Dear BK:
In PRO I got :

<!-- Approved Jul 19, 2005 at 13:15 by Mike Hopkins -->

using the F5 key after I entered the following string in the
VIEW >> OPTIONS >> TOOLS >> Date Filter":

"<!-- Approved" MMM dd, yyyy "at" HH:mm "by Mike Hopkins -->"

A little experimentation showed that the quotes are necessary.
I didn't try to see if there is a limit to the length of a message.
Check the help files for the format of date/time.
Neat. Good question!!

In later fiddling around I was able to get messages of 79
characters, total, and without any date or time strings.

Hmmm...wonder what I can use that for?

It can easily be done with a simple clip also if you wish. Of course
for that answer you would need to ask over there.

Thanks Mike,

that did the trick.

I "KNEW" NoteTab could do it!

Life is good ... my headache is gone ...

it's funny how such a little thing can aggravate you so much.

Using "search disk" to find information in security files containing
backup-information created by a backup software which works very good.
But I miss an export feature to export the search results to a
spreadsheet or a file.
I want to select specific files from several hundreds of files so I
can sort the result in my own way, lets say in Barcode order or date.
Anyone know how to do this ?
Thanxs in advance

Hi Mats,

This is certainly something that can be done. There are clips for
working with delimited data. You can then sort right in notetab, or use
another program like a spreadsheet program (or my personal favorite for
such things csv ed, a free program as well). If you want to have more
on this, the clips list is probably the place to go as it is beyond the
basic notetab topic discussed here.

Notetab associated icons. I surfed over to the Notetab folder to no avail
and the default windows directory
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shell32.dll
didn't contain any icons.

I didn'thave this prolem when I installed Notetab Std on my laptop so
perhaps this is a function of the freeware program?

So where do i find the missing icons.

They are embedded in the exe file. Select NotePro.exe with the browse
thingie in Change Icon in Folder Options.

Although Std/Light has some features that Pro doesn't, the icons
aren't one of them. Non on the versions will let you change the
program executable NotePro|Tab.exe, but you can change it for the
Titlebar (Program Icon in the upper left and the Taskbar. After
making a shortcut, you can right click over it and click on
Properties | Shortcut | [Change Icon...] and they don't show
right away, you'll have to browse the *.exe file for your version
of NoteTab. In the program group icon from the Start | Programs
menu, you do the same as above, right click over it and click on
Properties, and so on.

For those that are new to computers you can open Windows Explorer
in the Folders view (under the View menu) (or My Computer) and
browse to your NoteTab folder. Click on it so you see its files
and then right click over NotePro.exe or NoteTab.exe and then
Copy. Right click on your desktop or in a files area of Windows
Explorer (or My Computer) and choose Paste Shortcut. Read the
paragraph above to see how to change the icon. (You do the same
thing on your Quick Launch bar in XP after you drag/drop a EXE
file there or have a program install it's shortcut there during
installation. Further discussion of shortcuts, etc, needs to go
to the Off Topic list or private eMail please. TIA

I don't have STANDARD so I can't say for sure that this will work for you sure
but in LIGHT and PRO if you hold down CTRL and double click the URL it'll open
in your default browser.

Hi Daniel:
Per the comparison chart you can't get the URL-links underlined, that's only
available in Pro, but this works in Lite (just tested it):

Set Tools-QuickLinks to ON, then double-click in a URL and it will launch
automatically without having to to select, right-click,click OpenLink.

Presumably the same thing also works in Std.

Hi =?WINDOWS-1252?Q?Jacques_Turb=E9?=,

If it is still happening, try switching Clipbook Libraries. You
may have an auto-correct Library open and somehow it is
conflicting. You may have edited the Shortcuts.dat also. It is in
NoteTab's main folder. Open it up can see if you have anything in
it that may be causing it.

I've just installed Notetab Std to replace NT Lite and found that I've not
been able to change the file associations to associate NT Std with TXT
files. I'm running Windoze XP pro.

I first tried to change the file association thru the help menu, eg:
  <Help | Replace MS Notepad >

When that didn't work I tried using Windows Explorer:

<Folder Options | File types | Txt Text Document | Change>

In the resulting <Open With> dialogue-box I noted that the Notetab Std
file was absent from the list . I therefore clicked the <Browse> button and
surfed to the <Notetab.exe> file. However, upon selecting that file and
returning to the <Open With> dialogue-box I discovered to my dismay that
Notetab still failed to appear in the list of programs!!!

Very weird. Now in all other respects, the program functions normally with
no indication of distress.
I just can't figure out how to get it into the <Open With> dialogue box
list. I should also note that I didn't encounter this problem while
previously using NT Lite.

Any ideas as to what gremlin is causing this problem?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA

I have again witnessed a very surprising turn of events with NoteTab,
so to speak. All of the non-7-bit-ASCII characters in one of my files
have been replaced by the correspondng HTML escape-codes.

For example:
Is mise Bruce, ag lorg ùlla ar crann eidhneán.

now appears as
Is mise Bruce, ag lorg úlla ar crann eidhneán.

ú replaced by ú
á replaced by á

I have seen this before. Has no one else had that experience? Is
there
an easy way to reverse this change?

(If the characters are not left 'as is' in this e-mail, this message

Hi Bruce,

Well, that sentence is pretty much unintelligible to me anyway :) but
what you describe will happen if you press Shift+Ctrl+H or if you select
"Characters to HTML" from the "Modify" menu. At least, it will in
NoteTab Pro.

I don't know of an easy way to reverse the change but I suppose someone
could write a clip . . .

Thanks Jody,

I found the culprit : Instant Text from Textware Solutions I recently
installed. Excellent word completing software, but which "ignores"
NoteTab among opened apps to which you can link :(

Hi Bruce,

If you do not have some utility running that would change the
extended characters to their HTML code, and not autocorrect
Library that would do it, or in your Default.udt under the
[AutoCorrect] section at the bottom, then the only thing I can
think of is the Modify | Document to HTML is somehow just
converting those characters. If text is selected with them in it
and you run the aforementioned feature, it will be converted like
it is (unless you use the "No character conversion" item. I
suppose it is also possible that you had the file loaded in
another HTML editor and it changed it on shut down, a feature of
it maybe. If you have the text selected and press Alt+X it will
convert also; perhaps you are hitting it meaning to use a
shortcut like Ctrl+X by accident when the text is selected.
Anyway, check around in those areas mentioned and you might find
where it is coming from.

Hi Wndy,

I would go back into Folder Options and use the Restore (I think
that is what they say) that should set it back to the original
Windows default, Notepad most likely. Then, in NoteTab use View |
Options | Associations and add txt there. NoteTab should
correctly update your Windows associations with all the print,
printo, shell, etc. and make a backup so if you uninstall or
remove the file association under normal circumstances, it will
revert to the Windows backup make, txt associated with Notepad
most likely. The following is more information on associating
with NoteTab. Ignore the part about the attached file. You'll
have to write me in private eMail about it.

- Using/Testing a New Clipbook Library to toggle Notepad on/off.
- Discussion of Why You Want to use Replace MS Notepad
- XP SP2 Microsoft Windows File Protection (WFP) Warnings
- Associate txt files via Options | Associations
- Making IE Use NoteTab via the Utilities Library
- Manual Replacement/NoteTab Discussion Mailing Lists
- XP SP2 Notepad Locations, Order to Delete Them

- Using/Testing a New Clipbook Library to toggle Notepad on/off.

I'm currently (still off/on) working on a Clip that will toggle
Notepad/NoteTab on/off. If you want to try it out and give me
some feedback, the Library is attached and should be extracted to
NoteTab's Library folder. Read the Information Clip on top for
instructions. A few dozen have used it with success and no
problems. I suggest that you only try it if you are very familiar
with Windows Explorer in case something does glitch and you need
to manually correct it. That is easy and I do have Clips in the
Library to backup and to restore to Windows default.

- Discussion of Why You Want to use Replace MS Notepad

Normally, the only reason why you would want Replace/Restore MS
Notepad working is for the quick toggle (besides the easy
convenience.) I say that because you can achieve it all another
way by way of file association and if you want NoteTab to be your
default editor for View Source in IE then you use the Clip in the
Utilities Library.

- XP SP2 Microsoft Windows File Protection (WFP) Warnings

The short way to do what you want, but it will not reverse with
Restore MS Notepad, is click on Replace MS Notepad. When you get
the warning click on Cancel and then you will get another message
from Windows. Click Yes in it. If you do that, the only way to
restore Notepad is manually. (That is only for users that get
those messages.)

- Associate txt files via Options | Associations

Instead, you can go into NoteTab's Options and click on the
Associations tab. type in txt and then click on the Add button.
Do that for as many file types that you want to open in NoteTab.

- Making IE Use NoteTab via the Utilities Library

If you want some shortcuts in Windows Explorer and use NoteTab
for Edit in IE, then go to the Utilities Library and under the
NoteTab Shortcuts section click on those Clips. They do the
following:

Add SendTo Shortcut
Add to Edit HTML file type
Add IE Default HTML Editor
Restore IE Default HTML Editor

If you do the file associations and the Clips the only time that
Notepad will open should be when a programmer forces you to use
it like in a readme file when they use a path to notepad.exe.

- Manual Replacement/NoteTab Discussion Mailing Lists

You can manually delete files in Windows Explorer (or My
Computer) but that is more of a topic for the NoteTab Off Topic
discussion mailing list. It is also very tricky/difficult to do
at times. Any discussion about this should be done on the Clips
List or Off Topic List. Please do not post on the Basic List
about it. (The manual method is discussed briefly below and should
only be used by experienced computer users.

------------ Discussion mailing lists at YahooGroups ------------

You may sign up for the different discussion mailing lists from
either of the links below. We use YahooGroups for the lists.
_Please_ read the following if you decide to sign up!

If you sign up for any of the discussion lists, please *_do not_*
post questions about NoteTab *Clips* and other scripting languages
(such as *RegExp*, PERL, etc.) on the NoteTab Basic list. Use the
Clips or Scripts list for them.

More difficult tasks should be posted on the Clips or Scripts
lists. HTML should be posted on the ntb-HTML list and off topic
discussion takes place on the ntb-OffTopic list. The MailBag
Assistant, Easy Thumbnails, Easy Imager, and Album Express lists
are for discussion of those programs.

The most important thing to remember is please leave the NoteTab
Basic list for the *_very basic_* use of NoteTab. The other lists
are a lot more flexible, for instance: Clips and RegExp can be
used and are welcomed on the HTML list. Thanks!!!

- XP SP2 Notepad Locations, Order to Rename/Delete Them

You can try renaming the Notepad.exe file, but you have to be fast,
less the WFP system restores the file. I've found that renaming it
does not always work on some machines. This method also requires
that a copy of Notepad.stb found in NoteTab's main folder be put in
the System32 folder and a NOTEPAD.INI file be used in the same
folder, see below. (You might need to put them in other folders as
well.)

..\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\Notepad.exe
..\Windows\System32\dllcache\Notepad.exe
..\Windows\System32\Notepad.exe
..\Windows\Notepad.exe (You may not have to delete this one.)

There might be a Notepad.ini already made by NoteTab in the System32
or Windows folder. If not, make a file in NoteTab by that name and
add the text below for its contents with your path to NoteTab's
executable. NotePro is shown. It is NoteTab.exe for Std/Light.

[Application]
ExeName="F:\NoteTab Pro\NotePro.exe"

Hello,
Brief question I'm sure you might have heard before,
In context of migrating NTPro to a new installation of Operating System
(same one in this case, win 2K),
how does one copy settings, to preserve choices of clip libraries,
toolbar, etc.?
     Thanks, Pete

Is there any way to get Notetab Pro to auto check spell as you type?
I know about the auto correct feature which checks for common mis-
spellings in it's table and corrects those on the fly. But I'd like
spell check to work real time as I enter text and change the color or
highlight words not in the main dictionary.

Thanks
/Roger

Hello,
Moved most of my settings. Wonder how to translate clipbook/clipbar
& favorites
settings as well? I'm guessing it's as simple as copying over the
(clipbook name).clb & (cliptab name).ctb settings you want, maybe whole
folder? Same w/ favorites settings/ folder?
                            Thanks, Pete

Hi Roger,

NoteTab is still using v2 of the Addictive Spell-checker. It does
not have auto check while you type. V3 of the dictionary has it.
When we ever get a break to upgrade NoteTab Eric Fookes, the
owner and programmer of Fookes Software, might upgrade to v3
which does have the feature.

I don't want to give a guestimated upgrade date, because I doubt
we will meet it on time. We will definitely do it though. NoteTab
if far from being a dead program, although it has not been
upgraded for quite awhile.

You can check out what I wrote in my online FAQ, but it won't be
meet for sure, so I need to upgrade that again and just not put a
time guess of release at all in it.

A message says that a particular file "has not been fully loaded. It
probably contains one or more null characters. Use the option 'Filter
Binary Codes' if you want to load the entire file next time."
Having done this (checked the "filter binary codes" option), some of
the files remain gibberish--unreadable. Since I do want to use this
notetab software, inasmuch as it is reported to be so good, why
doesn't it function well for me?

Documets formatted in a word processor will create the kind of problems
you're describing. NoteTab is a text editor. Just make sure that the
file you are trying to open is in text format and you'll be OK.
