TITLE: Environmental Specialist 3 (Conservation Biologist/Information Specialist)

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Natural Heritage, Natural Heritage Inventory Program anticipates hiring a working level full-time Environmental Specialist 3 to support rare species data management and review project permit applications for impacts to rare species and exemplary natural communities.
The successful candidate will function as the Conservation Biologist/Information Specialist and report to and be supervised by the program manager. The successful candidate will assist the program in conservation database management, environmental review, data entry, information requests, and field assessment for rare species and significant ecological sites. The position will be stationed in Nashville, Tennessee.

REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, zoology, botany or other acceptable field and two years of fulltime professional environmental program work. Qualifying fulltime environmental program experience may substitute for the required education, on a year for year basis, to a maximum of four years. Graduate coursework in environmental science, biology, zoology, plant ecology, botany or other acceptable field may be substituted for the required experience, on a year for year basis, to a maximum of one year (24 semester hours is equivalent to one year), or two years fulltime professional environmental program work with the State of Tennessee.
The position requires
o Working knowledge of ecological concepts of Tennessee’s fauna, flora, and/or natural communities.
o Familiarity with conservation issues in Tennessee or the region.
o Good verbal and written communication skills.
o Familiarity with ArcView GIS software, and/or database management.
o Ability to troubleshoot GIS or database problems.
o Excellent attention to detail.
o Ability to conduct field work and site assessments sometimes in difficult terrain.
o Experience conducting environmental reviews.
o Experience with Oracle and SQL desired.
o Working knowledge of ecological concepts of Tennessee’s fauna, flora, and/or natural communities.
