Hi there,

I'm also trying to get php up and running, however I'm on openslug.

Did anyone build the mod_php for apache? I think this would be best for me.
I tried to modify the bb-file for php to build the module and then
crosscompile on my debian box. However, the configure script said
"compiler cannot create executables". Anyone an idea?
Or even better: has somebody a binary ready?

I also tried with thttpd and the binary from the php-package via cgi, i
wrote a little shell-script as a wrapper, which calls the binary. This
works for simple scripts, but not for POST-request...

Thanks for any help,

Jochen

I've posted a micro howto on my blog.

http://www.itopen.it/2005/11/04/compile-mplayer-on-unslung/

I hope you find it useful, I'm sorry I don't have
time/skills to build an ipkg package, I also don't
know if I am allowed to post precompiled binaries.

Hope it helps.

Subject: Maxtor OneTouch II drive not recognized by windoze
bushtor
Send Email Send Email

Hi,

I wanted to use my NSLU2 box with a 200Gb OneTouch drive backup large
files. However it does not accept huge files (13 and 16 Gb)claiming
immediately that that there is 'Not enough space on the disk'.
Smaller files (megabytes) copy w/o any problems. The drive is
completely empty and reports 200Gb free space. Any clue why it won't
accept huge files?

I had somehow accepted that I couldn't get this to work, so I decided
to plud the OneTouch into a windoze box to reformat it. However the
OneTouch utility does not display any partition information and there
seems to be no way to partition / format this drive (with an exiisting
NSLU2 ext3 file system on it).

How can I have the drive recognized by windows again..?

Finally, does it exist 3rd party firmware for the NSLU2 box allowing
reliable copying / transfer of huge files..?

Thanks for hints on these issues...

best regards

Hello,

I am using Dovecot as an IMAP/POP3 mail server. I hope I am not the only one.
I have installed "version 1.0.alpha1-6" via ipkg install.
Most things are working good but when I am using IMAP I get errors in the
logfile:

file mail-cache-transaction.c: line 684 (mail_cache_add): assertion failed:

Can someone tell what this means and whether ther is a solution ?

Hello,

I've installed and configured unslung 5.5b last night and was able to
add a few packages to enable kernel nfs, and everything worked very
well...

A big thanx on all of you guys here!!!

But, now being a little braver I wanted to install a few more packages...
My attempts failed with

# ipkg download bash
Downloading
http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/unslung/cross/bash_2.05b-5_armeb.ipk
Collected errors:

So I tried

--- www.l.google.com ping statistics ---
8 packets transmitted, 7 packets received, 12% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 20.1/35.3/111.3 ms

And it seems as if the network, dns and stuff are working properly.

Can someone tell me if ipkg download is working? And if so, what am I
doing wrong?

TIA

Has anyone else noticed that the ipkg feed seems to be unavailable?
If you browse to the list of packages, you don't get any downoad
links to the actual packages, you just get plain text.

I'm also unable to "ipkg install foo", probably for the same reason.

Or am I missing something?

thanks

It appears the US ipkg server is returning 404s. You'll just have to
hold out for a little bit, I expect it'll be fixed fairly soon (or if
the server serving changes, IIRC they are rotated).

I am confronting the same issue as described below. I can't seem to
run .php scripts which includ exec, system or passthru without hanging

you didn't say what version of Windows you are running, but if it is
win2k or XP, you should be able to get into the Disk Management
utilitiy and reformat it as NTFS. As you correctly observed, the
NSLU2 formats the drive with the ext3 file system, which Windows can't
read or write to (though there is a 3rd party that will read such
drives).

I believe that the file-size limitation you experienced might be
related to the linux kernel used in the Unslung project. Have you
tried the OpenSlug firmware to see it if also experiences the same
limitation?

I'm wondering whether I might be asking more of the poor little NSLU2
than it's capable of.

I've got apache running on port 80, a Python-powered blog on port
9080, another Python-powered web app on port 8080, a mySQL database
and a couple of other processes.

My server seems to just clam up after a while, and my ssh connections
are all cut. The hard drive access light begins to blink continuously,
and I am unable even reboot the unit with the power button. If I pull
the power plug, then the drive is not recognized when I start up
again, so I have to plug the drive into another Linux box and run
e2fsck on it.

Is anyone else doing anything similar with their NSLU2, and if so, did
you have to add more memory or swap to get it to not fall over
continuously?

thanks,

OK. Thanks for your replies. I too am at a loss at how to fix the
PHP system call problem.

Similiarly I was trying to use exec, system, passthru, mail etc so I
could automatically have an e-mail sent when an event occurs within in
my PHP script. (My application forces me to use PHP so trying CGI,
etc is out of the question.) Has anyone figured out any work
around to this problem in order to be able to send mail from within an
apache-PHP script?

I was thinking, for example, of creating some sort of mail daemon that
I had runnning in the background on my NSLU looking for certain files
created by my PHP script...then if it saw them it would read their
header and use this to smptclient mail the content it to its
destination. I have never done something like this before, so was
wondering if I might be missing a more elegant work-around? I have no
problem creating files in PHP...just figuring out a way to have them
automatically e-mailed since all of the commands I can think of in PHP
cause Apache to hang. Thoughts or comments would be much appreciated.

OK, I read that the latest (2.3r63) allowed NTFS access so I formatted
a HD w/ NTFS and tried it.

When trying to copy over a large directory w/ a lot of files / subdirs,
it would always give me an IO error on the very first file. If I tried
to copy a small file, it was OK.

Reformatted to EXT3, and it seems to work OK. Is this the case w/
other people here? Is the NTFS support just too buggy to deal with?

Hello,

I have a: V2.3R29-uNSLUng-5.5-beta with a 512 flash drive has main disk.

I would like to know what I have to do to fully back up the flash.
I would like to duplicate the existing flash drive so I could use the
duplicate on another nslu2, without having to have to install
everything again.

By the way anyone know:
     - can I still use the web interface after UNSLINGING ?
Why does this happens ? It seems it happened after I
changed the ip address of the bix using the web interface.
Not sure though it could be because of something else.

Thanks a lot,

Pedro

I got a slug and a hard drive and am trying to set them up as a backup server.
So far I've done this:
* Put the drive in a USB enclosure and connected it to my laptop.
* Untarred the Debian tarball to the disk.
* Connected to Redboot, downloaded the kernel with HTTP, and tried to boot it.

This resulted in a nonbooting slug, though I could get into Redboot again. The
file is 973364 bytes. Do I have to split it before loading it?

I attempted to build unslung, intending only to use the split program, but it
didn't work. It hung somewhere, after spewing numerous "bitbake" messages
that are meaningless to me. How do I get the slug to work?

Hi All,

Has anyone had any luck getting Mono up and running on the NSLU2 in

I'm trying to get Mono working on a Vulcan board from Arcom which uses
an IXP425 but lacks the tools to comile Mono onboad. I've tried using
their cross compilation environment to build from sources but it
always fails. I hope when my NSLU2 finally arrives I'll be able to use

I'm new to the embedded world so any help would be appreciated!

I don't know why it is locking up, but I'd suspect you are overloading
it. Try one of the other web severs. Apache seems to balloon up to
over 20 megs of memory after time on my server, despite the fact that
I have it at about the minimal configuration. Cherokee takes between
.7 and 2 megs and has almost all of the functionality of apache. fast
php support isn't there, but php works through cgi.

I have web, ftp, mysql, php, and ssh. Memorywise, this takes 35Mb,
which is well within the limits of the SLUG. The last thing I need to
get in there is mail.

Good luck

yes, you can still use the web interface after unslinging. make sure

What about running an SMTP daemon (or using an external one)? That is
already written and is all about sending email. If you can open a
network socket to it and speak SMTP, you can send email. SMTP isn't
very hard. It basically consists of...

HELO mydomain.net
MAIL FROM: <me@...>
RCPT TO: <them@...>
DATA
From: My Name <me@...>
To: Their Name <them@...>
Subject: Mail from my PHP script

The blank line above seperates the message from the header.
This is the message.
The message is terminated by a line with just a period in it.
.
QUIT

I'm going off of memory for the above, but it is basically like that.
If you don't care about server responses, you can just print that stuff
blindly to the server and wait for the connection to close. If there is
a PHP module that does the same thing, that would probably be even
easier.

If you have sendmail, postfix, exim, etc., then you already have an SMTP
daemon. I think that if the sender and receiver are local to the
domain that the SMTP server serves, you can leave of the
@domain.net parts of the addresses, and they will default to the domain
of the SMTP server.

Subject: Finally able to print through CUPS using a USB 2.0 hub!

After browsing the net for experiences from people using usb hubs
with their NSLU I almost thought it would be impossible. A lot of
people were claiming only USB1.1 hubs would work together with the
NSLU. I wanted to proof them wrong and bought a Linksys USB2.0 hub,
because if it could work, it should work with a Linksys :-). And
today I finally made it work.

My hardware:
- NSLU, Unslung 5.5 / V2.3R29
- Corsair FlashVoyager 512MB (NSLU USB port 1)
- Linksys USB2HUB4-EU (NSLU USB port 2)
- HP Deskjet 940C (HUB USB port 1)
- Maxtor OneTouch 200GB (HUB USB port 2)

The trick to make it work for me was to hook up the printer on the
USB hub before the external harddisk. My first attempt failed when
the Maxtor was on port 1 of the hub and the HP was on port 2. The led
of port 2 never blinked. After switching the harddisk and printer
both leds blinked after the NSLU was fired up again.

I can print comfortably from Windows XP with the use of CUPS. There's
only one little 'issue'. If you switch your printer off and on again,
it won't be 'recognized' again (no plug&play). One has to restart the
NSLU to be able to print again.

Hope this info will enable more people to use USB2.0 hubs together
with their slugs. I'll start hooking up one or two webcams to the hub
as well... probably the harddisk has to be moved to port 4 of the hub
to let the NSLU recognize the webcams :-)

Greetings,
