Good point, that is how we got rid of excessive drinking and sexually
transmitted diseases as well. I'll now copy the off topic list where we
can continue our discussion if we wish. Please discontinue discussion
on the main notetab list if you would.

Undo after save is a NTB option.

View | Options | Files | Undo After Save (uncheck box)

768 MB of RAM is quite small. Open Task manager (Control - Alt -Delete),
choose
the Performance tab and monitor the swap file while you are editing your
text file.

For optimal swap file performance, your swap file should be:
1) On a separate physical disk drive from your editing files
2) Fixed size (Min = Max, You should set yours to 1.5 to 2GB)
        Start | Control Panel | System | Advanced | Performance (Settings) |
Advanced | Virtual Memory (Change) | Custom Size
3) Contiguous. Direct your swap file to your target disk AFTER you have
completely defragged the target disk (using most optimal setting)

If any of your editing involves clips, use

         ^!SetScreenUpdate Off

Updating the monitor is VERY time consuming compared to the actual editing.
That includes just scrolling down to the next edit item. And is seriously
affected
by your video card and driver. You don't need a game card but a cheap
"business"
video card with half a GB of video RAM could easily be 10 times faster than an
integrated motherboard chip.

Good luck, Art

In addition to setting the document font size, you must also set the Page Setup

Hi Everybody,

Will NoteTab Pro 6 do any highlighting, other than temporary (like in "Find"?

I would like to know if there is custom syntax highlighting of reserved words
etc?

This would not be used by me for html stuff, but to highlight certain strings or
words in text files.

I've seen the "Colors" tab in the "Options" dialog, but it seems limited. Am I
missing a way to do it?

Thanks,

Nope it isn't there and won't be there.

Eric is working on a "new" notetab called notetab enterprise that is not
really a successor to this notetab under the working title notetab
enterprise. It should have it.

Meanwhile however, Sheri wrote a great clip library that will do custom
syntax highlighting. I ran it for a bit but now don't. There are also
sites that allow you to upload and highlight for you.

I suspect the lack of syntax highlighting for languages or custom does
hurt the market share, but the current power under the hood apparently
doesn't allow for it.

Hello everybody! I am a newcomer to this program (Notetab). I am a dyi
computer dude . . . I've been using computers for about 15 years. But I don't
know what I know and more importantly . . what I don't know! My Dad always use
to say that the quickest way to learn something new was to first admit you don't
know how to do it! Well I don't know alot about 'Notetab' . . . however I am
trying with all my heart to develop a website for my music. I bought a great
book from www.sitepoint.com and the learning curve is happening! However I can
tell that I am going to definitely need advise and direction from others who
have gone before me!!
So here is my first question . . .a non-technical question I think only fookes
can probably answer but maybe someone out there has asked the same! Ques: Why
is it that if Notetab light is a free ware product . . . it keeps telling me I
have 'so many' days left to use it?? Do I have to purchase the Standard version
or the Pro version? Or can I just keep using the 'freeware'???
Your thoughts please!
Sincerely, Johnny!

Because you have selected the option to test the "Pro" features.
"Light" will revert to "Light" facilities only when the Pro test
expires.

I've discovered that the clips I write using NTP 6.12 do not fully function in
the Light and Standard version. I was
able to reproduce the problem by installing the free version, then running my
own clip library. Is this a known
situation, or a bug? The problem is really minor, but it was my understanding
that they used the same regex engine, and
would run the clips identically.

I wasn't sure which group to post this in, since it seems to be a clip issue but
may be something else.
Thanks!

Pro uses a different input control than Std/Light. Minor differences
have come up in the past. E.g., as I recall, the result of ^$GetLine$
was slightly different. In that case, using ^!Select EOL followed by
^$GetSelection$ instead allowed clips to be compatible.

Also (from the RegEx help Intro):

Note to clippers: By design, NoteTab Pro (but not NoteTab Standard or
NoteTab Light) adjusts the selection for regex clip ^!Find and ^!Replace
commands before acting on highlighted text if the pattern begins with a ^
and the existing selection does not begin at the start of a line. To
prevent this behavior, when using regex on selected text, do not begin the
pattern with a ^. If, for example, you prefix the caret with (?#comment),
NoteTab Pro will permit the possibility of matching at the beginning of the
existing selection and will not redefine the selection itself.

Thanks, Art, I use the caret a lot. My clip library runs over 10,000 lines, with
comments, and I suspect it is too much
of a job to add this comment prefix to all the requisite lines. This is really
unfortunate, since my users use pro,
standard and light.

I hope that, in a future version, this behavior can be eradicated, so that the
versions all do handle clips identically.
In the meantime, I'll advise my users to use NTPro to prevent erroneous
behavior.

For some reason the program does not load previous open files or even favorites.
Have checked both in Options but program loads blank text file when started. The
default directory is where these files are located.

Any ideas?

Also, how do you de-favorite a file once it is on the list?

Thanks.

M Brovage,

For previously open files, files that are open when you close
NoteTab, check this setting in the menu,

'View > Options > General' - Reload Open Documents

To remove files from the Favorites List,

'Favorites > Organize > Go To Favorites' - or, the default
shortcut-key way to get there is pressing - Shift+F2

from there delete the path of any file you would like to remove from
the list.

I'm _trying_ to wean myself out of Microsoft Word (for a number of
reasons, including having all the most necessary stuff in a flash drive,
and possibly moving to Linux in the future), but I'm stumbling on one
feature where I can't find a decent replacement:

Text comparison. I tried OpenOffice.org. I tried a number of specialized
text comparison tools. They all proved unsatisfactory -- mostly by an
inability to pinpoint the exact difference. This is a feature in which
MS-Word shines. I can open a HTML formatted file, run a compare with the
original plain-text file and it will pinpoint the changed words, if any.

Many of the tools I found, though, seem to be geared towards programmers
-- thus, they tend to do line-by-line comparison, and are totally
flummoxed by simple things like a different word-wrapping width. Others
just can't handle insertions or deletions more than a few words long
-- they can't seem to "resync" the text lower down. And few offer the
option to display results in what Word calls the "legal blackline" format.

Most will only work with plain text -- I would prefer one that is able
to understand formatted HTML. I'm concerned about the text content first,
formatting second.

Any suggestions?

Marcelo

If you want document comparisons (rather than line-by-line comparisons),
then you're probably going to need to use a document-oriented product,
rather than a line-oriented product.

Have you looked at Open Office? Its word processor appears to have a
comparer - probably very similar to Word's - although I've never tried it.

That said, however, if you want to compare HTML files, then you might as
well use a line-oriented comparison program, because HTML is essentially
line oriented anyway. The program I prefer is called "Compare It!" -
http://www.grigsoft.com/wincmp3.htm - although I think it's only available
on the Windows platform.

PS Just reread your message and wanted to add that I run TextDiff on Linux
using Wine. Works perfectly as does NoteTab and Photoshop etc..

Absolutely I have a suggestion. Without doubt (IMNOHO), the best text, HTML
(and graphic, HEX, mp3, csv, multiple programming languages, EXE versions,
UTF8, Unicode, ++), comparison program available is Beyond Compare.

        http://www.scootersoftware.com

I first discovered this app years ago after reading a gushing review. At first
I thought, "yeah, right" but gave it a try anyway. Well the reviewer was right.
Every time I thought the app should do something I found it already did. And
did it in a natural, intuitive way.

To me the most important aspect of file (text) comparison is the ability to
resynch after a mismatch. BC not only has awesome prowess in resynching
lines of text but it resynchs WITHIN lines of text! An inserted or missing
character will show up as just that, a single char diff not an entire line
mismatch.
(It even resynchs binary files!) And on those rare occasions when it makes a
poor choice you can easily resynch manually. It also has a built-in editor.

This is not just a simple char by char comparator but a fairly intelligent
one.
It distinguishes between important and non-important differences highlighting
them with different colors. The user can define the importance criteria - from
simple built-in white space selections or word substitutions to total
customization
using regular expressions. It blew my mind the first time I saw it deem a
PARAPHRASE of HTML code unimportant! (It was right!) The app can limit its
analysis to selected columns of text or HTML tables. It can even compare
a multitude of archives (ZIP, RAR, 7Z, gzip, TAR, etc - all the archives
that 7ZIP
can handle), and compare the files within the archives.

There are just too many features to this rich program to describe here. Try it
for 30 days free. Considering all that it does, the $30 cost is pretty cheap. A
Pro version which adds three-way comparisons is available for $50. Integrate
BC with the power tool file manager, ZTree, and you've got one h*ll of a system
for managing your disk. (email me for how to integrate BC into ZTree)

BTW, if you are limited to freeware apps try WinMerge (http://winmerge.org/).
It is OK but nowhere near as powerful as Beyond Compare.

Have you tried IBM Lotus Symphony? It's a free word processor. We use it at
the office, and I've heard people complain that change tracking isn't as
good as Word's, but it may be worth looking at.

Marcelo

It should; most 32-bit applications will run under 64 bit Windows with
no problems. (32-bit utilities are iffy, 32-bit drivers are unlikely to
work, though)

Never mind. I finally found it. It is in the .ini file under the section
[FindDialog]. To clear, delete all entries labelled SearchList_1="WHATEVER"

You would think there would be an option to just "Clear History" but I guess
not.

Thanks,

Running NoteTabPro 6.12. I have multiple tab's open. I jump to one of the tabs
and perform a F3 (Search) function. When I hit FIND NEXT it jumps back to the
last Tab. I then touch the Tab I want to search and hit F3 (or FIND NEXT) and
it jumps back to the original Tab to perform the search - very frustrating! Any
suggestions?

UPDATE: I had the "All Documents" option selected! All is well again.
