Re: [njpodcasters] Is the bubble bursting for Podcasting 1.0?

Hey Gene,
How have you been?  Glad to see you are still ......ing.

I for one still don't and never liked the word podcast but what do I know about branding and marketing. What tipped on the web in July 2004 needed a name and the community around pushing the already full pot latched onto it.  The word "Podcast" is in itself limiting .  But that conversation has taken place online a thousand times and why even waste the free bits and the brain cells.

The past or ending cycle (however you want to see it), in the future will probably be refered to the "Podcasting cycle" or "Podcasting 1.0" only if the market continues to hold onto the branding for a couple more cycles.  Whatever it was called it was significant and will never be forgotten.

As smart device OSs such as the BlackBerry start to embrace media in the core of their OSs and connectivety to the Interent by these devices becomes inexpensive and available to the average Joe (notice I resisted writing Average Ordinary Guy)  the market will shift significantly to a different place.

...and new players will build on that cycle's progress and the evolution will continue to the next cycle.  You just never know how long these cycles will take.

But I think it's what's expected.  Its not that it's dying but just transforming.
Basically, online on-demand content is what is still alive.  I know we've been getting away from the word "podcast" because I think it's a little limiting.
Essentially every site now has downloadable audio, video etc....  sometimes with an RSS feed sometimes not.

I do think you'll find someone who will buy odeo and transform it into a massive platform for the same content just less "podcasty" and more about a variety of mediums (video, games, audio, etc..)

just my thought

Anyone out there looking to pick up a Podcasting 1.0 company cheap?  I hear ODEO is for sale.

So is podcasting over or is it just Podcasting 1.0 coming to an end.
Looking through my glasses I see these kind of events as cycles and parts of a bigger evolution.  So I am hoping that there is more half full that half empty to this cycle as I am not surprise at all to see some of these 1.0 trees beginning to fall.  Stay tuned because more changes/bigger trees of Podcasting 1.0 are still to fall.

To simplify, new media on the web was just to big for what these Podcasting 1.0 companies were selling and trying to be.

I know it's Friday, but I'm interested in knowing and how you see the changes happening in Podcasting right now?

I agree. To take it a step further I anxiously await the day the term "podcast" is completely eliminated from the face of the earth. It's entirely too limiting...
