For User Experience (UX) designers, doing your job isn't easy when most of the world does not even know your profession exists, much less see its value. Some suggest that the best way to build UX and design influence is by giving talks about "the value of user experience." Others advocate ROI analysis. Others still claim that without support from the project owners or executives, you are dead in the water, and should just look for a new job. Forget all that. What you really need is the will to fight, a plan, and some well-proven strategic advice from an ancient general. In this presentation, Eva Kaniasty will use Sun Tzu's advice to take a good hard look at UX and design, its friends and its enemies, and help you plan for fighting a winning war for influence within your company or your group.

As the popularity of agile development grows, designers are being asked to adopt more agile practices into their workflow. This transition has been difficult for some designers as they struggle to find their place within established and often dogmatic agile processes, leading towards confusion and negativity.

This talk will clearly define the difference between agile principles - which above all encourage team work and an agile mindset - and agile practices such as daily scrums, stories, estimation, and burndown. Our speaker Alla Zollers will provide a balanced and honest view of agile's benefits and drawbacks for designers. In addition, Alla will cover proven techniques for working, designing and thriving in an agile environment.

This will be a great session for designers, developers and managers/executives. If you are new to agile, Alla's talk will help you understand what it might mean for you. If you've been working in agile, this talk will certainly engage you in a discussion on best practices and lessons learned.

Going to the UPA conference in Atlanta? My friend and colleague Rolf
Molich asked me to spread the word about his CUE-9 workshop. As a past
participant in one of his Comparative Usability Evaluation (CUE)
workshops, I can recommend the experience. (And if you haven't met Rolf,
I recommend that experience as well!)

Details at www.dialogdesign.dk/CUE-9.htm. Here's the summary Rolf sent
me:

CUE-9 - The Evaluator Effect, or What You Get is What YOU See

CUE-9 is a unique opportunity for usability professionals to assess and
improve their usability testing skills.

CUE-9 is about the Evaluator Effect or Rashomon Effect, which names the
observation that usability evaluators who analyze the same usability
test sessions often identify substantially different sets of usability
problems.

CUE-9 will assemble experienced usability professionals to discuss the
state-of-the-art in usability evaluation based on a common experience in
evaluating a website. Participants will independently watch five
30-minute videos from usability test sessions, write a short report
about their findings, and meet for a full-day workshop to compare and
discuss similarities and differences in findings.

Hi All,

At our next NH UPA meeting on Feb 17th, we are excited to have Fred M Abaroa with us to talk about giving persuasive presentations. In preparation for this talk, Fred has a survey that he would like our membership to take. The survey only takes a minute, but the results will be very interesting. Even if you can't make the meeting on the 17th, would you mind taking just a minute to complete the following survey:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/F5D7BG6

We are finalizing the venue for the meeting and will send out an invitation to register shortly, but here is a preview of the talk:

Title:
The Art of Persuasion - Impactful Presentations Skills

Abstract:
In today's corporate world most positions involve making presentations - be it to clients, colleagues or to management. And the truth is, just as a book is often judged by its cover we are, more often than not, judged by how we say things rather than what we say.

Presentation is more than simply standing at a podium and running through a series of PowerPoint slides. It is about engaging the audience and presenting your ideas in a clear, concise and persuasive manner.

A persuasive presentation should change the emotional state of the audience so they believe and feel a decision must be made.....right now. Your role as presenter is to motivate and incite the audience to act, think and feel differently as a result of what you've said so they will take some form of action.

Hi All,

As a group, we've talked recently about two initiatives for the NH UPA
in 2011:

1. Continue education on usability and user experience for current
practitioners as well as those who are new to usability or interested in
the field.

2. Leverage the amazing and diverse skills of the group to help
non-profit or charitable organizations in New Hampshire.

We'd like to achieve these two goals at once by putting together a
series on monthly meetings where we practice different user-centered
design activities in an effort to help a deserving organization. For
example, we may have a meeting on user research where we actually try
different research techniques and learn about the audience for the
organization. Then, another meeting could be centered around personas
where we draft personas that represent the organizations target
audience. A third meeting could be on wireframing solutions, and a
fourth on usability testing, and so fourth. Each of these activities
would give members a chance to learn from each other or try new
techniques, and the final result could be leveraged by the charitable
organization to improve their customer/user experience.

To put this together, we need ideas of organizations that we could help.
With a particular project in mind, we can start to put together a
meeting schedule that makes sense.

Does anyone have any ideas on what organization we could work with? Any
thoughts on specific activities you think could work in this format?
Please feel free to post any ideas to the list.

Thanks so much for your participation!

Wondering if there has been any consideration of recording the UPA meeting presenters, where it could then be posted to YouTube and put on the NH UPA web site. I try to make all the meetings I can, but there are some that I just cannot make (such as this coming meeting), but I’d love to keep up on what was presented on. Didn’t know if video was ever considered as an option?

Thanks!

Funny, I had just been thinking the same about an hour before your post.

I've got a fairly deep background in such things and a friend with a pretty nice pro rig. I've reached out to him about borrowing his gear. If it comes through I can at least get it recorded and then we can figure out the rest from there.

Thanks!
