We are looking for more great Software Engineers to join the Solution
Street Consulting team in the Northern Virginia. Project related
skills are: Ruby on Rails & MySQL

Typically our consultants work on-site with project teams staffed with
a mix of Solution Street employees and Client personnel for that
project.

We are currently looking to hire intelligent people who can
communicate well. Must have at least 1 year professional Ruby
programming experience.

We are looking for people who are the best in what they do. This means
that they write better quality software than most, fix bugs quicker
than most, and can communicate ideas and solve problems on their own
or in a group.

If you are one of these people and

- you are interested in working for a company solely made up of
software engineers,
- you are tired of working for a company where marketing guys are
selling software that doesn't exist;
- you are tired of project managers incorrectly estimating software
development efforts,
- you consider your programming skill a craft that you are constantly
improving,
- you always comment your code,
- you can write,
- you can communicate,
- you are honest, and
- you are better than 80% of the software developers you have met...

Then send us your resume at jobs@...

Company Description

Solution Street, based in Northern Virginia's high-tech corridor, is
an information technology consultancy that helps public, private,
government, and non-profit organizations achieve their business goals
through the design and rapid deployment of web applications. Solution
Street employees are experts in building large, highly scalable and
well performing web applications using J2EE, .NET, PHP and Ruby on
Rails technologies.

This thread describes the basic problem that I was trying to solve, and
it seems that Capistrano doesn't support my use case.

The winning lightning talk from the last meeting was Ryan McGeary's talk on
CoffeeScript. He provided this link to his blog post about it.

http://ryan.mcgeary.org/talks/2010/10/21/coffeescript-novarug/

This was a very cool talk, especially to those of us who are doing lots of
javascript in our Rails applications nowadays. Ryan gets a free ticket to
Rubynation 2011 and a speaker slot, where he might just give an expanded version
of this intro to CoffeeScript.

All,

Dave Keener asked me about installing Ruby and Rails on Windows. I
created this blog post based on the info I wrote up for him. I'm
posting it here in the hope that someone else might find it useful.

The easiest solution might be to standardize the deploy path on each server,
using symbolic links if needed. Then your recipe doen't need any special
cases. HTH

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, that won't work in this case.
There are a bunch of other issues too, as I'm essentially trying to
execute the same tasks across heterogeneous installations of Joomla,
some of which are on separate servers and some of which are on a single
server under various virtual hosts. I took my issue to the Capistrano
list and have gotten some suggestions there.

If I come up with something useful, I'll report back.

I'm looking for an experienced developer to work on a CMS project for George
Mason University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The project is
about halfway complete and we lost a team member to a new job out-of-state.

We are building a CMS to drive the college's sites using Rails 3.

The ideal candidate will have:
- Demonstrable Rails application development experience;
- Experience writing unit, functional and integration tests;
- Strong SQL skills;
- An instinct for good user interface and information architecture;
- Facility with JavaScript (JQuery), CSS, XHTML and the DOM; and
- Energy, creativity and a passion for writing well-structured code and
delivering quality work.

Terms and schedule are negotiable. This is a temporary, wage position
which will last approximately six months on a full-time schedule or
longer if the developer works part-time.

Sounds like they did a pretty good job recovering. I remember when this
happened to ma.gnolia and they didn't have a backup so they just went out of
business.

So does this imply that the production database password was the same as the
test one??? Because that would seem to be the only way the prod database
could have been destroyed like that (well, assuming they are using Rails
which I am not sure about).

I think it means they have the password in version control, not necessarily
that they are the same.

FYI, Scott will be at the DevIgnition happy hour on Friday at around 7 PM. If
anyone wants to stop by for a drink please do so. GitHub will be sponsoring the
meetup.

This will be at Champps in Reston (DevIgnition is at the Oracle Reston building,
just a block or so from Champps).

FYI, I just got this from Derek.

Gray
----
Ruby on Rails developer
Location: Chantilly, VA
Duration: 6 months to perm

looking for an experienced Ruby on Rails developer to join a small team and take
charge of a critical web application. The project is stable, it has been going
on for several years, and we have many customers. The baseline is constantly
changing and evolving based on both our own ideas and our customers' needs for
adding capabilities and making improvements. You'll be working with a few other
Ruby on Rails developers on the same web application. This position will require
making design decisions for the web application and to technically oversee the
work of the other developers. This position is not an exclusive front end or
back end developer; work is involved with all parts of the Rails application.
There are other Ruby on Rails projects in various stages of development within
the organization, and you may be asked to provide guidance and recommendations
for such projects.

Here's what we need you to have:
. At least 2 years of professional web application development with Ruby on
Rails on a production system.
. At least 4 years of professional web application development in any language.
. Database design and SQL experience. You need to have a good understanding of
how ActiveRecord works in Rails.
. Front end design experience with HTML and CSS.
. Experience with JavaScript
. Experience writing unit and functional tests in Rails.
. Experience developing in a Linux/Unix environment.

Here's what our ideal candidate would have in addition to the above:
. B.S. Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other related field.
. Experience leading development of Ruby on Rails web applications in a team
environment.
. Experience with MySQL.

Thank you,

Derek S. Adams

This is question for anybody who has used facebook api. I am trying to use
omniauth (to authenticate) and rfgraph (to query graph api) in my rails app but
cannot seem to get the email addresses of my friends. I saw quite a few postings
on the web that said this is not allowed for privacy reasons. Also looking at
the facebook api's permission page
(http://developers.facebook.com/docs/authentication/permissions), looks like you
cannot get access your friend's email. Does anybody know if this is possible or
not?

You might ping Dave Keener if he doesn't join the thread. He's done a
lot of work with the Facebook API and gave a presentation on it last month.
