Penn State University and National Park Service
Vital Signs Monitoring Program
MS and/or PhD in Forest ecology, Forest Science, Ecological Monitoring or
related area
One-year Appointment
University Park, PA

Penn State's School of Forest Resources is seeking a Project
Assistant/Associate to assist The National Park Service (NPS) in
implementing a new strategy to conduct a service-wide ecological monitoring
program (i.e., the Vital Signs Monitoring Program). The purpose of this
project is to develop broadly based, scientifically sound information on
the current status and long-term trends in the composition, structure and
function of park ecosystems (http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/index.cfm).
The implementation of this program is based on "networks" or groups of
parks. The Eastern Rivers and Mountains Network (ERMN) has an office on
The Pennsylvania State University's (PSU) main campus and includes nine
parks located in four states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West
Virginia. The ERMN parks range in size from approximately 66 to 30,000
hectares and generally consist of a mosaic of forested hillsides and flood
plains, streams and large rivers, talus slopes and cliffs, vernal pools and
wetlands, open fields and agriculture. For more information on the ERMN
and the parks therein, please visit:
http://www1.nature.nps.gov/im/units/ermn/index.htm. This position will
work for the PSU project team as an NPS ERMN cooperator to research,
design, write and implement a fully developed protocol for this forest
vegetation monitoring program following explicit NPS monitoring protocol
guidelines. Primary tasks will include: 1) help generate appropriate
sampling design and field data collection protocols to meet stated program
objectives; 2) coordinate and lead a field data collection effort to
evaluate the proposed protocol and collect pilot data during summer 2007;
3) use pilot data to statistically evaluate if the proposed sampling
design, methods, and sample sizes are sufficient to meet stated objectives
and modify sampling design and protocols accordingly; and 4) make written
revisions to the full protocol and all standard operating procedures. MS
and/or PhD in Forest ecology, Forest Science, Ecological Monitoring or
related area; experience designing, collecting, and analyzing vegetation
monitoring programs/data; experience using appropriate and typical
vegetation inventory/monitoring equipment and technologies; experience
leading and supervising field crews in oftentimes rugged and remote
settings; ability to identify mid-Atlantic plant species; proven ability to
write clearly, concisely, and precisely; ability to work on several aspects
of the project simultaneously in cooperation with a diverse group of
people. THIS IS A FIXED-TERM APPOINTMENT FUNDED FOR ONE YEAR FROM DATE OF
HIRE WITH EXCELLENT POSSIBILITY OF RE-FUNDING.

To apply send cover letter and resume by October 31, 2006 to Crystal
Switalski, 306A Agricultural Administration Building, University Park, PA
16802-2601.
