Based on your description I'd wager a guess it is indeed the PSU (or,
to use
one of the most hilarious english words I've learned in years "wall
wart").

Measure the 5V at the USB ports under load - in my case (faulty PSU,
normal
operation ever since replacing it) they dropped to around 3V when
something
was connected there.

Eike

Yes indeed. Fault diagnosed as low voltage when the disk is plugged
in.

So I followed a hint from the Wiki which infers changing a large
capacitor in the power supply and the voltage now seems stable at
exactly 5 volts, with or without load (will monitor this, seems to be
still stable after 2 hours running).

And my NSLU2 seems to boot up correctly.

But it is now broken in another way. I cannot see it over the network.

The ether port seems to be live. Also I have re-booted my router just
in case the problem is else where. The web interface, shares and pings
etc all time out.

I have also tried detecting the NSLU2 using the original set up CD that
came with the unit but cannot detect it on the network.

Running the unit low voltage yesterday has obviously broken something,
I noticed that the unit seemed to keep re-booting about every 10 second
or so.
Hopefully a data corruption some where rather than hardware fault.

Later today I will check through the mailing list postings, I seem to
remember some posts on this subject.

Ah, I didn't see that hint back then. I just went ahead and bought a
generic
PSU with the appropriate rating which set me back $15'ish.

I'm 99% sure the hardware is ok - until I found the source of my
problem I
was trying to run my slug for extended periods of time with no adverse
effects (except not working before the psu was replaced).

I'm not sure the config tool will just any slug or only those in
upgrade mode.
As a non-windows person I'd suggest putting the slug in upgrade mode and
trying upslug2 in discover mode. After trying that you can power-cycle
the
slug and nothing will be changed. If that works my guess would be that
the
network config on the slug got borked.

Before you try all this you should give the default IP of 192.168.1.77
(IIRC)
a spin (if you haven't done so already).

Now 99% certain that the hardware is OK again. Latest problem looks to
be corruption in the sysconf, but have managed to get it back to life
without re-setting the sysconf using many Wiki pages for reference. The
procedure used is posted below, perhaps may be of use to others who
come across this page.

Using:-
1. Used a direct crossover cable connection from my XP box, also
involves changes to the XP network settings.
2. Checked I could ping redboot 192.168.0.1 to prove the ether port is
working.
3. Because my NSLU2 seemed to fully boot I used the 20 second long
reset (button on back of unit), which set the IP back to default
192.169.1.77 followed by a re-boot.
4. Managed to enter the management web pages 192.169.1.77, everything
very strange here such as Chinese character set selected and strange
messages about broken Samba i.e. all settings total garbage apart from
network IP. Used the web page 'reset to factory defaults' button which
mended many things (had to do this twice, firstly seemed to fix the
Samba warnings, second time sorted out many other corrupted fields).
5. Re-configured many necessary network settings in the management web
pages.
6. Plugged the unit back into the router and re-booted disk less
successfully.
6. Enabled Telnet and logged in as root/uNSLUng
7. Had to delete /var/run/usb_det.pid and re-boot again followed by
another telnet as above.
8. Hot plugged in the disk and waited for it to mount. With my disk it
normally takes at least 30 minutes to hot mount properly, (something to
do with the quota function/disk size/qty of files etc).
9. Followed the Wiki procedure to check for disk errors, a small
number of orphaned inodes fixed (always seems to be about five to fix
with the unslung firmware).
10. Re-booted with disk attached successfully and it seems to be back
with no apparent functionality loss or loss of data.

Unsure if it is totally back, suppose time will tell.

In the UK, Maplin's seem to have a compatible power supply for less than
Ł10, if it looks to be going down again I will instantly bin it and go
for a new one hopefully before any damage to NSLU2 or disk files.

Also I suppose the only way to guarantee a corruption free sysconf is to
follow the Wiki procedure to wipe and re-generate it but I prefer to
keep anything to do with reboot access/flashing firmwares back as a last
resort.

Hi guys/gals.

I have own a NSLU2 for some time now, i run Gentoo on it. the firmware that i am
using is OpenSlug-3.10-beta.

My NSLU2 was working fine with a seagate 2.5'' until it died recently so i
replace it with a
Nexstar 3.0 (V13-3210). i can chroot in to my HDD with no problem but i am
unable to
boot to it. the content of my /linuxrc is:

root@iLazar0:~# cat /linuxrc
#!/bin/sh
leds beep
sleep='15' UUID='ca36fb67-3b63-471c-a6d1-9de49c43af1a' exec '/boot/disk'
'/dev/sda1' '-t' 'ext3' '-o' 'defaults'
exec /boot/flash

The HDD is in /dev/sda and sda1 is my / partition. i get no errors reflected in
to my
gentoo install so i have no idea what is wrong and i tend to thing that it has
to do more
with the actual NSLU2.

Any ideas what this could be? any ideas how to make the boot process more
verbose and
to force it to write the output to a file or something ?

Yes, I used simple machines (www.simplemachines.org), and it works fine, but
make sure you put a light theme, use SQLite. Also won't work for too many
users. I'm using Cherokee and Openslug 3.10.

Cheers,

Hi All,

I am new to the group and would like to ask a question.

I have a DVD player with a USB port that will allow a files to be read
from a USB Memory Stick. Can a NSLU2 be configured to appear to the
DVD player as a USB memory stick but allow access to storage devices
as well as the NLSU2 we accessible via a LAN from other Computers?

Many Thanks for any advice,

The standard hardware does not support this; the exposed USB ports are
host ports -- you need to be able to use a port that appears on the
other end of the connection.

There is such a port on the NEC USB chip used in the NSLU2, and some
folks have reported success in wiring up a cable to it. Recent emails
have indicated that there seems to be some device driver and other
software issues present, even if one got the port wired.

So in a nutshell, it would be a good project, but not something that has
been known to work (and communicated to anyone here).

Hi, pinforest. I don't understand what you're asking here. You mean,
if you mod the SLUG with 2 extra USB ports, and provide power from the
on-board 5.0V rail provided to the board, will it still boot?

I can tell you that I have an extra power supply that provides 3A
(think stock is 2A), and I've wired both on-board ports to provide 5V
supply, and I've also added one of the 3 extra ports to also provide
5V, and I haven't seen a problem.

If you're talking about whether the auto-power-on mod still works with
the extra 2 ports having 5V power provided, I don't know. I'd have to
try the auto-power-on mod first.

I think the problem here is the wording of the question. The second
attempt at the question, appears to be referring to a specific
method of always powering the slug, the method I believe being
referred to is by sticking the 5v supply up a usb port rather than
using the power socket. If you use this particular method of always
powering the slug and have extra usb ports fitted will the slug
still always power up?

As for the answer, no idea, you'll have to try it.

However if your question is based on one of the other methods of
always powering up the slug, by using a solution which mimicks
pressing the button in some manner. I can't see why the additional
usb ports should create a problem.

I'm not currently using extra internal usb ports, however my own
personal powering up solution , checks for usb power and if not
present presses the button, which means that even if the slug
inadvertently shuts down it will automatically restart. Unlike the
one on the wiki which only does it's stuff when the power is first
applied.

Hopefully that has helped in some way, even if only to get the
original questioner to state specifically what powering up method
they are referring to and why they think there may be a problem.

No, there is nothing in the hardware that will change to prevent this
(illegal) technique from working.

However, current is not supposed to be flowing backwards into the USB
host in the first place. So the fact that this works is rather an
accident, and there's no telling what might go wrong as nobody AFAIK has
studied the power distribution in the NSLU2 enough to know.

My first concern would be the current -- I'm not sure what your USB
device will do when it has to power itself, the NSLU2, and the three
other ports you'll have (that's about 2.5 - 3.0 amps of current, rather
more than the USB spec of 0.5 amps).

Hi all,

I've got an Unslung NSLU2 (Unslung 6.10 beta I believe) that I use to
run the TwonkyMedia software for strea, ming to my MP3 player in my
living room. It's booting off a 4Gb USB stick and is just great.

What I'd like to do now is to mount a Windows server share (via Samba)
on the NSLU2 and make it appear as a directory that can be indexed by
the TwonkyMedia software. Whilst I can mount the share, I think the
permissions are wrong somewhere as it's just not being indexed by
TwonkyMedia.

The command I am using is:

smbmount //192.168.1.1/Music /public/DawnCottage -o
username=SambaUser,password=SambaUser,gid=everyone,uid=guest,fmask=700,dmask=700

That command gives the following:

drwxrwxr-x 4 guest everyone 4096 Jul 1 21:41 Athlete
drwxrwxr-x 7 guest everyone 4096 Jul 1 19:57 Compilations
drwxrwxr-x 3 guest everyone 4096 Jul 1 21:42 Crowded House
drwxrwxr-x 4 guest everyone 4096 Jul 1 21:44 Daft Punk
drwxrwxr-x 2 guest everyone 4096 Jul 1 21:45 Daniel Powter
drwxrwxrwx 1 guest everyone 4096 May 1 21:06 DawnCottage
drwxrwxr-x 4 guest everyone 4096 Jul 1 19:18 Girls Aloud
drwxrwxr-x 4 guest everyone 4096 Jul 1 19:19 Jack Johnson

As you can see, the permissions are different on the DawnCottage
folder - the mountpoint. The directories are all within /public and,
as you can see, I want the mounted share to appear as a directory
within the local music collection (in /public).

TwonkyMedia runs as root on the NSLU2 so I would think that it has
permission to view anything...

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what I may need to do?

If you plug current-using devices into your other existing port or any
of the 2 extra ports, then you may find that 0.5A is not enough capacity
to drive both the NSLU2 and those USB bus-powered devices.

Indications of this happening are spontaneous reboots of the NSLU2, or
corruption of flash drives when writing.

Yes - an excellent set of slides and it would have been good to have
been there. The comment regarding the end of NSLU2 production seems so
sad! They are still available from online UK suppliers (Dabs, Ebuyer,
Amazon) and no doubt will appear on Ebay for years to come, but I
suppose my three slugs are more than enough ;-)

Anyone has a recommendation for choosing a good usb-ethernet device?
at the moment i'm looking at a RTL8150 based (e.g. Sitecom LN-013)

tried to find any question about usb ethernet to no avail in this forum..
i also checked http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nslu2-linux/ to no avail
:/ ..

i found about usb-ethernet device support from nslu2's page
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Peripherals/EthernetAdapter?from=HowTo.AddEthern\

and I dont have any usb-ethernet devices, so any link to
another forum page relevant to this question or product page would be
helpful.. as the hardest point right now is not setting up an nslu on

Yeah, one of the other big problems is knowing what the manufacturer put
in the package that they sold. One of the things to watch for is that
some of the common mfgrs (Linksys for one) have been known to simply
switch the entire chipset in the USB ethernet adapter with no product
re-marking or re-labeling.

SlugOS will be able to handle any USB devices supported by the stock
Linksys kernel up to 2.6.18 or so. If you are running Unslung, you are
extremely limited. If you can build the most recent SlugOS releases
yourself, you can probably use any adapter supported by Linux. So it
would be helpful to know a little bit of information, such as what
firmware you intend to use...

I also had this problem after upgrading from 3.0.x to 3.2.0 with my
Unslung NSLU2. And this fix worked for me, unsure why this is needed
because the earlier version would work quite happily without specifying
any interfaces. Note that I run my system on a different sub net
192.168.2.0. My interfaces line is :-

interfaces = 192.168.2.77/24, ixp0, lo

Will add this to the relevant Wiki page later tonight.

Hi,

I have my WD disk spinning down correctly on unslung. Make sure you
follow the instructions to put /var and /dev on ram disk. Also, my
disks spin down themselves when inactive, so I do not need to send any
commands from the slug. All I need to do is make sure the Slug does
not access the disk.

As a streaming player I have 2 Pinnacle Soundbridges, in the US I
think they are from Roku. I think they may have been discontinued
though. They support WPA, but I use them wired. In Europe they have
been replaced by a later model which I believe looks the same, but has
a lot less features. So read the product specs. The ones I have work
with Twonkyvision or firefly on the Slug.

Cheers Brian

I hate vi i think that is the editor available, can i use gedit on my
linux desktop to save the script and then use ftp client filezilla to
copy it to the required dir in the slug. Then i could ssh into the slug
and cange the attributes of the script, will this work ,i am a newbie.
How did you do it.

Hello,

I've been trying to get samba3 up on my Unslung 6.8 slug for a while
and can't get it working. I implemented the change to the interfaces
line, but this doesn't seem to help.

I have even tried a very basic config file (per the samba site) with
the following basic setup:

[global]
workgroup = MSHOME
netbios name = nslu2
interfaces = 192.168.1.77/24, ixp0, lo
[share1]
path = /share/hdd/data

and still I can't access the share, even using smbclient on the slug:

# smbclient -L localhost
protocol negotiation failed
#

If I use the second "working" configuration on the wiki page
(http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/Samba), with the single
modification of adding the interfaces = 192.168.1.77/24, ixp0, lo line
to the configuration, I get the following from smbclient:

# smbclient -L localhost
Connection to localhost failed (Error NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME)
#

In my samba log file (/opt/var/samba/log.smbd) there are a few errors
about primtcap and several "transport endpoint is not coneected"
errors, in addition to a couple of others:

# cat log.smbd

To begin configuring my NSLU2 out of the box I plugged it into the
ethernet port on my Apple Macbook Pro and hoped to be able to view its
web interface, but I can't find the proper address for the device.

I want to stick the debian firmware bootloader on it, but can't see
the web interface at all.

The apple is configured to share its airport internet connection with
devices on its ethernet connection (a configuration which allows e.g.
an ubuntu machine to get internet connection and also be addressable
from the mac).

However, the Slug's default interaction with the ethernet port doesn't
seem to get it a valid address, or at least one that I can use via
http://x.x.x.x:80.

http://192.168.1.77 doesn't serve any pages at all (when loaded in
Firefox on the host Macbook Pro. Monitoring /var/log/system.log shows
up errors about address assignment like...

Jul 9 10:56:25 Tabletto mDNSResponder[24]: setsockopt -
IP_MULTICAST_IF error 169.254.66.119 -1 errno 49 (Can't assign
requested address)

...which I guess might be related.

Any ideas what I need to do to the Macbook Pro network sharing
configuration so I can get to see the Slug's admin interface? I've
tried killing and relaunching natd with various different options to
permit the slug to be addressable but no luck so far.

Alternatively is there another reliable way to address it, or make it
use DHCP to pick up a valid address for this network configuration.

<Snip>
The printcap error is because Samba is trying to open a non existent
file. Easily fixed by creating a blank file by logging in as root at a
console prompt :-

touch /opt/etc/printcap

chmod 0644 /opt/etc/printcap
