I have often thought about obtaining the source to update the Access data base to the latest version and make some minor changes. Perhaps we could all get together and even buy the source. With open source we could all contribute. It is probably written in C so it would not be hard to update.

I am  amazed at how long and how useful the Slinke-e is. I have used mine daily almost since buying it. I had to buy an extra when they shut down “just in case” The only thing I can’t control via the IR leaning is my 2 PS3s. I think there might be an IR to Bluetooth adapter but just don’t see the need on the PS3 other than media playing. I often wonder if Colby’s NDA with Microsoft has a time clause in it and if we could get our hands on the source.  I tried to track him down on facebook but he didn’t answer my mail or it wasn’t him.

I made my own expansion module myself long ago and have posted details on this group. I sold off my Slink-e and the box I built a year or more but decided to get another.

From what I have found so far this is the expansion module from Nirvis to hook it up to Xantech Systems IR (VGS connections). These sold for $99 in the final days of Nirvis. I really don't need it myself as I am only going to be using the Slink-e for Control-S signals and not IR so I might look to part with it.

Would you support another Slink-e solution? I have developed my own...

http://www.av-internals.com

It has been my intention for some time to release the "client" side of this
software as open source and to release additional code as the loose ends are
resolved. Funny, I have code to support low-level and high-level IR device
files but it is a bandwidth and CPU hog so I wouldn't mind seeing that move over
to the client side of the codebase.

Hold on to your money. If you have the programming skills and can demonstrate
support for yourself (or a team) in this forum then maybe we can work something
out.

All my code is written in C (not C++). The user interface is PHP, HTML, and a
little JavaScript.

Yes you can either purchase an adapter to change the pin configuration to the opposite gender. Or you can aquire a USB to serial adapter. I saw one at tigerdirect.com for around $10…. Good luck!

Although there are inexpensive serial to USB adapters, not all of these adapters work well. Because serial data is bidirectional (as is the Slinke), I would recommend a better than cheaper one. Although I don't have first hand experience, I understand the IO Magic device works well in a bidirectional environment.

I have been using a "QATech" USB to serial adapter for the past 3 or 4 years.  It required the installation of the QATech driver that can be downloaded fromthe QATech website (if you didn't get it with the adapter).

When I first set it up, I set CDJ to load the SLINK module, and I used it to designate which com port the USB adapter mapped to.   I never bothered to change the setting back to not load SLINK (if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it).

Cheers!

I took the plunge and converted to a drive based system mainly for the eas of
handling multiple zones and streaming.

I have a CDP-CX400 and a CDP-CX455 that now need a home. Both are in working
condition and were in use until last fall when I ripped all my CD's.

The CDP-CX400 has a small crack in the door but it is not impeding performance
at all, infact it has been running for 4 years with that crack.

I'd like to see $150 for each but will take reasonable offers.

Just found this auction for LOTS of Slink-e's (approximately 100!).  Unfortunately for me - I just purchased one (as well as a couple Sony 200-disc players) -- so I don't think I need this many more!  :)

I was thinking about bidding on these.  Is there any forum here for people that are looking for Slink-e's -- or would it make more sense to simply put them on eBay.

(Sorry... I'm new here.  Was going to post a link to the auction - but didn't want to look like I'm trying to sell them.  It just seems like a group of like-minded people who might know what to do with all these units!)

Let me know if you want a link to the auction.

Thanks.

I bought one from this seller a few years back and it continues to perform well.
However the power supply that was provided was incorrect and I had to change it

mjfoxtrot44,

Having trouble with the link.  You can check it out at:

Check out auction items #15 and #19.  (50 Slink-e's in each auction!)

(I was thinking about buying 5-6 and reselling them... but then it sounded like it would take away too much time from programming my new system!  I think 50 is too many for me!)

Good luck,

I want anyone interested to know that these Slink-e's are not complete...
specifically they lack the Control-A1 ports, the Control-S port, and the IR
receiver. It is *possible* to add them, but there are other specific internal
components missing, so a person would have to know exactly what they are doing.
I know this becuase I have two of these units (acquired from LPAV). You can
quite clearly see the missing ports in the pictures if you know what to look
for. Note the shiny connector for the IR port on the left Slink-e. Now note that
there are not shiny connectors on the one on the right (there should be four in
a row for the four Control-A1 ports). Look at your own Slink-e to compare. The
connectors are clearly missing.

FYI, I visited the auction site, and it appears that you must bid on the entire lot of 50 (the top bid when I looked was just $15, though)...

Perhaps a more interesting discussion topic is whether the CDJ software will continue to work under Windows 7 or not... It would be a shame to purchase 50 SLINKE's at any price, and then to have them obsoleted over the next 12 months or so...

BTW, I am sure that there are still a lot of us that prefer CDs over MP3, and we realize that it is only a matter of time before the CDJ software reaches a real end of life....  I have seen a few different threads on substitutes, but none have had the rich features & flexibility of CDJ (another tribute to Coby!).

Has anyone found any true contenders for replacement?

Cheers!

As far as I am concerned the only reason to keep messing around with obsolete optical storage of the audio tracks is if you are in a locale that doesn’t allow for format shifting.

A 1TB drive is so much cheaper, faster and allows for you to play multiple files off it at the same time.

CDJ + changes was fine back when HDD was too expensive to have losslessly compressed audio sitting around, but about 5 years ago became of no more interest.

The useful features of a slinke nowdays are the IR support since its one of the few reliable IR receivers for PCs, and most of that is in the active-x rather then the hardware.

While I myself have recently moved to a disc based system (Sonos), I think there are several reasons to stick with a CDJ system.

Perhaps you have a system that is set up, works well, and that you are happy with.

Perhaps you like that you know that your CDs are not likely to crash or fail all at once.

If you have a sizable collection, it is expensive and time consuming to rip, groom, and back up music from CDs.

I had a CDJ system that started with 2 300 capacity Jukes and over the years grew an additional 10 400 Jukes.  Over the course of building the music collection, the data was groomed as new titles were added.

I'm wrapping up 8 mos. of all my free time being spent converting my collection to bits.  Most of this time has been spent grooming meta data.

In addition, it has been quite expensive.  I figured that either I send my collection (~4000 CDs) to a commercial ripping service (knowing that I will still have to groom the data) at $1-$1.50 disc or I rip them myself.  By the time I invested in a Raid 6 NAS, Some discs for offline  backup, a workstation, and a robot for the actual handling if discs I have close to $1 per disc invested in this project.  I do get to keep my fingers in every step of the process, which is nice as I know my collection has been ripped and the data groomed to the highest standards.

I've got about 2TB of flac that I don't fancy having to rip again.

There's been a bunch of times that I wished I could have stayed with CDJ.  It worked well for my needs. What drove the me to change was a move into a new house that did not have a Whole House audio system.  Sonos fit the bill for a refit WH audio system.

CDJ is a great system.  It is not without problems, but no system is.  If it works, I could not recommend to someone that they make the switch, in the absence of other factors.

I do agree that if you are building a collection from scratch, that starting with a CDJ system may not be the best choice.

Cheers, Pete

Cheers!
Todd

You're right. I wasn't convinced from the picture - thought it could be just
the lighting making the ca1 ports not appear shiny. But I called and emailed
LPAV and they confirmed that the hardware is missing (at least) the ca1 ports.
Thanks for the warning!

Warning! There are slinke-s being sold on eBay by user speasstuff that aren't
complete. Apparently they came from the lot recently discussed here. I
purchased 4. 3 of them had no s-link (controll a1-11) ports and the forth works
fine. I asked the user about the condition of the slink-e's in the next one's
he put up for sale but did not get a response. Beware.

Hi there,

I know there has been some discussion about that lately but I can't find the
right post.

Can anybody post the current situation and settings concerning getting CD
information from FreeDB (or another one).

Is there really nobody who can post the

I leave my home automation computer on 7/24. When the system reboots due to a
power failure, or a MS update (like last night), I want to start CDJ so it's
ready to go on command. However, I can't see any way to start CDJ without
powering on the CD changers. Anyone have any ideas? My first thought is to
write a BAT job that CDJ shells on startup. The BAT waits X seconds for CDJ to
finish, then sends a shutdown command. Seems like there should be a better way.

Why don't you just move the CDJ exe file to the startup folder in
windows. Configure CDS to power on changers.

True, not sure exactly what he is doing, its to simple to resolve the
way we do it

I use a low powered PC running XP, which is dedicated to CDJ, and I just
keep my changers on all the time. Don't even have a keyborad, mouse or
monitor hooked to it, it runs VNC so I can remotely control it from
other PCs in the house.

I'm trying to pinch pennies to save dollars. A CX455 changer uses 3 watts when
in standby versus 12 watts when powered on. (Interesting that it only uses 15
watts to play a CD.) At my electric rates, that difference is about $10/year.
With 2 changers, that's a nice bottle of wine. Of course I won't see that
savings if I want to enjoy the music. So you got me thinking that the time the
changer spends unnecssarily powered on is too small to worry about. I should
focus more on the receivers and other components.

thx
