In regards to the specifics of the read-only without level conversion, this
will need a voltage level converter to work. If you don't, you may damage
the buffer or IO cell pad by continually trying to have the pad source
voltage to compensate for the below-ground TTL input at steady state.

I was thinking that it may be possible to use a series diode and a 3k
pull-down to ground to keep noise away, along with a voltage divider for
12V to 3.3V level conversion. That may work.

Here's another idea not yet on the Wiki but I'm pretty sure that it works:
http://www.botkin.org/dale/rs232_interface.htm

Here's another idea that should work but I don't have a way to test it.
Please excuse my crude MS-Paint drawing but it should suffice. The diode
is to simply block the below-ground voltage levels (which is where the
5-10k resistor pull-down helps). The voltage divider gets 4.0V to the
diode input, and diodes usually have a 0.7V drop, which then would get 3.3V
to the TTL input.

Regards,
   -Rob

Maybe this will help. I have a couple of posts that talk about virtual hosts on
lighttpd. The topic isn't explicitly vhosts but following these I do have 2
virtual hosts on my pogoplug.

I used to have an Acer Revo (N230 based) as well.  However, it always consume
more than 10-12 watts even when it is idle.  Unless your Revo is based on an
different processor, I don't think it is possible to consume only 4 watts.

Running Python successfully was one of the primary reasons I got an NSLU2
in the first place, 4 years ago (I wanted pytivo running from my Slug to
share music with my TiVos). It has run flawlessly with Python 2.4.x and
2.5.x. Newer ipkgs exist, though I've had no reason to upgrade to them.
I've also successfully run PIL 1.1.6 without any problems.

In short: the Slug is a very adequate Python box. Highly recommended.

I run Client175 (http://code.google.com/p/client175/) on my Slug. Its basically
an mpd client that plays out music from a sound card hooked up to the NSLU2 via
a USB hub. It runs rather well, takes up about 20% CPU but there is no
discernible degradation in sound quality.I've since moved to Debian Squeeze and
it works as well on this OS too (right out of the box).

Subject: Unable to download large files (+1GB) via web interface.

Send Email Send Email

Hi,

I have encountered a strange bug or "feature" when attempting to download files
from a USB drive connected to an NSLU onto an Andriod tablet via the Linksys
NSLU web interface. I have searched wikis, forums and FAQs on several sites
including nslu2-linux.org but have yet to find an answer to this issue.

First some background, as stated I am trying to download movie files from an
external HD attached to an unslung slug to view on an ZT-180 Android tablet
running 2.2.

I browse to the NSLU web portal and then to the network share and drill down to
the avi or mp4 movie file I want. A long click on the chosen file and then I
select `Save Link' and then OK to `Save as:'

Most times this results in the movie file downloading onto the tablet. Most
files copy down onto the table just fine, but as I've started to do this more
often in recent weeks (grab a movie to watch in bed on the tablet or when
commuting) I've begun to encounter the following issue.

After I select Save As.

The next screen displays:

Download History

<Unknown>
192.168.1.77
Download unsuccessful.

And I'm left with a 1KB file. This appears to happen only with files over 1GB,
other movie files I have are 700-900MB and download fine.

I manage the content of the HD through Nautilus 2.32 on a Linux netbook and for
the most part the drive is used as a samba server delivering content wirelessly
to an XBMC Live setup. It has been performing this task flawlessly for nearly a
year now.

However on my android tablet I have to browse to the web interface for the NSLU
and from there onto the shares in order to copy a movie onto the tablet. I have
do it this way on the tablet as Android is unable to authenticate to the NSLU
shares through ES File Share or Astro file manager or any other SMB app I've
tried on the tablet.

I think this is due to the fact I do not know the user password for the disk, I
am not asked for this on any other PC I have but on the tablet the login prompt
ALWAYS appears. I cannot create a new user account on the NSLU as the two 1TB
drives attached are formatted as FAT32 and each is nearly half full, so I'm not
reformatting them to EXT3 just to be able to create a new user on the NSLU.

As I said most files copy down onto the tablet just fine, I've only discovered
this issue in the last few weeks as I've started to use the tablet more for
watching movies.

Some basic troubleshooting steps I've done myself have been to try replicating
this with other browsers and on different devices and OS. So far I have
replicated this issue on the Tablet with the following browsers:

Android stock browser,
Dolphin,
Skyfire,
Firefox,
Opera (does not offer "Save Link" option).

I have also replicated it under Linuxmint 10 using:
Chrome
Firefox

And also under Windows 7 using:
Chrome
IE9

This would lead me to conclude that there is a limit to the file size one can
copy from the web interface of the NSLU?

Can anyone shed light on this or give a definitive answer, and if so can this be
worked around or altered.

Thanks for reading,

Mike.

Hmmm. I wasn't even aware slugOS has a web interface. I use Debian on my
NSLU2, but I do have some of the packages on my router. No web interface
however. I would suggest trying another transfer protocol to transfer files.
The actual limit for FAT32 is 4GiB files, so you aren't hitting a file system
limit. Some programs have bugs at the 2GiB limit because the used signed
instead of unsigned integers to keep track of the position in file. I don't
know of any limits that hit at 1GiB, but that is not to say they don't exist.
Typically the code for a web-interface is the least tested, so that is where you
are most likely to find a bug.

He's not running SlugOS. He is using Unslung maybe 6.10-beta if he has been
updating which corresponds to Linksys V2.3R63 firmware. If I remember (which
has been a while and I'm not good at it), I did have problems with large file
transfers with that so I tried the Stock v2.3R76 (v2.3R73 was still messing up)
under the files section of this group and was able to transfer an 80 Gb disk
image file to an NTFS formatted drive that took over a day. Of course, the
other possibilities are to install either some other firmware like Debian,
SlugOS, or OpenWrt with Samba3 (Samba2 had issues). To get it all into firmware
so that you can use non-ext drives on both ports, you could do a minimal install
of OpenWrt with Samba. Or, add a hub with the other distro firmware on a USB
stick.

Hi,

Oddballhero is correct, sorry I should have included that info with my original
post, The slug is running V2.3R63-uNSLUng-6.10-beta.

As mentioned its performing flawlessly to my main XBMC Live PC so I really don't
want to mess with it much.

With RE: to your suggestions of adding a hub with another distro firmware on a
USB stick... I feel this problem isn't so big a bump in the road as to merit
that much investment, but it is never the less a good option.

Currently when I encounter this issue I just take the micro SD card out of the
tablet and use an adapter to connect it to another PC and copy the movie onto
the SD card directly. Its not as seamless or harmonious but it works.

I just wondered if any minds on here brighter than mine had encountered this
'issue' in the past or knew of the actual operating specs of the NSLU and
perhaps had resolved or formulated a work around solution more elegant than
mine.

transfers with that so I tried the Stock v2.3R76 (v2.3R73 was still messing up)
under the files section of this group and was able to transfer an 80 Gb disk
image file to an NTFS formatted drive that took over a day.
Or, add a hub with the other distro firmware on a USB
stick.

Mike,
This is not a limitation of NSLU2, but this is a standard HTTP limit: max 1GB.
Use another method, like FTP or SAMBA to transfer files larger than 1GB.

I believe the limit varies from server to server and even browser to browser.
But, in the case of NSlU2 that is probably the web server limit. In any case
the suggestion presented by Loek is correct. That is why I mentioned Samba3
earlier, instead of the current Samba. Which will probably take care of the SMB
connect problems:

Gents,

With further delving into the workings of Astro file manager I found some
advanced settings. By adding the two property keys below to the samba connection
the Android tablet can now connect to the share without requiring
authentication.

Key: jcifs.smb.ImCompatibility
Value: 0

Key: jcifs.smb.client.useExtendedSecurity
Value: false

Problem solved!!!

Many thanks for your assistance with this, and to Loek for clarifying the root
cause.

Regards,

Mike

I have a stock NSLU2 V2.3R63 Formatted drive. EXT3

I want to be able to take that drive and connect it directly to my PC to
copy a large batch of files.
However when I plug it to my Linux box I only have READ access. I cannot
create folders and files.
Those menu choices are grey'd out.
Coping 300 gigs of music and photo's thru the network is gruelingly SLOW!
I am running UBUNTU 10.4
I am a novice when it comes to issuing commands in Linux. So any help would
be appreciated.

p.s.

I know there is a newer firmware version and that its hard to find. Do I
really need it.
Does it fix anything I should be concerned with. I am simply using the NSLU2
as a NAS
to serve my media content to an HTPC in my Living Room using W7MCE.
I want menu driven control of the NSLU2 so am not really looking to change
firmware to
unslung or any of that other stuff at this point.

That seems to be your main problem. I assume you're using GUI. Either:
- login as root (if you've set the password), or
- open terminal (menu -> accessories -> terminal), type "gksu nautilus"

OK

In terminal I typed gksu nautilus.... Now what. I still cant write to the
External Hard Drive. Is what your telling me to do only the first step or what?
Theres got to be more to it.
I would assume the drive has access rights created by the NSLU2 that are
preventing me from mounting the drive read/write.

I am logged into UBUNTU with my administrator account. I have full access. Just
not on the NSLU2 formatted hard drive.

Did a new nautilus (a.k.a "file manager") window show up?

You should. Since the nautilus you opened has root privileges. But
only in that particular window.

That's what "gksu" is for.

There are cases when a drive is force-mounted read-only, like when it
has unrecoverable errors. I can't think of any "newbie-friendly" way
to test or fix it though. My best advice at this point:
- make sure you try the operation (copy, etc.) from the gksu-ed
window, not from your normal nautilus window
- type "mount" from your terminal window, make sure the drive is not
mounted read-only for some reason. And make sure it's ext3 (instead of
some read-only fileystem like squashfs or whatever)
- get your local linux expert (or at least, someone who knows about
filesystems and permissions) to help

Skip my last reply. I am in as root and now can write to the NSLU2 drive.

Next stupid question.... Is there a way to make my origional account able to
write to this drive without having to login as root?

Yes, but it's not recommended.

See:
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chown

a relatively "safe" way (maybe. I never tested it on nslu) is to run
chown or chmod only on the directory you're interested in. Something
like:
- chown -R your_username /media/nslu-drive/path/to/where/your/folders/will/be
- chmod -R 777 /media/nslu-drive/path/to/where/your/folders/will/be

The key here is to ONLY change owner or permission of a particular
folder, NOT the whole nslu drive.

So, I can't ssh into my dockstar, I can't even ping it. We've had a few power
hits lately but the dockstar was on UPS. The light on the front turns solid
green, after a reset, but its not reachable.

I had been running the original openpogo software and the flash drive seems
okay. I've tried accessing the dockstar with and without the flash drive
inserted. I've changed network cables, and I've moved the dockstar to a port on
a different switch. Am I missing anything else worth trying?

Well Bruce,
If it is fried, its kinda strange to have a solid green light. If you unplug it
without the flash drive (so it does not get corrupted) and with the network
disconnected, does it still come up with a solid green light? If it does not,
then you ruled out the boot process and the network interface. Then it may have
changed IP address (I'm assuming you are still running the native udhcpc and not
placed a fixed IP), which is why you cannot ping or use ssh. You also may have
just been updated by Cloud Engines with the new firmware for large drives (like
the pro) and need to use their interface to re-setup ssh access.

I don't have any suggestions what should be done further.  I guess the only way
to find out is to use CA-42 serial cable.

Hello All,
I have a Seagate GoFlex Home Plug, which essentially is a dockstar
variation. I am thinking about attaching a USB bluetooth dongle to it
and making it be able to communicate with Panasonic Link-to-Cell
Cordless Phone. Apparently it doesn't have any bluetooth drivers
installed. I have to do it all by myself. Now, I have optware on it.
My questions are
1) Which brands/models USB bluetooth dongles does this dockstar support?
Broadcom chipset based?2) Where can I find those workable USB drivers?
Is there any Linux USB driver repository?
Any clues? Your any help is greatly appreciated!
TIA,S.
