Has anyone else noticed that if you are looking at the MBL Community
Directory and attempt to list the blogs that start with a number, it
doesn't work?

http://www.mybloglog.com/buzz/community/#/

I presume this has to do with the fact they chose to use the number
symbol as opposed to using an actual number like 1.

In HTML the # symbol is used to represent an anchor link within a page,
so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the problem here.

After adding the MBL recent visitor code to my site I ran into a
validation error and wanted to pass along the fix.

Basically, for every instance of the AND symbol (&) you need to replace
it with (&).

This is called "escaping" and you just have to do it if you want your
HTML to be valid. It's something the MBL team needs to work on because
right now their code is breaking every web site you put it on.

See http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/html40/entities/ for more info if
you are curious.

Hi John,

I think this group is a great idea, it will be useful to have a
central point were we can discuss problems and ideas, or share tips.

Thanks for letting me in :-)

I hadn't noticed that, but I just tried and you are right, it doesn't
work. I think your answer is correct, and the use of the symbol is the
problem.

Thanks for joining in Kate. I think that as time passes we'll see more
people joining the discussion group as they realize they have something
they'd like to discuss or point out, but don't know where to do it.

Of course, they have to hear about this group first, and I'm afraid I
haven't done a very good job of letting people know. I posted about it
on my blog, but not really sure what else to do.

Yes, it can be hard to get members for a new group. I'll mention it in my next post, quite a few of my readers use MBL, so it might encourage some to join in.

Hmm. Now this is an interesting problem, and one MBL needs to solve -
quickly.

It's actually possible to claim anyone's blog, apparently, as was noted
by one of Google's top engineers who's blog was claimed by someone else:
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/another-mybloglog-exploit/

All they need to do to solve this problem is generate a unique ID
during signup and have web authors put an HTML document in the root of
the URL with that ID in the name to verify it's theirs. That would
solve the whole problem...

I read all of these different issues that pop up on various blogs but
for some reason we still can't get the message out that this group
exists so that people can actually diseminate this information among
the community quickly, and be able to communicate issues back to MBL
with more momentum.

For example:
mybloglog-last-night/
  - http://blog.auinteractive.com/big-problems-facing-mybloglog

The problem is that with everyone simply blogging about these issues on
personal blogs all over the place there isn't a critical mass of users
being made aware.

Which is the exact problem we're attempting to solve with this User
Group...

I'm not sure if it is a temporary thing, or if MBL has permanently
disabled them, but I've been using the MyAvatars plugin
(http://www.napolux.com/projects/myavatars/) on my blog to put people's
faces by their names and this evening they stopped working.

I also notice that they aren't working on FuzzyFuture.com

You know, I actually keep up with the MBL Blog. I guess not many other
people do because there are never many comments there, especially not
given the size of the community.

On the other hand, it might be because the MBL Blog has one of the
worst comment forms I've ever seen on any blog, anywhere.

   - First, the comment box is unbelievably small. How are we supposed
to actually type comments in this tiny box that is about 250 pixels
wide?
   - Second, if you try to actually provide a hyperlink in a comment the
system strips the HTML right out without so much as a warning. Why?!?
Every single comment is moderated anyway.
   - Speaking of which, why is every comment moderated? We have to go
through a horrible capcha mechanism so you know it's a real human and
not a robot.
   - If you're going to make me fill in a capcha, why do you have to
present it on a second screen, AFTER I think I've already submitted my
comment? Why can't you just put the damn capcha right on the same
screen and make it a one shot affair? I've nearly left without
submitting accidentally twice because of this.
   - And why do I have to enter all my data manually, and then go
through a capcha anyway when the system recognizes me as being logged
in for all other MBL purposes?

In short, the accessiblity of the MBL comment mechanism is so terrible
that I can only think it must actually be by design. Someone must want
t you to really, really want to give feedback because no one else is
goign to jump through all of these hoops.

Oh, and then even if you do all of that, you still don't know if your
comment will even be approved.

Oh well,

John

Still working on it. Upcoming.org just changed over, and we're hoping
our migration goes as smoothly.

Right now, almost all of the MBL stuff is on Y! servers, but there are
still a few things that are not yet Y! I'm really looking forward to
Y! logins as I think it will really simplify things.

Zubli,

Welcome!

I'd just like to point out that the group is intended not only for
people to share information about MyBlogLog, but also to ask questions,
seek assistance and point out issues or concerns.

So if there is something you need help with, please feel free to ask.

Just to point out - the link to do this is on your main profile page
by your avatar, not on the "edit profile" page where I just spent ages

I really like how MBL's profile is starting to act like a hub for all
the other networking things I'm signed up to.

Eric and his professional team never stop to add more values to the
excitement of my building of my own e-Communities within the large
MyBlogLog e-Community.

The latest, in the lingo of MyBlogLog...

     Crazy Delicious!

So, I wake up this morning and I am offered to add Twitter. What a
special delight. More please...more...

What is Twitter?

Have you applied to your homepage, this service to your advantage,
especially your presence here at MyBlogLog?

Twitter is:

A global community of friends and strangers answering one simple
question: What are you doing? Answer on your phone, IM, or right here
on the web!

I always want to twit my friends and family of bloggers, especially at
MyBlogLog.

Yes, answering their...

* Where are you now?

* Where have you been?

* What naughtiness you are doing now?

* What's up?

* What's down?

* Why are you not responding to my message?

* I love you...

Oh! You get the point the message I am sending you now...

So, apart from you knowing Zubli Zainordin is OnLine, or the last
point in the continuum, I rest, off...doing my personals, and not
being presence at MyBlogLog, then you shall be twitted or informed by
me, my whereabouts.

See?

Saw!

Good, now click to twitter, should you prefer, and be twitted too, I
also want to know where you are. Of course, except for your privacy
and you doing yours privately, just keep that to your self. But, you
can "put" what you prefer to be "putted" at that spot, and give me a
wink! I shall be "puttified". Okay?

Loud and Clear...I hope.

Eric,

What _I think_ is that this message is SPAM. In fact I would have
deleted it but since it's the first instance in this group I'm going
to go on record with a few comments instead.

As I stated on the home page of the group, the MBL User Group is
intended to allow us to "discuss items relevant to the user base as a
whole". While there are instances where we may sometimes
individually need assistance with something MBL related, that would
still be appropriate because if one person needs it then others
likely will also.

A site review request is however in no way relevant to the MBL
community, especially for a site that doesn't even have the code on
it.

If you are truly looking for constructive criticism on the site there
are other places where that is appropriate. For example, we have a
forum specifically for this purpose at HTMLHelp.com
(http://forums.htmlhelp.com/index.php?
s=d312e98dd5c2f316de7bd7411d7ebdb3&showforum=20)

In the future, for everyone's sake, posts like this will be deleted
and the member will be subject to being banned.

Thanks,

John

Robyn,

I wonder if it would be possible for you to talk to someone at Yahoo
and see if it is somehow possible to allow group members to have a link
to our MBL user ID beside our name when we post a message?

I guess we'd need a MBL field added to the profile page so it could
pull it into the group...

I for one would like to be able to check people out when I'm reading
their message, but currently we really don't have any simple way of
doing that, at least that I'm aware of.

Hi, John,
Here's a good example of a demonstration of Twitter's growing power: http://tinyurl.com/3c6uva

Here's what Jeremiah Owyang opens with:
" LinkedIn's Community Evangelist steps in, prevents PR Implosion (and keeps Rubel Relevant)

I was watching the chatter in real time today as Mario Sundar, LinkedIn's Community Evangelist and friend of mine respond instantly to Steve Rubel, PR A-lister in Twitter. Should his complaints have gone unanswered, this would have spiraled into a LinkedIn complaint fest. Steve's blog post documents the near catastrophe.

Fortunately, Mario saw the opportunity (he's linked into the conversation on blogs, twitter, and god knows what else) and responded quickly to Steve's deleted profile."

Thanks for the example Vincent. I can see how that was useful, though
it seems a bit unusual. I guess I'm more wondering what the point is
from an everyday usage perspective.

I wonder, is anyone using Twitter as a plugin on your Blog? If so, do

Web Worker Daily had a piece about this:
http://webworkerdaily.com/2007/03/15/eight-ways-twitter-is-useful-
professionally/

TBH, as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't have a use YET, but it might
eventually. Saying "I'm out walking the dogs" might get through to
those people who don't actually believe my Skype status being
on "away" :-D

Hi everyone,

I think Twitter is more of a distraction, real time updates as to what
you are doing and so on. Personally I don't see much use for it,
although there are those who will disagree as they are sat at their pc
all day and half the night too lol.
I want to go online and post a new article or research further, look at
other blogs through the MBL community, not twitter on about what I'm
doing all the time.
