Both Jody and Jim Hall replied concerning this... Jody's idea would
get you to where you want to be (albeit in HTML) but why not use a
word processor. A text editor (like NoteTab) edits text, a word
processor processes words. NoteTab bakes a cake, while a word
processor puts on the icing, the sprinkles, and the candles.

> It's hard for me to imagine how anyone can

I write my copy until it says what I need it to say; only then will I
go back (if I choose) and denote italics, underlines, etc, for which I
use Word 2000.
If I'm writing casual text such as an e-mail, and I wish to denote
*emphasis* I use asterisks, a web-based convention which I learned
only when I began to use the Internet. But if I employ that same
approach (asterisks) when I'm writing in Word 2000, the program
automatically underlines it for me! Ha!

>
> Or am I trying vainly to use an HTML text editor as a writing tool?

I don't think wour *efforts* are vain <grin> but you may be trying to
process words in NoteTab *in* vain!

Thanks for all of the informative responses.

I still have some questions about the distinction between a text editor
and a word processor, so I've subscribed to the Off Topic list and will
take it up there. I hope I'll hear from all of you on the other list.

I use NoteTab mainly for two different purposes.

First, I use it as my HTML editor for my web pages.
Second, I use it as my editor when I facilitate
on-line meetings. Because I have to take notes quickly
while I am on the phone and running the
teleconference, it is important to me that I have a
very quick and easy text editor that never locks up on
me as Word sometimes does.

Hi Carl,

I forgot to mention that one Carl. Mine is similar to yours for
my Clean-Funnies list, except for on my Funnies Clipbar I have a
number of tools. One takes the highlighted text, opens my funnies
Outline, and automatically searches the text. I normally do that
a couple times if the funny looks familiar to prevent duplicates.
Another button gives me the topic count, another cleans the funny
from eMail junk. Another can remove the line numbers and yet
another renumber for when I remove one of the lines in a numbered
list. Another joins one line and yet another joins all. It
depends on what the text is on what tool I use like delete the
topic if I find a duplicate or some other problem. There are
more tools too. :) Once ready with the title on the top line
which is used for the eMail Subject, funny title, and Outline
title, it is appended to my Outline file, then column wrapped to
68 characters, and shipped to Eudora. It takes me a couple
minutes to do 2-3 depending on their condition (excluding proof
reading).

As Carl might say, "Ya gotta love NoteTab!" :) You will know
what I mean if you are on his funnies list.

Simple, Clueless wants his cake and eat it too. He wants
WordStar and italics, bold, underline in the same program.
NoteTab can do that via the methods I provided if one is willing
to give in a little bit and use the work-arounds.

I like many others and I think what Clueless is looking for is to
not have to have a whole lot of programs to get all your work
done. If I can write a script or use some kind of work-around to
prevent me from opening or having another program - **I do it in
the Pro!** I have literally seen over a dozen programs go off my
machine because NoteTab provided me with a method, feature, or
script to do the task I needed those programs and many utilities
for. No, NoteTab cannot do it all, nor do I wish it too, but it
sure enough is great when it can reasonably handle it!

Good evening, everyone!

I'm sure this is a childish question, but in years of using NT I've
never edited an .otl! Is there an easy way to remove a whole topic
from an .otl at once, both header and content?

Thanks.
David.

Sure, right click over heading and choose Remove Heading, or make
a Clip and put it on your Clipbar with key strokes if you do it
often - obviously not yet. <bg> I would venture to say there
might be a feature I have never used as well, but perhaps at
least peeked at it once. :)

Then let's be childish :-). Try right-clicking on the heading/topic and
chose "Remove heading".

Hi! :)

David has already received ("childish") suggestions <g>, so let me say
this while we are on the subject of outlines:
As they are right now, IMO, the outline features alone of NTP are well
worth its price.

BTW, when can we expect "collapse, expand headings" features on NTP.
Or do we have them already?

This is what I mean:

Expanded:
--------------
Tasks
   Very easy
      1.
      2.
      3.
   Easy
      a.
      b.
      c.
      d.
   Hard

Collapsed:
---------------
Tasks
   +Very easy
   +Easy
   Hard

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I hope you've all had a wonderful holiday. I've started doing a bit of work
on the next maintenance release of NoteTab 4.84. I don't plan to add
significant features to it because I need to spare my time for version 5.0.
However, I will do my best to fix any bugs that I can reproduce.

You can download NoteTab Pro 4.84 beta #1 from the following page:

    http://www.notetab.com/beta.htm

The latest changes are listed below...

Main changes in beta #1
-----------------------
* NoteTab can now be started even if it does not find the efomacro.dll
file. If NoteTab does not find it, Clips using the ^!Keyboard and
^!TypeBack command will not work.

* Fixed print range setting being ignored when multiple pages are printed.

* Numbers containing a comma (e.g. 1,000,000) are no longer split in word
wrapped printed output.

* Fixed problem in regular expressions using tagged matches higher than
"\1" in a replace operation, which did not work.

* Fixed ^!MoveFile command "losing" files when the destination folder does
not exist.

* Fixed last character of parameter being truncated by ^!Shell command.

* Relative file names (like "../index.html" and "..\units\foo.pas") now
supported by the "Tools|Open File at Cursor" and Tools|Open Link" menu
commands.

* The ^$GetDocIndex(Name)$ now returns the index number of the specified
document, as indicated in the Help file.

Enjoy!

mcarter@...

There was a missing step in my previous TIP.

How to replace Notepad with Dummy Notepad Program in Windows 2000

1) Go to C:\WINNT\System32\DLLCache (This is a hidden folder, so make
sure you have Show hidden files turned on)
2) Copy NOTEPAD.EXE to another folder
3) Delete NOTEPAD.EXE from DLLCache
4) Go to C:\WINNT\System32
5) Rename NOTEPAD.EXE in System32 as NOTEPAD.MS
6) This will bring up Windows File Protection dialog
7) Click Cancel
8) It will prompt that you chose not to restore original versions
9) Click Yes
10) Copy special NOTEPAD.STB from NoteTab Pro folder to System32
11) Rename NOTEPAD.STB to NOTEPAD.EXE
12) Copy the attached NOTEPAD.INI file to C:\WINNT\System32

This points to the NoteTab pro executable. You will need to edit it if
NoteTab is not in the default folder: "C:\Program Files\NoteTab
Pro\NotePro.exe"

  <<NOTEPAD.INI>>
The contents of NOTEPAD.INI look like this:

--------------------------------8<-------- cut here
----------->8-----------------

[Application]
ExeName="C:\Program Files\NoteTab Pro\NotePro.exe"

--------------------------------8<-------- cut here
----------->8-----------------

Hi

Note tab is a great program! I sometimes need to replace text in an

Ray:

Step 1: On the View menu, select Options. In the Options dialog box, go
to the Files tab. Deselect "Make Backups".

Step 2: While you're there, look around. You'll be amazed how many
options Eric has programmed for you to play with!

I notice there are three options for reading egroups.

No mail/Web only.
Daily digests

How can I change between these three options by merely
sending a command email to an egroups address. I

Thanks for any help, in advance.

Hi Stephen,

In addition to what Julie posted, you can make mailto: Clips for
each list for easy sing on/off and option changes. See Clip
basics for those of you who do know how or post over on the Clips
list. mailto:ntb-Clips-subscribe@eGroups.com All the lists are
posted below.

Easy web sign on/off for the main NoteTab lists is at:
http://www.notetab.com/maillist.htm

Easy web sign on/off for all Fookes Software lists is at:
http://www.notetab.net/html/maillist.htm

I will make a post with all the lists that have the different
options in the future that has all mailto: links in it. My
signature lines almost all the time have subscribe and
unsubscribe mailto: links in them which are clickable to sign
on/off the list I am posting to.

Hi Cath,

Welcome to the list. The NoteTab Basic list, this one, is good
for learning NoteTab in general. The NoteTab and HTML list is
where we discuss web authoring and where all the web pros hang
out. :) Feel free to ask any question about HTML over there
regardless of how simple you might think it is "suppose" to be.
Don't get scared off with some of the advanced HTML over there is
what I'm trying to say. Hope you enjoy your stay! :)

I can't figure it out. How do you compose a Newsletter / eZine and get it to
display in a column width? My apologies if this is "off topic". Seems like it
must be basic...to everyone but me *L*.

Hi Dan,

The Clips lists is for discussion of Clip authoring and we also
use the list for more advanced questions about the use of NoteTab
and things like RegExp, PERL, GAWK, to bug Wayne for the updated
Wayne's Cross Reference, and so on. :)

ClipClass is lessons that I have been giving and so very latest
on the next one I'm ashamed to admit it. :(

This is off topic indeed. The answer is you use tables with margins and
gutters. See http://www.bestfoot.com/test/margins.htm for example, but add
another column for the second column you would want I assume. You need to
hold columns with the space.gif's or you will find the browser may shift
columns on you.

Hi MCMAIER,

Please send anymore posts about the ClipClass to me in private
eMail. I hope the following will answer most the questions you
may have.

>Jody, does your "clips class" begin with "Clips -101"?

The Outline starts with the Welcome letter and the Library starts
with ClipClass Info. If you are meaning does it start at a 101
level, then yes, but it does assume that you know NoteTab fairly
well. It is all self paced and assignments do not have to be
turned in, nor do you have to sign up for the mailing list for
it. You will just need to download every couple of months to get
updated or see if there are any new lessons at eGroups and then
download. The second link below only needs to be downloaded one
time.

For further information please read the first few headings in the
ClipClass Library and go to the following web page which could
stand a little bit editing, but it is still fairly accurate. I
added more since I wrote, "It is the responsibility of the
student to read and have a good understanding of the basics found
in NoteTab's Help in the following three sections although you
should read them.

Clip Language - Introduction
Clip Basics Create
Clipbook Libraries

http://www.egroups.com/group/ntb-clipclass

All the contents of the zip files go in NoteTab's Libraries folder.

http://www.sureword.com/clipclass/clipclass.zip
You only need to download the next one time.
http://www.sureword.com/clipclass/tooltips.zip

Please be kind enough to report errors in private eMail to me.
