John,

Thanks for the advice.

I actually shut UAC off entirely, but it's still happening.

I also completely uninstalled all versions of NTP and reinstalled NTP 7 in a
non-default, new directory -- it's still doing it.

Can you clarify what you mean when you say "edit the .ini file (using a
different editor) to ensure it uses the local copy" -- I found the .ini file
buried in the Windows 7 crap, but is it just a matter of changing the two fields
you listed, or am I looking for a setting that has a full path to the .ini file
listed or something?

Also, what I've noticed is this is all isolated to ONLY the Paste function. I
can still copy from NTP and paste into any other app. Even if I look at the menu
in NTP, it shows "paste" as an option after I copy -- it's just when I actually
paste, nothing goes into NTP, but will go anywhere else, into any other app.

So it's just paste, just into NTP, and it's not a problem in anything or
anywhere else.

ARGH!!

Pam,

No luck....

Disk Error Check showing no errors of any kind.
The disk showed 0% defragmentation, but I ran defrag anyway.
My hard drive is almost 50% empty -- many, many gigs of open space.

I'm still having the problem, but thanks for the suggestions.

You can't edit NoteTAb's .ini file using NoteTAb, because it will overwrite it
when it closes. So, with NoteTab closed,
edit the .ini file with Notepad, or any other text editor and make the changes I
indicated. Then, of course, place the
ini file with the NoteTab executable. Once that is done, it will use only
folders local to NoteTAb.

John

Thanks, John! Yeah, I definitely wasn't trying to edit the ini in NTP, just
making sure it was just those two attributes you mentioned.

So, I've got the .ini with the reinstalled, relocated version moved and I edited
both

UseRegistry=0
UseProfileFolder=0

Also redirected everything else in the ini locally (like the path for Templates)
and nuked everything NTP-related out of that c:/users/.../..../... crap
location. Also now verified that the ini is updating properly in the new local
folder.

OK, now let's see if that solves the problem! I'll report back here either way.

One can easily edit NoteTab's .ini file with NoteTab itself. One just needs to
run the ^!ProgIniLoad command via a clip when done editing and before closing
NoteTab, so the settings are synchronized prior to the .ini file being
overwritten.

So after editing the notepro.ini (Notetab Pro) or notetab.ini (Light or
Standard) save as .... with preceding exclamation mark in same folder as
the notepro.ini or notetab.ini and on next start NoteTab will notice
that file exists and use its contents to replace the one auto-saved when
you exit.

Notwithstanding that .... my normal method to edit the ini file would
normally be to edit it in NotePAD.

I did not know that. Thanks. I use EditPad Pro trial, and have for years, as the
alternate to NoteTab. It is a full
Unicode editor, and shows hex double byte so you can be sure of what NoteTab is
seeing. You can also save as needed, so
that you bypass the problems of NoteTab and Unicode files. When saved by EditPad
pro, you have a file that NoteTAb will
handle correctly.

Well, of course there ways around NoteTab's behavior, but we weren't talking
about changing it with clips. I use clips
to change it all the time, but know the rules. You can NOT edit the .ini file in
NoteTab, as I stated, and save it,
without NoteTab overwriting your changes when it is closed UNLESS you also take
other steps to prevent those changes
being overwritten. I doubt most people have a clip written that accepts changes
to the .ini file and then saves the ini
file changes to disk AND THEN reads the the .ini file back into memory before
closing NoteTAb, which is exactly what
must be done. Failure to do all of those steps will simply let NT overwrite the
.ini file with what is in memory – which
is what it started with, provided the memory version was not forcefully updated.

John

Hey John & everyone -- good to know. In any case, I edited the ini in Notepad
and have the program entirely relocated and contained to a clean, new folder.
I've also tried all the other suggested fixes in this thread, from checking my
disk to defragging to checking available space. I've entirely uninstalled and
reinstalled several times with no errors.

Unfortunately, I'm still having the paste problem. It worked for a few minutes
this morning, and now it's doing everything but pasting into NTP again.

I can still copy from NTP or anywhere else.

I can paste the text in the clipboard anywhere else expect NoteTab, even right
after Notetab fails to paste it into itself. And even NTP seems to recognize it
has something in the clipboard, because the Paste menu item is active. But when
I hit paste or CTL-V, nothing pastes.

Typically, the other programs I have open are MS Excel 2003 and Firefox 15.0.1,
although it doesn't seem to matter what I have open or don't.

Any other thoughts? I'm at the end of my rope here. I can't tell you how much I
don't want to give up and move to another product, but I can't reboot my
computer after every third or fifth or whatever paste...

That eliminated a lot of possibilities.

Now it appears to be down to NoteTab itself. The first thing I would do when you
can't paste is check whether the
document is write protected. Choose Document, look at the bottom, see if it is
write protected. That would block a
paste. I'm guessing that if you paste something with binary, or Unicode in it,
it may automatically write protect the
document, which would prevent further pasting. You can verify this by
duplicating your pastes in NoteTab into another
editor like EditPad Pro. (http://www.editpadpro.com/) You can use the full
version in trial mode, and it will stay in
trial mode with a nag forever. It is my backup to NoteTAb. The reason you would
do this is to look at the data that is
pasted into each, while looking in EditPad Pro in hex mode, so you can see the
actual code along with the characters.
Unicode uses two characters per character, ASCII uses one. Since EditPad Pro
fully supports Unicode, you will be able to
see what can't be seen in NoteTab.

Another test to try is to make sure your save options in NoteTab is set to
DOS/Ascii, and at the point where it won't
paste, instead copy your open document, paste it into a new document, and save
it. That will clear out any oddball
characters. Don't use the Save As, because it won't clear it. If you can copy
your existing document to a new document,
save it, then paste the original content into THAT document, then the original
problem is that there are non-ascii
characters in one of the pastes, which then prevents subsequent pastes.

Yet another test when something won't paste is to open a brand new document, and
paste into it the data that would not
paste into the previous document. If you can paste that into a new doc, it means
the previous doc has non-ascii
characters blocking pasting. If you can't paste into a brand new document, I
would really be surprised, but do let us
know how it turns out.

John

Hey John,

OK, first I checked if the documents were write protected, both before and after
a failed paste, looking at the bottom of the Documents menu. They were not.
(Which makes sense, because I'm 99.9% of the time using my own junk documents,
created new.)

Next, under Options, Documents tab, "Format - Save As" I set to "DOS/Windows".
There was no "DOS/ASCII" option, but I did note this was set to "Original"
before I re-set it. Please let me know if I didn't find the right place to do
this.

Next, once the paste failed, I copied the entire document, opened a new document
in NTP, and attempted to paste it there. I did not use "Save As" as you
instructed. No luck.

OK, but here's a GIANT clue (I think). I downloaded EditPad Pro 7 (trial
version) -- and, guess what? When NTP stops pasting, I can't paste that same
text -- or ANY text -- into EditPad EITHER! And SAME behavior. I can take that
text in the clipboard and NOT be able to paste it into NTP or EditPad, but if I
go over to MS Word, Excel, Firefox, or inside gmail, it pastes perfect! It also
pastes perfect into plain old Notepad.

For what it's worth, I've set up a shortcut that clears the clipboard (and which
I just tested again to make sure it's working) using cmd.exe, and that doesn't
do anything (other than clear the clipboard, if I paste into working
applications, now there's really nothing there.) But still no "paste love" in
either NTP or EditPad.

Also, for what it's worth, EditPad did act normal (allowing me to paste into it
for a while), but both NTP and EditPad stopped pasting simultaneously.

This is crazy and frustrating! Any thoughts in light of this?

Rob

Have you done any research on the internet for 'Windows quits pasting' to see if
that leads to some further things to try? You might
try the program mentioned here:

http://superuser.com/questions/145268/copy-paste-stops-working-on-windows-7

A bit late, but hopefully this can still help someone.

I have this exact same problem as well, on Windows 7 64-bit too. For me, I just
found out it was caused by Outlook 2007.

You can find out which application is keeping a lock on the clipboard by running
David Candy's app:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/temp/GetOpenClipboardWindow.zip

This gives you the PID which has the lock.

Hi Pam,

Thanks for the link! And, yes, I've been searching on everything I can think of.

I did download that program, and I did run it. It pops up a message that reads:

"Successfully opened and closed the clipboard. Does not appear to be any
problems."

(That's an exact quote.) So it doesn't appear there is any lock -- which makes
sense since I can paste immediately into anything other than NTP (or now
EditPad).

So frustrating. I'm back to working in plain old Notepad and it's horrible and
slow.

Well, just to be pedantic, you actually can simply and reliably edit NTB's
INI file with NTB itself.
Just edit a copy of the INI file in NTB, close NTB and overwrite the
original with the copy.

Or any of the multitude of alternative approaches posted.

I often have the situation of nothing being pasted but can trace it to the
failure of the preceding copy/cut operation. Howevr, I believe that you
have already verified that your clipboard is not empty when NTB fails to
paste.

Different apps seem to have different rules (or bugs?) for
locking/unlocking resources. As in any troubleshooting situation, when the
obvious doesn't work start looking for the non-obvious. What is unique
about your system that is causing your unique problem? Probably the
interplay between some apps or services. Start by eliminating possibilities.

1) Close all non-essential apps and run you tests. If the problems
disappears, restart the closed apps one-by-one or in groups until you find
the problem (there may be more than one or it may be a combination). You
may want to download Sysinternal's Autoruns
[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902] to prevent apps
from loading at boot and muddying the waters - not all apps close cleanly.
[Don't change any of the services.]

2) If the problem persists with only NTB running then you are down to
Windows itself as the problem source. Boot windows in safe mode and run
your tests. If the problem now disappears, it gets a bit tricky. The
difference between safe and normal modes is basically drivers and
services. To simulate safe mode while in regular mode requires preventing a
multitude of drivers and services from loading at boot. However, this is
somewhat dangerous as many services are essential to a successful
boot. Hopefully, this will be unnecessary.

BTW, another tool that I highly recommend is the freeware Hex editor HxD
[http://www.mh-nexus.de]. It has a small footprint, is fast, is very
functional and has a clean and intuitive GUI. You can paste the clipboard
into HxD to verify or examine the clipboard's contents.

Yes, if you open the 'remote' ini file from the C:\Users folder in NoteTab, and
save it, edited, in the NoteTab folder,
you will have achieved the same thing as editing a moved version. Then close and
reopen NTB and it will use the new,
edited one.

Thanks, Art! I've been doing that very thing (trying to isolate it), and I've
hit paydirt!

Here's the deal -- and it's been 100% consistent.

NTP works fine until I open Firefox to certain websites -- but it's only certain
sites.

The paste in NTP stops working immediately (but still works everywhere other
than NTP) if:
I have Google.com open (whether signed in or not).
I have gmail open.
I have USPS.com open.
I have Dropbox open

However, if I have many other sites open -- say, Delphi forums, a blogger site
(viewing or editing) -- it works fine.

Also, if, say, I open Google.com in a tab -- the paste stops working in NTP
immediately. But if I close that tab (and leave Firefox open), the paste begins
working immediately again.

So there's something running on some websites -- or something Firefox is doing
in relation to certain sites -- that's causing this.

Java? Flash?

I wish I had more web knowledge to know.

If anyone here has a hunch based on the websites, please let me know...

Good work! You can view source on those web pages to see what is different
between them and ones that don't cause a
problem. Look for doctypes, see if maybe html5 in one case, html4 in others,
etc. Flash or javascript or even java might
be involved. Try different browsers to see if it is only one browser or all of
them.

That fairly old thread seems to describe your problem but w/o the
identification of specific websites and some other comments about using
a fresh profile, trying safe-mode (to verify its not an extension)
neither of which seemed to be the problem, also about updating some
components and plugins ... there might be some inspiration there.

You probably know that a copy in a given application may (depending on
circumstances) load multiple data types on the clipboard and that per
rules in the receiving application a choice (sometimes selectable via an
option like Paste Special ...) of which format to paste is made.

My diagnosis based on what you describe and your ability to paste into
most apps but not into EditpadPro or Notetab after copying from certain
websites is that the data is there but the "preferred format" is somehow
invalid.

What to do next? (1) If you have Google Chrome (or can get it) try copy
pastes from "good" webpages and "bad webpages" per Firefox results. Same
symptoms or different?

There is an program clipbrd.exe installed in C:\Windows\System32 on
WinXP (but not on Win7 AFAICT) which identifies the various formats
found on the clipboard (and also allows you to save them etc) on its
View menu. I've copied it to my Win-7 system and can verify that it works.
In case its useful I've put a copy on my Google Drive for download:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BxZZowwJ_Hv-NDZfbk9MeENrclk

Something else you might want to try:
Latest V7 of Notetab supports pasting in HTML format.
This clip (in Library HTML-CSS - its at the bottom under useful commands)
H="Paste HTML Format"
^!SetPasteHtml ^?[Paste HTML format from Clipboard=_True|False]
Allows you to set pasting in HTML format ON or OFF - It would be
interesting to see what if anything you get if you attempt a paste in
HTML format from a "bad" site.

I found this clip useful enough that I've put it on my default Clipbar
but you don't need to know anything about clips to use it. (not sure
whether you are a clip user Rob).

btw: Has anyone else noticed that copying and pasting in HTML format
from Google Chrome has all sorts of "fluff" - seems as bad as HTML
produced by Microsoft Word :-( (Though it does validate as clean)

What version of Firefox are you using?

Hi Alec,

Thanks for all those ideas/links! I will try that stuff out for sure!

Also, to answer your question, I'm using FireFox 15.0.1.

But, in the meantime, I've narrowed it down more -- and it's consistent 100% of
the time -- the problem is related to "HTTPS" sites.

If the website is HTTPS and it's the "active tab" in Firefox (minimized Firefox
or not), then pasting in NTP stops working immediately.

Even if the HTTPS site is open in another tab, if a non-HTTPS site is the tab
that has focus, then pasting begins working immediately again.

So far, I haven't found a single exception, across 15 or more various sites.

I do plan to reinstall Chrome <sigh> to see if it happens with https sites
there. That would at least let me know if it's a Firefox-specific HTTPS thing,
or an HTTPS thing in general.

Also, fwiw, the behavior seems to be exactly the same in EditPad, although I
haven't tested it as thoroughly, I've had no variation so far.

The big mystery is why is this happening on my machine and not on anyone else's?
I've checked to see if I might have some malware associated with the clipboard,
but so far, the ones I've checked for (both manually and via tools) have come up
dry...

I had never opened Internet Explorer on this laptop (and hope I won't have to
again -- ha), but the security zone was set to the default -- medium high. I
went ahead and set every one to the lowest possible setting, except "restricted
sites" which I left to "high."

It's still showing the same behavior, fwiw.

Hi Alec,

I spent some time with your suggestions...

I worked through the suggestions in that post about Firefox; in fact I reset
Firefox entirely, in safe mode, disabling all add-ins. No luck.

I installed Google Chrome and got the same exact behavior -- https site up; not
pasting into NTP. Https not up, pasting works.

I ran clipbrd.exe, but it just shows my copies going in (similar to the way the
Office Clipboard shows them being copied). They're there, in the clipboard, but
if an HTTPS site is open in the web browser, I can't paste into NTP still.
(Although Notepad works fine, as does everything else...other than EditPad).

I tried messing with the Paste HTML clip -- both just using it "as is" and
bringing it over into a new clip, and it operated the same. That is, if no
HTTPS, it works. If HTTPS, then it pastes nothing.

I'm about at the end of my rope with this. The problem exists across browsers
and across text editors, but nowhere else. I'm at least limping along by
watching which site I have active when I need to paste and/or not having a web
browser open (if possible) when I have heavy text editing to do.

So frustrating.

I appreciate everyone's help so much, though.

Rob (others)
This is *very* weird. I tried to duplicate your problem copying from an
HTTPS site (eg. any google results page) in Google Chrome - I just
copied some random text from a search page and it pasted as expected in
Notetab v7.1 (the version currently getting ready to be release - will
be available here soon :-) )

Can anyone else reproduce these results? Rob has done such a great job
narrowing the test conditions it s/b easy to test on your own system.

It sounds like something peculiar to your system (if no-one else can
reproduce) but for the life of me I can't think what it might be. Hmmm
.... one thing you might be able to test. I think that if you run your
computer in Safe Mode (with Networking) you should be able to use a
browser and open Notetab and try copying from https:// and http:// and
try to reproduce the problem that way. Its unlikely to result in an
immediate solution but its one more data point that might help.

Also: Have you got another computer available or that you can get easy
access to? Now that we know you can diagnose the problem w/EditPad Pro
you wouldn't have to install Notetab at least.

re: similarity between EditPad Pro and Notetab. If you aren't ready to
just stop using computers all together and go back to pen and ink <grin>
could you try d/l'ing (free) PSPad http://www.pspad.com/. Its a free
text editor which shares some characteristics with EditPad Pro and
Notetab - there are lots of other (many free) editors but that happens
to be the one I use as my backstop to Notetab most frequently.

Hi Alec,

I will definitely give that a try -- as well as the other text editor!

Just one thing if others want to see if they can recreate the problem -- the
problem occurs if I have an https site open, but it is NOT limited to copying
and pasting from the web browser.

That is, if I have an HTTPS site open in my browser, if I go to copy from, say
Excel, and paste into NTP, it won't paste -- even though it would paste anywhere
else (e.g., MS Word, Notepad, even into the URL text box in the web browser!).

So the HTTPS site being open is a pre-condition, but copying from that HTTPS
site is not, if that makes sense.

FYI, I tried shutting of my virus software entirely, too, to see if that was the
culprit (and rebooted), but still no luck.

I am thinking it's the interaction of two or more random programs on my laptop,
but I have no idea how I'd figure out which.

I'll report back on the other stuff once I get to try it.

One quick note -- same behavior in PSPad!

So, it's something that NTP, EditPad, and PSPad have in common...that
applications like MS Word, FireFox, MS Excel, Notepad don't.

The latter all work all the time. The former, no paste when I have an HTTPS site
open in the background.

It's insane. There's some program interfering with the paste function, but I
have no idea what it is.

I think I've at least got closer to the problem .... read on ... :-)

This google search [clipboard copy paste fails intext:"https site"]
gets some interesting results.

It seems there is some concept of protecting the clipboard when a copy
is made from an HTTPS:// site because (I think) some malware/security
holes *might* be able to use remote-clipboard features (of which I have
*NO* understanding :-) ) to get access to stuff like banking details.

In the context of above link this comment:

sure sounds like what you are experiencing (but in the context of a
specific security application Prevx). http://www.prevx.com/

Now we *JUST* <smile> have to find out how it applies to your specific
situation.

In the interim - the workaround suggested on one of the links I browser
(can't find it now) of keeping an instance of NotePAD open, when you
know that you have an https site open copy from it, paste to Notepad
then re-copy then paste to where you really want it (Notetab).

From what I skimmed on some of those pages ... and depending on what
email client you use(which one is it?) you might discover you also have
problems posting directly in an email you are composing.

Regards ... Alec (buralex@gmail& WinLiveMess - alec.m.burgess@skype)

The following thread has a number of different solutions to the problem of
broken copy/paste. Hopefully, one of them
applies to your problem.

Hi John - I looked at the posts in that thread. A bunch of them seemed
to be generic (not fitting the narrowed scope of Rob's problem - https
site open) though the ones about rdpclip.exe looked like they might
match. AFAICT that only applies to issues with Remote Desktop Services

Rob - do you have this Remote Desktop Services "started"? On my Win-7
system its "manual" (ie. not running) or is rdpclip.exe shown in Task
Manager? Note: as I read the posts about this I think its a low-% fit
for your problem.
