Hi everyone,

So, the NJPA has kind of run its course. The podcasting landscape has changed, people are busy, things got too formal. BUT...that doesn't mean we can't get together!

Brad P. and I (with some inspiration from Harold) are going to hold a new media meetup. From Brad's description on Facebook:

We'll sit... we'll eat... we'll talk...

We're not going to reserve space, just because we don't know the actual interest level. We'll grab a table, and we'll be fairly easy to spot...

the geeks at the table...

with the laptops...

talking loudly...

So, if you want to stop by on Wednesday, October 10 at 7PM, go to either of these links:

FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=7391130538

UPCOMING: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/289646/?ps=5

Hope to see some of you there.

Neal,

How long are your PodCasts going to be? I mean, are they intended to be stand-alone, or are they usable as a "show segment"?

Please give a listen and if you like any of them, please consider

Hi folks:

Following up on this thread, I just wrote a tutorial and review of the iRivers, as well as some of the microphones I use with them. It's about 3000 words and I hope it's helpful.

There are three sample recordings available on my site through the flash player on the left side. The headset microphone that has impressed me a lot is one I mentioned last week on another thread-The RadioShack Hands-Free Headset Microphone 33-3012. It is $30 in the USA and pairs up nicely with the iRivers. One of the sample recordings was made on a short car trip, and for those who like to podcast from a car (or when walking around outside), I think it's a really good choice. It is very susceptible to picking up plosives and breathing sounds, but with a little adjustment in placement, I have been very happy with the results. I also sometimes use the mic for Skype with an M-Audio Mobile PRE USB preamp/interface.

You can find the article here: <http://imagingbuffet.com/?p=241>

All the best,

Andrew

Hi Mark:

I have a PDF all about the iRiver ifp800 series which have been discontinued, but they are available on EBay and other retailers as refurbs. I have a 512mb and 1gb version, with a 256mb version on the way. They cost from about $50-100 and I think they do a fantastic job when paired with the right external mic.

I expect to post the PDF by this Friday with some added info but I will send it offlist now to you. It will be on http://www.imagingbuffet.com and I hope it is helpful.

Yes folks, it's late notice once again, but the NJPA will have a table
at the Trenton Computer Festival this year. So this Saturday and
Sunday, April 28 and 29, come on down to The College of New Jersey in
Ewing, NJ and say hello, man the table for a bit, and help get the
NJPA back in the groove.

Hope to see you there!

Suggest folks take a look at the Olympus DS-2 handheld dictation device for an entry level field recorder. It has built-in stereo mikes, a jack for external mike (you can get stereo external mikes), and it downloads in WMA format through a USB cradle. It retails for about $125 at Radio Shack.

I dug up a couple of listings on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.com/iRiver-IFP880-MP3-player-FM-radio-Voice-record-B_W0QQitemZ30\

These are the iRivers that have an option for switching to an External
Mic for recording. (700 and 800 series)

Thanks to Vinny as well, I'd not heard ofa Zoom before, I need to
check that one out.

Mark-

I use the Zoom H4. It has built-in stereo mics which I use for
recording performances, but it also has 2 hybrid mic jacks (1/4 inch
or XLR) for input. I use an Audio-Technica headset mic or an MCA SP1
condenser mic. It has onboard phantom power (24 or 48v) and uses 2 AA
batteries (4 hours/ 2 hours with phantom power running) or the
included AC adaptor.

It also has a clip for mounting on a camera tripod, a windscreen, and
records to up to 2GB SD cards. I get about 3 hours of .wav and 2 days
of .mp3, I think. (NO podcaster records to mp3, right?)

Here's a speaking opportunity for someone close to Cherry Hill. Please, only members close to that area send me an email at njpodcasters @ gmail.com. Let me know if you've presented anywhere this year already, as those who haven't presented already will get the first shot. From the email below: "We are currently seeking speakers for our May 14th and July 9th meetings.Would either of those dates work for you? "

Marty,
I'm happy you and your group enjoyed my TechBuilder article. Chris, who was
kind enough to send the email below, is more highly qualified than I to
speak on podcasting. I'm thinking he might know someone close to Cherry
Hill, as well.

If the schedule allows, I'd be happy to speak to your group sometime in the
future. Keep in touch. -Andy

Hi Andy,

I'd love to speak with you about podcasting, but I've been kind of out of
the scene for a few months, what with work and personal issues taking over.
I can provide info on vidcasting, if you're interested in that. Otherwise, I
can give you a couple of members of the NJPA to speak with who will be great
for your article. They are:

Lynette Young

Brad Pendergraph

and of course, our resident audio gadget geek,

Good luck with your article.

Hi Andy,

Our user group, the PC User Group of South Jersey, is lining up speakers for
our next several monthly meetings. Several of our members have requested
information on RSS and podcasting.

I discovered your article on these topics on the Techbuilder website and I'd
like to invite you to be our guest speaker at one of our upcoming meetings.

We have about 140 members and about half attend most of our monthly
meetings, which are held on the second Monday evening of each month. Our
group's web site is www.pcugsj.org. It is currently undergoing a major face
lift. Directions to our meeting location and a map of the area are provided
on the web site.

We are currently seeking speakers for our May 14th and July 9th meetings.
Would either of those dates work for you?

Please feel free to contact me by email or phone (856-266-7331).

Regards,

Because of the weather and ACGNJ's concern for everyone's safety. We
are canceling the meeting tonight and hopefully Brad will be able to
present next month.

Chris -
The ACGNJ meeting tonight is canceled on account of snow. I have informed Brad
about
the news. I tried to post on POD Casters site with no luck. We would like to
re-schedule the presentation on a night when there is no snow threat. I will
work it
out with Brad.

i think you're both jumping the gun

speaking just as hobbyist (only 25 episodes at groggyjava.tv) and enthusiast i am of the mind that there never really was a podcast 1.0 bubble.
the mechanics are still too clunky and haven't really become seamless yet

i know what you're thinking -- "but subscribing to podcasts is sooooo easy", but if you can work a DOS prompt your opinion on the word "easy" doesn't count --hell if you know what the phrase "rss feed" means you're disqualified from any ease-of-use conversation, period.

easy means my mom can do it, and brother, it ain't there yet.

more people i talk to than not have no idea what podcasting is, or have an ill-conceived notion of what it's about -- and as a web developer/software programmer, i run in pretty geeky circles

i think it's still got a year or so to go before newbies and luddites can actually work the technology
my sister teaches media at a community college in england and it's not even in their textbooks yet

so before we start wearing black arm bands and telling dot-bomb-style war stories, let's remember that technology takes a long time to become commonplace.

just think of how long before average person even knew what e-mail was

Basically, online on-demand content is what is still alive.  I know we've been getting away from the word "podcast" because I think it's a little limiting.
Essentially every site now has downloadable audio, video etc....  sometimes with an RSS feed sometimes not.

I do think you'll find someone who will buy odeo and transform it into a massive platform for the same content just less "podcasty" and more about a variety of mediums (video, games, audio, etc..)

just my thought

Anyone out there looking to pick up a Podcasting 1.0 company cheap?  I hear ODEO is for sale.

So is podcasting over or is it just Podcasting 1.0 coming to an end.
Looking through my glasses I see these kind of events as cycles and parts of a bigger evolution.  So I am hoping that there is more half full that half empty to this cycle as I am not surprise at all to see some of these 1.0 trees beginning to fall.  Stay tuned because more changes/bigger trees of Podcasting 1.0 are still to fall.

To simplify, new media on the web was just to big for what these Podcasting 1.0 companies were selling and trying to be.

I know it's Friday, but I'm interested in knowing and how you see the changes happening in Podcasting right now?

I agree. To take it a step further I anxiously await the day the term “podcast” is completely eliminated from the face of the earth. It’s entirely too limiting in my opinion. We don’t even use the word any longer…we just tell people we do an online radio show…sometimes I use the word webcast. Yes, I am aware there is a content delivery platform in existence called Webcasting, but 99.9% of the population doesn’t.

When I used to tell people we do a podcast I would usually just get a blank stare back. Everyone knows what “online” and “radio show” mean.

So, death to podcasting. Long-live online, on-demand content and RSS….however it may be reborn in the near future.

Hey Gene,
How have you been?  Glad to see you are still ......ing.

I for one still don't and never liked the word podcast but what do I know about branding and marketing. What tipped on the web in July 2004 needed a name and the community around pushing the already full pot latched onto it.  The word "Podcast" is in itself limiting .  But that conversation has taken place online a thousand times and why even waste the free bits and the brain cells.

The past or ending cycle (however you want to see it), in the future will probably be refered to the "Podcasting cycle" or "Podcasting 1.0" only if the market continues to hold onto the branding for a couple more cycles.  Whatever it was called it was significant and will never be forgotten.

As smart device OSs such as the BlackBerry start to embrace media in the core of their OSs and connectivety to the Interent by these devices becomes inexpensive and available to the average Joe (notice I resisted writing Average Ordinary Guy)  the market will shift significantly to a different place.

...and new players will build on that cycle's progress and the evolution will continue to the next cycle.  You just never know how long these cycles will take.
