If you want real real dark skies go the the north of Scotland. The main problems are no summer darkness at all and often in the winter, observing deep space is changed to the auroras, which can be spectacular at times. When I lived up there the Zodiacal light was easily visible at the equinoxes and once or twice a year I would see the Zodiacal band and the Gegenschein. That's dark!
Now its the lights of Necastle!.
Cheers all

I have previously only had the displeasure of watching launch cancellations, so it was nice to see one take off for once. I was particularly taken with the live views of the earth as the orbiter climbed above the atmosphere, and I liked the Public Affairs Officer referring to it as their Monday commute into orbit.
Earlier this year, I had the great pleasure of listening to Jon McBride describe the experience in detail at KSC after my astronaut training day. Now that would be a great day out for Nastro.
Thanks, I made it in time. However, note that this was a hoax launch, because it wasn't p***ing down. And my screensaver kicked in at a critical moment.

Were we planning to do anything other than just watching the meteor (or rain) shower, or we were planning food as well? If food as well, are we planning to meet regardless and provide our own entertainment if the weather sucks?
Are you sure that is spelt Taurids, and not Tardis :-)
Only one hour twenty one minutes to go for my next fix.
More to the point, I was at Kielder last night and although I never saw any, Gary claimed to see a few. Always over my shoulder, of course, and looking towards Orion/Taurus.

The key to seeing the Taurids, Paul, is not to have your back to
Taurus!

Are you sure that is spelt Taurids, and not Tardis :-)
Only one hour twenty one minutes to go for my next fix.
More to the point, I was at Kielder last night and although I never saw
any, Gary claimed to see a few. Always over my shoulder, of course, and
looking towards Orion/Taurus.

They would be Taurids! The Taurids always seem to produce a
surprising number of meteors despite being classed as a minor shower.

This is a reminder that the Leonids meteor shower is on Tuesday night
(Novembe 17). The indications are that the peak could be as high as 500
meteors an hour
(http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2008/04dec_leonids2009.htm),
although at the peak the radiant will be below the horizon for the UK.
If you are interested, we are meeting at Hauxley at about 20:00 for a
viewing session.

Cynical? Or biased? Or hopeful? We know you see everything in the shade of the Tardis, Paul.
The news last night said the imacts resulted in around 25 gallons of water being discovered.
National Geographic last night had a show about the Constellation project and the various things they are planning and with which they are experimenting. I imagine much of it will turn out to be moonpie in the sky, but some of it might come to fruition.

Do you think this NASA announcement of water on the moon has been timed
to coincide with the new Dr Who adventure this weekend 'The Waters of Mars'?
Or am I being too cynical...

The frames I stacked and calibrated were in clear sky but I discarded as many which were suspected to have cloud creeping into the frame. I imaged in the back garden which is not bad for LP East and South but my guiding camera Meade DSI went hay wire so I was unable to guide since then I left the DSI on the radiator and it is now working ( must have caught a cold ) but all the other bits worked well.
cheers

Hi Bob
The 'tracking' is good, stars look OK. Imaging through clouds is pretty well hope for the best though, lots of light scatter, worst in the blue. Not a bad effort though. Was the set-up at home or afield?

Hi all
Had a try at imaging M45 on Tuesday night with my new portable set up, getting enough clear nights to iron out all the problems is frustrating if you have time check it out on my flickr site www.flickr.com/ photos/bmgscott
