Hi,
I think what you want is listed under Tab-stop settings in the Help menu:
/***** Menu quote starts here: *****
Tab Size/: Text Tab size. You can set multiple tab sizes in NoteTab Std
by separating each value with a semi-colon (;). Values must be ordered
in increasing sizes and represent the distance from the left margin.

/Tab Units/ (only available in NoteTab Light/Std): Defines units used
for tab size.

/Type Tab/ (only available in NoteTab Pro): You can change the behavior
of the editor by changing this option. If the tab type is set to Real,
pressing <Tab> inserts a "real" tab character into the document. If the
tab type is set to Fixed, pressing <Tab> inserts enough spaces to move
the cursor to the next tab stop. (This is called "fixed tabs" because
the position of existing text will not change if the tab size is later
changed, as it does if real tabs are used.) If the tab type is set to
Smart, spaces are also inserted into the document, but the positions of
the tab stops are a function of the positions of the words in the
previous line.
/***** Menu quote ends here: *****/

As you see there, the Default settings for tab-stops and are set or
changed by going to the main menu and clicking View>Options>Documents.
These values will apply to all new documents and to any old documents
that don't have their own specific settings.

To set specific values which apply to a particular document that is open
in NoteTab, go to the main menu and click on Document>Properties.

In either of these case you enter a number or a series of numbers into
Tab Size. I use Pro and can only enter one number, e.g. "5" -- the
distance between consecutive tab-stop points. In Std/Light you can list
a series of regular or irregular tab-stop points, e.g. "5; 10; 15; 20;
25; 30" or "5; 10; 17; 21; 50", and you can also (via Tab Units) specify
whether these represent character-widths or any of several other
measures of distance from the left margin.

I hope this is what you were looking for. If not let us know!

Are there any clip libraries for special character scripts like
Greek, Hebrew, decent designed fractions etc, etc.? I use NoteTab
Pro for coding up texts for Wikipedia and Wikisource, particularly
on Wikisource I need code up the specials by hand, which means
looking them up and typing them in, which is time consuming.
Many thanks

Do you mean the actual characters or HTML entities? I think there are few
of both kinds at the clip repository.
http://notetab.com/libraries.php

If they don't cover your needs you could just add the characters to your
own library as you look them up.

Subject: "Cursor leaping" problem

This MUST be a problem with my computer, because I've been using
Notetab Standard since '98 or '99 and never experienced this until
the last few weeks.

I'll be typing along (quckly, I type about 120 to 150 wpm) atop a
long document. Suddenly the cursor will jump down a few lines and if
the line is blank, will pretend to type blank letters. If the line
has type, will start erasing the letters for each keystroke I make.

I cannot get the cursor to return to the location where I was
typing. It wants to return to an early tab on that line.

Very weird, very frustrating. (Because I do type really fast and
don't necessarily discover the problem until I've wiped out a line
or two (from it erasing).

Any ideas?

I uninstalled and reinstalled two days ago and thought that had
solved the problem. But then it just happened again.

Does seem to happen only when I'm typing atop long documents.

Advice?

Thanks,
kwc

Forgot to mention that if I save and close Notetab and then re-open,
all is well. I can put the cursor where I want to in the document and
continue typing.

1. Make sure you are in "insert" and not "overstrike" mode.
2. Most likely the problem is in your keyboard. Check for any sticky
keys. Try another keyboard if you can. Keyboards are cheap nowadays.
3. Check to see if the problem occurs in any other editor besides
NoteTab, even if you have to test in (gasp!) Notepad.

Hi Ken,

You should pick this up over on the Off Topic list, please, since
it probably is your computer and not for discussion of the basics
of NoteTab. ;) See footer...

I'd try to see if anything is trying to steal the focus and then
replace your riched32.dll found in System32 (or System in 95/98,
and maybe ME).

Try reinstalling your riched32.dll from your Windows Setup CD. I
do not know what CAB it is in, but my guess would be in the
PRECOPY files. I do not know where to find it at MS either. It is
the chief cause of text not being displayed in the edit window and
strange things happening.

Lee,

One option I use in these circumstances is to arrange the clips so
that the one you want to summon with a shortcut is near the top of the
library, or the only one in the library that begins with a certain
letter, say, in your case "p". Then summon the clip in context with
the Esc command. So "Esc P" is going to summon your clip, then you
just press enter and it runs.

Other people I know use numbers. If the clip name starts with "1"
then, "Esc 1" will summon it.

That's the only way I know to keep your hands on the keyboard when
running clips, other than the cumbersome "Shft-F4" and then scroll to
the clip you want, or start typing its name.

Another method you can use, so long as you have the clipbook displayed
and your clip selected, is to hit CTRL+SPACE, which will run the
selected clip. Great for repeatedly running the same clip.

#18229 From: "Mike Brown" <brownstudy@...>

Subject: Using NT for Nanowrimo
me_brown
Send Email Send Email

Hi all. Just curious if anyone had used Notetab Pro for the Nat'l
Novel-writing competition (http://nanowrimo.org). I used a shareware
program called Journal last year, but I'm on a new PC now and want to
leverage fewer apps to do more things.

If you're not familiar with nanowrimo, the goal is to write a 50,000
word novel from scratch during November. You have to average about
1,660 words/day to stay on track.

So my goals are to be able to easily track my daily word count and
then, at the end, have a text file to upload to the nanowrimo robot.
It automatically counts the number of words in the file and determines
if you're winner. (The goal is to write and finish a new novel, not to
write a *good* novel :)

Here's how I'm thinking of approaching it:

1. Open a new outline file.
2. Give each heading a date. Or just Day01, Day02, etc.
3. Use the word count feature to make sure I hit the quota for the
day. (Maybe save the counts to a different heading so I can have a
running total?)
4. At the end of the month, export to a DOS text file, do a final word
count to make sure I'm comfortably over 50,000 words.

I think the headings are exported with the text, yes? That may be a
problem as it may artificially inflate the word count. (But perhaps
not more artificial than taking two pages to describe a bathroom, or
something. Nanowrimo'ers are shameless in their ploys to boost their
word count on uninspired days.)

Any ideas on improving this process are appreciated!

The image file cannot be found by the Web server. Either you have
uploaded the file to the wrong location, haven't specified the path
correctly, or haven't set the file permissions correctly. Try (i)
including the full path from document root when specifying the file
(ii) if appropriate, chmod 755 filename.jpg (or use the FTP client)
(iii) make sure the file was uploaded in binary format.

Or more than likely filename.jpg isn't same as filename.JPG
A lot of image programs put the jpg in caps, which some browser don't read as
jpg.

Also, check that the jpg extension is not JPG. This is a common cause of this

When you upload the HTML code for a page and an image to a server, you may have
to change the path to your image (in the IMG SRC tag), so that the
HTML-interpreter can find it.

You might right-click on the red cross and then on 'properties'. You should then
see where the HTML-interpreter is looking for the image, and with what spelling.

I agree. Having an actual example url will help us solve this problem
for you.

I have used Notetab for a while, and then my puter crashed. After
reinstalling Windows, and Notetab, I find that double-clicking on a
url within the body of the text no longer opens the url in my browser.

I set the Internet options for Notetab to my primary and secondary
browser, twice, and I don't know how to set anything else to get this
feature working again.

Cheers!

Check "Quick Open Links" on the Tools menu. Alternatively, hold down the
Ctrl key when you double click.

Mike,

NoteTab is great for writing novels or anything else. Personally I
would use the headings for organizing your ideas, not for keeping rack
of the date.

If you want to date the material or track its size, do it at the
beginning or end of each section with a clip using ^$GetDate$ and
^$GetSelSize$.

If it's important to you to keep track of the count by the day, I'll
bet one of these wizards who frequent this list could point you
towards a clip that would keep a running doc tally and a daily tally.
I used to have one of those in MS Word back before I discovered
NoteTab and its tabbed documents feature. Now I use Word only when I
am preparing a doc for submission. Creation, research, and file
management all takes place in Notetab.

Upgrade to Pro if you haven't already, and then learn clip
programming. You won't regret it.

Good luck,

rpd

Thanks for the advice, RP. I do have NTPro, but have never cracked the clip
programming; it looks kinda straightforward but I've never had a need to
learn it as my needs up to this point have been minimal.

My idea of breaking out the entries by day was so that I could quickly
determine the daily word count and ensure I was on track. I may still do
that. I may make time next weekend to mess about with clips.

Yep, but it seems a waste of such a good structural tool (outline
headings) on a relatively minor task of counting words. Let's see if
somebody can make a clip for you that you can run at the start and end
of each day's work that will go to the end of your outline document,
insert the date, time, and wordcount, and then subtract the previous
entry for the day's wordcount.

I may try it myself later in the week.

Mike, if you want to experiment with a clip. Play with this one.

It goes to the end of your doc and inserts the date, time and
wordcount. If you have any trouble or want something more elaborate,
move over to the Clips group and one of those wizards could probably
even make one that would get you a running daily count.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ntb-Clips/

Open the clipbook (F4) then add your own clip with a header like, say,
"Insert Date & Word Count" then paste this code in. The ";" are just
comments. Watch out for word wrap. Each line below should start with
either a ; or a ^!

Good luck.

rpd

; Jumps to the end of any kind of doc, even an outline.
^!Jump DOC_END
; Add a spacer.
^!Keyboard ENTER
; This issues the keyboard commands to open Text Statistics (under Tools)
; and then tab to get the word count, and copy to clipboard.
^!Keyboard ALT+T S TAB TAB TAB CTRL+C ESC
; This function gets the date and puts it at the end of your doc.
^$GetDate("c")$
; Tab over one slot.
^!Keyboard TAB
; Now paste in the wordcount.
^!Paste

There is a way without clip if you don't want to.

Have one file chronological (my main NTB file is a weekly otl, that
logs anything, as it is my default pasteboard). You can even have a
pasteboard divider wiyh the date (hm, I manually update it each
morning !)

Then when you write a bit of your book, jot your ideas sequentially.
End of day (or at any review time of your roughs), set a MyBook.otl
file as pasteboard. Then in your roughs you select chunks, and copy
them.

Then in MyBook.otl you reorder as you want, whilst you still have the
chrono in the main log file.

At least, that's how I proceed for a lot of subjects :)

Mike,

I posted 3 wordcount clips in the Clip section. Others will probably
improve them.

Good luck,

Richard -- thanks so much for contributing these macros to the group! I'm
both impressed and humbled. I'll download them this week and give them a
try.

BTW, I visited your site and was impressed all over again. Thanks for taking
the time out of your working schedule to mess around with these clips.
Although, truth be told, I myself often prefer tinkering with Word or
MacroExpress macros to actually writing. The "gee whiz" of a smartly
executed macro or clip always exceeds the "oh no" of what I've spent an hour
having written.

all best -- mike brown

Jacques -- thanks for your contribution. I've followed your posts on the GTD
forums and lists for many years; I even read your message where you
mentioned the trick of using an OTL as a pasteboard, a trick which I used at
my last job.

I'll probably try Richard's clips first, though if I find myself spending
more time tinkering with clips than I do writing the novel, I may have to
fall back to your approach :)

>>Thanks<<

I was due to write them for my own use anyway.

>>The "gee whiz" of a smartly executed macro or clip always exceeds

A common sentiment for me, too. But programming reinforces its own
good writing habits, including precision and terseness, don't you think?

Don't answer, or they'll throw us out of here to off-topics.

I would check the Clips List later in the week. There are real
programmers over there, and one might makes those clips tighter and
more reliable. I'm still a rank amateur at clipping.

Good luck writing.
