Hi everyone,

At last, the first NoteTab Light 5 pre-release is available! Here's a
chance for you to be the amongst the first to test it. You can download
the Setup file from the following link:

http://www.fookes.com/ftp/beta/NoteTab_Setup_5b1.exe

It is recommended that you install NoteTab Light 5.4 in a different
folder from your earlier version. Both versions can co-exist on the same
computer. Please read the recommendations displayed during installation.

NoteTab Pro and Std version 5.4 will be released at the same time as
NoteTab Light 5.4. The following improvements have been added to 5.4:

* Updated the regular expressions engine to the latest release, which is
based on PCRE 7.3. See the following document for a list of improvements:
http://www.pcre.org/changelog.txt

* Added ^$GetParaRow$ and ^$GetParaCol$ Clip functions, which return the
paragraphe row and column index of the cursor in the document.

* Several minor improvements and bug fixes.

* Updated documentation.

Hi,

I just got an iMac and want to know if I can now download and use NoteTab with
this?
Any way to make this happen?

And, yes, I'm techinically challenged, LOL!

Well... NoteTab is for Windows. So, you have to have Windows or some
sort of Windows-like environment for NoteTab to work in. Some possibilities:

- Install Windows in parallel to MacOS -- meaning, you have to choose at
boot if you will work in MacOS or Windows. This pressuposes that your
iMac is Intel-based, that is, reasonably new (made later than February 2006)
- Use Parallels, VMWare or similar to run Windows inside MacOS --
meaning that after loading MacOS, you load a "virtual computer" with
full Windows.
- Install an "emulation layer" like Wine, which "deceives" applications
designed for Windows into working in other operating systems.

None of these options is really aimed to the beginner. The first two
also need a full working copy of Windows, which usually involves
purchasing a Windows license. Also, the two first options involve, well,
working in Windows. Which goes against the whole point of purchasing a
Mac, I suppose.

The third option is what I would do -- no additional software to be
purchased (Wine is free), and you work inside MacOS (mostly). But it's
*not* for the faint of heart: even if installation of Wine itself is
straightforward (I'm not saying it is -- I never attempted installing it
on a Mac, but I suppose there must be easy-install packages somewhere on
the Web), setting up individual applications to run in Wine can be
fiddly. And you will not have the same level of desktop integration you
can get with a designed-for-Mac app.

Bottom line? It's technically possible, sure. But not *easy*. And you
will probably better off with a Mac-specific text editor.

Subject: Stripping HTML tags
rvta_richland

I have discovered a serious bug (I hope it is not a feature) in Note
Tab. As most know, HTML rendering engines compress a series of spaces
to a single space unless the coder specifies a   (which is
decimal 160, or 0xA0 in hex). This is done to "trick" the engine into
displaying an unprintable character whenever it encounters one.

The bug is: when stripping HTML tags (Modify > Strip HTML Tags >
Remove All Tags -- shift+control+T) it does not restore a "real" space
(0x20, dec 32); rather, it preserves the "faux space; i.e., 0xA0.
This causes Modify > Spaces not to work at all. Which causes me to
use very bad language. It was not until recently that I looked at a
problem document in a hex editor and realized what had happened.

It is not practical to have to do a global replace on a character you
cannot see -- how, pray tell, can you be certain that the character
you have selected is indeed the one you wish replaced? -- and having
to write a clip seems to me to be even more infuriating.

So, what I would like to see is for Note Tab to convert   to the
intended 0x20 space; or, at least to provide the option to select from
0x20 or 0xA0. The Options > HTML tab would be as good a place as any
to provide a checkbox to control this behavior.

Hi everyone,

We're pleased to announce the release of NoteTab 5.4, which includes
NoteTab Light!

You will find the upgrade information through NoteTab's "Check for
Updates" feature, which is available from the Help menu. If you don't
see the version 5.4 info in the News and Updates window, make sure you
click on the "Get headlines" button at the top-left of the dialog box to
refresh the list.

Improvements since previous update:
-----------------------------------

* NoteTab Light now available as a version 5 release.

* Updated the regular expressions engine to the latest release, which is
based on PCRE 7.3. See the following document for a list of improvements:
http://www.pcre.org/changelog.txt

* Added several new Clip syntax elements:

^!IfEmpty "Value" GoToLabelTrue [ELSE GoToLabelFalse]
If Value represents an empty variable or string, then jumps to specified
label name. It is recommended to enclose Value between double quotes.

^$GetParaCol$
Returns cursor column position within paragraph in current document.

^$GetParaRow$
Returns paragraph row index of cursor in current document.

^$GetUserRegRoot$
If you are running an non-NT version of Windows (Win95/98/ME), this
function returns a value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, otherwise it returns
HKEY_CURRENT_USER. This function can be useful to ensure compatibility
with certain registry operations under different versions of Windows.
See usage examples under the "NoteTab Shortcuts" section of the
Utilities library.

^$GetWinPlatform$
Returns the Windows platform type under which NoteTab is running.
Possible values are one of the following: Win32_Win, Win32_NT, Unknown.
If you're running Win95/98/ME the returned value is Win32_Win, and
Win2000/2003/XP/Vista/Longhorn produces Win32_NT. This function is
useful to ensure compatibility with operations that need to run
differently on each Windows platform.

* Several minor improvements and bug fixes.

* Updated documentation.

Richard,

I'm going to have ta spoil your day. You are indeed talking about a
FEATURE of NoteTab. Read on for the explanation, as well as the
solution to having your cake, and eating it too.

Just because you, or anyone else uses the non-breaking-space to
"trick" the browser into unusual behavior, doesn't mean that NoteTab
has a bug in it. The bug is, that YOU are using the nbsp wrong.

If you want to display more than 1 space in a web page, one legit way
is to use the <pre> tag (see below). Rather than "trick" the browser
into anything, the NBSP (non-breaking space) handles the occasional
need to keep two words together, even in situations, where the space
between them would separate them at the end of the line.

In other words, when ___YOU___ insert an NBSP into html text, you are
telling the browser, that you want what comes before the NBSP to stay
together with what comes after.

This has NOTHING to do with NoteTab. When you STRIP html from the doc
(or selected text) you are telling it to convert the HTML nbsp to a
Unicode non-breaking-space. Seems to me a very useful function, to
actually do what you tell it to.

If you want to retain a series of real spaces after stripping htmls,
you'll have to START with real spaces, NOT non-breaking-spaces!

For example:

Display 5 spaces inside quote: <pre>" "</pre>
both in the browser, AND after notetab strips html.

Note, that I'm not counting spaces outside the quotes.
Nor do you really need the quotes (except to point out
where the spaces are.

Cheers,

Eb

It did work for me, both in 5.3 Pro and 4.95 Light.

Are you sure that your v5.3 could connect to the Internet?

This is wonderful news! Only problem is that I'm mostly in Ubuntu
these days and NoteTab doesn't work very well in Wine.

Is there any chance a Linux compatible version of NoteTab will ever be
available? PLEASE consider doing so. I would pay dearly for the
convenience of not having to boot into XP. Thanks.

I never found a good one, at least for html.

And for Mac, many people speaks about the Barebone's editor, but I
can't find my way in this program.

In linux, there is Gedit, a plain editor with html extensions, comes
close to NoteTab (if I remember correct), but I didn't manage to get
it proper working for html.

Bottomline: Please, give us a Mac-version of NoteTab, and Linux
aswell. Please!
And the Mac-market is in an expanding curve anyway :-))

Linux is also expanding on the desktop now that Dell is offering Ubuntu
pre-loaded. Also even the thought Vista is driving many (like me) to
finally make the leap away from Windoze.

Peter,

When you click on on all of this, minimize NoteTab and you might find the
screen you are looking for hidden behind NoteTab. I could not find the update
screen until I minimized NoteTab and there it was waiting for me. It does not
automatically replace NoteTab, it just sits and waits in behind NoteTab until
you clear what is in front of it.

Did you (Peter) verify that you have access to the Internet and that your
firewall allows your version(s) of NoteTab to go there? (Such dialog screens
could also be hidden behind other windows, increasing the chance that you
have accidentally answered "no". Do check your firewall log or rules.)

Thanks everyone. All is well now. Not a firewall problem as far as I
can tell and not a problem with the dialogue box being behind
everything else either, but when I came back to the computer at the
end of the day, and started up NoteTab, the problem was fixed, and I
am now successfully running NoteTab 5.4.

Thanks for the ideas, even if I didn't do anything consciously to
implement them!

Hi,

Yes, use the html toolbar and the use "hyperlink with image". Save as
html file and you can use the links. Is that what you want? Are the
pictures on-line or on your computer? Are you actually trying to have
the picture visible, or have a link in a true text file that you can
follow yourself when you wish to see a picture?

If you are looking towards a webpage, then the question should go to the
html list which I am copying.

haydn1947

I've noticed that if leave the computer idle for some time and come
back later, NoteTab Pro 5.4 sometime has great difficulty writing to a
disk that is probably in "sleep" mode for not having been accessed in a
while. When I try to save to the disk, the status line shows trying to
write the file. The mouse icon goes to busy when passed over the NTP
edit window. It may stay in this condition without ever completing the
save operation. Checking the folder shows that the target file does
not exist (although the backup was created).

I've found that I can get out of this condition by initiating a "save
as" to another file name on the same disk. This seems to be sufficient
to give NTP the interrupt it must have missed. Both saved files are
identically written and NTP continues normally. Very strange little
anomaly! I haven't seen this kind of anomaly with any other Windows
application that would be writing to the disk.

Subject: FTP open document from NoteTab directly to server?

I have NoteTab Pro 5.4 and Windows 98SE.

I edit web site files locally on my PC, in NoteTab Pro. (I have a
complete copy of the web site locally.) When I edit a file, I'd like
to be able to quickly FTP that file up to the web site just by
clicking a command in NoteTab.

I've tried using the FTP Clipbook library that comes with NoteTab,
but it doesn't really do what I want: it requires you to manually
enter the destination directory on the server and manually enter the
list of files to upload.

Here's what I think would be ideal:

1. Right-click on document tab, and execute a command "FTP".
2. Select the destination server from a pre-configured list.
3. Select the destination directory from a pre-configured list.
4. Confirm or "okay" to upload the open file.

Is this possible?

Yes. More or less.

Though I have answered your question, let me volunteer a
bit of additinonal info.

The place to get a solution for what you want is the
clip code discussion group.

Perhaps you can find someone there who has already solved
your problem.

In addition, if you live in the Houston, TX area, there
are occasional workshops in making NoteTab Pro do more
than it was designed for (SE NASA area).

Cheers.

NoteTab Pro 5.4

To reorder document tabs on the Tab Bar, one must right-click the Tab
Bar for the command "Allow Reordering". However, after exiting the next
time NoteTab is launched the setting has again reverted to the default
of off. Thus, if one wants to "Allow Reordering" of document tabs, one
must use that command in every session.

I seem to recall that when I used NoteTab Pro 4.95, I could always
reorder tabs so that the "allow" setting must either have been the
default or the setting must have been persistent.

Was this changed in NoteTab Pro 5.4, or is this an accident?

This is only required, if you use STCKED tabs. If you disable stacked
tabs, you no longer need to "enable" reordering. Just drage document
tabs to wherever you want them (though you may have to do this in
several steps, and scroll the tabs, if there are more than one screen
width).

Whatever you change to will be persistent.

If you insist on stacked tabs, try this in order:

1. UNstack the tabs,
2. Rearrange
3. REStack the tabs.

Note, that you do not need to enable reordering this way.

4. close and reload NoteTab t check the result.

There is also in Jody's Dir_stuff.clb, a tab ordering clip which closes
and reopens all tabs alphabetically.
