Subject: Command line to open a heading in OTL

Send Email Send Email

Hi there! I'm looking for a way to automate opening of one .otl file
on one specific heading. Example: I have a list of contacts in one
.otl file where each contact is one heading.

As I use Windows launcher mostly (Executor) I'd like to have some
keywords in the launcher to launch the otl file and directly open that
heading i'm looking for, which, in this case, will be one contact.

Let me know if you ever tried that.

Thanks,

Ork.

While clips are beyond the basic list, this request falls within how
to do a certain NoteTab command line.

From Help:
Notetab.exe /L=LibraryName:RunClip

Create a clip and put it in a library that is activate with NoteTab's
command line parameters.

Use the ^!Open command to open the outline file, followed by the
^!TopicShow command.

For specifics on a clip to do this, take it to the clips list.

Say the clip is in MyLibrary.clb, and the clip is called MyClip, and
the outline is called My.otl with the heading MyHeading, use the
following NoteTab command line.

NoteTab.exe /L=MyLibrary:MyClip

I've been using NoteTab for several years and I love it. I jumped at
the opportunity to get the standard version at a reduced cost, and
went for the Trial Pay promotion something like six weeks ago.

Still waiting for a registration number, and not too impressed with
Trial Pay although I DID get the merchandise I ordered and paid for.

Are you sure you were supposed to get a registration number? Usually
there is no reg number. The trial and full versions are different
downloads. Does your copy of Notetab work? What does it say at Help | About?

Maybe you've done this already, but you can contact support here:

Hi Jeff,

Did you contact Trial Pay support?
http://www.trialpay.com/contactus/

I'm sure they sent you the registration details with the download link
to the full retail version. But that email may have been deleted by your
ISP or personal spam filter before it reached your inbox.

I am fairly knowledgeable for an old lady who's using a PC, Windows
XP, but not technical enough for the Notetab Pro. I have Notetab
Standard and do I love it...it comes up in a flash and I can paste
something in that perhaps I copied 5 minutes ago, so unlike Word, and
I am learning all the time, love the Clips, etc.
I have been saving all my files in Notetabs and also saving them in
the various categories of folders I've made in Favorites: Books,
Politics, etc.
I copied the entire Note Tab Standard folder over to my laptop and
was dismayed that the program only shows what I entered into it on
the laptop, I have copied the files into that computer's Notetabs
folder, but nothing is filed under Books, Politics.
What else should I be doing? To really save a file in a category,
should I keep it in My Documents as well?
I've tried to figure this out from the Help and forums but can't.

I copy all the files from the Notetabs folder that's on the Desktop
over to the laptop and then must drag them in one by one to their
proper folders. I quit doing that!

I don't quite know what to do either with all the files building up
in the program, there are too many now. I've made 1,000's of files
since installing NoteTab, bless it.

Thanks for any help.

You should INSTALLL (not copy) the program on the laptop.
THEN copy over your personal files and settings files, etc.

Of course you'd have to pay for another copy of Std, but I may be wrong on this
licensing issue.

Hi Linnea,

Adding a document to Favorites doesn't save it. Favorites are just
references to files somewhere on your HD, just as when you bookmark a
webpage in your browser, the actual page isn't saved, just a shortcut to it.

If you go to Favorites (Shift + F2) and select a document in the
list, you can see the path to that document in the little window at
the bottom. You can also read the master files for your favorites
directly. They are in a folder named "Favorites" inside Notetab's
program folder and they have the extension .fvr. They are just plain
text files, lso you can go ahead and open them in Notetab. Each one
contains a list of paths to the documents you've added to that favorites group.

I could be wrong, but my guess is you need to collect those files
from where they are on your PC and copy them to your laptop and then
create new FVR files for them. That's easily done since you can
create the .frv files manually.

Hope I guessed somewhat right. :-)

linnea - just one thing to add:
If you are using version 5.x (ie. post-4.9x) of Notetab your Notetab
files may *also* be stored in:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\NoteTab Pro
or in your case:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\NoteTab Std

(You said that you were using WinXP, correct? if you were using Vista
the location would be slightly different)

Note: that you may not be able to browse to that location in Windows
Explorer if you've never made hidden files visible. To do that, if
necessary go to Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-View and in the advanced
settings set "Show hidden files and folders" and (if set - unset Hide
extensions for known file types).

With that done, copy all the files from the \...\Application
Data\Notetab Std\ folder on your old computer to the equivalent location
on your new computer.

If you have the same folder setup on your old and new computers then you
should be able to copy (in Explorer) all your files from the old
computer to the new one and *magically* all your Favorites should work
again on the new computer.

Hope this helps rather confuses! :-)

Oh you are all just winners. Thanks so much. Now of course I don't
have time to suss all this out but I do know how to do all that and
shall as soon as I can. I'm dismayed but I had guessed that the
Favorites were references (too late I've guessed!) too bad as I have
1600 files to sort out and put in My Docs. somewhere, they were all
saved in the Notetabs folder on Desktop which is easy to copy though
to back up.
Re Al Guevara's good suggestion, I did install Note tab on the
laptop--- I wonder if it is Note Tab Light though as I used that for a
brief time first. Then I did copy the entire paid program to the
laptop from PC but perhaps I put that in a different path. Alex gave
good help there. I'll report if I can remember, gads, I am on the
computer so much that I spend my life learning, tidying up, deleting,
downloading, updating. I'll check on the business of having it on two
computers too. I do thank you ALL!
You've got my name right, I used the screen name Britta for a
while there and can't remember now why.

Hi Linnea, and the good folks here.

Since getting my first computer in 1986, I have gone through a lot of
machines and now have many thousands of data and picture and web files
to keep track of.

Very early on I learned that the default locations where multi
programs wanted to keep their data files was erratic and sometimes
illogical. The crunch came when trying to back up files to an external
medium or drive, or transferring all my files to a new computer. It
was tedious to find all the files in their various hidy-holes, and
there was always a nagging doubt that I had missed some.

So I created my own data master and sub directories, where I had full
freedom to break files into subject sub-directories,
sub-sub-directories, etc. Files could be separated and collated and
arranged however I found logical. Backups became easy and foolproof.
And it was a breeze to locate a particular file needed again, even if
20 years old.

After designing a master data file directory structure, it is easy to
tell each program the new default location where to put its files.
(Yes you probably have to read the programs' manuals or help files, at
least just this once ;-)

It takes a bit of time initially planning the directory organization
to suit your particular needs, but really saves time and frustration
over the years. And you can amend/reorganize it as your needs and
programs change.

Hallo to you all!
I am not a programmer but a writer.
I have downloaded NoteTab in the hope that I will find characteristics
of a programmers editor in it.
What are they:
1. Attach glossary files and search for text strings in them
2. Make usage templates including split screens
3. Create scripts of process steps and
4. Use scripts to execute programs and use the results in NoteTab.
I want to try and build a simple translation platform for my work.
Any one who has any experience of what I want to do and the steps I
have listed above and is willing to share knowledge with me, then I
would be pleased to listen.
I look forward to any responses.

I understand very little of what you said ...

Notetab is awesome for most types of programming in my humble opinion.
You can save common things in "macro's" called clips.

I'm not sure what you mean by glossary files, but you can certainly look
in files for text strings.

I'm not sure what you mean by usage templates.

You can create scripts of process steps ... that is an awesome feature
in this program.

You can use scripts to execute programs.

So I think if you are patient and take it step by step, you've found a
powerful tool.

Hello,

I'm also a writer and web designer/developer. I've used NoteTab's clip
libraries to develop my own custom HTML modules, and for me it has
been a tremendous helper program.

I'm not sure it can do all you are hoping for (some of that sounds
like eMacs, a popular programming editor in Linux), but NoteTab is far
simpler to use than a lot of editors, and the programmable clip
libraries make it very versatile.

If you take the time to explore NoteTab's features, I think you'll be
impressed. Just remember that more is not always better!

Thank you very much, Steve in Thunder Bay. I think I must have, at
first, just saved things in Notetabs and made a lot of Folders in
Favorites but now that I have too many files.

I have hundreds of folders & sub-folders in My Documents and thought
about what you wrote: I think I'll create new sub-folders in each one
that would be relevant, e.g. in Books, a Books Notetabs for a
sub-folder, ditto for Medical, etc. I think it would be simpler to
head right for the Notetabs group as I can remember what I've got in
this assortment pretty well. I've definitely used it to the exclusion
of any other writing program for a year now.

I am probably not up to creating a special directory just now but
shall ponder on that.
I do thank you for the mental jog you gave me!

LICENSING ISSUE: Your brought up a good point. I am usually very
careful to abide by Licenses and thought I was here, too. I looked at
the Fookes License again and yes, I can use it on one other computer,
if I am the sole user and using one at a time. I think I installed the
Note Tab Light on both at first and then installed it there, too after
I bought it (Standard). Perhaps I did just copy the Standard over to
the laptop via memory stick. I'll check on that...have just been
unable to catch up.
Thanks for the advice and I'll do that if I don't have it installed there.

I've just gotten a reply from TrialPay, and they say I'm past the
45-day deadline for resolving this. This will be the last time I deal
with TrialPay, and I don't blame Fookes Software for this in the least.

The trouble with this is that they say to allow 3-4 weeks for the
information to arrive. So that's 30 days. Then there's 15 days beyond
that to get any glitches resolved. Unfortunately for me, that 15 days
fell within a very busy time for me and on top of that some nice old
man pulled out in front of me and totaled my car. My tough luck.

I'll go back and see if I can find the registration number where I
paid for NoteTab Standard once upon a time (2001?). I should have done
that in the first place.

Thanks for the personal reply, Eric. NoteTab is an excellent product
and I'm proud to recommend it.

I probably didn't make it clear, I installed Lite first and then
installed Standard when I bought it (it didn't take me long to decide
to buy it). I may have kept Lite on the laptop until I put a copy of
the Installed version over on it but that doesn't work well, I'll just
go back from scratch with that since it's covered by a license.

Rather, I'll install the Standard from the website.

Hi all
One of you already helped me with this a while ago. In short: I need
to calculate the Paypal fees for concert tickets. The main "if" is,
that if the Paypal fee (5%) works out to less than 4 SFr, then the
Paypal fee should be set to 4 SFr. Postage is only ever the three
options, 8.40 or 6.00 or 1.00. The 1.00 is again linked to
another "if" ("Late" lines). The fans can select if they want to pick
up the tickets themselves (1 Fr instead of 8.40 or 6.00) but
sometimes it's too late to send the tickets, so we charge 1 Fr for
printing the tickets & the envelope so they can pick them up).

The input and calculation lines of my clip is below.

It works sometimes, but not always. It just calculated over 400 SFr
instead of 42 SFr, and - even worse - as soon as the price of the
tickets + postage is over about 200 SFr then it goes completely
haywire and calculates only 4 SFr.

I use exactly the same **script and calculation lines** for the
resulting emails in English, French, German and Italian, and
sometimes they work fine, sometimes they calculate wrongly.

Could someone test it and tell me what is going wrong ?
Many thanks for any suggestions. For testing purposes: the minimum
price of a ticket is, say 33 SFr and there is no maximum, but it's
the "200 SFr" limit which seems to wreck it.

Here are the lines of my clip:

^!Set %Tix%=^?[Tickets value only=1]

I didn't see any replies to your "another question" so I'll suggest this:

When you have multiple file-tabs you can go forward to the next file-tab
by pressing Ctrl+Tab
or backward to the previous file-tab by pressing Shift+Ctrl+Tab.
AND, this process wraps-around.
Hence, when you are on the first-file-tab, Shift+Ctrl+Tab takes you
directly "backward" to the last-file-tab, and
when you are on the last-file-tab, Ctrl+Tab takes you directly "forward"
to the first-file-tab.

See if this does what you wanted.

Dear all
I thought I had posted this yesterday but it doesn't appear in the
list.
Someone helped me with this clip about a year ago. For some year it
doesn't work properly any more. I am using NoteTab Pro (same problem
occurs with NoteTab Light as well).
Basically it concerns a calculation for payments by Paypal for
tickets under the following conditions:
- If the calculated Paypal fee is under 4 SFr then the Paypal fee
should be set to 4 SFr. Otherwise it should be the genuine 5% (which
Paypal takes off me in Switzerland as their fee).
- The price of ticket can be anything from about 33 SFr upwards.

The problems which occur are:
1) As soon as the price of tickets + postage hit 200 SFr, the Paypal
fee is incorrectly calculated as 4 Fr. 200 SFr seems to be a "magic
number"
2) When the Paypal fee is *under* 4 SFr, it sometimes doesn't change
this to 4 SFr.
3) For no reason which I can see, it sometimes seems to use the
values from the previous order, resulting in 400+ SFr for a 35 SFr
ticket.
4) If postage is entered as 1 SFr this then results in a message
depending on whether "Late" is set to 1 (=too late to send) or 0 (=
customer wants to pick the tickets up in person). This part works
fine.

Below are the most important clip lines. If anyone has time to play
around with them and test them with, say, ticket value of 35 SFr, 140
SFr. and 201 SFr and get it to work correctly in all cases, I would
be most grateful, because I am at my wits end.

Hey Don,
thanks for thinking of me!  I had forgotten about asking that.

Guess I should have thought of trying that. I can often use
the ^-tab to get from last tab back over to first tab, that
will help alot. Your answer will also help if I'm at first
tab and want to get to the last tab. Both those will be very
handy; many thanks for sending the info.

What I really want is to have a button above the two arrows,
like a double arrow, that will move a whole page full of
tabs at once, since I have, I guess, 40 files open. Arrowing
over one at a time is frustrating.

Best regards,
and thanks again,
Len

PS   the previous question, about selecting a column, that has helped me
immensely; I have lost track of how many times I've used that since you
all helped me with that.

You have them stacked? I think that would be hard to do, because I
don't think there is a way to (programmatically) know what tabs are
in a tab row.

Once you poke me in the right direction, I looked it up in

Thanks for the help.

The answers on this group have helped me so much.
Many thanks,

Hi all! This is my second topic ever on NoteTab. I love NoteTab and I
always skim all the NoteTab email.

Is there a way to use a clip to set the tab-size (its in the Document
Tab of the Options panel) to oh, say, 16 and then to reset it when I am
finished? I need to do this for my project, but I hate to think it must
be done manually.

Thanks!

Hi all!
This should have a simple answer, but I can't figure it out.
In my clip, I have told it to
^!InsertText ^%Tab%

But then I want it to delete the carriage Return that follows the tab.
Can I do this without using:
^!Keyboard DELETE

?

Thanks!

You might want to ask on the Clip List, also on Yahoogroups.
