It would help us help you if you are more specific in stating your problem.
In particular, what is the status of the insert/overwrite mode when you
are find you are overwriting. As I have said before, the status line is not
always in synch with the program mode, i.e., the status line might say
insert while Notetab is actually in overwrite mode and vice versa. (You
do have the status bar turned on, right? [View | Status bar checked])

You might also get in the habit of frequently monitoring the status bar
to note any mode changes and what you were doing at the time. It is
up to you to observe and report on the conditions leading up to, and
upon, experiencing your problem. For example, how often does it occur -
after 5 min, 2 hours, totally random? What are you doing - heavy editing,
primarily straight input? Are you using the mouse? Shift keys? Arrow
keys? Do you touch type? Where on/around the keyboard are your hands?
Basically, what is the repeatable pattern that causes the problem?

Good luck, Art

I figured it out. I needed to copy the AutoCorrect.clb file from
the old computer to the new one.

Hmm ...

My cats recognise the different sound that their little gourmet cat food
tins make to the sound of their normal cat food, and just about knock us
over in the rush.

In addition, one of the cats knows when it's shopping day, and carefully
inspects the bags until he finds the ones with the little tins in it, then
sits with them "to keep them safe".

Hi everyone,

Here's an opportunity for you to test the upcoming NoteTab Light 5.7
version. If you would like to try it out, please download the
installation program from the following link:

NoteTab Light v5.7 (Freeware); size 1,779 KB:
http://www.fookes.com/ftp/beta/NoteTab_Setup.exe

New features are described in the WhatsNew.txt file. Please note that
the Clip Help file hasn't been updated with the new commands and functions.

Here's a list of the most significant changes in NoteTab Light:

* NoteTab Light is now protected with a different third-party product,
which should significantly reduce compatibility issues. The resulting
executable is also much smaller than prior versions.

* Fixed several accessibility issues. Added configuration file for
Window-Eyes, JAWS for Windows, and Dolphin Hal; these are stored in the
Accessibility subfolder. Use the following command-line switch to
install them in the appropriate folders:
NoteTab.exe /acc=install

* Improved the Strip HTML Tags feature. Now correctly processes
unordered lists, ordered lists, and definition lists. Also improved
processing speed.

* Improved the /usb switch option. You now only need to use this command
the first time you run NoteTab off a USB drive. NoteTab will store the
option in its INI file on the USB drive. To cancel the option, run
NoteTab with the /usb=false command-line switch.

* Updated the regular expressions engine to the latest release, which is
based on PCRE 7.7.

Hello,

My name is Jim, my challange is to reset Notetab light back to
MS notepad. I've tried the suggestions in the NTL help section and it
didn't reset. I tried to delete the NTL from add remove and that didn't
work.

I would appreciate any assistance to remove NTL as the default notepad.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Long-time user (and lurker on these lists). I've gathered an incredible
amount of good info here!

I've been kicking around whether to present this for discussion, and have
finally grown tired of the work-around. With all of this brain trust
together, mebbe, there's an answer to this!

When the Print dialog is open, the choice to only print the selected text is
"grayed out" -- yes, I have text selected. I believe I remember this being
available in past iterations of NoteTab. I have a mind like a steel trap
(door), and I may be wrong. I can't find a mention in the Help file.

XP Pro SP2 at work, the nasty Vista at home (if I'd only known...)
NoteTab Pro 5.61/fv on both machines.

Please help,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Printing options in notetab have always been a bit limited.

Try getting a copy of text print. There is a library that goes with it.
Here is the info from the clip:

"This library was written by Fookes Software to serve as an interface to
the TxtPrint program. You are free to customize it any way you like!

NoteTab currently does not integrate a print-preview function. However,
you can use the free TxtPrint utility from Örjan Råberg for this task.
It provides print preview and, if you want, lets you print multiple
pages per sheet so you can save a lot of paper. TxtPrint can be
downloaded from the following link:

http://www.notetab.com/ftp/txtprinten10.zip"

In addition to other advantages, it allows print selection.

Don,

FYI - Since version 5.0 NoteTab has had Print Preview, see File >
Print Preview.

The printing functionality is a big improvement over older versions of
NoteTab.

However, for all the bells and whistles, TextPrint is a good solution.

Chuck, the help file has the info under "file menu"

Print
Prints the active document or selected text. Hold down the Shift key when
selecting this command to print only selected text.

:-) I wouldn't know because I always use print view. Perhaps if he has
not, Eric should update his clip. Maybe he has and I just keep
reinstalling it. Frankly it should be a standard distribution with
notetab as far as I'm concerned.

Another way is to do it with a clip. (Clips List for clips questions)

The Clip would get selection, copy to a new doc, and execute the print
command on the new doc.

A couple of ways to do it.

Using KEYBOARD calls:
Copy below this line

Hi Chuck,

It seems as you are getting answers to every possible question except
the one you asked: Why doesn't Notetab allow me to print selected text?

First, thank you fro bring this up. I am not sure if I ever was aware of this
feature but it does seem quite useful. I checked and yes, it is a default
option in the print dialog for NoteTab Std & Pro v4.95. And works quite
nicely. And the same option is displayed in Notetab Std & Pro v5.61,
except, as you say, it is grayed out.

Finding the process to "un-gray" the option was not too difficult. Go to
NoteTab help and search for "Print". Then heck the box at the bottom
of the search dialog panel for "Search previous results" (I wish Google
had that!), enter "select" in the search window and click "List topics"
Choose "File Menu" in the search results and look at "print". There
you will find that we now have to hold down the shift key to "un-gray"
the "Selection" option. Then it works as before.

As to why the change, I don't know. I guess we would have to ask Eric.
It makes no sense to me to add an extra step and roadblock to a nice
feature.

Hope this help.

Thank you everyone for your answers. I knew I could depend on you.
Shift-Print is a viable option (thank you Pat), though it certainly begs the
question, "why?" (thank you Art)! I was looking in the help file to see a
link to further describe the Print Dialog and didn't see the remaining
sentence!

Hi Chuck,

The answer to the "why" question is quite simple. Unlike version 4,
NoteTab 5 uses a third-party print engine which requires getting the
text to print before the Print dialog box or preview window is opened.
As a result, it was necessary to devise a method to determine whether to
send the whole document text or just the selection -- hence the Shift trick.

This method is actually explained in several places, including the
"Using NoteTab FAQ".

past about NoteTab being rebuilt from scratch. This would be evidence of
some of that. The Shift trick, as stated earlier, is just what I was
looking for.

Further, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you profusely for the
effort you've put into making this the piece of software that MUST be first
on my install list with every new PC I've got to use for any extended period
of time! Between home and work, I've been through my share. The ability to
write a clip for just about any given task is a true godsend.

Keep up the good work!
Chuck

Thanks for your nice message, Chuck. I'm glad you appreciate NoteTab so
much. Your first email on this issue has prompted me to add some new
printing Clip commands that will help make it more intuitive to print a
text selection.

Eric, Chuck,

I figured out the clip key combo to 'Preview Selection' but the new clip
commands (proposed), will help a great deal.

It would be nice to have a key sequence to do this. CTRL+P prints but
CTRL+SHIFT+P turns on the PasteBoard.

I have not tried to enable a custom keyboard sequence via the
shortcuts file.

Eric,

While you are in an answering mode, is there a compelling reason you
removed the "Support Files Location" from the Advanced options? The
"/USER=" workaround works - somewhat - but is a real PIA. I operate in
single user mode and had set up a common support directory for NTB
and NTP v4.95 that worked quite nicely. I have many links and apps
calling Notetab on my system and I don't remember where they all are
so every once in a while I will pop back into multiuser mode and lose
my libraries and other stuff. Also, the "/USER=" workaround does not
seem to work for spelling dictionaries.

I like to keep all my Notetab directories near each other and not scattered
across the various application and operating system disks and avoid using
"Docs & Settings" if at all possible. Could you please re-implement the
"Support File Option"?

And while you're at it, it would be REAL NICE if you could implement
an option to redirect the "Favorites" files. It would also be nice to have
a common INI file. I have spent a lot of time tweaking my toolbar and
shortcut menus [very nice features BTW], and have to edit the INI files
every so often to get them back in synch. For those of us that run
multiple versions of Notetab it would make keeping the various support
files in synch much easier.

Thanks for a great program.

Hello,

I'm a "Pro" version user. If someone could help me sort out my sorting
problem I'd appreciate it ;-)

Basically I'm trying to sort a list of names in standard ascending
character order but something strange is happening. Most, but NOT all
off the sorting is processed as anticipated. For example, a name like
"Cat Jones" might sort AFTER a name like "Charles Smith".

Is there some type of user preference dialog that needs to be
specified to get things in the proper order? Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Without a list to actually work on, I'm left to guess. There are some
settings per help:
"Sorts the selected lines or the entire document in ascending or
descending alphanumerical order. Use the settings "Case Sensitive
Sorting" and "Sort Removes Duplicates" on the Tools tab in the Options
dialog box to control the result. Depending on the number of lines to
sort and the amount of available RAM, this procedure may take quite long!"

I often have used Jody's Noteblock sorting that allows you to sort based
upon fields (use the space as a delimiter?).

I also have created some sorts that are more complex via clip and found
that there are several defects in Jody's sort. I posted about that two
or three years ago. I don't remember the specifics.

To do a more better sort, I take the last name and move it first, so you
are essentially sorting the last name first and then sorting the
first/middle, whatever second. I often use the menu sort under
modify/lines/sort, but there are settings in the view/options dialog for
that like do you eliminate duplicates or not?

Hello Mike,
Strange... What is the size of your document? Is it in a certain format?
There is a case sensitive setting (Options/Tools) that may result in an
unexpected sorting order. Or maybe you have selected part of the document?
(Noteab only sorts the selected lines - if all text, or no text at all, is
selected the whole document is sorted)

Hugo

So I'm a long time user/listener/lurker but I do not have a handle on
writing Clips. I believe its a case of old dog/new tricks and its
hopeless.

So, I'm asking "if" this can be done with NoteTab. I am wondering if
a Clip can do the following:

Open a web page (an ASP Page - which has a search field and export
button.)
Force the page to search for "%" (this is the default wildcard
search operand for ASP)
Give it a few seconds to execute, then force the Export (which
exports to Excel).

There are 15 such pages/exports.
Is there a way to run a clip that will perform this for each page and
save it all to the same Excel workbook.

Bottom line, I want a quick way to run this so I can click a button
daily, if need be, and obtain my information at basically a drop of a
hat (not to mention the time to actually do the compiling) but
something that I can let run and have it produce on its own without
having to manually open each page, do the search and run the export
15 times, then move each worksheet into one workbook.

There may be a way to do this within the ASP or something but I don't
know how to do that either....

I know you folks you love challenges and like to dig in and do... so
if you have the desire to do such a thing I say go for it.
HOWEVER.... I am not, 'asking anyone' at this point to do it. I'm
just sending out a feeler to see if NTB has this capability.

Run an ASP Query, execute the export to Excel (15 different reports)
and continue to add each to the same workbook. Each report has a
unique title (tab name).

Thanks in advance....

Laurie

Probably. Can you give us the page you need to "search"? What are you
searching for exactly if % is a wildcard? Are you just trying to grab
all info from the page?

Hi Laurie:
The answer is probably :-)
Do you use Firefox? There are two extension to Firefox: Greasemonkey
and Chickenfoot, also one from IBM research called CoScriptor
http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/coscripter which might be able to
do the interaction with a web page part of the task more easily than
Notetab clips. You might find that the remainder of the work can be
done with a simple batch script (which could of course be initiated
from Notetab though it might just be run from a double-click on a
shortcut on your desktop).

Full disclosure: I've used some prewritten Greasemonkey scripts but
never written any and have lurked on the Chickenfoot dev lists w/o
ever attempting to do anything with it. (yet another real-soon-now!)

However ... from the ease of use I remember from using CoScriptor
briefly I think it would definitely be worth exploring. If you DO
elect to go this route, please be sure to report back
success-or-failure or ask for advice if it comes to that.

Hey Don..

The database has roughly 240 records, if you search for %

It will display a list of all records pulling up the data for that one
table, there is a different page for each of the 15 tables.

Once the results are displayed, you can click the EXPORT button and it pulls
up a "Open / Save" dialog box like downloading a file.

I'm just wondering how a Clip might be able to perform those functions, it
boggles my mind and I can't imagine how.

Hey Alec.

I'm not a Firefox user, I have it installed but all of my business tools are
IE oriented and my online access is not happy at all with Firefox..

I will take a look at the plugins however and will also seek coscripter to
see if is something that *I* can handle J

Thanks for the direction, I appreciate it..
