After this thread started, I decided to take another look at nntprss.
I found that after doing a cvs checkout, just running ant worked.

Has anyone managed to build a working jar? This is something above my

I'll love to have links in atom-feeds working.

Thanks Jason for this update, as someone else said, a nice gift :-)
I won't have the chance to do the build, so I'll wait for your release.
Thanks.

Hi guys,
As you probably know, there has been limited development activity on
nntp//rss for the past couple of years. Work and family commitments
have taken up the majority of my time, leaving limited opportunity
to work on projects such as this one. That said, I did have some
time to finally push some modifications into CVS, especially related
to the handling of Atom feeds.
Here's a few updates of note - introduced after the previous release
of 0.5-beta-1:
- Support for xml:base and relative links within Atom feeds
- Fixed issue with Atom <link> elements - previously only those with
explicit rel='alternative' were used for the original posting link -
those without the rel attribute were ignored. This applies to both
entry links and the overall feed link
- Fixed issue with Atom XML namespaces - previous version only
support the purl.org namespace, new version also supports the
official w3.org namespace - this resolves issues with empty content
on certain Atom feeds
- Support for HTTP feed redirection with relative URLs
- Support for URL-encoding with HTTP usernames/passwords
- Improved start-up times for large channel sets
I will try to make a prepackaged release containing the changes
available soon, however if you would like to try out these changes
in the interim, pull down a copy of the project from CVS and run the
ANT build (default target). This will generate an nntprss.jar and
nntprss-start.jar. You can just place these into the root directory
of your existing 0.5-beta-1 install (make a backup first), and
stop/restart nntp//rss.
Happy holidays!

Yes, alive. But uncapable of programming :-( But I use nntp//rss for
years an have the same problem with urls in posts. Sometimes they
miss.

I have recently started using nntp/rss for fetching atom feeds. Would
like to have the original url for the blog entry in the nntp message
so that I can go to the original blog entry in the browser.
Also having trouble setting up MetaWeblog, but I guess that's a low
priority item for now.

Sometimes it's helpful just to write down a few things. I makes you look
for the configuration again ... and it seems that I missed the
possibility of using MySQL till now.
It's o much faster! Thanks for listening anyway.

Hi,
I'm using nntp//rss for years now, and I'm wondering if there is a new
version of this fabulous tool? I'm running v.05 beta 1 and are almost
happy with it.
On my IBM Netvista 733 running windows 2000 it is rather slow and
newspolls via the hamster-newsserver are sloooow. One posting a
second ... if everything is fine. Sometimes the poll interrupts. javaw
is using about 90MB of ram when running nntp//rss.
How can I improve performance? I think the databases are a bit too big.
There is one with about 130MB, but I've set nntp//rss to only keep the
last 4 days. Where can I see, wich cXXX.dat corespondent with wich
channel?
Greetings

The first time I did it, it started successfully, but I couldn't access
the service via HTTP or NNTP. Subsequent uninstalls and reinstalls gave
the following dialog box when I tried to start the service:
"The nntprss service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some
services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example the
Performance Logs and Alerts service."
> I could access the admin

Nothing happened. BUT!!! I left the service installed
(unintentionally), rebooted, and before I tried another test I noticed
that it was still installed and the Services admin interface indicated
it was "Started", so I tried it with my newsreader and then the web
interface, and I discovered it's working now!
Wild speculation: on this machine, you need to install it, leave it
installed, and reboot. At any rate, I'd never done that before, and
when I did it, it started working. Beats me why.
> You may want to try uninstalling the service

When the service failed to start, out.log was empty and err.log contained:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/methodize/nntprss/Startup
one instance of that line for each attempt to start the service.
Currently out.log is full of lines showing what it did (I'm going to
have to remember to turn that off once I'm convinced it's going to keep
working), and err.log contains:
19:35:39.375 EVENT Starting Jetty/4.2.3
19:35:39.421 EVENT Started HttpContext[/]
19:35:39.812 EVENT Started SocketListener on 0.0.0.0:7810
19:35:39.812 EVENT Started org.mortbay.http.HttpServer@10ffb38
I suspect they're just logged events. Verdad?
Many thanks. I have no idea why rebooting worked, but when it comes to
Java on this computer I've got a black thumb. I'm think it's miraculous
that when I uninstalled and reinstalled the JDK and JVM before trying
this series of tests, my Java applications still worked.
Thanks again.

Bob,
Ok - I just gave this a try on a machine that didn't have nntp//rss
installed. I downloaded a fresh copy of JavaService 2.0.10 from
ObjectWeb, and unpacked it. I then downloaded a copy of nntp//rss
0.5b1, and installed it into c:\program files\nntprss.
I then copied JavaService.exe into c:\program files\nntprss, and ran
the following command from that directory:
javaservice.exe -install "nntprss" "c:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_06
\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll" "-Djava.class.path=c:\program
files\nntprss\nntprss-start.jar" -start
org.methodize.nntprss.Startup -current "c:\program files\nntprss"
This resulted in the following message -
"The nntprss automatic service was successfully installed"
I then went to the Services Control Panel applet, and was able to
successfully start the nntp//rss service. I could access the admin
interface by going to http://127.0.0.1:7180 in my browser.
Does this compare to what you did? If you're still having issues,
it looks like the JavaService supports '-out_log_file' and '-
err_log_file' parameters that can be used to redirect output to a
file (run "JavaService -help install" to see the description of
these parameters). You may want to try uninstalling the service
then reinstall with these parameters to see if anything gets dumped
to the files.

Let me give it a try back here, and I will get back to you with my findings.
Just one quick question - do you see anything in the windows event log? Or
does the service wrapper create any log files? You could also double check
nntp//rss's log.log file see if there are any errors being reported.

Hi,
the rss feed of "fefe's blog" <http://blog.fefe.de/rss.xml> has it's
whole text in the <item><title> tag. Reading it with my news reader,
it appears that this title is truncated in the Subject: header of the
corresponding news article, nntprss creates.
Can this somehow be configured?
Version:
0.5-beta-1
Max
Well, not really. But I blogged about nntp//rss before discovering
this group:
http://blog.crispen.org/archives/2006/05/10/news-in-news/
Btw, has anybody got nntp//rss to run as a service with jdk 1.5.0_06
and JavaService 2.0.10? I get it to announce it installed
successfully, it shows up in my Services applet, but when I try
http://127.0.0.1:7810/, it doesn't connect. Likewise for my news client.
Here's my command string (it's all one line, regardless of how Yahoo
hacks it up):
JavaService -install "nntprss" "C:\Program
Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_06\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll"
"-Djava.class.path=C:\Program Files\nntprss\nntprss-start.jar" -start
org.methodize.nntprss.Startup -current "C:\Program Files\nntprss"
Am I leaving something out? nntprss.exe works fine.

For unit testing may I recommend TestNG (http://testng.org/) instead of
JUnit, it's supposed to be more powerful and flexible (I never used it
though).
Well.. where/when do I start ? :)
BoD
Hi BoD,
Yes, the project is still active, although the amount of development work
over the past year has been minimal due to my work commitments. That said,
I do want to continue the project - and appreciate your offer of help.
There are a few pending TODOs that need to be done to finalized 0.5 and
bring it out of 'beta' - including updating to the latest version of Derby,
and the latest version of the HTTPClient. There is also a bug that I need
to fix related to URL-based authentication, and a couple of outstanding bugs
related to categories - have you used these much?
Another thing that I really would like to do (and maybe this is also
something you could help with) is spend some time tuning the Derby database
and how nntp//rss uses it (indexes etc) - the main goal being to improve
performance, and also provide a set of tuning parameters that, for machine
with restricted resources, will reduce the amount of memory it uses.
Finally, one thing that would be very useful - and is definitely missing -
is a collection of automated test cases that exercise the whole system. I
had envisioned an automated test environment using JUnit and Jetty (to act
as a web server to serve up RSS/ATOM feeds over HTTP/HTTPS) - but never got
around to starting that development.
Best Regards,
Jason

Hello!
I'm a happy user of nntp//rss for several years now.
I'm currently using v0.5-beta-1 which is great, however it seems that
there have been no activity for a long time now.
These are a few features that I think would make it an even greater tool:
. the possibility to retrieve the "pointed-to" articles, instead of just
the content of rss item.
. gateway to email instead (or in addition to) nntp
. (don't know the feasibility of this one): the possibility to have
comments posted as replies
What is the status on the project, is there any development still
undergoing?
I am myself a Java developer and would be happy to help or to
participate in any way to the project.
Thank you!

Hi,
I just posted a response to this over on the nntp//rss forums:

Basically, nntp//rss does not yet support the NEWNEWS command -
however I strongly believe that using nntp//rss to enable MS
Exchange for RSS feeds is a great use case, and will look at getting
this into a future release. Would you be interested in helping out

In nntp//rss v0.3, the historical flag means that items are permanently kept
in the database.
You can take a look at the following forum post that describes how to
manually purge items from the database:
http://www.methodize.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28
However, I'd recommend that you consider upgrading to nntp//rss v0.5b1.
Aside from a number of new features, it now supports expiration times for
historical articles, and will automatically purge those from the database.

If Historical is set to true, how long each item is stored in the DB
before actually purged? If the items are not purged, how to tackle
the ever increasing DB? I am using version 0.3.
