I think that even if you disable Ad-Aware and go through the settings
in TrendMicro you will still experience a significant performance
hit. On the one hand, that is the cost for adequate security. But on
the other, you need to maintain a level of productivity. If tech
support can't help you try something else. I've installed Kapersky on
a couple of machines and haven't heard anything negative from the
users.
Maybe somebody else has some more input for you.

Hi,
Upon trying to do my backup using the ol' faithful highlighting and
sending to a CD, I received this message: "Windows encountered a
problem when trying to copy this folder. What do you want to do?"
The folder is identified as "Outlook Express." I saw no folder by
that name. I laboriously sent each folder in my file individually to
the CD and by the process of elimination the folder labeled "Systweak
Backup Manager Pro" duplicated the problem message above. When I
looked in this folder I have no idea what it is or what any of it
means. Yes yes I did look on Google, but am still not clear what
it all means. I've done backups many times successfully and this is
the first time this has occurred. I have and have always had several
folders in my "Documents" that were just there when I booted my
computer for the first time when it was new. I've just left them
there. I'm not sure this is one of them or something else.
Incidentally, I find my computer seems to be taking longer to boot
up. (I'm using Windows XP.)
1. What should I do to eliminate my backup problem?
2. Am I in trouble?

Basically what Mike York told you is good advice. You did not mention
if you are already using an anti-virus program. Or is this one of
those, click "It's FREEEE!!!!", so you clicked and got trapped. Those
are the worse!.
Can you get to any other site when using Internet Explorer? If so, have
you then tried to go to <Tools><Internet Options> and select this other
site as your default Home Page?. Does the home page automatically
change back to this "Spy Crush"?
Have you looked in <Control Panel><Add/Remove Programs> to see if
this "Spy Crush" is listed there? If so, can you remove it from there?
I use a full coverage antivirus, spyware, e-mail security package
called Trend Micro PcCillin that costs a few bucks, but really does a
great job of keeping my butt and my computer clean while I play around
on the net. If you have more than one computer in your control, you can
get a package that can be installed on 3 computers for one price. The
company is still Trend Micro, but the software package has change its
name to something like PcCillina Internet security.
Just some thoughts---Good Luck:

Sorry to hear you've picked up Spy Crush. My son picked up something similar and it was pure hell removing it. Try http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=remove%2BSpy%2BCrush to find discussions the removal. My wife's computer was running McAfee and it removed only parts of it. I downloaded and installed Windows Defender and surprisingly it removed the rest of it. Be very careful when using any of the free Anti-Spyware/Virus software, much of it is malicious. Stick with the ones like AVG, AdAware and SpyBot S&D.
Anybody else reading this, let Norman know your favorite tool or any other suggestions.
Good Luck and let us know how you fare.

How do I get rid of "Spy Crush" that keeps blinking on the Task Bar?? It is either "X" or "??" and when the Baloon come on it moves my Cursor and the typing stops and I have to put it back and resume. I ran ALL my scans and this persist's. I even today could not even get on my Home Page becuase the Home Page was www.spycrush.com and doing their FREE Scan didn't help. They want the $50 to register and I rather not. I even did A restore to this past Friday and that didn't work either.
For the last 3 years I've been connecting to the Georgia Pacific
extranet once a month to submit a report. Last month I started
getting a message that the browser couldn't find the address.
Actually only the GUI browsers (IE7, Crazy, Deepnet Explorer,
Seamonkey, Firefox and Opera) couldn't find the address. Lynx was able
to open the site but Lynx is useless in this domain. I've yet to find
a similar problem with any other domain/site and I am able to connect
from other machines inside the firewall. Points to my local machine.
I did go through the firewall to make sure it wasn't blocking my
machine. Flushed the dns cache. Checked the hosts file. Changed DNS
servers in the TCP/IP properties. Tracert and ping immediately report
unable to resolve address. If I put in the IP Address of the login
page it will open but I can't navigate from there. Does anybody have
any suggestions where else I can look for the problem?
Thanx,
Mike York
I added Yahoo Answers to the bottom of the nopc_help home page. Take

As a bit of a follow up. I've received some wonderful comments off
forum and I want to delve a little deeper into the subject.
When Windows does an automatic date/time update it resets the Real
Time Clock to local time as set by the local computer. Linux resets
the RTC to UTC. So, when I restart the computer and check the
date/time in bios and Windows last updated the time, the RTC shows
local time. Conversely , if Linux last updated the time, the RTC
shows UTC. Of course that was before I told Linux to stop doing that.
Linux, Unix and most of the Operating Systems are UTC based while
Windows isn't. If you're working in an environment that has trouble
dealing with the two hours a year that Daylight Saving Time creates an
ambiguity, then you have to set Windows to UTC and make the mental
conversion from what you see on the desktop clock. I haven't had much
time to play with Vista, but it looks like now you can set Vista to
use UTC and display a second clock set to local time.
While I was looking around I would see statements to the effect that
UTC and GMT are not the same thing but close enough for all practical
purposes. Basicly it comes down to GMT being based on the rotation of
the earth around its axis and the sun (which isn't completely regular)
and UTC being based on a Cesium atomic clock (which is far more
accurate and regular). UTC is regularly modified with "leap seconds"
so that it matches up to GMT to be the standard for date/time stamps.
Also, UTC is the authoriative measurement for calculations involving
duration.
So there you know what I know. I really appreciate the feedback I've
gotten.
Mike York
<snip>
Thanx Ed,
Thursday night I went to the NOLUG meeting and Joey Kelly and the guys
gave me a little insight into the subject. I later found this post on
the ubuntuforums site:
Re: Clock Problems
I had the same issue. I believe it stems from your original install,
when the setup program asks you to set up the time. The way I
understand it, Windows uses local time, and I set U to use Greenwich
Mean Time. The result? My Windows clock was always about 5 hours fast.
Solution was as posted above, change UTC to "no" and reset your clock.
I followed the instructions below for 5.10 (Breezy Badger
Open a terminal and log in as root.
Type: sudo gedit /etc/default/rcS and hit [Enter]
Edit UTC=yes so it reads UTC=no
Save the edited file and close it.
Click System -> Administration -> Time and Date
Set the correct time/date
In the terminal type: sudo /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh restart and hit [Enter]
This seems to have done the trick.

Zulu time (GMT) (UTC) is ahead of Central Time by -6 hours, When
Daylight Savings kick in and we "spring forward", then the offset is -
5.
I was reading another group's messages, and the comment was made that
times shown were taken from the Windows clock. Or was it the clock on
the Motherboard?
That's a thought...on start-up go to Bios check and see what the
motherboard clock setting is!!!
If that reads correctly (I would assume for Win VU, then you only have
to figure out how to adjust the setting in Kubuntu..
Hope these thoughts help.

I assume you checked the obvious such as making sure that all the
connectors from the power supply to the Motherboard were properly
seated? You might also consider removing them and re-seating them,
as in the Metairie humidity, they might have picked up some
corrosion.
However, I suspect that the power supply may be going! I read about
a relatively cheap tester from Compu USA. Or if you have another
power supply sitting around try a substitute.
f course, knowing what the Motherboard beeps mean would be abig
help!!
Good Luck.

I have both Kubuntu and Win VU set to update time automatically but
upon booting into either one of them the clocks are wrong. Kubuntu

Greetings,
This weekend I set up one of my machines to dual boot Kubuntu (Linux)
and Windows Vista Ultimate. Kubuntu was already installed on my
machine. I first tried to use the Gparted that was already loaded on
the machine, but that didn't work. I downloaded the most recent
version to make a bootable cd. Shrunk the partition for linux
creating some unallocated space on the drive and then shut the machine
down. Upon restarting, I am assuming, during the POST I got the
following messages:
Alert! Previous Fan Failure
Alert! Previous Thermal Failure
Alert! Previous Voltage Failure
Hit F1 to continue ....
I get what I think are two long beeps. I still have to find out which
brand motherboard I have and check out the beep codes. The fans turn
till the machine shuts down. Free of dust, no observable impediments
to the airflow. And once on the machine has run for over 24 hours
without a problem. It won't "Restart", it shuts down completely and I
have to power it back on manually with the same messages.
Is it possible that Gparted did something to create this situation?
Since I can't find any real evidence that something is really wrong
can I assume that this is like the car with the ever present check
engine light that runs without a problem for 10 years? I'd appreciate
any feedback you guys could provide.
Mike York
You have a pretty good chance to recover it if you haven't overwritten
the disk yet. If you did you may still have a chance. If you don't
already have a recovery tool on your computer you can try PC Inspector
File Recovery at
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm. I've only
used it once a long time ago and it worked for me. As I remember it
wasn't real easily to use but they are now a couple of versions higher.
Good Luck and let us know how you're doing,

Norman: Isn't your computer still in warranty? If so, is there a warranty station locally for it? I remember you had to buy a new one after the storm ruined your other, and also that you were delayed in getting it, so I am hoping you are still in warranty.
i can't take this anymore today spending most of the time on "Samsung" and "Google>> and TSST Corp to HP" I got to talk to someone at the above mentioned and I thought I downloaded "Firmware" from www.samsungodd.com and trying to find this page I had earlier in the day. I have A CD looking icon next to the clock and the Interactual DVD went from 2.0 to 2.6 and it still don't play A DVD. I even had the name or part of the name of the Movie on Drive C intead of Drive E. The real mosel number is TS-H552L version 9614 OEM HP. I did searches and it came up Sorry for that Model and the one you had TS-H522L. I did find it some kind of way and it had Adobe with table of contents and "Index and Drivers etc. nothing happened when I clicked on them. The HP with the model number TS-H552l [I think] had no way of doing downloads. It brought to A page with A whole bunch of different products and I didn't see the one I needed. It had 16x and about 10 to 12 version's of DVD Players etc. and the drivers don't EXACTLY spell out what I need.
I edited Norman's message - my
i can't take this anymore today spending most of the time on
"Samsung" and "Google>> and TSST Corp to HP" I got to talk to someone
at the above mentioned and I thought I downloaded "Firmware" from
www.samsungodd.com and trying to find this page I had earlier in the
day. I have A CD looking icon next to the clock and the Interactual
DVD went from 2.0 to 2.6 and it still don't play A DVD. I even had the
name or part of the name of the Movie on Drive C intead of Drive E.
The real mosel number is TS-H552L version 9614 OEM HP. I did
searches and it came up Sorry for that Model and the one you had
TS-H522L. I did find it some kind of way and it had Adobe with table
of contents and "Index and Drivers etc. nothing happened when I
clicked on them. The HP with the model number TS-H552l [I think] had
no way of doing downloads. It brought to A page with A whole bunch of
different products and I didn't see the one I needed. It had 16x and

InterVideo WinDVD and InterActual Player are software. The TSST Corp
TS-H522L refers to the hardware. The TS-H522L is the device you put
the DVD disc into and that is made by Samsung. Get the driver from
Samsung for the DVD drive and install it. If that doesn't do the
trick get with either HP or InterActual depending on whether or not
InterActual Player was bundled with the computer.
We learned very little when our computers worked properly. We learned
a lot more when things went wrong and we had to find solutions. Keep
asking questions here and google terms you are unfamiliar with.
You'll sometimes pick it slowly, then there are times when you will
make quantum leaps. Already you know more than a lot of people with
computers.

Sorry, wasn't trying to be cute, but...
IMHO
An abbreviation for in my humble opinion, this term is used in various
online communications, such as e-mail messages or postings to
newsgroups or BBSs; it usually appears in brackets like this: <IMHO>.
Using this term is a way of making sure that others understand that
you are merely expressing your opinion on a debatable subject without
passing judgment.
From what I gathered from your first message the manufacturer of your
DVDW Drive is Samsung. If you need the driver and you can't get it
from HP you may find better success going to the manufacturer's site.

for HP. I will try this later, right now it is 5:45 PM and i have to
go fix my Salad for tonight.

The link may not have worked if your email client wrapped the line
causing a part of the url to appear on the next line. Make sure you
put everything between the "<" and ">" in address bar. Unless you are
using AOL you should be able to link from the message area here in
yahoo groups.
InterVideo and InterActual aren't the same thing. InterActual is
dependent on InterVideo to supply the DVD decoder. If InterVideo is
broke InterActual won't work. Kinda like if your Goodyear tire is
flat your Chevy won't work properly.
Were InterVideo, InterActual, Sonic, etc. bundled on your machine or
did you add any of them and which ones? Exactly which Sonic product
do you have? Do you have your DVD drive autorun enabled?
I firmly believe you can fix this without having to restore your
computer. But if you don't have much on it, it may not be a bad idea.
That would have to be your call. You'd have to backup all your data
files and reinstall any programs that didn't come bundled with your puter.
If anybody else out there has any suggestions, ideas or answers, now
is pretty good time to speak up.

First, I hate to hear that you hate to write again. Members helping
members is not only the purpose of this forum but a fundamental tenet
of NOPCC. So feel free to write anytime you encounter difficulties no
matter how seemingly trivial. We all can learn from these discussions.
Second, to address your problem. I'm not very strong in this area but
I did do a little research. From the InterActual site
<http://player.interactual.com/default.asp?code=AP>
"Microsoft Windows 98se / Me / XP:InterActual software is integrated
with the most popular DVD player/decoder available-- InterVideo WinDVD
(released December 2003). This is the best way to experience
InterActual Features, since you get all the benefits of WinDVD and
InterActual compatibility in one solution.
If you use a DVD decoder that does not have InterActual integration,
you can still enjoy InterActual Features by installing the InterActual
Player software included on the DVD. Using this solution, your DVD
Video and all InterActual Features will play in the InterActual Player
application."
From that it looks like InterActual needs InterVideo WinDVD to work
properly. You may have to check out support at
<http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/Support.jsp>.
Your Sonic product may not have a DVD Decoder and WMP-11, Realtime and
Quicktime almost certainly do not. So you need to find out whether
WinDVD or Sonic is going to provide the decoder and repair or update
the driver.
The closest Optical Disc Drive I could find is the Samsung TS-552x.
Where the "x" represents the many versions of the now discontinued
drive. I'm guessing tech support wanted you to download the drivers
for your ODD and then update the driver through Device Manager. If
you need to update your driver you can find out which model you have
by looking through the Device Manager and expanding the DVD/CR-ROM
Drives. Go to the Samsung site at
<http://www.samsung.com/support/productsupport/download/index.aspx>
and drill down through the step by step method. Find your model and
the appropriate firmware for your machine and save it making note of
the filename and path (usually best to download it to the desktop and
blow it away once you're done.)
Not to wantonly plug a vendor but if you are a subscriber to Smart
Computing you are entitled to tech support from them. IMHO the OEM
support only deals with hardware and software that came out of the
box. Anything you add or modify limits their ability (willingness) to
help. All too often they suggest restoring the computer to it's
initial condition.
I hope I didn't confuse the issue anymore or point you down the wrong
path. If anyone else can make some better suggestions, speak up. i
wish you the best of luck and when you do find a solution let us know
so we can reference it if necessary.

Do as Mike suggests first and if you still need help go to Google and
type in "What does the error message "The Memory Can't Be Read" mean"
and you will get a number of sites to try to find an answer.
Don
Well, Yahoo Mail is web based by way of a web browser like IE, Firefox
or Opera. Outlook Express is an email application used for POP3
accounts. I'm guessing you want to set Yahoo as the default email so
that when you click on a link with the "mailto" tag you can use your
Yahoo mail account. The only way I know to do this is to subscribe to
Yahoo Mail Plus. It isn't free but it is only 19.99/year. Pretty
much makes your Yahoo mail a POP3 account. Check out the following
link and see if this solves your problem.

My guess is that the offending application is running on those
occassions when you get the error message and it is not when you
don't. The next time you see the message, try to catch the
application name. If your OS is Win2k or WinXP, you can try looking
through the Event Viewer. Once you find the application you can try
to reinstall it, upgrade it or simply uninstall it if you don't need it.
Good Luck

Don,
Thursday morning I finally got around to attempting the import myself.
I took the approach of importing the outlook.pst file from the old
computer to the new computer. It worked fine and the new computer
behaves just like the old. I was an administrator on both computers
and I had to unhide folders. Right now I'm doing this from memory so
I may not have the path exactly correct but the target file is in
c:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst. If you have them networked make
sure to enable sharing on the source folder and give permission to the
user on your destination computer.

Don,
I haven't had a chance yet to work on this but I am about to have to
do the same myself. Can you let me know how you performed the inport
and from which email client.
