Hello,

I am a web designer for a financial reporting company. Recently we
started receiving NewsML formatted feeds from our media provider. I
have looked into NewsML and am very impressed with its rich feature
set. However, I am at a loss as how to translate the xml based
structure into xhtml. I have a few questions if any of you can provide
me with some insight:

1. How does one translate a NewsML feed (into XHTML)?
2. Are any of you using XSLT technology in order to translate the feeds?
3. What are some good resources for NewsML developers?

I am trying to find an entry point to produce a given feed into a file
suited for a web browser. If you have any information that can help me
please respond.

Thank you,

Jason Lappa

Hi Jason,

To answer to your questions:

1 & 2. Yes, in order to display news items (or collections of news items) on web
pages, we are usually using XSLT from NewsML1 to XHTML (or HTML).
We even provide to AFP customers (on demand) a simple XSLT toolkit to do so. We
also alternatively provide a simple Java app that stores the content of news
items in a RDBMS (therefore HTML can be generated via ASP/JSP/PHP pages). But
most NewsML users develop their own receiver application.
Be careful that real life NewsML implementation vary from providers to
providers.

3. The best guideline is without contest the NewsML guidelines at:
www.newsml.org/IPTC/NewsML/1.2/documentation/NewsML_1.2-doc-Guidelines_1.00.pdf
but you could also read my old NewsML for dummies still at:
http://xml.coverpages.org/NewsMLForDummies.pdf

Re applications, Reuters has created a long time ago a Java toolkit on
SourceForge for their NewsML flavor.

Well, This was fault in my understanding...

What I need is DTD/XML_Schema_Defination(XSD)for NewsML-G2 2.0.

Ah! Sorry. I don't think there's anything out there that converts
from PDF to NewsML XML *specifically* but I could be wrong.

Check the IPTC website (www.iptc.org). DTDs and XML Schema files are available
there for both NewsML 1 and NewsML-G2, and a lot of great resources for working
with these standards.

There is also a NewsML-G2 yahoo news group

Subject: How to Convey Video Aspect Ratio in NewsML 1.2?

Hello,

How do I convey characteristics of videos within NewsML 1.2?

For example, let's say I want to convey the aspect ratio (e.g. "16:9"). Do I
make this a Property element within the Characteristics?

So, something like

<Characteristics>
   <Property FormalName="AspectRatio" Value="16:9">
</Characteristics>

Does anyone else do this (or something similar)?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Stuart

We (BW) do pretty much as you outlined, and use Characteristics/Property for
describing multimedia outside of the few elements available to describe media
(e.g. SizeInBytes, MimeType, Format etc.) We do not, however, identify the
aspect ratio (should we?).

For an example roll over the thumbnail on this page

the NewsML elements and our own Property elements. Here is the NewsComponent for

Hi Jayson and Stuart,
As you know, NewsML is pretty expendable format.  Therefore "best practice" web page is really useful for every NewsML user.

Hi Takahiro,

I believe you mean that NewsML is a pretty *expandable* format - open to expansion in various ways.  (See http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/expand)

An expendable format would be one that can be discarded after a single use or perhaps one that isn't worth saving (See http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/expendable).

I have a client that is planning to receive newsml files and they want to be
able to import the files into InDesign to put the stories in a newspaper-type
layout for print.

However, none of us are familiar with how one would transform the newsml into
InDesign for publishing. I was hoping maybe someone inthis group may have
insight into this.

Any suggestions?

Transforming newsML to indesign.

You need to be aware of the version of InDesign used. The early versions had some things you needed to handle in special ways.

We’re doing this in two ways.

a)      Pure search and replace of the XML-structure to text with InDesign style inserted.

b)      Use XSLT and a stylesheet to transform the XML to  the InDesign format.

InDesign also support a direct mapping between XML-elements and styles.

I would also check if the customer/client has an editorial system that handles the connection with InDesign so what you really need is to import the NewsML data in the editorial system.

Using a or b above will give you a textfile that you can import in InDesign. You need to check some box in the import procedure to make indesign look for styles. The styles must either be declared in the indesign or be defined in a header in the imported file.

For a more advanced operation you should look into InDesign server where you can programmatically build whole pages. But I’m not familiar with that.

Starting with XML like this

<SPORTRES><SPVAR>VENTSPILS, Lettland</SPVAR><SPVAD>Euro challenge</SPVAD><RESEPA><EPAVAD>grupp K</EPAVAD><HLAG>Ventspils</HLAG><BLAG>Norrköping</BLAG><HRES>104</HRES><BRES>69</BRES><EPAPER>(31&tstr;19, 31&tstr;17, 18&tstr;16, 24&tstr;17)</EPAPER><EPAFAKTA><P><LAGNAMN>Norrköping:</LAGNAMN> Dee Ayuba 17, Andrew Mitchell 13, Joakim Kjellbom 10, Mikael Lindquist 8, Gee Gervin 8, Tomas Gaidamavicius 3, Povilas Sakinis 3, Anton Saks 2, Conor Grace 2, Randall Hanke 2, Fred Drains.</P></EPAFAKTA></RESEPA></SPORTRES>

And applying some search and replace our customer will receive a textfile like this:

<ASCII-WIN>

<ParaStyle:TTRESURUBRIK>Basket

<ParaStyle:TTSPRESORT>VENTSPILS, Lettland

<ParaStyle:TTSPRESVAD>Euro challenge, grupp K

<ParaStyle:TTEPAMATCH>Ventspils<0x2013>Norrköping 104<0x2013>69 (31<0x2013>19, 31<0x2013>17, 18<0x2013>16, 24<0x2013>17)

<ParaStyle:TTEPAFAKTA>Norrköping: Dee Ayuba 17, Andrew Mitchell 13, Joakim Kjellbom 10, Mikael Lindquist 8, Gee Gervin 8, Tomas Gaidamavicius 3, Povilas Sakinis 3, Anton Saks 2, Conor Grace 2, Randall Hanke 2, Fred Drains.

<ParaStyle:TTRESURUBRIK>Fotboll

<ParaStyle:TTSPRESSAK>Europa league, första omgången, andra matchen

<ParaStyle:TTEPAMATCH>CSKA<0x00A0>Moskva<0x2013>PAOK<0x00A0>Thessaloniki 1<0x2013>1 (0<0x2013>0)

<ParaStyle:TTEPAFAKTA>0<0x2013>1 Zlatan Muslimovic (67), 1<0x2013>1 Sergej Ignasjevitj (80).

Publik: 10<0x00A0>000.

CSKA<0x00A0>Moskva vidare med sammanlagt 2<0x2013>1.

Interesting. My client uses InDesign CS4 and I use CS5. However, neither of us
have not used any of the xml capabilities. That is why we are both so lost on
how to do this.

Currently, we just import text or Word files into the templates and apply preset
styles that are saved within each template.

Are styles typically defined in a header in newsml files?

The newsml files don’t know where they’re going.

Here’s a link on how to map xml to indesign:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WSB3CF54D6-9843-4486-96CF-A224B6566401a.html

A provider of newsml normally supply many receivers with the same xml structure and they might have very different looking layout aplied by using different styles.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/vtd-xml/files/vtd-xml/ximpleware_2.10/. This
release includes a number of new features and enhancement.

* The core API of VTD-XML has been expanded. Users can now perform
cut/paste/insert on an empty element.
* This release also adds the support of deeper location cache support for
parsing and indexing. This feature is useful for application performance tuning
for processing various XML documents.
* The java version also added support for processing zip and gzip files. Direct
processing of httpURL based XML is enhanced.
* Extended Java version now support Iso-8859-10~16 encoding.
* A full featured C++ port is released.
* C version of VTD-XML now make use of thread local storage to achieve
thread safety for multi-threaded application.
* There are also a number of bugs fixed. Special thanks to Jozef Aerts, John
Sillers, Chris Tornau and a number of other users for input and suggestions

Group:

A couple of IPTC NewsCodes are crucial for getting NewsML 1 working: the type of NewsItems or Topics, the publishing status, Confidence, Importance or Relevance, the Roles of properties .... They are available on the IPTC server but we heard that many of the users would like to have them available locally too.

Now we have what you want and need:

Today the IPTC has made publicly available the IPTC G2 Scheme Browser software.

This Java software lets a user download the IPTC NewsCodes vocabularies – including Subject Codes, Media Topics, Genre, Scene and many more - from the IPTC web server – always the latest version – and to view and manage them locally on a computer. The NewsCodes are available as G2 Knowledge Item first but the package also includes XSLT files for transforming the NewsCodes into other widely used formats like CSV and RDF (XML and Turtle).

Please download this latest version of the Scheme Browser - http://iptc.org/goto?g2schemebrowser – and also invite other adopters of IPTC NewsCodes to make use of this software.

Any comments and feedback can be sent to this Yahoo group or to the email address schemebrowser@... . The IPTC and the developers of the tool at dpa-mediatec will consider your input.

Enjoy the tool.

Hello,

I have to implement bulletin issues in NewsML 1.2. Each issue consists of
hierarchy of sections and articles. Articles and subsections may be placed in
same level of hierarchy, for example:
section1 {
   article1
   article2
   ...
   subsection1 {...}
}
I intended using NewsComponent element. But xsd scheme doesn`t permits different
types of news object on the same level, doesn't it? For example:
<NewsComponent>
    <ContentItem>...</ContentItem>
    <ContentItem>...</ContentItem>
    ...
    <NewsComponent>...</NewsComponent>
</NewsComponent>

How can I implement issue's hierarchy?

Thank you!

Hi   alexandergas,

The usage of ContentItem is not for your purpose.
You can write all with NewsComponent to describe hierarchy.

<NewsComponent>
   <NewsComponent>
     <Role FormalName="Section"/>
     <NewsComponent>
       <Role FormalName="Article"/>
       <ContentItem>......</ContentItem>
     </NewsComponent>....end of article
     <NewsComponent>
       <Role FormalName="Article"/>
       <ContentItem>......</ContentItem>
     </NewsComponent>...end of article
   </NewsComponent>...end of sectoin
</NewsComponent>...end of top level
