Subject: Problem with HDD and Backup feature

Hello,

I recently bought the NSLU2 but have several problems. I already installed
the newest firmware (V2.3R63-uNSLUng-6.8-beta) to ensure, that this is not
the reason for my problems.

Configuration:
1 x Trekstor DataStation maxi t.u external HDD 400 GB USB 2.0 (SAMSUNG
HD400LD) --> on Port 1 as NTFS formatted
1x Trekstor DataStation maxi t.u external HDD 400 GB USB 2.0 (SAMSUNG
HD400LD)--> on Port 2 as EXT3 formatted (from the Nslu2 itself)

Problem:
1) The NTFS HDD can be read and write without any problems but the EXT3
formatted HDD is not accessible via FTP.
2) When I try to save for instance a new password I get the error message,
that file could not be opened
3) Trying to enable the Backup feature cause the error message "Warning: No
enough HDD ready. Drive Backup function cannot be enabled"

Well, I guess there is a problem with the EXT3 HDD in general. But I'am not
able to determine where and why there is a problem, the same HDD with NTFS
is working on the Port 1, so I'm sure, that there is no mechanical problem.

Maybe one of you can help me?

Merry Christmas :-)

greetings from Austria - Peter

Ext3 support permissions on file level. There is no support for
permissions in ntfs. On ntfs all the files are writeable for everyone.

Maybe the directory "/public" is writable through ftp but i am not
sure how you have setup your accounts.

The password file is protected and only the "root" user (admin account
under linx) is able to write the file. You shouldn't edit this file
manualy unless you know what you are doing.

The build in backup feature is broken for unslung. But i doubt that it
will work to a ntfs drive.

For more info:

I can't find a problem with the disk. Probably there are locations
on the disk you are able to write to. Otherwise you have to change
the permisions on certain locations.

On the otherhand i wouldn't use ntfs. The ntfs support on the nslu2
is broken. You can't save permissions our ownership and under heavy
io the slug will hang.

As a linux newbie i'm struggeling with the touch command. I want to
change the date of a directory like: "touch dir" (without the quotes)
but i get an error message:
touch: setting times of `dir': Is a directory
It works okay for a file: "touch file"
Does anyone know how to solve this. If I look around on the internet i
can find examples where touch is used on directories as wel.
I'm working on a backupscript with rotating snapshots and want to give
the snapshot directory the time the backup was made.

Hello,

I'm the happy owner of the NSLU since a week. I've upgrade the NSLU to the
unslung version and everything works ok.
I was able to telnet the device, with no disk connected, with root, uNSLUng. But
as I want to install Twonkymusic, I want to have root access, when my disk is
attached.
While I tried to change the password, I think I srewed something up. When I
start a telnet session (no disk attached) I get the following back:

---------------------------------------------
Jeroen:~ Jeroen$ telnet 10.0.0.103

Connection closed by foreign host.

---------------------------------------------
Can somebody tell me what I should do, to sove this?

As I still haven't been able to change the password, can somebody help me on
this as well. Even when I follow the instructions at "Changing the password from
the comand line" I can't get the password changed, somehow I do something wrong
or mis a step.

I must say, I'm not a very experienced Unix/Linux user. So the most obvious
things are not so obvious for me.

Anyway thanks in advance.

Jeroen.

Probably the easeast way is to reflash your slug.

Have a look at:
	 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/RecoverFromABadFlash

After that you have a fresh flash image and you can start over.

Change the disk back to flash and unsling it again. The unsling
script will ask a pasword for your root account.

1) Install the gnu coreutils
2) Use "/opt/bin/touch -m <dir>"

Thanks marcel,

that worked.
I had already installed coreutils but had not understood from the
manpage that touch -m works on a directory.
Thanks a lot,

Peter

These directions say to add a user so I don't clobber some files. How do I
do this? I tried adding a user via the web interface called "siegfried" but
ssh did not accept this as a log in.

While logged in from the root account, I tried the command "adduser" but
that did not work either.

Could someone kindly tell me how to do this?

Thanks!

Well I cannot find sql-bench:

# find / -name sql-bench

Should there be such a directory and file?

Hi,

I am using DebianSlug on a 266 MHz NSLU2. Recently I got lots of
problems related to the memory while running a relatively low number
of processes: sshd, screen and rtorrent/libtorrent. I am posting a few
kernel entries into the syslog. After a couple of page allocation
failure messages the kernel kills rtorrent. Any suggestions how to
solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There are a lot of ADC (analog to digital converter) and DAC (digital to
analog converters) for windows based USBs.

What is the best way to connect ADC and DAC chips to a unslung? Should I try
to reverse engineer some windows based product or start from scratch?

Where is the best way to learn about USB? Where is all the logic for USB
implemented? In the driver? Do I need to learn about Linux device drivers? I
assume the source for Unslung is available. Should I download that and try
to compile it? Where is the download page?

Has anyone else connected up ADC and DACs to unslung or SlugOS?

Thanks,

Probably the easiest way is to use a image program (e.g. ghost)
and let them write the images to a share. You could share the 400 GB
disk as one share with samba.

> 2 what firmware should i use

One that supports samba and is easy to maintain.

Probably you could use the standard linksys firmware for this
but unslung add some extra features.

I wouldn't recommend openslug or debian slug unless you have
linux experience.

> 3 i also like to set it up as a time server

There is a full "ntp" implementation for unslung.
Just install ntp (not ntpclient) on unslung and tell your
windows pc's to use that ntp server.

Siegfried,

All you need to do is develop some simple scripts and use 1wire from dallas and
install a couple of packages....

It works so well its like having a "purpose-biult-appliance"

Checkout this thread Re: [nslu2-general] Re: Does anybody use the Dallas 1
wire with the unslung 6.8

SLUG (Unslung 6.8) + 1wire + owfs + rrdtool + thttp + smtpclient + NTP = 1
rock'n little SLUG for data collection and control

   Thanks,

   Siegfried

I tried doing a google search first but could find nothing.

When I do "make" (as per the standard steps in
"http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Development/MasterMakefile") I get
the following error (see below).

Is there something wron with the svn.openwrt.org site and I should
just try later?

Why are we going to openwrt.org anway? I'm trying to compile unslung,
not openwrt!

Thanks,

Accept the certificate, and all will be well (as the message says, it's just
a hostname mismatch: the text string "svn.openwrt.org" !=  "openwrt.org").
The Master Makefile is just that - a *master* makefile, and it's doing all
the setup necessary to prepare for building anything the project builds, not
just Unslung.

I do agree that it would be nice to have a trimmed-down build environment
for Unslung itself. It's on my list of things to do.

Run "make unslung" if you don't want the other firmware distributions built.

The wiki article is about how to *fix* the Linksys backup script so that it
would work again -- which is quite different from trying to add new
functionality to the Linksys backup tool such that it can backup non-native
devices on a hub!

What you are trying to do cannot be done by the Linksys GUI tool. You'll
need to craft your own copy mechanism to copy the data from the one drive to
the other. This might be a very simple thing to do with the "rsync"
utility. If you wish for it to run periodically, you can use the "cron"
mechanism provided with Unslung.

Based on the "hdd_1_x_1" description, it seems clear that you are attempting
to copy either FAT or NTFS volumes; I don't know how rsync responds to that
(as these volumes do not have the attributes it expects to see). Probably
you will require special flags to instruct rsync not to copy ownership and
permissions.

I think I had something like that happen when I installed unslung. In
my case I think it came from me missing a step in the unslinging
process.

On this page http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/Packages

It says to install package "unslung-feeds". I think something bad
happens if you don't.

There are a variety of linux drivers for USB ADC/DAC boards. See:

ftp://lx10.tx.ncsu.edu/pub/Linux/drivers/USB/

http://www.comedi.org/

You would need to cross-compile for the nslu2.

Best thing to do is put a serial console on it - it almost looks like your
Redboot boot script has been corrupted (unless your telnet client is giving an

Hello,

my NSLU2 cannot boot, with the original firmware or unslung 6.8, the boot

when I connects at startup with telnet, there is an error:

but now, if into Redboot I execute the command boot, there is no more error.
Then I execute go and after that, the boot process continue and I can access to
the NSLU2 through web interface.

My current configuration is unslung 6.8 with one unsling disk. I have the same
behaviour with or without attached disk.

Has anyone idea about this problem. I would appreciate a lot if
someone could help me.
Thank you.

Afternoon,

So after installing Unslung 6.8, unslinging, getting everything i
wanted set up and copying some files across to the slug, I rather
foolishly edited /etc/fstab to mount the drive with the noatime
parameter. After a reboot, the drive seemed to have reverted to the
original fstab, so i updated again and replaced all versions of the
file that i could find (including one in i think /initrd....).

I can now get to the web interface but can't telnet or ssh into the
box. SSH comes up with connection refused so I presume it's not
running at all. Telnet parses the passwd file coming up with no such
file or directory errors if i connect without specifying a username.
If i specify a username, it tells me "no address or nodename"

I think i've made the following errors:
- changing /etc/passwd for root to point to bash rather than ash
- editing files in initrd (which i now guess is the internal flash)
- not using a diversion script to do these things?

Any thoughts as to how i can fix this?

Cheers,

Andrew

Reflash the firmware and unsling again. It's very difficult to repair any
other way, in the absence of a serial console.

Why do you want to build unslung from source?

The normal way is to install the binary.

But it should work. Yesterday i build unslung 6.9-alpha from monotone
on FC6 x86_64.

I also build unslung on FC6 -- as well as FC5. I seem to recall that the
gcc 4.0.0 compiler with FC4 caused problems, which forced me to upgrade to
FC5 in order to build Unslung.
