Hi all,
I am a newbie and need your help. Sorry for my poor english too.

I have a NLSU2 with the unslung firmware (V2.3R63-uNSLUng-6.8-beta), I
have updated yesterday.
I have unslunged to an usb bar connected on port USB2. Flash and
unslung worked well.
NLSU2 boot ok and access on webadmin and telnet are ok. access to all
my drives is ok and worked well. yesterday I have copied and deleted
files from HDD without errors.

My problem is that, today, my HDD connected on port1 now appear Not
Formatted after a reboot.
If my plug the HDD to my computer, I can manage the files without
errors. Replug on NSLU2 and HDD appear not formated.

Can you help me ?

Hi,

have you enabled a swap space ?
I have encountered several problems with aborting programs due to a
memory shortage.

Thanks for youre reply.
I'm runing OpenSlug from flash stick. I inited it with turnup memstick
command. I think there is no swap space. The memory info is next with
top command when I copied files.
Mem: 28992K used, 1308K free, 0K shrd, 7152K buff, 6256K cached
I opened the case and let it is running 'naked' today. I is working
pretty good when I copy files to it. May it cuased by over heat? It is
hot in here, room temperature is 30C.

Hi,

Done. It looks like the links I've added need to be approved.

Btw, the "Preview" button did not work. I had no choice but to save directly.
Fortunately, it looks ok.

Just an update.

Using dd in this manner does not work for me as it copies the data
block for block and re-creates the partition layout of the original
disk.

Looks like I'll have to start a fresh OpenDebianSlug install with
some sort of RAID installed.

Well I didn't know much about locales when I started this, but I know
a bit more now. Due to the second installation attempt only having a
swap of 32MB, instead of 96MB for the first attempt, locale-gen was
dying with an OOM when trying to generate any UTF8 locales.
Adding more swap space allows it to complete OK, I saw that it was
using up to 67 MB swap during the gen.

Now I have the locale set correctly and all is OK.

Cheers Brian

This has been a problem for a long time. If I recall correctly,
Preview only works with Internet Explorer.

I have tried to understand why, but I have been prevented by some sort
of anti-hacking technology; when I try to download the Javascript that
the edit page uses, I get this:

<html>
    <head>
      <title>Forbidden</title>
    </head>
    <body>
      <h1>Forbidden</h1>

      <p>
Don't do that okay? Trying to download the entire website is not
welcome.
      </p>
    </body>
</html>

If someone could switch that off I would investigate further.

Regards,

Phil.

Hi,

nice to hear that your SLUG is running fine when the case is open.
Looks indeed like a temperature problem.
Nevertheless I would recommend to enable a swap space for your system,
which is not the case yet.

You can use chown

It accepts a command-line of the form:

    chown [-R] <username>[.<groupname>] <your_file_name(s)>

So you could use:

    chown root.everyone your_file_name

Hi,

I have an Unslung 6.8 slug. I can chown but can't chgrp.

The file has been changed to be owned by guest but the group ownership
is root. I think i need to change it to "everyone".

Any ideas how to do this without chgrp? I tried searching but no luck
so don't think it's a path issue....

Cheers, Chris.

Try:
ipkg update
ipkg install coreutils

So that i can download in non-peak times without leaving my PC on.

What's the best way of going about this?
i.e. which firnware/OS, which client? any other tips?

I implemented the above steps on my slug, now it does not show up on
the network any more. The one thing I added was making each of the
two new script executable: "chmod +x init.d" for example.

I'm not entirely sure how to recover it. I'm going to assume I
unplug the USB drives, boot, login then plug them back in to edit the
files. Maybe I'll give that a shot next.

Hi,

I am currently using a manually bootstraped Debian (DebianSlug/LE)
mounting the rootfs over NFS. There are several upgrade procedures to
Debian/NSLU2 (etch) available (e.g. on
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/), but all assume the rootfs on a
external disk (usually /dev/sda1) and provide a special image for this
case. The etch installer on the other hand does not support an
installation to a NFS partition (not surprising). Does anyone has an
idea on

(a) how to do an upgrade using the existing NFS partition (in this
case an appropriate firmware image is needed, not assuming rootfs on
/dev/sda1)

(b) how to change the apex configuration of a Debian/NSLU2
installation to boot from a NFS partition (I already have a slug with
an installation on a USB stick for playing).

Thanks,
Matthias

Hello group,

This is my first post on the list :)
I´ve had a slug for quite a few time, but it´s just been a couple days since I
entered this list.

I recently bought a 320GB drive for my slug, so now I´m thinking on doing a
backup solution for the computers I have in my house. Right now there are 3 PCs
(windows & linux) and I´d like to make this as automated and invisible as
possible.
What is the best route to follow? Rsync? Are there any backup solution software
that may work with the slug?

BTW, Right now I´m running SlugOS/LE 3.10 Beta on top of a turboslug...

Hi,
There is actually a thread on this already. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be
resolved and
I am having exactly the same problem so I thought I'd try again.

Anyway, I have a Belkin Wireless USB stick for my slug. It's version 3 so uses
the RT73
chipset. I downloaded the RT2x00 source, compiled and installed it along with
firmware. It
set up ok and I can ssh in to slug over wireless.

The problem starts when I try and then unplug the ethernet cable. As soon as I
do that I
cannot ping the slug on either ethernet (obviously) nor wireless lan.

Does anyone have any ideas as I'm sure it must just be a config issue. I'm
pretty new to
linux so hopefully it's something obvious...

Many thanks,
Euan

Does this happen to anyone else, and if so, how can I get around it?

I have been successfully using Unslung 6.8 and Firefly music server
for some months now. Today, an application (iBridge) used to control
my music streamer somehow caused my firefly installation to stop
working. While debugging it, the slug stopped booting from the hard
disk. It powers up but hours later the ready light is still not on
and the unit cannot be accessed. I can boot without disks and login.
At that point I can attach the disks and they are recognized and the
data is still there. However I cannot boot into an unslung mode with
disks attached. My configuration is: NSLU2 formatted Maxtor drive on
Disk 2 used for unslung and firefly server. NTFS formatted Maxtor
drive on Disk 1. Any help getting this back on-line is appreciated.

There's the root cause. You cannot have a single system have two interfaces
on the same network, even if the two use different types of media. There's
nothing in the Linux kernel that prevents you from doing this, but it
generally plays havoc with your routing tables, and confuses DHCP servers
and DNS servers, and results in generally unpredictable behavior when one of
the interfaces fails or is disabled.

So, you have two choices: either split your network into two distinct
subnets, one for wired and one for wireless, or you must arrange that only
one is active at a time.

The latter is actually easy to do. Just remote the "auto wlan0" line or the
"auto eth0" line, whichever interface you don't want started at boot. Then
when you switch, you need to execute something line "ifdown eth0; sleep 5;
ifup wlan0". Since your ssh session will die, you'll need to do that in the
background via something like "nohup". You might be able to get away
without the pause in-between, but I'd start with that just to give various
services a chance to die if they are going to do so.

That makes debugging particularly hard. A serial console is very helpful.
See the wiki for how to add one, it requires a bit of soldering. Since you
really don't need to see the boot messages, just be able to survive a
network shutdown and startup, you can also add a serial port via a
USB->serial adaptor, and start a login session on that serial adaptor. That
way you can issue the commands from a direct login session to debug things.

The two-network thing will allow you to split the network, so that you can
have both interfaces running at the same time. The routing table determines
which interface is used for what traffic, giving you some control over how
things are working.

Which raises an interesting point --- are you SURE that the wireless port is
working? Since BOTH ports are on the same network, how do you know that
packets are flowing over the wireless at all?

I've worked on this in the past -- the sequence above will work just fine.
However, I don't use that anymore, I use dual networks for development work.
In addition to allowing me to run both interfaces simultaneously, it also
allows me to get the wireless card (in my case a zd1211 card) working with
the simpler WEP security on an isolated wireless subnet, while leaving the
main wireless network running WPA.

You need to provide a little more information, like where in the
installation the installer fails.

My guess, based on your setup is that it fails when partitioning. If
so, are you using partman in the guided partitioning mode? My guess is
that you are not, and if so, could you try the default guided
partition scheme (all mounts on one partition). Also, if the install
is failing during partitioning, could you post the partition scheme
you are trying to use.

Get yourself one of the "live" Linux CDs and experiment on your PC.
When you have something that works, try to set it up on your Slug. If
you use a Debian-like Live CD and install Debian on your Slug, the
available packages will be the same.

Good luck,

Phil.

In my case, I installed to a flash drive (sda1), removed the flash
drive from the NSLU2 and plugged it in to the fileserver where it is
mounted as /slugroot and NFS-exported.

I had to make some minor changes e.g. editting /etc/fstab, but it was
nothing complicated.

> (b) how to change the apex configuration of a Debian/NSLU2

Well what do you really mean here? I don't think that anyone has got
their Slug to actually boot (i.e. load its kernel) across the network,
though there may be support for that in some future version of APEX
(someone please correct me if I'm wrong). So the kernel is still in
the Slug's flash. Then, in a default Debian install you will have a
large initramfs also stored in the internal flash. This initramfs
contains lots of modules and the Intel network microcode and I believe
that it is sufficient to mount the eventual root partition over NFS;
all that you need to do is to pass the right kernel command line
parameters. There is Wiki documentation describing how to change the
command line that APEX passes to the kernel.

If you want to boot without the initramfs for some reason it all gets
more complex, mostly because of the microcode. If you really want to
do this, tell me why and I'll write some more.

(One thing that I have not yet got to work is having multiple slugs use
the same NFS-mounted read-only root filesystem. Has anyone done that?)

Regards,

Phil.

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

Its doesn't seem to work if I use guided (which creates a very small
swap) or manual setup. I am trying to create a 512MB swap and a ext3
filesystem that files the rest of the 8GB stick.

I can post exact details when tonite.

Have you tried "File -> Save Page As..." (from Firefox, although I'm
sure other browsers have a similar choice) while you're in the wiki

When mine kept dying, during partitioning, I couldn't get past it. So
I partitioned the drive on a Kanotix PC and formatted the partitions
to EXT3 and swap. Then started the reinstall again, when it got to the
partitioning questions,I did the mount point bits and saved the data
to the drive etc., then I hit the "back" button and then just went
through all the options in the installer window, install base system,
create users etc. So apart from setting the mount points I bypassed
the partitioner.

It went perfectly then.

Cheers Brian
