Yes, they should work just fine. We also support languages like Japanese
and Chinese.

Hi,
We would like to let more people know what is being done with NS Basic/
Symbian OS. While the product is still very new, we know that there are
a number of apps are already out there.
We would appreciate if you could share with us
- comments on what NS Basic/Symbian OS is like to work with
- downloadable programs you may have
You will get some publicity for your work, and help us grow the product.
Thanks!

These items are all on the roadmap, but no date has been announced for them.

Are there functions/commands allowing access to the internal GPS in
some of the supported phones? Does anyone know if the bluetooth
profile in some/all of the supported phones support a bluetooth serial
port? Would there be commands allowing basic data to be passed back
and forth, such as texting access?
Thanks

Sorry about the N95 error. I knew that, but just edited it to the
wrong group. Oh well, the numbers are accurate otherwise.
I know phone prices on eBay are risky, but I've purchased four phones
off of eBay without problems. So, that's a lot of money saved for me.
You are right to point out the risks to others though, as they may
not be aware of watching out for scams. I may get burned some day,
but I will have saved plenty of money getting there.
As for the different flavors of Symbian (S60 3rd ed vs UIQ3), I think
I stuck with devices that were listed as being supported in NSBasic
docs ( http://www.nsbasic.com/symbian/info/faq.html ).

Hi,
the N95 is made by Nokia
be carefull about 2 things with Symbian and eBay
1) Symbian = Nokia, devices made by SonyEricsson or Samsung are not
made by Nokia and the OS is slightly different, at least enougth
different to have a lot of applications not working, so be sure
NSBasic and StyleTap are certified for it
2) these prices are too low to be honnest, what would you do with a
cellular if it's simlocked or worse if the unlocking process has
failed and the device is definitively locked ?

I've been tracking Symbian device values over the past week or two so
I could buy one as a test platform. It's help make sure I didn't
spend too much. I thought I'd share the device values with everyone
in case others want to get a Symbian device off eBay.
Sony Ericsson
M600 - N= 2; mean $132+/-$58; median $132
P990 - N=13; mean $157+/-$34; median $155
P1 - N= 9; mean $242+/-$36; median $249
N95 4gb - N= 1; $330
N95 8gb - N= 3; mean $540+/-$37; median $550
Nokia
E62 - N=29; mean $ 86+/-$30; median $80
E61 - N= 8; mean $131+/-$36; median $131
E61i - N= 4; mean $187+/-$54; median $188
E71 - N= 1; $400
There are significantly more Nokias on eBay than Sonys, as I started
collecting Nokia data at least a week after I started collecting Sony
data. Please note I only included devices initially listing less than
$150, so the prices I list above are falsely low, especially for the
expensive devices.

If the firmware on your device is not up to date, you may run into problems.
On most devices, dialing *#0000# on the phone will bring up the firmware
version which is installed on your device. This website will help you
determine the current version on Nokia devices:
http://hunajatehdas.net/nokia/firmware/en/
We've seen this fix problems on E61 devices a few times - others are
probably also affected.

One of the problems with Series 60 (S60) is the sheer number of devices
that have been released and that are upcoming. Knowing which ones do
what and matching them up to your needs is a tricky task. Which is why
I've set out to help you, below. Hope you find it useful!

NS Basic/Symbian OS 1.0.1 is available. It features a number of
enhancements and bug fixes.
Download instructions have been sent to all licensed users. If you're
using the demo, download it again to get the new version.
What's new in 1.0.1
1. Samples: Stock Quote added.
2. Runtime: Grid.TextMatrix fixed.
3. Runtime: Localization preferences (dates, etc.) should work now.
4. Runtime: StyleTap updated to 0.9.012
5. Samples: Controls no longer hangs
6. Installer: Files are now installed into c:\NSBasic_Symbian
7. Installer: Option added to start IDE or HelloWorld on completion
8. Installer: step added to register controls
9. Compiler: Output files renamed for more clarity
10. Compiler: Error 70 fixed.
11. Compiler: S60 and UIQ installers can both be made in one run.
Documentation Notes for 1.0.1
The default Files Directory, which is used to store projects,
installers, samples and libraries has been changed from c:\NSBasic to c:
\NSBasic_Symbian. This will avoid the confusion with NS Basic/Palm
projects, which used the same directory. If you are using the default
folder, you will need to move your projects from \NSBasic\Projects to
\NSBasic_Symbian\Projects.
Unfortunately, there is no debugger. Since the IDE runs on one computer
and the executable is on another, it's tough to communicate back and
forth well enough to make a reasonable debugger.
On the other hand, it's relatively easy to put in some MsgBox statements
and recompile.

congrats for achievng this project, nice to see PalmOS UI again with
NSBasic on symbian but I got some troubles
tested on Windows XP SP3 and E65, compiling of some samples...
Controls or Listbox fails with "run-time error '70' permission denied"
and NSBAsic crashes but the sisx file is generated, same with listbox,
but HelloWorld and DigClck2 are ok
installation on my E65: HelloWorld and DigClck2 are ok, Controls runs
well but unable to exit and close the app

Now that NS Basic/Symbian OS 1.0 has been released, we have opened up
this board for posting. You'll need to become a member of the board
(quick and easy to do) before you can post messages.
You have the choice of looking at the messages on the website, getting a
digest by email, or getting all individual postings by email (what I
do). A nice thing is that you can send message to the board by email as well.
Just a reminder: Valid uses of this forum include discussion on:
- Questions about how to do things in NS Basic
- Programming tips, techniques and info on NSBasic
- Posting of sample code.
- Announcement of cool apps developed with NS Basic
- Jobs or projects, available or wanted

We're ready to start beta testing NS Basic/Symbian OS with a limited
number of beta testers. The product is looking pretty good for a first beta.
Requirements are:
1. A Symbian OS device, running UIQ 3 or S60 3rd Edition.
2. Time to do testing. Be honest - we only have a limited number of slots.
If you already have an NS Basic/Palm app, you can start by bring that over.
People who are interested should send an email to beta@.... Be
sure to include what device you have in your email.
Thanks!

We're in London, England today showing NS Basic/Symbian OS at the
Symbian Partner event.
We had a number of meetings with people from Symbian, Nokia, Samsung,
Motorola, S60 and UIQ. There are a few agreements that need to be signed
before we can release the beta: I got verbal reassurances that the
approvals would come quickly.
I also got to make a 5 minute "Fast Pitch" on NS Basic/Symbian OS to top
executives of many of the companies and carriers that were present. We
were one of just a dozen or so companies selected to do so. It got a
good response, and a number of people came up for more information
afterwards. We're getting great support from the Symbian Community.
