The newest - 7.1 Pro.

To obtain the correct results, I copied the list of different words and counts
(which works as usual, except for the totals) into a spreadsheet and SUM'med.

The linecount is fetched from notetab itselv with wordwarp toggled off.

Hi Kim,

Thanks for pointing this out. It seems to be a display error rather than a
calculation error, as you indicated. We've made a note of it and will look
into it further for the next NoteTab maintenance update.

When I click to change the focus from one outline header to another, the
cursor is positioned at the start of the header. Is there a way to make
it automatically return to where I was the last time the header was
viewed (or at least the last time since the file was opened)?

Thanks

I don't recall a setting for that, but I think bookmarks work in outlines.
(Sorry, not at my PC to try)

Set bookmark #2 in topic #2 before clicking a different topic and press
control-2 (I think) from anywhere in the outline to return to that spot in topic
#2.

I appreciate the idea and had forgotten about bookmarks. However, it
turns out that, "Currently, bookmarks cannot span across Outline topics
and are lost when you move to another topic."

However, it gave me the idea of doing something with a clip (I know --
that's another group).

Thanks

Do you mean make the outline headers into separate regular files, or
something else?

Thanks

How do you show multiple OTL headers at the same time? I just tried to
figure it out and didn't see how.

Thanks

Hi
best to describe this is to open a brand new page ,be something like new.txt
then you goto wherever your otl folder is and click open you should have an
open otl in font of you , then go to your otl folder again and repeat the
process as many times as you want, you should have two to as many as you
open tabs across the top ? I am running notetab std
         THANKYOU dave m

That doesn't seem to work (the view reverts to the open copy of the
file), although maybe something like it is possible if one turned on:

View | Options | General | Allow Multiple Instances

Although it seems that would be fraught with the danger of editing
multiple copies of the same document. I didn't brave that one to see
if/how it works. :)

Guess I am. :)

Looking at the file "mutliotl.jpg" (at the page
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ntb-clips/files/ ), each tab is from
a different file. I'm talking about different Headers within the same
OTL file.

Thanks for your comments and taking the time to upload the screenshot.

One way you can always open the same file twice is to enable multi-instances,
and open the second copy as read-only in a second instance of NoteTab.

Another way, that worked in earlier versions of NT, had NoteTab allowing you to
load a second copy of the same file, if the filename were different (DOS SHORT
form vs Windows long form). This did not work, if both versions were identical.

If this 2nd method still works (couldn't test at tme moment, my Internet PC
doesn't have NoteTab), you can use the second window for the "other" outline.
Caution: Make sure your keep one of these files UNCHANGED, or it can get
confusing.

Cheers,

Eb

I see discussion has focused on non-clip solutions, but it doesn't sound hard to
create a clip for what you want. I picture running the clip which will present a
list of all the topics in the current outline. Click the one you want and it
remember where you are in the current topic and then switch to the desired topic
and go to the last position for that topic or the beginning if never there. You
could make it automatically clear 'memory' when switching to a different outline
or remember all settings until you close note tab or switch to a different
library. Yes, there are ways to save settings permanently. I don't know your
level of clip programming, but I think the basic script would be quite simple.

Thanks all. I'll play with this and if I have further questions will ask
on the Clips list. Will also suggest the feature to the author.

Search the Help file (not Clip Help, ordinary Help) for Auto-replace Mode.

As it says there, you can turn auto-replace on for any library from
the menu. What it doesn't say is that you can create your own
auto-replace library, like the sample ones mentioned, which won't
need to be "turned on" from the menu. Open one of the sample
libraries as a document and copy the first line. Open your own
library the same way and replace the header with the one you just
copied and save. That's it. Every clip you add to that library will
now be an auto-replace clip. Trick is to think of short and easy to
remember names for the clips...

This is very frustrating. I have been using Note Tab Pro v.4.95 on my older
Windows 98 computer for years. I just upgraded to v.7.1 on my Windows Vista SP2
Toshiba laptop.

I opened my favorite documents in Note Tab Pro, edited the options, and hid the
ruler, line numbers, and the clip book to provide maximum display space for the
documents.

In Options, Reload Open Documents is checked.

However, none of these settings remain saved. Every time I reopen Note Tab Pro
my previously open documents are closed. They do not even appear in the Reopen
tab. I again see the ruler, line numbers, and clip book. Readme.txt, Readme.otl,
and WhatsNew.txt are the only documents which appear whenever the program opens.

I can't figure out how to save my option changes or re-open important documents.

I'd really appreciate some help in this very basic issue, and in understanding
what is causing the problem. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Joel

Oops .. I just re-read your post. substitute Vista for Win-7 in the
following. :-[

Your problem is (I'm almost certain) that on Win-7 by default you don't
have permission to write to the Program Files location where you
installed NoteTab. When Notetab is opened, it checks for the existence
of notepro.ini in that folder and if *NOT FOUND* instead puts all the
subfolders for favorites, libraries etc that used to be there in
previous (ie. Notetab 4.95) versions in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Alec\Application Data\NoteTab Pro\NotePro.ini
(on WInXP) and (I think)
C:\Users\<yourname>\Application Data\NoteTab Pro\NotePro.ini

I suspect you just copied your old notetab setup to the Win-7
%progfiles% location after installing it. Correct?
If so, there are a bunch of ways to correct.
Simplest might be to just:
(1) uninstall your current Win-7 Notetab (after making a backup copy
just for safety)
(2) create a new top level folder (say) C:\myProgramFiles (this should
give you write access)
(3) Install Notetab in (say) C:\myProgramFiles\Notetab Pro.
(4) Copy the same control files you copied from your old system to the
Vista laptop.
and finally ...
(5) Run Notetab and verify that favorites, option etc. are now being
saved across program restarts.

Alex, thank you. That was brilliant. I actually didn't transfer my NotePro.ini
file from v. 4.95 thinking that that v.7.1 would set up its own .ini file which
I could just edit. When I saw that wasn't possible, I tried to copy and paste
the old v.4.95 .ini file in the C://Program Files/NoteTab7 directory. Windows
Vista would not allow me to do that. Instead, I followed your suggestion. I
uninstalled 7.1 and re-installed it to C://NoteTab7. Into that directory I was
able to paste the older NotePro.ini file. Now I have all my old settings and
open documents.

This problem was caused by Windows Vista (Windows 6). I still don't understand
why they made it more difficult than necessary, with the permissions feature. I
struggled for about a week just to upgrade Adobe Reader from v. 10 to v. 11,
following multiple steps and advice from Adobe support.

Thank you again, Alex. It's wonderful to get such a fast and helpful response.

Cheers,
Joel

You can read about how to use NoteTab 7 in Vista-Win7 in the general help
section. There are multiple approaches, but
the ONE thing you cannot do is have files in C:\Program Files that need to be
edited by a program. Generally, Windows
will move such edited files to a shadow copy location which is in a hidden
folder. You can find it by searching. But, as
with all Windows programs, you must run an install to install them, and an
uninstall to uninstall them. NoteTab will
operate just fine in Vista and Win7, even in the Program Files section, if you
simply do a normal install. If you want
everything local to a NoteTab folder, as I do, then it can't be installed in
Program Files. I have a folder called
C:\Programs where I install all programs that aren't explicitly written for
Win7.

Thanks, John. That's good advice to remember for other programs as well. I'll
also read the other Vista-Windows 7 posts to bring me up to speed. Many thanks,

Is there any fix to the amount of time 71Pro takes compared to 71std versus
6.5Pro ..

STD(and 6.5) is almost instant .. 7.1Pro takes between 10 and 15 seconds to load
on the same XP sp3 machine

Thoughts??

I have quite a few files that need 2 lines added, it's a rather cumbersome job.

I know how to search and replace for one file at the time, click on the tab, do
the search and replace, click on the next tab. Can I do the same thing somehow
for all files that are open? I don't want to use the search drive thing, have
too many files that I don't want to change.

Any advice would be appreciated, please not too technical.

Just tick the "all documents" checkbox in the "replace" dialog. It's
exactly what you are asking for.

Uninstall, then reinstall in a new folder outside of C:\Program Files, such as

This is very frustrating. I have been using Note Tab Pro v.4.95 on my older
Windows 98 computer for years. I just
upgraded to v.7.1 on my Windows Vista SP2 Toshiba laptop.

I opened my favorite documents in Note Tab Pro, edited the options, and hid the
ruler, line numbers, and the clip book
to provide maximum display space for the documents.

In Options, Reload Open Documents is checked.

However, none of these settings remain saved. Every time I reopen Note Tab Pro
my previously open documents are closed.
They do not even appear in the Reopen tab. I again see the ruler, line numbers,
and clip book. Readme.txt, Readme.otl,
and WhatsNew.txt are the only documents which appear whenever the program opens.

I can't figure out how to save my option changes or re-open important documents.

I'd really appreciate some help in this very basic issue, and in understanding
what is causing the problem. Thanks in
advance.

Cheers,
Joel
