Successful Neodynium 'Cooking' Test - Reduced Strength by 2/3   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #881 of 2114 |
All,

Good news. I just successfully weakened one of my super-powerful 3" round x 1/4"
thick neodynium disc magnets (had to pry apart with a screwdriver!),to about the
strength of a ceramic speaker magnet.

The Curie point for neos is 300 Celsius (572F), so I pre-heated my oven to 450F
(I did'nt want to kill it completely), and 'baked' one for 20 minutes on an
upside-down glass lasagna dish. I took it out and let it air cool for another
15min until I could just touch it, then water-cooled it (OK to do if it's only
200 degrees or so.)

Not bad results for a first attempt. Now it's just a matter of adjusting the
temp/time to 'creep up' to the desired strength. Neos are much more common in
bar sizes, I have found.
