We are sad to announce that Paul Natanson, long time NJCC member and contributor, has died after an extended illness.

His family has suggested that in lieu of flowers, people send contributions to a favorite charity.  Because of Paul's dedication to the field of computers and their applications, certainly a most appropriate one of those charities could be the NJCC Memorial Scholarship Fund.  This way, Paul's memory can live on in the works of others, especially young students who might otherwise not be able to afford to continue their studies.

As most of you know, this fund was established several years ago to help young people with financial need to pursue their dreams in this field.  It was inspired by the generous giving of time and talent of several of our Club's founders who worked determinedly to make us all computer literate.  As one of their test cases, I am grateful for what they have done for me, and for all of us at NJCC who even now continue to benefit from their efforts.

For those of you who wish to make a contribution, please write your checks to "NJCC Memorial Fund" and mail them to me, Doris Smith, at 151 Deer Ridge Road, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920.  We will then send a card including the name of each donor (not specifying amount of donation) to his family, letting them know we continue to honor him and all he has done for the Club.

Please mail these in as soon as you can, as we would like to get the card out promptly, and make the appropriate announcements at our next Club meeting.

Doris Smith

Chairperson,  NJCC Memorial Fund

This is a special NJCC meeting for two reasons:
First, it will feature Gene Barlow, who for many years has been our most
frequent and most appreciated speaker. He is the foremost expert on hard
drives, and his presentations on how to use them and back them up are in
demand by User Groups across the country.
Second, Gene will be making his presentation via a web seminar (webinar)
from his office in St. George, Utah, using Skype and Unyte audio and video
conferencing. This is the technology that will most likely be used for
presentations in the future, including a similar broadcasting of our NJCC
meetings via Live Meeting to those in other locations.
Please make every effort to attend this meeting, and please forward this
meeting notice to your friends and associates to also invite them at no
cost or obligation. This is a special meeting that both you and they will
not want to miss.

Acronis True Image Home 2009

Gene Barlow, a frequent presenter at NJCC meetings, will lead a Webinar from St. George, Utah using Windows Live Meeting technology to help us understand the many new features of the top rated backup utility, Acronis True Image Home 2009. The new features include:

  • New User Interface – Acronis completely redesigned an already superior user interface to make Acronis True Image Home even easier to use.
  • One-click Protection – Start up Acronis True Image Home after installation and the program will automatically take stock of your computer storage devices and it will offer to protect your system right away.
  • Archive to the popular zip format – Now you can specify file-level backup archives as zip files in addition to Acronis’ space-saving tib files and flat file archives.
  • Encryption of archive data - Protect sensitive data from prying eyes.
  • More archive location options – Save full, incremental and differential backups of a data entity (for example, a partition, disk, E-mail) almost anywhere you like.
  • Make reserve copies of your backups – Save them on the file system, a network drive, or a USB stick.
  • Automatic backup to a removable drive – If you have chosen a removable drive for your backups, but it is not attached when a scheduled backup time is set to occur, Acronis will automatically start the backup  to that device as soon as you plug it in.
  • Automatic computer shutdown after backup or restoration finishes – Launch a backup at night and walk away without bothering about turning off the computer – the program will do it for you.
  • Consolidate backup files – You can define rules for consolidating your archives to reduce storage space.
  • Automatic consolidation – Set limits on the size of backup archives, the maximum number of backups you want to keep, and the maximum amount of time archives are to be stored.
  • Use Google Desktop and Windows Search to search for files – Use either search engine to find files through multiple archives.
  • Try & Decide enhanced - Create a temporary, safe place on your hard disk where you can perform changes to your system that otherwise might not be advisable, such as installing new software, downloading files from the Internet, or opening e-mail attachments

Additional Meeting Info

The NJCC is entering a new era in meetings and presentations! Called "webinars",
"live meetings", "video conferencing", and other names, meeting presentations
can be made or viewed remotely.

For example, at our April 8th NJCC meeting the presentation will be on
"Backing Up Your Hard Drive" by Gene Barlow from his office in Saint George,
Utah.
We will be remotely connected by both video and audio to him, so that we can
participate in the presentation just like we were in the same room.

We also have the opportunity to have future NJCC meetings broadcast live to
NJCC members in their homes or elsewhere, with the opportunity for them to
participate in the meeting directly via audio or video.

Another potential opportunity is for us to participate live with other user
groups in their meetings or programs.

To give you a better understanding of this technology and how it works,
please come to our March 11th NJCC meeting by 6:45 PM to see a 30 minute
presentation on APCUG's "Live Meeting Training", followed by a short Q&A
period.

Time permitting before Rich Byrne's feature presentation at 7:30 PM on
how to run multiple operating systems on a PC, I will also share recent
experiences on warranties and tech service that I am sure will be of
interest to you.

Finally, if you have not yet paid your $25 NJCC dues for 2009, please
do so in order to participate in future NJCC programs and activities.

Multiple Operating System on your PC

Rich Byrne, 1st Vice-President of the NJCC and former President, will lead this presentation on using multiple operating systems on your PC.

Would you like to try out a new operating system?

How about surfing the internet without risk to your system and files?

Need to run Windows XP along with Vista?

There are several ways to accomplish these tasks on an up to date PC or Laptop.

We will cover and demonstrate virtual machines, booting from external drives, and other hardware solutions to the above questions.

Virtualization will become commonplace in the enterprise environment.

You can take advantage of its benefits at home right now.

MEETING PLACE:
North Branch Reformed Church
Route 28
Bridgewater, NJ

HOW TO GET THERE:
Driving on Route 22 West: Turn right at the light at Milltown Road. Go to the end of the street. The church is directly across the street.

Driving on Route 22 East: Continue past Milltown Road (no left turn allowed) to the Route 28 off ramp (next exit). At the end of the ramp turn left onto Route 28 and continue about 0.6 miles to the church (on your right).

NOTE: The church is exactly one mile East of the main entrance (at Orr Drive on Route 28) to Raritan Valley Community College.

Microsoft Windows Vista

Doug Beck, Webmaster of the NJCC, will demonstrate Windows Vista, explaining some the key differences that the newer OS has with XP. For the presentation, Doug will access his personal computer (running Windows XP) using a  Remote Desktop Connection from his work PC (running Windows Vista) and point out some key differences with OSes actually running, one within another.

Doug will specifically point out some of the security "upgrades", including the constant notifications that Windows Vista provides. Also, Doug will show and explain some of the most common UI differences, including the "streamlined" start menu, the modified Windows Explorer, and some other improvements. Since it is important for the club to be aware of the difference in versions of Windows Vista, Doug will be sure to show the table of features for the different versions using Microsoft's website.

Since he will be connected to his home PC with Remote Desktop, Doug can also provide a brief overview of Remote Desktop, if the members present are interested.

Doug graduated from Rider University at the Magna Cum Laude level with a double major in Computer Information Systems and Entrepreneurial Studies.

If you wish, bring your laptop, sign on to the wireless internet access network and join Doug in reviewing Vista's features.

New NJCC Blog

Doug Beck, NJCC Webmaster, will demonstrate the new NJCC blog that he has been working on for the club. He will show how to access the blog from your PC, how the content from the original NJCC website has been organized on the blog, how members can post articles and comment on each others' articles/comments, and how the blog is managed by Doug.  If the membership is interested, Doug will show how to start their own blog using the WordPress website.

Remote Access & Remote Desktop

Fred Sabin, NJCC President, will describe and demonstrate how to install and use these tools which are available in several M/S Operating Systems.

Remote Access allows a friend or a technical support person to access your computer to show you how to do something on your computer. Both you and the other person see the same computer screen. If you should decide to share control of your computer with your helper, you will both be able to control the mouse pointer.

Remote Desktop allows you to connect to another computer from any other computer such as to your desktop computer from your laptop. You have access to all of your programs and files as if you were sitting in front of your desktop. While you are connected to your desktop, the desktop monitor screen will appear blank to anyone who sees it.

How Computer Crimes are Solved

Musa Husseini will talk about how court-validated tools and practices are used to solve corporate and criminal cases involving the use of computer systems.

In this presentation, we will answer the following questions:

  • How to recover data from computers while preserving evidential integrity.

  • How to securely store and handle recovered data.

  • How to find the significant information in a large volume of data.

  • How to present the information to a court of law.

Mr. Husseini graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1996 with a major in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. He taught numerous highly technical subjects including DOS, Windows 9x/2K/XP/2003, Linux, system architecture and the boot process, examination techniques and procedures, recovery of deleted files, computer networking and systems administration. He has over 10 years of experience in the IT field. His instruction focuses on understanding the invasive threat of computer crimes and the use of practical end-user available counter measures.

Computer forensics deals with the preservation, identification, extraction, documentation, and interpretation of computer media for evidentiary and/or root cause analysis. The need for computer forensic services and equipment has derived from the widespread use of personal computers and mobile devices in both business and the home and the subsequent needs of crime investigators to have access to computer based information.

Building eBay Advertisements

Doug Beck, Webmaster of the NJCC, will build eBay advertisements as we watch. He would prefer to build advertisements for members but if no members have any items they want to sell, Doug will build ads for some items he wants to sell. If you have an item you want to sell, please bring descriptive information about it to the meeting. A picture, model number or similar information would help.

Doug graduated from Rider University at the Magna Cum Laude level with a double major in Computer Information Systems and Entrepreneurial Studies.  In his college career, Doug had some unique experiences, including an independent study that allowed Doug to learn how to effectively buy products from wholesalers, distributors and even some "inexperienced sellers" on eBay and then how to effectively market those products on eBay for resale.

We will modify the room set-up to provide additional tables. If you wish, bring your laptop, sign on to the wireless internet access network and join Doug in building eBay ads.

Excel 2007 vs. Excel 2003

Paul Natanson, a frequent presenter at the NJCC as well as other computer clubs in central New Jersey, will show some of the most important differences between the new version of Excel 2007 and the old version of Excel 2003 and workarounds.

Paul will review the positives and negatives of Excel 2007 compared to earlier versions of Excel. The new version is geared toward new users not experienced power users. The menus, toolbars and drop down menus are replaced with a “ribbon” of groups of functions. Excel users accustomed to the older versions will require a bit of relearning since the organization and location of the commands are much different. Come see many of these differences and learn how to overcome some of the challenges presented by the new software.

eBay Selling & Buying - Part 2

Doug Beck, Webmaster of the NJCC, spent about 90 minutes at the March 12, 2008 meeting of the New Jersey Computer Club showing many of the features of buying and selling items on eBay. Due to the many questions and strong interest of those in attendance, he was not able to cover everything he planned. A vote was taken and the consensus was to continue going through this topic at the April 9, 2008 meeting.

He will continue his eBay presentation on April 9 and share his extensive knowledge on eBay techniques with all in attendance. If you have any interest in selling or buying on eBay, come learn some of the best processes to use.

Quicken and TurboTax Software

John Beck, 2nd Vice-President of the NJCC and Program Director, will lead us in a review of the features and uses of these software products that can save you time and money. The Quicken products can be seen at www.quicken.com and the TurboTax products are at http://turbotax.intuit.com/ .

We will use a Quicken demo to understand the simple process of setting up Quicken. We will then explore many of the useful features of the software.

We will also populate our own data file and then transfer the tax related data to the TurboTax software for use in our tax return. We will also take a look at some of the tax information available at www.irs.gov .

If time permits, we will:

1. Review the process of selecting the appropriate version of the software.

2. Explore the various places to buy the software.

3. Create some useful reports from our Quicken data.

NJCC Holiday Party/Chinese Auction

Fred Sabin, President of the NJCC, and Rich Byrne, 1st Vice-President and past President of the NJCC, will coordinate the annual Holiday Party and the Chinese Auction at this meeting.

For the Holiday Party, members are requested to bring in their favorite holiday food, snack or drink to share with all on this special occasion. Please remember that the North Branch Reformed Church is a "NUT FREE FACILITY!" NO foods containing nut products of any type are allowed in the facility.

Our regular Chinese Auction will feature useable software and hardware donated by members. Please bring in items to donate to this. We only want Windows XP compatible hardware and software, since Windows 98, 98SE and Me are no longer supported by Microsoft. Only small hardware items (as notebooks, small USB devices, etc.) sell. Do NOT bring printers, monitors, large towers, etc. ANYTHING YOU BRING THAT IS NOT SOLD MUST GO HOME WITH YOU! NOTHING IS PUT IN THE NBRC GARBAGE! A limited number of free tickets will be available to NJCC members, with the option to purchase an unlimited amount of additional tickets for bidding on these items.

A special Auction, with the format still to be determined, for NJCC Members ONLY will feature new software and other items donated to the NJCC.

All proceeds will benefit the NJCC Memorial Award Fund.

New Meeting Agenda

Due to a scheduling conflict, Tom Kirk from Creative Labs is unable to
make his presentation. It will be rescheduled to the February or March
2008 meeting.

We had many positive comments regarding the Google presentation done by
our Webmaster, Doug Beck, at the October meeting. Because he was unable
to complete his presentation at that meeting due to time constraints and
several attendees from the October meeting indicated Doug may have moved
too quickly through the list of Google features, Doug has agreed to
continue the presentation concentrating on questions and answers but
also going through some of the best features a second time.
