New Meeting Agenda

Due to a scheduling conflict, Tom Kirk from Creative Labs is unable to
make his presentation. It will be rescheduled to the February or March
2008 meeting.

We had many positive comments regarding the Google presentation done by
our Webmaster, Doug Beck, at the October meeting. Because he was unable
to complete his presentation at that meeting due to time constraints and
several attendees from the October meeting indicated Doug may have moved
too quickly through the list of Google features, Doug has agreed to
continue the presentation concentrating on questions and answers but
also going through some of the best features a second time.

To all,

The attached (PDF format) Windows Secrets article on "Carry a flash drive
instead of a laptop" ( http://www.windowssecrets.com/ ) came out this
morning! It is a multi-part article (to be continued) on the same topic
that I presented at last night's NJCC meeting. Our/their timing on this
confirms that we/they seem to be on the same wavelength with current
computer topics of interest.

I would strongly recommend that you all subscribe to their free newsletter
if you do not currently do so. It is probably the best computer newsletter
available regularly by email.

Very best,

Fred

PS to Rich Byrne: Please send this article to our NJCC membership via NJCCMAIL.

Blogging

by Jeff Jarvis

Jeff Jarvis blogs about media and news at www.Buzzmachine.com. He is associate professor and director of the interactive journalism program the City University of New York's new Graduate School of Journalism. He writes a new media column for The Guardian in London. He is consulting editor of Daylife, a news startup. He consults for media companies.

Until 2005, he was president and creative director of Advance.net, the online arm of Advance Publications (creator of NJ.com). Prior to that, Jarvis was creator and founding editor of Entertainment Weekly; Sunday editor and associate publisher of the New York Daily News; TV critic for TV Guide and People; a columnist on the San Francisco Examiner; assistant city editor and reporter for the Chicago Tribune; reporter for Chicago Today.

Jeff is well known as one of the nation's most influential media moguls.  He appears frequently on television and is quoted widely as someone who courageously (and sometimes controversially) takes issue with traditional media approaches.  His ideas have stimulated a new sector of thinking about how the general public and the media interact--and which drives which.  He and his son, Jake, will be talking to us about Blogging: what it is, the advantages, the dangers and how to set up and use Blogging appropriately and successfully.

The attached article on "WiFi Safe Surfing" was in today's mailing. This is
a great example of how the NJCC and Windows Secrets both address current
issues of interest to our membership.

Genealogy

by Werner Kruck and Abner Mathews

Genealogy is the study and tracing of family pedigrees. This involves the collection of the names of relatives, both living and deceased, and establishing the relationships among them based on primary, secondary and/or circumstantial evidence or documentation, thus building up a cohesive family tree. Genealogy (often misspelled "geneology"[1]) is often also referred to as family history, although these terms may be used distinctly: the former being the basic study of who is related to whom; the latter involving more "fleshing out" of the lives and personal histories of the individuals involved.

Werner and Abner, longtime members of the New Jersey Computer Club, will share their experiences in gathering their families' information and the various ways they have put it together.

NJCC SPECIAL MEETING

ALL NJCC MEMBERS ARE INVITED AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND!

This meeting will focus on the future of the NJCC, and membership inputs are needed!

The current tentative agenda for this meeting includes:

    1) Future programs:

      What do we want?

How often will they be given?

Where and when will they be given?

      Who will give them?

    2) Membership:

      What size do we want?

      How will we achieve it?

      Publicity considerations?

      Dues considerations?

      Membership responsibilities?

    3) NJCC Memorial Award:

      Should we continue it?

      Should we change it?

      How will we fund it?

Time permitting, Fred Sabin will then make a presentation of Acronis Disk Director 10 plus the new Microsoft VISTA operating system.

Rich - Will you please send the following to our NJCC membership via
NJCCMAIL? Thanks, Fred

Webroot "Spy Sweeper" Offer

The New Jersey Computer Club has again received a very generous donation to
our NJCC Memorial Award program from Webroot Software, Inc., of multiple
retail copies of their award winning "Spy Sweeper" (go to
http://www.webroot.com for details). This program has won multiple awards
for the best anti-spyware software available.

I and many other NJCC members have used "Spy Sweeper" for many months, and
I recommed it fully!

"Spy Sweeper" is sold by Webroot with a one year "subscription" for $38.90
(with CD and shipping), or $29.95 (with program downloading). The
"subscription" includes all program updates, all definition updates, and
technical support (for one year).

We are offering the "Spy Sweeper" CD with a one year subscription to NJCC
members on a first come first served basis for only $15 (while supplies
last)! If you want to purchase a copy email me at: president@... OR
fsabin@...

If any copies remain, you may purchase them for $15 at our January 10th
NJCC meeting.

Very best regards,

Fred (Sabin)
President, NJCC
