Hi,
I have querry about the auto power off feature of
GNU/Linux. I have a copy of Caldera Open Linux and as
I installed it I found that it powered off my system
as I shut it down(which mostly happens in w*n*o*s. But
I don't have this facility in Redhat or Fedora. So is
it some small script which is doing the trick. Please
tell me if anyone knows.
Happy Hacking,
Ankur

I just received the LFY Jan 2005 CD sets. It came
with a new australian flavour of GNU/Linux, YOPER(Your
OPERation System). They demand it to be fastest on
earth. So if you want to grab a copy of your own, give
me a blank CD. Or the alternative is that I will ask
the moderator to make a copy and then you can grab
yours from him.

Hi everyone,
I just want you all to know that I just had my hands on the Fedora
Core 2 CD Pack (4 CDs). So if you do not have any DVD drive and can
not try the Fedra Core 3 available with LFY Dec'2004, you can have it
like this. So if you find it interesting you can contact the group
moderator and I could copy him the 4 CDs so that you all can get it
from him. And if it is already available, trash this mail!!!!
Anyway,
Sincerely,
Ankur Chakraborty
Hello Members,
If you have collecetd the LFY Dec, 2004 DVD you must
have tried out
the Fedora Core 3 (2.6.9-1.667). Its very exciting
distro however with
a big FLAW.So here's the flaw and the solution.
As I installed it in my PC with intel 810e video card
I found that
the desktop components would wash out as I drag them,
making it
impossible to work on it. I found the solution at
Bugzilla and it
works. Edit the boot line of grub to delete the last
two words and add
3 to get to runlevel 3. Now open the file
/etc/X11/Xorg.conf , find
the section with "Video Card", add the line:
Option "NoAccel"
Note:~Add the line exactly i.e, Option "NoAccel"
completely.
For clarity I am attaching my Xorg.conf file.
Thanks and Happy Hacking,
Ankur Chakraborty

I have tried various versions of Micosoft Windows OS. Now, the Windows Server 2003, Enterprise is the worst OS I have ever seen. Rather I should use "worstest". This is the second time I am using it in a span of 1 year. Because I constantly change my Windows versions for some tasks. There is an illusion in Win2003 that you are working in a very secure environment and to handle this Bill Gates has done something which is of no use. The system is becoming slower as days passes. All the softwares were installed during OS installation. which dates back to only one month. Due to our semester, I restrict myself only to Java & net surfing (no games). The present booting time is 1 min. 15secs. Above this, one day, after starting my machine and finding all documents while I was connecting to the internet then a dialog box appears which tells that "your system will restart momentarily." Time limit 30
secs. What a shit!!. Ok, the machine restarted according to its own will, then I had to provide reasons "why it was shut down improperly". Good enough. Again when desktop appears, on a dialog box it was shown that your computer has been restarted badly........" I forget after this. Can anybody tell me why this happens.
Thanks for such a beautiful gift to nixal before exam. Obviously it erases some pressure before sem. You have composed a wonderful thing specifically the Windows Air -> it explodes... Linux..with the seat... pretty funny. This material highlights the basic diff. between so called OS's in a very peculiar though straight forward manner.
All passengers should realise their needs. If some passengers are thinking to change their preferred airlines, all they have to do is to forget various matters of the previous airlines before trying the new airline. After all, these all are airlines, each have their diff. approaches to customer survice. The approaches may be drastically differrent. Customers should not compare each and every step of service provided.
They need to see if their needs are satisfied in a well organised manner like this:-
a)whether they are getting a better & smooth journey, b)are enough care taken about "every" passenger, c)if somebody is curious can he know about the airplane, d)if meals provided, are they good, e) the plane will not obviously blow up but if he is the only passenger cum pilot , then intensionally he can blow up the plane, f)If new passenger is boarding a plane for the first time, then Does he get handy materials(in built & from other v.easily reachable sources) about the service(how to etc) well in advance in order to check & explore his fundas. h)If he is an experienced guy, does he able to explore, rebuilt, modify, a worldclass airplane that will satisfy his needs in particular. i) If somebody is interested can he join the "Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines" who built this airline. j)the cost of the ticket.
This is the time to just take the taste of another airlines. But the important thing -> passengers should not compare every step of the approach. Since these are diff. airlines, the approaches for customer care is different. If somebody can not eat a Chinese dish, it is his fault. That does not mean Chinese foods are bad. Chinese foods are made for Chinese only. Keeping all these in mind let's try the Airlines for which we are here. If it doesn't suit to somebody no problem, but in very near future he will understand which one is dependable, if he is with the airlines industry.
What if Operating Systems Were Airlines?
DOS Airlines
Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then
they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the
ground again, then they push again jump on again, and
so on.
OS/2 Airlines
The terminal is almost empty, with only a few
prospective passengers milling about. The announcer
says that their flight has just departed, wishes them
a good flight, though there are no planes on the
runway. Airline personnel walk around, apologising
profusely to customers in hushed voices, pointing from
time to time to the sleek, powerful jets outside the
terminal on the field. They tell each passenger how
good the real flight will be on these new jets and how
much safer it will be than Windows Airlines, but that
they will have to wait a little longer for the
technicians to finish the flight systems.
Once they finally finished you're offered a flight at
reduced cost. To board the plane, you have your
ticket stamped ten different times by standing in ten
different lines. Then you fill our a form showing
where you want to sit and whether the plane should
look and feel like an ocean liner, a passenger train
or a bus. If you succeed in getting on the plane and
the plane succeeds in taking off the ground, you have
a wonderful trip...except for the time when the rudder
and flaps get frozen in position, in which case you
will just have time to say your prayers and get in
crash position.
Windows Air
The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly
stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a
smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air,
the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.
Windows NT Air
Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much
bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft
within a 40-mile radius when it explodes.
Mac Airlines
All the stewards, stewardesses, captains, baggage
handlers, and ticket agents look the same, act the
same, and talk the same. Every time you ask questions
about details, you are told you don't need to know,
don't want to know, and would you please return to
your seat and watch the movie.
Unix Airlines
Each passenger brings a piece of the airplane and a
box of tools to the airport. They gather on the
tarmac, arguing constantly about what kind of plane
they want to build and how to put it together.
Eventually, they build several different aircraft, but
give them all the same name. Some passengers actually
reach their destinations. All passengers believe they
got there.
Wings of OS/400
The airline has bought ancient DC-3s, arguably the
best and safest planes that ever flew, and painted
"747" on their tails to make them look as if they are
fast. The flight attendants, of course, attend to your
every need, though the drinks cost $15 a pop. Stupid
questions cost $230 per hour, unless you have
SupportLine, which requires a first class ticket and
membership in the frequent flyer club. Then they cost
$500, but your accounting department can call it
overhead.
Mach Airlines
There is no airplane. The passengers gather and shout
for an airplane, then wait and wait and wait and wait.
A bunch of people come, each carrying one piece of the
plane with them. These people all go out on the runway
and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing
constantly about what kind of plane they're building.
The plane finally takes off, leaving the passengers on
the ground waiting and waiting and waiting and
waiting. After the plane lands, the pilot telephones
the passengers at the departing airport to inform them
that they have arrived.
Newton Airlines
After buying your ticket 18 months in advance, you
finally get to board the plane. Upon boarding the
plane you are asked your name. After 6 times, the crew
member recognizes your name and then you are allowed
to take your seat. As you are getting ready to take
your seat, the steward announces that you have to
repeat the boarding process because they are out of
room and need to recount to make sure they can take
more passengers.
VMS Airlines
The passengers all gather in the hanger, watching
hundreds of technicians check the flight systems on
this immense, luxury aircraft. This plane has at least
10 engines and seats over 1,000 passengers. All the
passengers scramble aboard, as do the necessary
complement of 200 technicians. The pilot takes his
place up in the glass cockpit. He guns the engines,
only to realise that the plane is too big to get
through the hangar doors.
BeOS Air
You have to pay for the tickets, but they're half the
price of Windows Air, and if you are an aircraft
mechanic you can probably ride for free. It only takes
15 minutes to get to the airport and you are
cheuferred there in a limozine. BeOS Air only has
limited types of planes that only only hold new
luggage. All planes are single seaters and the model
names all start with an "F" (F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18,
etc.). The plane will fly you to your destination on
autopilot in half the time of other Airways or you can
fly the plane yourself. There are limited
destinations, but they are only places you'd want to
go to anyway. You tell all your friends how great BeOS
Air is and all they say is "What do you mean I can't
bring all my old baggage with me?"
Linux Airlines
Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines
decide to start their own airline. They build the
planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways
themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost
of printing the ticket, but you can also download and
print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane,
you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy
of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully
adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves
and arrives on time without a single problem, the
in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers
of the other airlines about the great trip, but all
they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

HACKERS WANTED, FSF CALLING: From the FSF-India mailing list
http://mm.gnu.org.in/mailman/listinfo/fsf-prog there's a word of advice from
Anand Babu <ab@...>: "Yes I am need of developers for Free Software
Projects. If you are new to FSF projects, (you can get started) like this
* Setup a Debian GNU/Linux system (best distro for developers)
* Create an account for yourself at http://savannah.gnu.org.
* Take a look at current GNU Task List at
https://savannah.gnu.org/people/?group=tasklist
Choose one and start hacking. This process will help you prepare yourself
with the GNU's way of hacking software. Then, when you feel you are ready
for the main stream, you can jump into GNU Hurd kernel hacking (the most
important pending task).
Anand Babu <ab@...> said at another time: "Kernel hacking is too
difficult for newbies. I need developers with sold experience in C and
system programming with a Hacker's attitude. I would recommend newbies to
start hacking at the applications level, submitting patches, getting
familiar with GNU coding standards and Free Software development model."

PROMOTING A PROPRIETARY FORMAT, FORCING A PROPRIETARY APPLICATION: V. Sasi
Kumar <vsasi@...> of the Centre for Earth Science Studies in Tvn
writes: "Indian Institute of Science asks alumni to fill up their details in
a document in MS Word format. This is a mail I sent them more than two weeks
back. No response as yet.
"Sir, I find that the proforma for membership records is given in a
proprietary format (MS Word) which forces me to use a proprietary
application. Indirectly you are promoting a particular company's software
that uses a closed format for its files, which is not a very good practice
for an internationally reputed institute like IISc.
"Instead, I suggest that the proforma be made available in open formats like
Postscript, PDF, XML, etc. This would enable anyone using any word processor
or any free application (like xpdf, Open Office, etc.) to read the file
without loss of formatting. May I also point out that even our President,
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has prompted scientists and technologists to move
from proprietary software to free software for several reasons, including
national security and economics."

I want to learn the Linux Administration. Can somebody refer me a good book or some websites from where I can get this. If anybody get information on Linux projects ( eg. system programming etc. etc. )please inform me. Bye.......
Ankur,
I think u r a little confused about the idea of kernel
and you r doing some guess work. I am afraid to tell
tht you must not answer a question if you are
confused. (I think you told me that u dont hv any
formal knowledge of an OS) u can refer to websites if
you dont know the answer, but dont answer to that
questn.
Answer according to me:
Kernel is that part of an OS which manages a computers
resources. that tells pretty much what kernel is.
sometimes the OS itself if referred to as the kernel.
A kernel gives us some tools to use the computers
resourses - we call these routines system calls.
kernel is the layer above the hardware. it will sit
above the harware and provide us with functionalities
that we can use to control the computer without
knowing the details of harware issues. So, u can think
of it like - kernel is made with the common part of
all the programs that require the knowledge of the
hardware.
Example:
Suppose you want to write "hello world" to a file
called "test". If we never had a kernel then, you have
to know ur hard disk details - ( like samsung or
segate ) then according to that u must know where the
cylinder starts.. etc etc so ur program would be aprox
1000lines.
But we have a kernel, so we can write a program with a
line fprintf(fp,"Hello world"); so the fprintf will
tell the kernel what to do and kernel will take care
of your hard disk. So the kernel manages your
computers resources like this. It does manage many
other resourses. I think the idea is clear to you
rabi.
And plz remember we are not "linux group". We have the
name Nixal, and we call it the GNU/Linux user group of
NSEC.
plz also refer to www.kernel.org and try a google
search.

The kernal is the core of the operating system that is, it maintains the main purposes of an O.S. like memory management, process management etc. It is has more a monolythic structure than a moduler one. The other modules grow over it creating a huge O.S.. These modules may be the X-server or the GNOME if we consider Linux. These modules do not do the base jobs of the O.S., ruther they request the Kernal(who's job is to do these jobs) to get these jobs done. So we see that the kernal is the base that we must need in order to do the repetative tasks like I/O, Process Management etc.
This much is what I can tell you about kernel. Hope others will be able to help you more on this.
Happy Hacking!

u r right. u need to install jdk for linux. the java
which is given with linux is similar to gcj. it does
not have all the slass files. so u need to use jdk for
linux. jdk1.4 beta version is not a good option. dont
use the beta. use jdk1.3 instead. if you get jdk1.4
(not beta) u can use it too.

Supratim,
when you specify a problem u must specify it
explicitly. Dont think of your problem as the only one
that appears to happen in the universe. send details
of the error message and if you can your analysis of
the problems. I didnt have any prob with swing or
applets. There are some initial warning regarding
function keys, but there are no termination errors.

In the latest seminar of NIXAL, free CDS of Knoppix 3.3 were distributed. It is a live CD. However, in case you don't know it can be installed, too. The following procedures can be followed.
Procedure 1: Boot the OS (from CD) and as you get to KDE, start a terminal (you don't have to start a terminal if the Xserver does not get connected, may be due to lack of resources). Now switch to root by su.
then give the command knx-hdinstall. the install script starts.
Procedure 2: At the boot prompt(from you CD) type the following
knoppix lang=us vga=normal 1.
This will not start Xserver and will get you to single user mode. Now type
knx-hdinstall , and the installation starts.
[Note:~ I recommend the 1st procedure as it ensures whether your system is resourceful enough to run the Xserver(if you are a GUI lover, otherwise both the procedures are the same).
At the post install configuration, choose GUI to log in to as this version suffers from a bug to choose which desktop manager to choose so choose KDE, SORRY, NO GNOME IS THERE]
I just joined the group. I saw the query baout the JAVA GUI IN LINUX. I have RH 9 on my pc and jdk 1.4 installed and I successfully ran an AWT as well as a Swing program in Linux. I guess you haven't yet set the CLASS_PATH and the JAVA_HOME enviornment variables. Use the export command to do that. If it still does not work I can send you my copy of the program that I successfully ran. You can try it.
