GDay,

gurboblast, sorry, I hit send too soon. If the document has pre-existing
tabs you may have to replace them.

If you are using a template, you may have to replace the tabs in the
template file also.

Try using tabs in a new document. Do you get real tabs?

What version of Windows and NTB are you using?

When I try tabs in a new document they work fine!!! It is only the one
document.. a program I am currently working on that has the problem. If I copy
and paste tabs within this document everything is OK, only if I enter tabs does
the problem occur (doesn't enter has tab but as spaces). I have a workaround
and problem was most likely caused by me experimenting with tab settings and
notetab not resetting itself correctly. Thanks....

Hi,

I am working on a fairly major clip and would appreciate some confirmation that
NoteTabPro be supported in Windows 8. I hope so. I have been using it for about
10 years and want to continue to be able to use it for years more.

Many thanks,
Martyn

Well given that most recent windows ops allowed you to roll back and run
something under a prior I gotta believe you will do fine.

Hi folks

Have been looking to replace my old XP machine and am about to
buy one with Win 7 Pro because I want a guarantee that it will run
my older programs including NoteTab.

While in Staples last week, one of the computer geeks there said he is part of
the Win 8 beta test program and that he believed emulation and XP are now dirty
words at Mr Softy. He is only running Vista or 7 era programs, so could not
confirm earlier program compatibility.

Does anyone have solid info on this particular aspect of Win 8?

I'd ask Microsoft. But, since business is a huge part of Microsoft's market, and
businesses tend to have their own
in-house software, if MS developed an operating system that wouldn't run their
software, they wouldn't change OS. That's
the mistake they made with Vista, and it tanked in the business world. Win 7
runs old programs just fine, and even runs
16 bit stuff if you use the 'xp' mode. That's how I run really old games and
other programs on my Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit
machine.

I find it highly unlikely that MS would step in the same pile twice.

John

No I don't have, but I should mention that I'm running Notetab Pro in
Windows 7 x64 with *no* special settings. Notetab runs fine natively.

As for aforementioned geek's claims, well... I have heard any number of
wild theories from computer technicians, journalists and know-it-all
forum dwellers over the years. Take it with a grain of salt. The size of
Texas.

First, consider that there's not much difference between a "Vista
program" and a "XP program," which would make it hard to make a cutoff
work reliably. Especially considering that, due to Vista's lackluster
sales performance, there's still very few Vista-and-above-only programs
in the market.

It's possible (even likely), however, that Win8 will be available only
in x64 version. That automatically makes it incompatible with very old,
Windows 3.x 16-bit programs. These have already been obsoleted by Vista
x64 and Windows 7 x64. But those still run XP-era (and even 9x-era)
programs.

Could Microsoft stop supporting 32-bit programs, and demand only x64
ones? Well, they could, technically. And that would have the effect of
blocking all the XP-era programs. But, here's the thing: it would also
block more than 90% of all other software, including many from Microsoft
itself. And that goes so against Microsoft's history of offering wide
compatibility that I doubt they would dare doing it.

Microsoft is not Apple; they can't impose a change and hope the market
will follow blindly. Vista proved that, and . They want Win8 to be a
success, not be rejected by the consumers like Vista (and "it does not
run apps I bought just last year" is a much more serious breakage than
"vista is slow and this UAC is annoying"). And it is important to their
longer-term strategy that it is a success, because it will help push
sales of Windows Phone through tight integration between the platforms.

XP is a dirty word in Microsoft right now? Well, kinda. They would
really like if XP users upgraded to 7 -- it would reduce their support
expenses, their bad press due to security problems and so forth. But
they promised a few years more of support, and they will have to live
with it.

Emulation is a dirty word...? I very much doubt that. Microsoft is
investing heavily into virtual machine technology. They are talking
about offering a consumer-version of Windows for ARM CPUs (they do offer
an Itanium version of Windows Server, but servers run in much more
controlled situations, not needing wide compatibility), for instance.
Since they have no way to *make* developers offer an ARM version of
their applications, that means emulation would be an important asset to it.

GDay All,

I currently have Microsoft Windows 8 Milestone 1 v6.1.7850.0 installed
in VMWare Workstation 7 and I can confirm that NoteTab Pro v6.2 FV
installs and runs with no problem at all.

As Windows 8, like all versions of Windows since '95, is built upon it's
predecessor, Windows 7, I see no immediate problems running NoteTab
under Windows 8 when it is released.

Any small incompatibilities between NoteTab and Windows 8 at the time of
it's release, will no doubt be rectified in short order. Although, I
doubt that any will exist.

You can drag the file to the desired window.

Hi,
I just upgraded from NoteTab Pro 4.9 to 6.2. I used to use shift + ctrl +
up/down arrow to use the mouse for scrolling. For example, I would place the
cursor at the start of a paragraph & then "shift + ctrl + down arrow" until the
paragraph was at the top of the page.

According to "Keyboard Shortcuts" in Help, this is now the way to select text
paragraph by paragraph. I couldn't find a shortcut for what I want to do. I
would be fine with setting up a shortcut myself, but I'm not sure if that's
possible or how to do that.

This is so disappointing; I used to use this feature all the time. Does anyone
have any idea if this feature is still available in some way?
Thanks!

I don't think that ever came up before. That's not the type of shortcut
that can be reassigned, those are the ones tied to menu actions. You can
of course use the scrollbar or mouse wheel. You could also put some new
clips on your clipbar to do the tasks. In addition to simple up/down
scrolling you could make a clip that scrolls the beginning of the
current paragraph to the top of the view. If you'd like help with that
please join the Clips list at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ntb-clips/>

Thanks. I've never written clips before, and I'm not sure how much time I can
give to learning that right now. I use this on my laptop, so I don't have a
mouse wheel. I may go back to NoteTab Pro 4.9. I really miss this feature!

This is strange... I tried the new NoteTab Pro on my PC at work, and the
Shift+Ctrl+Up/Down still scrolls instead of selecting paragraphs. I don't
expect anyone to know why there is different functionality with the same NoteTab
Pro version on different computers, but I just wanted to let folks know.
Thanks,

When I loaded a file into NoteTab  today, that I use regularly, it looked like
this:

Ó··p···pn·np··¨·]···n···Š8>´µ¼·òµ½¾¥À/%···„/¼%\
?½·+Û1µ:
Ó(ð¥¼Z/´·+µ½²¥¾¾
Ó„³·„µ%¾¥Ž·‹?_/>
ÓÝÚÝ·‡/¾Ž€·</>µ
Ó…ó²%¥>·

I was able to edit it normally using notepad. When I copied the text and pasted
it into a NoteTab document, it appeared normal.

Does anyone recognize this behavior?

Dragging didn't work.
I tried dragging from the tabs along the top, and I tried dragging from the F6

Anyone have any suggestions how I can get a doc into second window?

First make sure [Second Window] is one of your toolbuttons.
Following in my results from retesting (I always used to have problems
understanding how to get *exactly* the desired files positioned left and
right too :-( )

Starting from only one window displayed clicking [Second Window] will
put curr-file in right and file to left of it in tab bar in the left
window *except* if curr-file is left most (File_1) then File_1 goes to
right window and File_2 goes to left window.

From then on any clicks on tab bar replace left window's file.
*NOTHING* will change the right window's file.
Thus, if you want to get a specific file (File_R) in right-window, click
[Second Window] again (result is a single window), click on File_R tab
which makes it the only file, then again on [Second Window] which makes
it the right window contents.

Now click on the tab for file initially desired in left window (File_L)
*ALL DONE* :-)

Note: if you right-click on any tab and select [Allow reordering] you
can drag drop files in the tab bar and thereby get desired files a
little easier.
For some reason [Allow reordering] does NOT get remembered across
Notetab sessions. IIRC, Eric once gave explanation/reasoning for why
this is so but I just live with it and turn it on when needed. ;-)

You can drag it from Windows Explorer to the Notetab window.

Correction - if focus is in the left window and your click [Second

Alec,

Thanks for the analysis and tip. I long ago put the dual window link on my
toolbar but never bothered to ferret out the logic. I just got annoyed
every time I had to click, click, click to get the order right.

It may take a while for me to retrain the method but two clicks to switch
panels and one click to reload panel 1 shouldn't be TOO hard to remember.
Even with senioritis! ;-)

BTW - It would be interesting to hear Eric's logic on why he didn't make
the "allow reordering" option setting to be retainable. I can't think of a
single reason and it is a PITA to have to reset it each time.

Art,

Re: . make the "allow reordering" option setting to be retainable.

I did not know it was possible to do this. I've used NTP for over a decade,
and often wished this setting could be set as checked.

Can you please direct me to a how-to on this topic? I am fully current with
NTP v6.2/fv.

Kind regards,

RetiredEngineer1

Try reopening it with the File command and see if it reopens where you
want it.

These are the dawning days of the third American Revolution. Now is when we
reckon the costs of what we have and consider the costs of getting to what we
desire for our children's children.

Survival is the knowledge, willingness, and readiness to act immediately, in
avoidance, when the biological contamination is impelled in a lateral pathway to
a catastrophic interface with the helical centrifugal aerodynamic oscillator
impeller, and is non-systematically allocated in an accelerated radial
dispersion arc of universal non-uniform bio-toxic distribution, which results in
a non-recoverable situational status. (WTSHTF)

Thanks for the additional explanation!
and sorry, I didn't realize it was so complicated.

I didn't even realize there WAS a Second Window button, which thanks to you I
have now added.

Using NoteTab Pro 6,2 (fv)
I'm unable to get the Tool Names to appear (NOT talking about CAPTION) when I
hover the mouse over the tool. I was able to do this in older and freer versions
of NoteTab

On another machine, (a notebook, vista, NoteTab Light NTL), I am able to Drag
text from other windows programs such as Internet Explorer and just Drop the
selected text into NTL with no problem
And vice versa btw, grab text in NTL, then 'Drag and Drop' to say Google search
box

On the desktop (Vista, NoteTab Pro 6.2 (fv)) I'm no longer able to do that
I desire the Pro to behave like my NTL
Is there a remedy for this?

Unfortunately not. NTB standard and light use different input methods
(I've forgotten the technical terms). That used in Pro has other
advantages over standard and light. As a result, AFAIK, this is never
going to change.

I thought I would find this explicitly in the HELP-Comparison Chart but
unless I've missed it, its not spelled out anywhere (and IMO should be).

Atticus - for just that reason I also keep a current version of Notetab
Light available when I want to use drag and drop. I also occasionally
use PSPad (always free) for a couple of reasons though my primary text
manipulation tool remains Notetab Pro.

FYI - reasons I sometimes turn to PSPad - drag and drop from external
sources, multiple free standing windows (including drag-drop between
them) possible, show all search results, better rectangular selection
and a couple of others.
