.
This event has now been rescheduled for Wednesday 14th November - all
details remain the same. Look forward to seeing folks there. Please do
pass this on to anybody else who might be interested. Kind regards,
Geoff.

Unfortunately the sale of I-Play to Oberon at the end of last week has
disrupted Phil's schedule somewhat ;->! TechTalk 8 will thus be
postponed until later in the summer once the dust has settled - date
TBC. Kind regards,
Geoff.

Dear all,
We have a particularly strong pair of talks for the next event ...
* Mobile video by Phil Cooke, CTO at I-Play.
"Mobile video is hot news at present. Getting video content from
origination to handset deployment raises new challenges for mobile
content providers. Phil has been leading I-play's initial forays into
this area and will highlight some of the technical and logistical
hurdles that need to be cleared."
* Location based services, Gordon Povey, MD, Trisent.
"Trisent have a unique technology to deliver Location Based Services.
Fresh from delivering a national LBS service in Bulgaria, Gordon
considers if sticking a dot on a map is a compelling enough service
and introduces some of the LBS research work recently undertaken at
Trisent."
We are back at the Canon's Gait ...
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=EH8+8DQ&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1
... again for this event which as usual will start at 7pm and food
will be provided.
I look forward to seeing you there. Please do pass on this notice to
anybody you can think of who might be interested.
Geoff.
Look forward to seeing folks tonight! Kind regards,
Geoff.

Dear all,
The next event will be on Wednesday 21st of March at 7pm in the
Canon's Gait in Edinburgh. Talks will be ...
* Mobile Access to Data - Don't forget voice!
"Love them or hate them, but don't disregard Interactive Voice
Response (or IVR) systems as only applicable to the big boys. We all
know how easy it is to find out the size of our overdraft with a few
key strokes via telephone banking, but did you know you can provide
this type of technology very economically for the smallest of projects."
Steve Brown of Justfone explains how you can implement this type of
system with a number of technologies, using traditional telephony and
Voice over IP.
* Mobile technologies for connecting physical
objects to digital data
"There are a number of technologies that enable mobile phones to
access digital content that has been linked to physical objects.
Approaches include tagging objects with passive markers such as 2D
barcodes or active markers such as RFID tags. We provide another
solution that identifies an object from an image taken on a camera
phone and returns relevant data to the handset."
Anthony Ashbrook of Mobile Acuity will provide a brief overview and
comparison of the main approaches and provide some live examples.
Looking forward to seeing folks there!,
Geoff.

there! Kind regards,
Geoff.

Unfortunately Steve has had to pull out due to other commitments, but
Adrian Williamson from Graham Technology has stepped in to the breach
and will give a talk detailing his experiences implementing XP (the
agile methodology rather than the operating system!) ...
"eXtreme Programming is being widely adopted, and much discussed.
Adrian Williamson will talk about adopting XP across his 50 people,
partly off-shored, development team. The talk will cover the
introduction process rather than XP itself, although the two are never
far apart!"
This promises to be a very interesting insight into the actual use of
something which many folks just talk about.
I hope to be able to reschedule Steve's talk at a future event - watch
this space! Kind regards,
Geoff.

I had hoped to fit in another TechTalk before the end of the year but
the best laid plans etc!
The next event will be on Wednesday 17th January in the basement of
the Canon's Gait - which I understand has been refurbished since we
last used it in October!
There will be two talks this time ...
* Mobile Access to Data - Don't forget voice!
Love them or hate them, but don't disregard Interactive Voice
Response (or IVR) systems as only applicable to the big boys. We all
know how easy it is to find out the size of our overdraft with a few
key strokes via telephone banking, but did you know you can provide
this type of technology very economically for the smallest of projects.
Steve Brown of Justfone explains how you can implement this type of
system with a number of technologies, using traditional telephony and
Voice over IP.
* Mobile Advertising
Advertising is coming to your handset, like it or not. Better get
ready for ad-enabled content of all kinds. The presentation covers all
the activities and companies in the space, including but far from
exclusively Rapid Mobile's Ad360. Includes analyst figures, reports
from four recent conferences and live demos!
Presented by Richard Marshall of Rapid Mobile.
Look forward to seeing you all then. Kind regards,
Geoff.

I will describe our experiences using Bango for WAP billing for the
last six months.
* "PayForIt", Paul Griffiths, MD, Dialogue Communications.

messaging and payments aggregator used by several techtalk regulars,
and are in the process of rolling out PayForIt (aka X-pay son of
SimPay) services in the UK.
* "PayPal Mobile", Ronnie Forbes, Mobiqa.
Ronnie will talk about the "Txt2Buy" mobile payment solution from
PayPal Mobile, when it is appropriate to use it, how it's different
from other solutions like Payforit, and why finally this could be a
viable mobile payment solution for macro payments.

Having been using Bango for WAP billing for the last six months, and
now looking at PayForIt (aka xPay son of SimPay) as it rolls out in
the UK, I will compare and contrast our experiences with them.
* "PayPal Mobile", Ronnie Forbes, Mobiqa.

After a couple of successful events in Edinburgh, we are pleased to
announce the first MX TechTalk in Glasgow.
This meeting will take place in the Old Print Works, 36 North Frederick
Street, Glasgow starting at 7pm on Wednesday 22nd March.
* Adrian Williamson from Graham Technology will be talking about "GT-X7
Mobile Sales Force Automation on GPRS with PDAs" - 150 agents walking
the streets of Eire (well Dublin really) trying to sell telco
services door to door.
* Michael Wilson, Senior Symbian Applications Developer at Sysnet, will
be talking about "Software development for Symbian based devices".
This talk will first discuss technical reasons for using Symbian and
what advantages it offers over mobile Java. This should help a developer
decide whether they should use Symbian or Java to develop their application.
The presentation will then briefly look at the different versions of
Symbian available: Nokia Series 60 (version 1, 2 and 3), Nokia Series 80
and UIQ.
The talk will then conclude with describing the tools required to
develop a Symbian application for a specific version of Symbian.
Pit-falls and pointers for Symbian development will be included in this
part. Hopefully by the end of the presentation, someone will have enough
to start developing their own Symbian application.
There will be access to a bar and sandwiches will be provided for those
who haven't managed to grab a bite after work.
We look forward to seeing as many people as possible there so please
pass this information on to anybody who might be interested within your
organisation and also your other industry contacts.

Unfortunately Mobiqa have had to be postpone until the March event due
to a clash with a customer commitment.
I am very pleased to say that Nick Goodall from IPlay has stepped into
the breach at short notice and will give a talk entitled "Real World
Network Programming in MIDP".
Nick has a huge amount of experience in this area and I am thoroughly
looking forward to his talk. Hope to see you all there. Kind regards,
Geoff.
Unfortunately due to venue availability we can't run this on 26th
January as planned, and so we have rescheduled for Tuesday 24th January
instead.
Location and time are same as last time, i.e. 7pm at Canon's Gait, High
Street, Edinburgh. Setup will be the same as last time.
Once again we have two talks lined up ...
* I will be talking about integration of mobile services with the 3 network.
* A representative from Mobiqa will be talking on a subject which may or
may not be MMS content delivery - details TBC.
Looking forward to seeing you all there. Kind regards,
Geoff.

Thought it was looking rather folorn and empty here so, as an initial
post, here are the details for the first meeting. Cheers,
Geoff.
MX TechTalk is a new series of evening events, kindly sponsored by the
MX Alliance (http://www.mxalliance.co.uk/), for anybody interested in
the development of mobile and wireless applications in Scotland.
The TechTalk events will be very informal, and will consist of short
interactive talks from folks involved in the industry, covering a
broad range of topics such as development case studies, interesting
new technologies to watch, new OSS tools, development environments and
so on.
The key feature of MX TechTalk events will be accessibility for the
individual:
* Free to attend - no need to be an MX member.
* Will be held in the evening so no need to arrange time off work to
attend.
* Will alternate between Edinburgh and Glasgow initially, with the
intention of holding events in other locations in due course. Approx
six events per year.
* Informal atmosphere - discussion encouraged and expected.
The first meeting will take place in the Canon's Gait, High Street,
Edinburgh, starting at 7pm on Wednesday 7th December.
* Geoff Ballinger, CTO at Mixipix Ltd., and Jim Black from MX
Alliance, will briefly introduce TechTalk and the MX Alliance.
* Michael Ewins, Platform and Services Development Manager at iPlay,
will present a talk on "Lessons learned in SMS application development".
* Geoff Ballinger, CTO at Mixipix Ltd., will present a short talk on
"2.5/3G data networks - things a service developer might like to know".
There will be access to a bar and sandwiches will be provided for
those who haven't managed to grab a bite after work.
We look forward to seeing as many people as possible there. Please
pass this information on to anybody who might be interested within
your organisation.
A yahoo group has been created to support the series. See
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mxtechtalk/join, or send an email to
mxtechtalk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com, to subscribe.
