Hi everyone

Thought I'd post this question here just in case I've been stupid and
not managed to find the option.
I've been using NoteTab for probably almost 10 years now and it's one
program that is probably kept open all day every day.

But there was a feature I was digging around to try and find.

Is there a way to put an item into the right-click menu either when
right-clicking the tab bar, or in the document body, to open the
document's folder in explorer?

This would be really useful if there was a way!

Thanks
Ben

I don't think so. But you could put a button on the Clipbar, provided
you use a paid version of Notetab.

H="OpenFolder"

No. I think the best it can do is to preserve the encoding in already
existing Unicode files, but if you type some funky characters and
save I think you are BSODed. This isn't totally clear to me, but
Notetab does not support Unicode in the way one usually means. It has
its ways to work around the problem though...

Y'all,

I don't know enough about the various options
available in the browser.dat file, but...

Supose you configure the "Second browser" to open
the Windows Explorer instead?

Then all you would have to do is add "View other browser"
to the pop-up menu.

And if that doesn't work, how about lobbying Eric
for this feature?

But, you can export text from a PDF file (from inside the PDF reader) and
put it into a text file for "off-line" editing if it's the text you need.

So where does it go wrong, what happens?

Are you aware that Notetab doesn't provide an FTP interface per se?
The FTP clips just pass commands to ftp.exe, a DOS utility hidden
somewhere in the Windows folder. I think most of us agree that for
most tasks a more easy to use FTP program is to prefer, but scripting
ftp.exe can be useful for example as as a quick way to download a
specific file you download frequently and similar things.

Eb,

Out of curiosity, I tried this in the browsers.dat file:

[folder]
Command=explorer.exe
Application=Explorer

Using this clip:

^!URL [folder] ^**

The text file opened in Internet Explorer, as I expected.

This is because of how tightly integrated Internet Explorer and
Windows Explorer are. They share a lot of the same code. This is also
one of the reasons crackers can wreak so much havoc on Windows systems.

I tried using a directory, and it did not work.

This is using WinXP Home SP2, IE 7.

What I have is a list of names and addresses in PDF format. If I wanted to add
to or correct any of these, how would I export to, say, NoteTab, make the
change, and put it back in the original list? I assume I would start by calling
the list up in Acrobat Reader. (I don't have the full Adobe Acrobat program.)
Thanks for your help.

One of the "features" of the portable Document format in the early days
of the format was advertised as "copy protection" preventing people from
copying from your PDF documents. Since that time there have been several
PDF capable programs designed by others which enable access to the
contents of a PDF document.

In an age where data must not only be communicated, but manipulated,
this design is a built in flaw. That is why people have tried to work
around it.

In my view, PDFs are a hassle. if you have to exert yourself to be able
to extract from them, it is more like TV than computing.

I am copying this reply to the Off-topic list,
ntb-OffTopic@yahoogroups.com, because it isn't on-topic for the basic
NoteTab list. Please continue there.

Lotta,

NOTHING happens, that is the problem. I am trying to set up an FTP
connection to an existing webpage using login information that is
CONFIRMED correct (it works using other software), but when I enter
it in the appropriate dialog I get no connection, and yet following
the same steps in another HTML editor I have installed works
flawlessly. NoteTab Pro came very highly recommended to me, and I
admittedly am very new at this so may be doing something wrong, but
if I cannot connect to the webpage then the software is of little
value to me.

I'm not very familiar with the FTP clips that come with Notetab, but
as I think they work the clip called "FTP server setup" just collects
your login details and saves them to Notetab's ini files. Once that's
done you have to run the other clips (Download files, Upload
files...) and manually enter the paths to the file on the server and
locally to make something happen.

As I said earlier, if you aren't a command line geek you are much
better off using a graphical FTP program. Notetab is a text editor.
Its scripting capabilities makes it possible to make it interact with
other programs, in this case ftp.exe. I wouldn't want to manage a
site using that though. For certain specialized purposes it's useful
because it's quick. In most cases I like to "see" the files on the
server, get confirmations and so on. I think you are expecting the
kind of FTP integration some HTML editors have. Notetab don't have
this. There won't be a window displaying all the fifes on the server
or drag and drop. If you are anything like me, use full featured FTP
program for FTP and Notetab for editing your pages.

I would be happy to help you, but we will need to discuss it on the
Clips list. I wrote some clips that use ftp.exe for uploading the
current document or multiple text or binary files from selected
folders on the local computer to selected folders on the remote
computers. See FTP_Custom_Ver1.4.zip in the Files area on the clips
list. Mine does uploading only.

Your last comment is strange. NoteTab is primarily a text editor, not
an FTP client. Most users find NoteTab to be highly functional and
really useful, without ever using it for FTP. FTP is kind of an extra
function, added via Clips.

That FTP clip requires Windows FTP.exe. Have you tried running
FTP.exe from a Command window to see if it works for you? If it
doesn't, then the problem is not with NoteTab or the clip.

If you are able to use FTP.exe from a Command window, then I suggest
an alternative to the FTP clip. I suggest that you instead use
Sheri's FTP Custom clip. It is far superior to the basic FTP clip. I
provided some user interface and process requirements, and Sheri did
a great job at producing an excellent clip. Use that instead of the
FTP clip.

But, if the primary reason you want NoteTab is for FTP functionality,
then I think you're using the wrong tool.

Good discussion on this one :-)
For the narrow purpose you describe it might be worth getting OpenOffice
which allows exporting to PDF. (It wouldn't have whatever formatting
etc. the original PDF had and you'd still have to start the process by
Copy-To-Text). Also a number of free "print to PDF" printer drivers are
available. More discussion if desired should be on the Off-Topic list
though. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ntb-OffTopic

Many thanks. But I solved the problem by simply buying a PDF Editor. They were
having a Christmas sale.

No more posts.

What I was describing was indeed essentially one way.

I wouldn't ever use PDF as a way of storing information, so I'd be
extracting the information and putting it somewhere else - Excel, a
database, Word, or a simple text file.

Then when I want to create a new PDF file, I simply use the CutePDF
freeware. This installs as a printer in your PC and allows your to create
PDFs from anything you can print. It's a great little program.

Thanks Dave. It's only this one list that's in PDF format, and I understand what
you're saying about storing data in that format. I've solved the problem, and
since it's off-topic, won't prolong the discussion on this list.

Thanks again.

With a clip.

You can use the "Outline topics to HTML" clip in the default Utilities
library as a template.

Give a hollar on the clips forum if you need more help.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to verify if NoteTab 5.5 still works under Windows 95, but my
old test machine just died on me. Is anyone successfully running the
latest NoteTab version under Win95?

Happy New Year to you all!
