We maybe talking apples and oranges here, I don't know,
this so very confusing and frustrating,

I took the very first example from the help file on
clip programming, which is:

^!ActivateApp

I type in that line and double clip on it and nothing
happens. I highlight it and hit enter and it disappears.

Isn't this support to start up another version of NoteTab?

Can someone give me a very basic example of line of code
and how to activate it??? I have been looking through the
help for hours and have figured out nothing. A basic
tutorial would help very much. All the documentation in
the world does not help if it does not help someone get
started.

Hi Paul,

You need to sign up for the NoteTab Clips list (see below to
signup) to learn how to write Clips, ask questions about making
them, etc. This list is not for Clip discussion. I can give you
some pointers now though that stay within the boundaries of this
list which is for the very basic use of NoteTab.

Larry read into what you wanted to do more than me. I answered
what you asked, but you wanted to know something different than
what you asked. :) You want to know how to make a Clip. To find
out what a command or function (parts of a Clip - you posted a
command) does go to Help | Help on Clipbook programming | Index
and type in the command or function or scroll to it.

This link is to detailed help for the Clipbar, but the last four
topics will help you do what you want. (You need to sign up for
the Clips list to discuss it. :)

The following is a download for a Clipbook programming tutorial
designed to walk you through Clip writing. It includes "Getting

different parts of NoteTab that deals with Clipbooks), making a
Clipbook Library, adding Clips, and editing Clips, on to more
difficult Clip writing. Be sure to read the Introduction also.
Open ClipTut.clb and then click on the ClipTut.otl Outline Clip
to open the Outline.

All the contents of the zip files go in NoteTab's Libraries
folder. http://www.notetab.net/zip/cliptut.zip

You can also sign up for the NoteTab Clips List to get answers to
Clip questions, but please do not post there concerning the
tutorial. NoteTab Clips Subscribe & Edit Options:

If you sign up for any of the discussion lists, please do *not*
post questions about Clips and other scripting languages (such as

should be posted on the Clips or Scripts lists. HTML should be
posted on the HTML list and Off Topic discussion takes place on
that list. Easy Thumbnails, Easy Imager, and Album Express list
are for discussion of those programs. The most important thing to
remember is please leave the Basic list for the *very basic* use
of NoteTab. The other lists are a lot more flexible for instance
Clips can be/and are welcomed on the HTML list. Thanks!!!

Jody,

I have signed up for the other group.

You must undstand I did not even know the other group existed and was
not sure how signed up for the primary group. There is so very much
information between Notetab and Yahoo and Groups and most of it
is new to me.

Jody, from you email I assume you are a christain,
it is a small world, so am I. I came to Christ during
Army basic training (a good time) in August of 1969.
I have been growing, and struggling ever since, recently
mostly struggling.

I do like Pro 3:5,6 but also Heb 13:5 "Never leave thee

Take care brother,

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the note! :-) However, we need to keep this list for
the basic use of NoteTab. My signature line was an accident. I
assume my cursor was still in my Signature box field in my mail
program and I used my scroll button and it happened to land on
that one. More than happy to hear you are born again. Please make
anymore correspondence to this to me in private eMail. My eMail

will not start an outrage war on this list. :-)

Sometime before I upgraded to Notetab Free 4.95, I noticed that at
random intervals, the Notetab icon would disappear from the system
tray. If I reopen NoteTab and go to View/Options, the "Icon in
System Tray" box is still checked. If I uncheck it and click OK,
and then reopen Options and click the system tray option again and
click OK, it then reemerges in the system tray. For a while.

I have a 2GHz Athlon, 512MB, XPPro with sp1 and all the latest
upgrades. MS Office 2003, AutoCAD 2004, and a bunch of other
random "stuff" is installed. I'm not sure what other info might be
useful.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

MS Sans Sarif Regular size 8 point. color black.

You can trick NoteTab into showing its original set up by renaming the ini
file to something else while NoteTab is closed and then restarting NoteTab.
It will come up as if you had just installed it with all of the old
default settings. Once you have them written down, you can delete the ini
file and rename the old one back so that your old settings are restored.

XP will hide icons when they are 'inactive' by their (Microsoft's)
standards...

[1] Right-click the taskbar and choose Properties.
[2] In the Task bar and Start Menu properties, 'Hide Inactive Icons' is
probably checked.
[3] Go to 'Customize' and find the NoteTab icon.
[4] Change the 'Hide when Inactive' to 'Always Show' and see if that helps.

Maybe it gets moved into the "hidden" group after a while. If so, clicking
the little < icon at the left of the tray should reveal it.

Here is a special warning. When you rename the ini file back, you must do
one of two things. Either (1) do the renaming from Explorer while NoteTab
is closed and then restart NoteTab or (2) rename the old ini file from
NoteTab BUT place and EXCLAMANATION point in the front of the name and then
close and reopen NoteTab. If you do not use the exclamanation point,
NoteTab will lose your settings when you close and reopen it :-P

I would be sorry for you if you had to restore all of them manually because
of this.

If the problem isn't Brian's suggestion (hide less frequently used tray
icons in XP) its probably worth noting that this problem has been reported
more than once in versions prior to and (I believe including) 4.95 in both
Free and Pro versions on Win9x and WinNT+ (ie 2K and XP both).

AFAIK the only solution is the one you've already been using: resetting the
options in Notetab Options.

Hi,

I appreciate your efforts, Brian and Alec. I have few task bar
icons, so I don't hide them at all. I wish it was that easy a fix.

If this is a reported bug, I guess I'll have to live with it. This
problem is the only thing that has proved to be a problem with an
otherwise stellar product.

Thanks again, guys.

The only icons I use on the Toolbar setting are for FONT and Larger
or Smaller Fonts.

So I thought, how nifty to set up Shortcut keys for this and
eliminate another line on my monitor?

Should be simple, yes?

Would be nice to put the icons on the empty space on the very top
line but that's not possible, where File to Help is, after the Help
menu item.

Looked into Shortcut.Dat which had shortcuts, but they are supposed
to work?

I guess I need to find the big Help file that I saw mentioned which
goes into these details? When I use the Online Help, it does not have
a setting for "Font" which surprised me.

Thanks.

That you cannot do. I think in v5 we'll have movable Toolbars.
We do not have an estimated time of release for v5, but it is
being worked on. It will take quite awhile to complete though.
The program is being rewritten from scratch.

>Looked into Shortcut.Dat which had shortcuts, but they are
>supposed to work?

Of course they're suppose to. <g>

You first add the shortcut keys you want to use. Check them out
first to see if they are being used. You can open a few documents
first since some shortcuts require that to be used. Sort of like
if no text is edit the Ctrl+S shortcut is not available to Save.
Also reference "keyboard shortcuts" in Help.

So, the shortcut you would like to use first, then a space, and
then the menu items separated with a forward slash. There is a
rule when encountering and ellipse (...). Reference Shortcuts.dat
for that and for quoting some items.

So, put these in Shortcuts.dat. As soon as you save the file,
Alt+Z will increase the font size and Alt+Shift+Z decreases.

Alt+Z Document/Font/Increase Size
Alt+Shift+Z Document/Font/Decrease Size

If you use an existing shortcut it will be used to do what you
want and be disabled for its default purpose. All the shortcuts
that you make will appear next to the corresponding menu item.
(Slick, eh?;)

Note: If you change an existing shortcut to something else,
simply removing the change will not set the existing shortcut
back. You must re-map the shortcut yourself like if you used
"Alt+C File/Save," you need to use "Ctrl+S File/Save" to revert
back. Once the command is used once it may be removed from
Shortcuts.dat (I would only remove the default shortcuts like if
you reverted back to "File/Save Ctrl+S.")

This is from Shortcuts.dat in Help...

Changing Keyboard Shortcuts
You can now change the default keyboard shortcuts for menu items
by creating a definition file called Shortcuts.dat in the NoteTab
program folder. Place one shortcut reassignment per line. Start
the line with the shortcut value, followed by a space, followed by
the menu item. The first menu name in the sequence is the one that
appears at the top of the main menu, followed by submenu names (if
any), and then the name of the final menu item to activate. You
must separate submenu items with a forward slash and leave out any
ellipsis. You should put double quotes around a menu name if it
contains one or more forward slash characters. The case of
characters does not have to be the same as the actual menu
commands. You can comment out shortcuts by putting a semicolon at
the start of the line. Note that this feature is not available in
NoteTab Light.

Contents example for the Shortcuts.dat file:

;This line starts with a semicolon and is ignored by NoteTab
Ctrl+Shift+F Document/Font/Change Font
Ctrl+T Document/"Insert Date/Time"

>I guess I need to find the big Help file that I saw mentioned

I know not of what Help file you speak of. Use the Search tab in
Help and search for font.

That's what I thought but my system has a life of its own.
For example, I put in CONTROL T, and up pops another
text file editor, UltraEdit. I don't know why? Did I specify
another editor in NoteTab at one time?

Very slick, but not yet, maybe tomorrow on mine :)
Something is blocking the keyboard shortcuts apparently.
Well blocking my specifying in NoteTab. I do have
some shortcuts but not sure where and why.

Ctrl + T bring up another editor, go figure.
Brings up UltraEdit, sometimes it brings up
yet another editor, PFE, an oldie but goodie.

Really, can't figure out why it does this.
Must be triggering a search for an internal
editor, but why it switches between 2 internal
or infernal editors, beats me, ouch!

That was my point. There is not any "font" in the Help files.
Really. Try it and find the word "font" anywhere in the Help
files. It does not exist. You think I am kidding, I bet.

I have had this problem on my system before and it was caused by a freeware
utility that I have called "Hotkeys" which was already set for a shortcut I
wanted to use. I went into "Hotkeys" and disabled that key and then
NoteTab worked fine with it.

Why do you need another shortcut to insert the date and time? There is
already a shortcut for this. When you drop down the menu, you will see
beside "Insert Date/Time" on the menu F5. That means you press F5 to
insert the date and time into your document.

If you go to the menu bar and select View/Options and then select the
"Tools" tab, you will see an item labled "Custom Launch". You probably
have set up your UltraEdit in that box. If so, Ctrl+T will launch it.

You can find the word font all over the help files. To do so go to the
menu bar and select Help/Help Topics. Then on the upper left side you will
see a series of tabs. Select the on labeled search and enter the word
"font" where it says to "Type in the word to search for". Now click on the
button labeled "List Topics". When the list of topics appears, select on
of them and click on the button that is labeled "Display". Now you wil see
that document on the right side and when you scroll through it you will see
that every occcurrence of the word "font" is highlighted for you.

In practical terms, I go through all of the menus and look for the one that
changes fonts which is under the document menu item. Then I go to the help
file and look down the left side to "Reference Information" and open that
one and look for "Menu Commands" and open that one and then look for
"Documents Menu" and click on that one which displays it on the right side.
Then I scroll down until I find:

Font
Change the current document font, or increase/decrease its size. Using
these commands turns off the "Default Properties" setting.

Which is not a lot but better than nothing.

I don't have any resident programs that do this. If they do,
they are not showing up in the task manager's list. The
CONTROL - ALT - DELETE thingee.

It's not a question of "need" - it's a question of getting
the shortcuts to work as they should. The F5 does work!!
The shortcuts in Shortcuts.DAT do not work!?!

I also noticed that the file Shortcuts.DAT is being
arbitrarily changed in its extention to .TXT
and other things, so obviously there are some
shenannigans? going on.

Actually, Custom Launch is empty. So it's all a mystery so far.
Especially since TWO editors come up, not at the same time,
but I get either PFE or UltraEdit, taking turns!!!

Thanks, it's a workable hint but very unwieldy. A listing for
FONT in the main help file or Searchable would be something
to consider. I figured it was left out by accident and
because there is not much to be said about it. If someone
needs help doing a Font, maybe they should not be using
a text editor - that sort of thing.

When I get up the energy, I'll probably re-install everything
and see if that helps out matters. I suspect something is
going on in my rig that is hard to duplicate on others, hence
it may not be possible to address my problems - weird :(

Thanks for the replies, Larry and Jody.

I can tell you that this is why the shortcut is not working! Shortcuts.dat
MUST have that exact file name or it will not work period. How are you
saving this file? There is a file Shortcuts.dat that is place in tthe
folder when you install NoteTab. All you have to do is open the file, edit
it and click the save button to resave it. Then close NoteTab and restart
it again and your shorcuts should work.

Try closing NoteTab and using Windows Explorer to rename Shortcuts.txt to
Shortcuts.dat and then restart NoteTab and see if that does the trick.

If you save a file using the Save As option and you leave off the
extension, NoteTab will save the file with a .txt extension. I have also
had problems on occasion when NoteTab has added the .txt extension to a
file that I saved with the correct extension. In that case, I would get
Shortcuts.dat.txt which, again, would cause the feature to fail. I would
see the name on the document tab and I would just click the right mouse
button on the tab and select "Rename" and then rename it to the correct
extension and close it.

HELP FILE AGAIN:

There is one more simple thing that you can do. When you see a menu item
or a page on the options settings just press F1. This brings up the
context sensitive help for that item and is much faster to get to it than
the way I said in my last post to you.
