The squeezecenter ipk is now in optware feeds. Since
slimserver/squeezecenter requires quite a lot of RAM, it's best suited
on >=64MB optware target devices. I've tested it on Synology ds207+
(128MB), ds408 (512MB) and HP mv2120 (128MB) and seems to run ok.

For those interested, here is the installation instruction:

1. setup optware ipkg

2. ipkg update

3. ipkg install squeezecenter
(good idea to change mysql root password upon first install)

4. optware mysql 4.1.22 was configured --without-innodb to save
memory, so we need to comment out lines that uses transaction.

# ipkg install sed
# cd /opt/share/squeezecenter
# sed -i.orig -e '/^ .*dbh->STORE.*AutoCommit.*0/s/^/#/' CPAN/DBI.pm
# sed -i.orig -e '/^ *Slim::Schema->storage->dbh->{\'AutoCommit\'} =
0/s/^/#/' scanner.pl Slim/Schema/Playlist.pm Slim/Music/Import.pm

5. /opt/etc/init.d/S99squeezecenter start

6. point your browser to http://optware-device-IP-address:9000

I know that there's also squeezecenter 7.1 source release, it's pretty
easy to change optware/squeezecenter.mk. But squeezebox firmware
downloading directory at
http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/ does not have the
required binaries, only jive stuff.

Anyway, NAS + squeezebox seems a very good combination.

Cheers,

-Brian

How did you set the network settings on the NSLU2 before you flashed the
Debian image? Did you set a complete set of network settings (including
gateway and DNS) using the Linksys web interface? Were you running
Unslung or SlugOS previously?

Hi,

I did something stupid and I do hope that you can help me.

I am using an unslung NSLU2 and and external HDD (USB) for backup.
Last time I did copy so much on the HDD that there is no space left
and switched the NSLU2 off after the backup.

Now I cannot reach the NSLU2 any more. As I do use windows XP, I did
use "explore2fs" to get access to the HDD , but I can just read with
this software. With "Ext2IFS" I cannot access the HDD at all.

Can you help me and tell me, how to delete files from the HDD? When
this is done, I hope that I will access the NSLU2 again.

Or is there no software for windows with which I can delete files from
an ext3 partition?

Best regards,
Zeddichus

If i resume, you need to access in write to an EXT3 partition ?

Then simply use a live cd of ubuntu for exemple.
You get the live cd (700Mo from ubuntu web site), burn it, boot on it your windows computer,
and access your disk in write access .

The live CD do not modify your windows boot disk. You have no risk on it.

This is the place for user questions about the nslu2 supported
software. If you want to run perl on a platform which is supported
by optware or you run one of the firmwares from nslu2-linux then
this is the right place.

Have a look at the optware package build environment.
There is already a perl 5.8.8 package in there:
	 http://svn.nslu2-linux.org/svnroot/optware/trunk/make/perl.mk

You could try to change the options and see if it builds and works.

There is a page how to build packages from this environment:
	 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/AddAPackageToOptware

Use the optware build environment if you can install optware
packages!

I think so because the plain SlugOS (without attached drives where ive
installed Debian) uses the same network config.

How can i get the network configuration which is stored in flash? I did
not found this information at the moment.

I dont know, it is a long time ago and ive used the web interface only
to flash another image.

17:32:03 UTC 2007 armv5tel GNU/Linux and a debian LE with bootstrap.

I have CUPS working on my slug running 5.x. I followed the
instructions at:

   http://www.nslu2-linux.org

Search for "printer" and you can see which of the "Add a printer"
HOWTOs might work for you. One of them seems to imply broken behavior.

Sorry this may not have been completely helpful, but the good news is
CUPS *can* work fine for a USB printer on a slug. I'm running a
single Samsung ML-1740 laser printer.

It's worth noting that I still install Samsung's Universal printer
driver on my workstations. Why? I figure the slug just doesn't have
enough memory and processing power (aka, "oomph") to handle
full-fledged foomatic processing for CUPS. So it's basically
configured as a "raw" printer, and I let the client systems do the
appropriate formatting.

Good luck,
-Del

I have uNLSUng linux running on my NSLU2.

My NSLU2 has been upgraded to 266 Mhz.

I solved the write frequency problem by using a compact flash to usb adapter and installing an IBM 1 gig microdrive to unsling to.

I have a problem whether running unslung or not. When I power down the NSLU2 and come back later to boot it, it fails to boot. The System Ready/Status light stays yellow and my ethernet light stays green. I have left it and it will sit there for hours with no change.

Yet if I power cycle and start the unit it boots fine.

I have flashed back to linksys firmware and never see the problem. It boots every time.

Is this a common problem ?
Is there a fix for this ?

Also in the same lines is there a way to make the system boot faster ?

I run this system from a battery supply, and no I have a computer grade power regulator
to regulate the voltage to the NSLU2.

The boot problem happens with battery or AC.

I run this system coupled to a 2.5 inch 250 gig usb hard drive and a proxim mini access point.

I carry it into a room and use it as wireless shared storage for other systems in the room.

I can get it to run close to 5 hours from battery with about 20 users connected.

I am running unslung because I have a custom logging program that tracts individual users,
they normally can only read from the device, allows them to upload their assignments to
individual folders. Once the work is completed and turned in, I allow the users to run games
from the server. You would be surprised how complete the turn in rate is when there is incentive. The games are also educational and interactive and they do not know that I track
their progress even in the games.

I would love to solve this problem and if possible make it boot faster.

Thank you

You probably need to specify a larger mount delay for the microdrive to
spin up - it will be slower than a flash disk.

Problem happens with or without the disk. It will happen even if I
unplug the usb cable to the disk. It happens even when I use a high
grade usb stick also.

I'm a bit confused at this point - can you clarify a few points? You
say you have a problem whether running unslung or not, and then you say
that you don't see the problem when you flash back to linksys firmware?

The procedure you describe doesn't seem to be different -- in both cases
you power it down. Is the problem that it fails to boot if you leave it
powered off for a while, and it boots ok if you immediately power-cycle
it? Also, how do you initiate the power-cycle for each case (web
interface, power button, command line, pull-the-plug)?

> Is this a common problem ?

No.

> Is there a fix for this ?

I don't know; we need more information.

> Also in the same lines is there a way to make the system boot faster ?

Certainly. There are a number of things that the Linksys firmware does
that can be removed, or streamlined in all probability. In order to do
so, you would almost certainly need a serial console on the device. See
the wiki for information on how to add this.

The first step is to determine the current boot time you're seeing, and
establish a goal for what you require it to be -- and based on that
you'll have to start looking at where the boot time is being spent. One
area that will be very tricky is the mounting of the drive's partitions
at boot; that's handled by Linksys code for which we have no source --
so there's little that can be done about that part of it. However,
other steps can be skipped, or deferred -- the web browser, quota
enabling (although I think that's already deferred). Another area to
examine would be the boot-time delay that's built in where Unslung waits
for the drive(s) to become ready during boot; this is tricky as many
devices have two times that they present -- one at first power-up, and
another (usually faster) if the device is already initialized and
spun-up. So if you're not careful, you can "tune" the timeout so that
it reboots very quickly -- but won't boot to unslung mode when it boots
from a power-off state.

For my school I need a small machine that can ring a bell or play a
sound - ring the recess and school start end end bells.

last year I let them use one of my old windows laptops. But I want
something that is less worry and can't be messed with.

I found a usb sound device that is supposed to work with linux.

now, what firmware would be best for a purpose like this?
Then I need to write a web page that can add or remove cron jobs so that
we can change the bell ring times if needed.
The network the at the school is only 2 teacher laptops and this device.
- No access to the internet so security will not be an issue.

Has anyone here done a project like this before?

I tried to look for the reason why these files get created since I
upgraded to samba 3.2. Searching the web I found the info [1] that one
should add

veto files = /*.Zone.Identifier:*/

to the GLOBAL section in samba config file, but frankly this looks
more like a workaround to me!?

When looking at the samba 3.2 release notes I guess this behavior had
been introced by one of the two features?

o Support for storing alternate data streams in xattrs.
o Encrypted SMB transport in client tools and libraries, and server.

Unfortunately the Search function is currently not working on the
samba.org site(s).

Hi,

I'm new to all of this even though I'd unslung my NSLU2 2 1/2 years ago.

The version of unslung that I'm using is v5.5
(v.2.3R29-uNSLUng-5.5-beta) and I'd like to be able to use my NSLU2 as
a low-power web-server for a personal web-page however I'm afraid that
I do not know what exactly needs to be done in order to do this.

I've installed Apache via ipkg install apache and confirmed that the
Apache holding page appears on http:192.168.1.x:8000 but this is where
I'm now stuck/confused as to what needs to be done next.

I'm unable to telnet into my Slug for some reason or another even
though telnet has been switched on via /Management/telnet.cgi

I'd like to know what needs to be installed exactly and how I can go
about FTP'ing to my NSLU2 (that is if FTP'ing is recommended).

Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Please bear with me as I am
an NSLU2 and Linux newbie.

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for the problem report and investigation.

Samba 3.2.1 has just been released and supposedly include this fix. I
upgraded optware samba package to 3.2.1 after testing that I can
connect to a share on unslung. It probably would take a few hours
before the new ipk reach the feed.

Cheers,

The boot problem occurs when I have the system running and either tell
the system to shutdown or I press the front panel button.

I leave the wall mount transformer plugged into the unit and come back
later or the next day to boot.

I press the front panel button and the system hangs with the status
ready light at yellow and the network light at green.

I pull the power plug from the NSLU2 and plug it back in immediately
and press the front power button to start the system up. It then
continues a normal boot with no problems.

If I leave the power plug disconnected for an extended time, plug it
in and press the front power button to boot. It will hang with the
yellow/green status. Unplug and plug in the power and hit the front
panel switch it will boot properly.

If it occurred in stock linksys software I would then tend to believe it
would be in the reset circuit. But since it only happens in uNSLUng it
has me stymied.

When I said before it happened both slung and unslung I was saying
that it is not my external micro drive that is causing the problem.

Could it be the microdrive is taking time to spin-up? When Unslung, the drive isn't ready and the boot process hangs and never recovers. By powering off and on quickly and the drive is ready (having spun up on the failed boot process)?

You wouldn't see the problem with the Linksys firmware as it may not access the drive for booting up......

I'll upgrade transmission to 1.31 this weekend. From preliminary
testing, the setup procedure is much simpler with reduced dependencies.

Since optware removes old ipk from feed with newer ipk, it is
recommended for users to backup the working ipk's just in case.

Transmission 1.31 ipk is now in optware feeds. Since the configuration
file changed quite a bit, I have not setup /opt/etc/transmission.conf
and /opt/etc/init.d/Snntransmission in the ipk yet. But it's pretty
easy to use:

1. forward port 51413 to your NAS device;
2. ipkg install transmission;
3. as root, "/opt/bin/transmission-daemon" to launch the daemon;
4. point your browser to http://<NAS-address>:9091/transmission/web/ ;
5. "transmission-daemon -h" and "transmission-remote -h" to see more
options

Hello,

I am a pretty new at this myself, but I have the same requirements as
you describe, and have found myself a working solution.

I also investigated Apache, but I learned that it taxes system
resources pretty heavy. Considering the NSLU has limited resources I
decided to go for using the built in thttpd server instead. By
installing packages php-thttpd and php, although I think package php
is not necessary, the webserver handles both .cgi and .php pages.

It works very well, now my NSLU is running two web servers. The
default, providing the linksys interface is running at port 80, while
the one I defined is running at 8080. By using dynamic dns and
portmapping in my router, my website is available at port 80 from the
internet.

I think I used the following link for advice on how to set it up:
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/UseTheThttpdWebserver

To administer the NSLU I use openssh, much better than telnet; more
secure and you can use applications like nano too.

Hope this can be of some help

I am running Unslung V2.3R63-uNSLUng-6.8-beta

Best regards,

Hi, I am new here. I believe I have a problem with disk speed. I have
searched the forum here without finding what to do.

My slug runs the V2.3R63-uNSLUng-6.10-beta unslung to a 500 GB
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=333 Western Digital
Elements usb 2 disk.

I am copying 1.6 gb of data (13 folders , 913 files) from my Kubuntu machine
to the slug. Kubuntu shows that the copy preceeds at around 200 KB/s. Isn't
this awfully slow? What should I expect?

Copying data the other way seems to go at around 3 MB/s. Gratefull for any
hint that can help me to get proper speed.

Thanks,
Bjorn

thx for this. I was able to update my Slug with your update this
morning and everything looks fine, now.

thx & cheers

PS: the issue with SWAT persists: it still reports smbd and nmbd as
"not running" though it's properly listing the active connection &
shares and the open files.
