Um daginn eftir taka þau tal með sér, Þorgils og Guðrún, en Guðrún hóf svo mál
sitt: "Svo þykir mér Þorgils sem synir mínir nenni eigi kyrrsetu þessi lengur
svo að þeir leiti eigi til hefnda eftir föður sinn.
During the next day they, Thorgil and Gudrun, begin to talk with one another,
and Gudrun began his speech thus: "It seems to me thus, Thorgil, as my sons
cannot bear sitting because they wouldn't look for revenge for their father.
(Z. hefja 3 -- hefja mál sitt, to begin one's speech)

And that has most delayed here until it seemed to me they, Thorleikr and Bolli,
too young here to take part in plots against a man's life. (Z. mannráð,
n. pl. plots against a man's life; standa í mannráðum, to take part in such
plots.)

And considerable has necessity been that (be) remembered somewhat before."

Þorgils svarar: "Því þarftu þetta mál ekki við mig að ræða að þú hefir þvert
tekið að ganga með mér.
Thorgils answers: "Because he don't need to discuss this case with me that you
have refused (?) to go with me.

But all is to me that same in mind and before when we have this direction to
talk.

Ef eg nái ráðahag við þig þá vex mér ekki í augu að stinga af einnhvern þeirra
eða báða tvo þá er næst gengu vígi Bolla."
If I were to get married (literally "a marriage") with you, then it doesn't grow
big in my eyes to thrust of them each or both then who nearest went (to) Bolli's
fight. (Z. vaxa 3 - e-m vex e-t í augu, a thing grows big in one's eyes)

Gudrun said: "So it seems to me as Thorleik to be highly esteemed not equally
well to fallen to be one who excells if that shall somewhat work which would be
to hardiness. (??)

And it is not hiding from you that the boys intend to give notice to Helga
Hardbeinson, beserkers, who sits in Skorradale at his farm and who apprehends
no danger." (Z. ugga 1 - ugga ekki (lítt, fátt) at sér, to apprehend no
danger, be off one's guard)

Þorgils mælti: "Aldregi hirði eg hvort hann heitir Helgi eða öðru nafni því að
hvorki þykir mér ofurefli að eiga við Helga eða einnhvern annan.
Thorgils said: "I don't care whether he is named Helgi or another name because
it seems to me neither too much to have to do with Helgi or someone other.

Er um þetta mál allt rætt fyrir mína hönd ef þú heitir mér með vottum að giftast
mér ef eg kem hefndum fram með sonum þínum."
It is concerning this case all spoken about for my hand if you call me with
witness for me to get married if I come we avenge in front with your sons."

Guðrún kvaðst það efna mundu allt er hún yrði á sátt þótt það væri við fárra
manna vitni gert og sagði hún að þetta mundi að ráði gert.
Gudrun said for herself that would fulfill all which she would speak to that
agreement would be with done (with) fewer men's witnesses and said she to this
would to advice made.

Guðrún bað þangað kalla Halldór fóstbróður hans og þá sonu sína.
Gudrun asked (to) call to that place his foster brother Halldor and then his
son.

Þorgils bað og Örnólf við vera.
Thorgils asked also for Ornolf to be with (them).

Guðrún kvað þess enga þörf: "Eru mér meiri grunir á um trúleika Örnólfs við þig
en eg ætla þér vera."
Gudrun said that (was) no necessity: "It was to me more a suspicion of Ornolf's
faithfulness with you than I intend you to be."

Þorgils bað hana ráða.
Thorgils asked for her agreement.

Nú koma þeir bræður á fund Guðrúnar og Þorgils.
Now the brothers came to meet Gudrun and Thorgils.

Þar var Halldór í tali með þeim.
Halldor was there in conversation with them.

Guðrún segir þeim nú skyn á að "Þorgils hefir heitið að gerast fyrirmaður ferðar
þeirrar að veita heimferð að Helga Harðbeinssyni með sonum mínum að hefna Bolla.
Gudrun now tells them of an understanding that "Thorgils has been called to
become the leader of their journeys to assist a journey home to Helgi
Hardbeinson with my sons to avenge Bolli.

Hefir Þorgils það til mælt ferðarinnar að hann næði ráðahag við mig.
Thorgils has expressed that, the wishes that he get a marriage ("get married)
with me.

Nú skírskota eg því við vitni yðru að eg heiti Þorgísli að giftast engum manni
öðrum samlendum en honum en eg ætla ekki að giftast í önnur lönd."
Now I refer to refer that with you with witness that I promised to get married
with no other man in the same country than him and I don't intend to get married
in another land."

À propos of nothing much, my local Old Norse group, which
meets only once a month (usually with a break in the summer)
but has different people taking different passages,
celebrated its 25th anniversary this month. The group has
fluctuated quite a bit in size over the years, but we
currently number about eight, four of whom have been there
from the beginning or within a few months thereof.

That last bit really is a bit of a bear. I finally decided
that <skal> is impersonal, so that <ef það skal nokkuð
vinna> is 'if that is at all to be done'. In some contexts
<til> has senses awfully close to 'of, concerning', and
something close to that would fit here to make it 'if that
is at all to be done that would be of hardiness', i.e., if
something requiring hardiness is to be done.
