Do you ever work with people who question findings from usability study using only a handful of participants? During our September 2009 meeting, Bill Albert, a local expert and author on large-scale user testing will compare different methodologies and give practical advice and guidance for conducting user experience studies that small sample skeptics would appreciate.

Please RSVP to info@... if you plan to attend so we can plan appropriately.

Topic:
Beyond the Usability Lab: Exploring Large-Scale User Experience Research

When:
Wednesday, September 30th
Networking and refreshments: 6:00 – 6:30pm
Workshop: 6:30 – 8:00ish

Speaker:
Bill Albert
Director, Bentley College Design and Usability Center

Where:
Autodesk
100 Commercial Street
Manchester, NH 03101
http://tinyurl.com/mr7y7n

Abstract:
In this presentation Bill Albert will discuss the emerging interest in large scale user experience research. This type of research involves collecting qualitative and quantitative feedback from a large group of users, as well as full suite of behavioral data. Together, these data provide tremendous insight into the entire user experience, and fills a critical gap in our methodological toolkit. In the first part of the presentation Bill will review the strengths and limitations of this approach, how it fits in with other popular user research methods, and dispel some of the myths around measuring the user experience. The second part of the presentation will focus on how to conduct large scale user experience research studies. Bill will review some vendor solutions, and provide a basic guideline on how design your own research studies with a limited budget. Bill will also provide a set of practical tips on how to collect and analyze user experience data. He will conclude the presentation with a discussion on how to move your organization forward in thinking about the broader user experience.

On Wednesday, September 23, 2009, Boston-IA (www.Boston-IA.org) will present Peter Wallack, Accessibility Program Director at Oracle Corporation (http://www.oracle.com/accessibility), sharing personal reflections about accessibility issues and the challenges of harmonizing accessibility standards across an enterprise organization. His talk is entitled, "The Accidental Accessibility Program Director".

Due to recent acquisitions (including companies such as PeopleSoft, Siebel, Hyperion, etc.), Oracle Corporation is now the world's largest enterprise software company. Peter will speak about his experiences and the lessons learned since taking over responsibilities for accessibility initiatives for the entire Oracle organization. Peter's team defines the accessibility guidelines and standards for all Oracle products to follow, and he works with user interface designers, developers, documentation writers, consultants--and the sales, education, and support organizations--to incorporate accessibility standards into their processes.

Whether or not you work for an enterprise company, there is much you can learn from the accessibility issues of a large organization.

Hello,

As p
romised, this month Maine IxDA has got anothe
r truly amazing program!

Nationally recognized artist, Adriane Herman, will be presenting Thurs Sept 24th on her creative process -- how she moves from inspiration to art. She'll touch on using people's "To Do" lists as artistic medium, and her insights into human cognitive processes.

Afterward, we'll shift gears into IxD mode, taking what we've heard from Adriane -- now having a sense of her mental map -- do some additional "requirements gathering," then sketch ideas for her web site, and discuss!

We hope you can attend -- this will be an extremely stimulating and fun event.  Please spread the word.

RSVP here.

Questions? let me know...

TITLE  From Inspiration to Art: Artist Talk & Design Activity

SYNOPSIS
Hour 1 Cocktails @White Heart (map of 551 Congress St Portland)

Hour 2   Artist Talk: "Checking It Twice - Communion with the Decidedly Un-Listless"  (map of 522 Congress St Portland)
The uniquely human “To Do” list traces the seemingly alchemical trajectory from intention to action. In both form and content, these humble documents of goals large and small yield intimate yet anonymous details about individual and collective commitments, priorities, tastes, accomplishments, and procrastinations. Paying these usually discarded documents the kind of attention generally reserved for objects preserved in museums or archives sheds light on how we spend our most precious resource – our time. A self-proclaimed "inveterate maker of mountains out of molehills," artist Adriane Herman will reveal the sources of her own alchemical trajectory from inspiration to art. And will share with us the visual fruits of her urges to collect, sort, and monumentalize other people’s jottings. She will present additional projects that reflect one of her priorities, distributing artwork to widely ranging audiences, including those who do not generally include visits to museums and galleries on their lists. Herman invites participants to bring current, recent, or heirloom “to do” lists to share with the group. A discussion will hopefully ensue about what participants feel their lists reveal about themselves and how interaction and experience design practitioners might assess the usability of list-making strategies evidenced in Herman’s trove of enumerated ephemera.

Hour 3    Design Exercise
This will be a collaborative design exploration that encourages you transform the Inspiration from tonight's program into Art/Design of your own!  We'll help Adriane get some ideas for her yet-unbuilt web site by...

- hearing details and asking Qs about the site (users, goals, requirements, etc)
- breaking into groups, duos, or working on our own to visualize and sketch one or more parts of the future site
- sharing it back to the group -- discuss one element of what we came up with

We'll get a glimpse into each other's creative process, and Adriane will get a bunch of ideas for a future website she hopes to commission someone to build . You can work solo, as a duo, or a team. All you'll need to bring is your creative spirit and your sketching or prototyping tools of choice!  Adriane will provide limited edition multiples to trade for your ideas and efforts.

Please bring laptops, paper and pencils/pens/ma
rke
rs, or whatever you choose to sketch/work with!

RSVP here.

BIO
Adriane Herman investigates consumption through appropriated imagery and media ranging from archival to edible. This Spring, she had a solo exhibition called “Human Doings” at Western Exhibitions (Chicago) and debuted a portfolio of 42 relief and silkscreen prints derived from found and gifted Post-It™ notes called “Sticky Situations” at Whitney Artworks (Portland). “Checking It Twice,” her 2007 solo exhibition held at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art and funded by grants from the Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Community Foundation, monumentalized evidence of human intention toward action as manifested in grocery and other “to do” lists. Her 1999 solo exhibition at Adam Baumgold Gallery in New York was described in the New Yorker as “appetizing silliness.” Recent group exhibitions include those at International Print Center New York; Adam Baumgold Gallery (NY); The Dalarnas Museum (Falun, Sweden); Portland Museum of Art; Ulrich Museum of Art (Wichita); and chosen barren land (Tainen, Taiwan). Herman’s work is in the collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, The Progressive Corporation, and The Walker Art Center, among others.

Herman’s independent efforts to normalize consumption of fine art dovetail with collaborative curatorial efforts such as SlopArt.Com and projects she has undertaken with students at Maine College of Art, such as “Long Overdue: Book Renewal,”which recycled thousands of books, yielding 175 artworks temporarily collectible through Portland Public Library and Inter-Library Loan. Herman holds a B.A. from Smith College and an M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has explored content in context with students at Kansas City Art Institute, Vermont College, and Maine College of Art, where she is currently Associate Professor of Printmaking / New Media and Printmaking Department Chair, and will trade limited edition multiples for lists you no longer need.

I recently posted a first draft of slides for a presentation on the Parallel
Collaborative Design process on my website at:
http://www.mylesdesignstudios.com/ParallelCollaborativeDesign.ppt

I've submitted a proposal for a presentation on this process at UPA 2010.

The slides only touch on the high points, and lack the detailed information I'd
provide in an actual presentation (I may add slide notes in future versions),
but even so, I'd be interested in feedback from other members on the content as
it currently stands.

We are looking for volunteers to present a 10-minute talk at our Wednesday
November 18th meeting, hosted by PixelMEDIA in Portsmouth, NH.

Our 10-minute talk meetings are an opportunity for each of you to share
something of interest with the membership and to practice your presentation
skills in a friendly environment. Topics can include small case studies,
usability tips, out-of-the-box approaches, mini-theories, or other usability
nuggets. In addition, the talks don't have to be related directly to usability –
ideas on topics related to the software development process, marketing, content
strategy, development technologies or others are all welcome.

Talks are strictly limited to 10 minutes and 6 slides max. This makes
preparation and presentation easy and keeps things moving for the audience.

If you are interested in presenting a 10-minute talk, please send a short
description of your topic to Megan Fields at mfields@... by Friday
October 16th, 2009. Of course, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Last week the Maine ixda chapter hosted a program in which artist
Adiane Herman showed her work -- archiving simple transient lists
(such as shopping lists, to do lists, etc) into expressive and
archival art work.

We then spent time designing possible web sites to express the
content and complexity of her work.

In a recent blog post, I outlined the approach that I developed . . .
which included a number of new "tools" to let users explore a model
of her world. I'd be interested in your reactions to my ideas --
both how they work as virtual designs, and how realistic it might be
to implement and then to maintain such a site.

My post is at

Adrian Herman's current web site is

I'd also invite you to look around my growing blog ... more on
listening to users, and also on art, spirituality, business, photography.

As we all know, exploring alternative solutions early in the design process through the use of wireframes and prototypes significantly improves chances of developing a successful design. In the past, the effort required to create multiple electronic prototype alternatives was a barrier to exploring a number of options. Fortunately, over the past several years, there has been an explosion in the number of software applications available for electronic wireframing and prototyping. These applications allow for user validation early in the design cycle, allow business stakeholders to visualize the potential solution before development, and sometimes give developers a head start with actual code.

In our October meeting, several of our members will report on their research and experience with different electronic wireframe and prototyping tools. If you are a researcher, designer, or developer, this meeting will help you stay current on the tools of the trade. Learn about Axure, Balsamic Mockups, iPlotz, Microsoft Expressions/SketchFlow, prototyping in Adobe, and much more!

Please RSVP to info@... if you plan to attend so we can plan appropriately.

Hi,

Why don't you put me down for a quick review of MockUp Screens

Do you have a template for collecting informatoin from members about prototyping tools. I t would be nice to put together an online package that is somewhat consistent and something that members could add to over time.  Something basic like:

Product Name
Cost:

Description

Screenshot (optional)

Strengths

Weaknesses

Comments

Thanks,
Chauncey

Hi Rich,

While many of these tools can do web-based output, I wouldn't necessarily
consider them html prototyping tools. If you are designing a desktop
application, a hardware interface, or something else, you could use these tools
to quickly create a mockup for users to interact with. Some of them have outputs
that can run on mobile devices too.

So while web is a natural application for these tools, there are likely some
ways to use them in other environments.

Does anyone have any specific experiences with prototyping tools for desktop
applications or other tools?

Thanks,
Mike

Attention work from home people: Thursday Afternoon Jelly!

After working out of my home office for far too long, I stumbled across a magazine article about co-working. Coworking is when self-employed and remote workers join a little tribe and work together. It offers the fun and culture of a cool office (without the politics and timeclocks).

I'm excited about the idea because I often work better when I have interesting distractions, not to mention the fact that my home office is quiet and lonely. I've talked with a few people around town that feel the same way, so we've starting a Jelly, which is essentially casual coworking. For one afternoon a week, we'll be working out of a local cafe.

Every Thursday (that's today) we work at Bagel Works, in downtown Portsmouth, from around 1:30 through 5 pm. Bagel Works mgt is excited about the idea, as long as we buy a few lattes or bagels during our stay. And its easy to join the group: I put a sign that says "Jelly" on my laptop. So, home office mavens, put on some clothing and work with us.

Best,

Nathanael

Hi All,

The NH UPA is looking for folks to help out as officers for calendar
year 2010. Serving as an officer of the NH UPA sounds fancy, official
and a lot of work, but is actually fun, pretty easy and a great way to
expand your network and help grow user experience in our area.

We have four officers - a president, vice president, secretary and
treasurer. None of the positions require a huge time commitment. The
most significant thing we do is help organize some of the monthly
meetings (and we take turns at that).

If you have any interest in getting involved or helping out, please send
me a message and I can explain more details and answer any questions you
have.

Thanks!

Is anyone able to offer some time on an evaluation this month? I'll be using the

Hello,
I'm seeking advice on how best to find usability test participants.

Do you generally offer incentives for participation?
Do you generally select people from within your organization (who may not have
familiarity with the UI) or do you select from other sources?

I appreciate any insight you can offer!

Sincerely,
Sandy

I find it's good to start with internal testers, even if it's just to pilot a
test. This will help work the bugs out before involving external participants.

Who to use really depends quite a bit on what you're testing. If it's a first
experience focused test you may want people with little to no prior experience
on the application. On the other hand, if you're testing improvements to a
product you may need people with some minimum level of experience. You need to
work with your product team to decide exactly what you want to test so that you
can narrow the scope on the types of participants you need. You also want to
plan on how the team can act on the findings after testing. Time needs to be
factored in for analysis, design revision, and implementation.

As for compensation - I don't compensate internal testers. For existing
customers it's not a bad idea to give something in return (swag), but I've found
that most customers are quite happy to participate in such testing. It makes
them feel like they are having a say in what gets built. If you need
non-customers then compensation is pretty much required, otherwise there is no
motivation to participate.

I've paid anywhere from $50 to $250 for test participants. The cost depends on
the complexity of the test and the supply of qualified participants. A 90 minute
test would be long, and require relatively high compensation to attract
participants compared to one that just ran 30 minutes. Also, if you need to test
an application for medical workers or another specialized skill you'll probably
need to pay more than you would testing the UI for say an ATM, where essentially
anyone off the street can participate.

In the past when I needed outside testers I've had good luck recruiting through
Monster & CraigsList. If you can use existing customers then you should have a
database of contacts to work from in your sales organization. It's a good idea
to keep track of customers you use, so as to avoid over utilizing a resource.
You can end up annoying a customer with too many contacts, or skew findings by
always going to the same small pool of testers.

Hope that's of some help,
