Hi,
I'm running atop v1.23 on a couple Ubuntu systems and both show CPU totals over 100%.
I believe that is the intended behavior.

from the atop man page:

       CPU  CPU utilization.
            At  least  one  line  is shown for the total occupation of all CPU’s

Ok, so does the failure for the percentages to tally up happen on any other
systems?

Is your desktop computer multi-core? If so do you observe the same behaviour
you've described with atop on that as you do on your QNAP?

This would help identify whether the error is with atop in general or the
specific build you are using.

Maybe it’s the intended behavior but is it the correct behavior?  If one line, CPU, is intended to show the numbers for all cpus, in other words an overall view of the system, how can a system be over 100% idle or busy or …? Maybe a new line should be added that shows the average.

I've just installed the latest package, perl_5.8.8-22_powerpc.ipk and get the

This is my first attempt at using OptWare and I would really like to get Perl
working! I've tried to find older packages but without any luck.

Hi,

For months I've been running NSLU2 (Unslung) with 2 disk configuration. Disk 1 & Disk 2. Disk 2 is my "main" disk, while Disk 1 port is connected to a USB Hub where my other drive is connected.

This configuration works fine, but last weekend I can't see Disk 1 any more. The disk is on but when I browse to /hdd2 it's empty.

I downloaded a Linux Live CD and connected that drive to my PC and I can see that the drive is not gone, I can see all my files.

Anyone has any ideas? I tried rebooting NSLU2 several times and still no luck.

Help ...

I suppose the drive is not mounted. You can check this by connecting to the
NSLU2 via telnet and using the command 'mount'. If the partition of this disk is
not in the list, then it's most probably because the partition is marked as
'dirty'.
I would put the disk to your Linux Live CD-system and do a fsck (or /sbin/e2fsck
/dev/sd?? if you do it on the NSLU2).

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. So this is the output command of "mount"

# mount
/dev/root on /initrd type jffs2 (rw)
/dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
usbdevfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbdevfs (rw)
/dev/sda1 on /share/flash/data type ext3 (rw)
/dev/sda2 on /share/flash/conf type ext3 (rw,sync)

I take it sda1 & sda2 are 2 different partition on my main disk?

So that will be /sbin/e2fsck /dev/sdb?

Another question, will it be safe for me to do this via the usb hub? Since the config on my box is

Disk 2 -> main disk
Disk 1 -> usb hub -> 2nd disk (where the content can't be seen no more)

Thanks,
Victor

Yes, /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 are tow partitions on the same disk.

I dont know how you have formatted your second disk, but I assume you used the
webGUI for it and therefore got two partitions on your second drive. So you have
to do a fsck on both of them:
/sbin/e2fsck /dev/sdb1
/sbin/e2fsck /dev/sdb2

I never used a usb hub for my disks, but I assume if it's a powered hub it
should be no problem to use it.

I don't see the cause, but maybe I can help you to find it:
Add to the end of your crontab line the following
  >/tmp/myLog.out 2>/tmp/myLog.err

By inspecting the two files after the defined time has passed you will most
probably find the problem.

Thanks,

It returns me this :
$ cat /tmp/myLog.err
/usr/lib/sendmail: No such file or directory
. . . message not sent.

And I have this in nail bin :
$strings /usr/bin/nail | grep sendmail
sendmail
/usr/lib/sendmail

But I don't understand why it works in shell.

Thank you for your help

I don't know 'nail', so I'm just guessing:
Nail tries to find sendmail in the path ($PATH) and if it's not found there then
in /usr/lib. So it looks like
1. your path ($PATH) is different from the crontab's, and
2. sendmail is not in /usr/lib, but maybe /usr/sbin

If nail has some configuration files, then you can probably set the
sendmail-location there, if not then you can extend $PATH in your bash-script.

Most likely your environment is different than the one of the user
running this cronjob
Therefore add an env debug statement to the crontab. Check your path to
the env binary.
It is /usr/bin/env linked to opt/bin/env on my slug

33 23 * * *  /opt/bin/env > 1>/tmp/env.log 2>&1

You will then use env in your shell and dump output again to a file
env 1>~/env.log 2>&1

then diff both files

diff /tmp/env/log ~/env.log

and you will see that e.g. your LD_LIBRARY_PATH and other settings differ.
You need to adjust you settings either inside the crontab or source and
environment inside cron prior to executing nail.

Once done remove the env line in cron.

Just to report that I have just had the same problem -- udev reassigning eth0 to
eth1 on upgrade to lenny.

Glad to find this post.

Commented out the udev rules, as suggested above, and on boot up it recreated a
new one to use eth0. Everything fine from then onwards.

From /var/log/syslog:
   Nov 22 23:06:30 debianslug kernel: [42949423.890000] eth0: MII PHY 1 on NPE-B
   Nov 22 23:06:30 debianslug kernel: [42949424.160000] udev: renamed network
interface eth0 to eth1

From 70-persistent-net.rules, after commenting out and rebooting:

# This file was automatically generated by the /lib/udev/write_net_rules
# program, probably run by the persistent-net-generator.rules rules file.
#
# You can modify it, as long as you keep each rule on a single line.
# MAC addresses must be written in lowercase.

# Unknown net device (/class/net/eth0) (ixp4xx_mac)
#SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:13:10:d6:1e:a7",
NAME="eth0"

# Unknown net device (/class/net/eth0) (ixp4xx_eth)
#SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",

ATTR{address}=="00:0f:66:7c:dd:11", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1",
KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0"

So, in summary, it looks like something from ipx4xx_mac is left behind. I think
that I have used this USB disk on both this and a spare (backup) NSLU2 with etch
installed. Unsure of exact history -- lovely thing about these things is that
you set them up and then they just work...
The only problem I've ever had was with a power supply failure. Replacement
from Maplins was fine.

Off topic - did the hardware mod. with an Atmel chip to auto power on after a
power cut (I live in a village where we get one a week). V. straightforward,
and well worth it.

fdisk -l /dev/sdb

or, if the linksys-modified fdisk doesn't work, you do:

busybox fdisk -l /dev/sdb

Well... perhaps if you explain a little more in depth what you want to DO with
your touch with regards to your slug?

"using a touch with the slug" can mean many many different things.

It's unclear whether you're talking about installing lighttpd on your slug, or
your touch, but it's simply a webserver... so I'm not sure how useful it would
be unless all you're talking about is viewing HTML content on one from the
other.

On my slugos 5.3 sendmail is in /usr/sbin. So try the following

# find / -name sendmail -print

if it show up in /usr/sbin/sendmail then do
   ln -s /usr/sbin/sendmail /usr/lib/sendmail

Replace /usr/sbin/sendmail with the path to the one you find. Then try again.

/usr/lib/sendmail is a "well known" location for sendmail and it's common for
even non-sendmail based mail systems put a fake one there so programs can find
it.

I don't have real differences between the two files, unless the PATH.
But adding PATH to my script doesn't change anything.
No LD_LIBRARY_PATH given in env.

I found a solution to bypass my problem thanks to tips of Marc and Roland.
1)My script worked in shell with user1 but not in crontab.
2)crontab is run by root.
3)When I used "su -" and excute the script I have the same error as in crontab:
"
/usr/lib/sendmail: No such file or directory
. . . message not sent.
"
4)So I added "/bin/su user1 -c" to my script :
33 23 * * * /bin/su user1 -c '/opt/bin/bash /temp/testmail/send_mail.sh'

And this is OK now !

5)I choose that way because I've got a bad feeling that "nail" checks for the
user (root or not root) and use sendmail !!!!

If someone understand what's happen, I am very interesting to know...

Thank You

Thanks for your help.
But I've already search in this way. Sendmail is not installed on my OpenSlug.
The command Find doesn't find anything.
It was the reason why I was surprise to see that nail looks for sendmail.

Not sure if it works with the PS3 but I had Wizd installed on my Slug for a
while and it streamed iso DVD images of across my wireless network to a
ShowCenter 200 just fine. I only abandoned this method because of the amount of
on-line storage capacity it required. I had 3 * 500GB connected and it wasn't
enough. So have now converted some 500+ DVD's to DivX, sure the quality isn't as
good but its good enough for watching on a 720p TV and means that my slug is
able to manage all my music, video and photos 24X7.

The only time it struggles is if I have 3 or more clients trying to access media
at the same time.

since usuallly (well at least the way I do it) I will actually mount an ISO that
I've got on my hard-drive (as though it were a physical DVD) and then watch it.

The error message: "/usr/lib/sendmail: No such file or directory" points to a
missing PATH to sendmail

I believe this is what happens now causing your script to run successfully. Your
command:
/bin/su user1 -c '/opt/bin/bash /temp/testmail/send_mail.sh'
causes user1 to use /opt/bin/bash as a shell.
If you have e.g. a .bash_profile in user1's $HOME this profile will be sourced
setting PATH variable and all the environment you have when you log in as user1.
This makes the shell and the cron environment match and e.g. PATH will be set
correctly.

I bet that you could run this as root as well if you source root's profile prior
to the command, like adding:

. ~/.bash_profile or
. ~/.profile (depends on which shell your root has) to your
script: /temp/testmail/send_mail.sh

and then edit crontab to:

33 23 * * * /temp/testmail/send_mail.sh

if user1's shell is /opt/bin/bash anyway, this [c|sh]ould work as well - no su
required:

33 23 * * * user1 /temp/testmail/send_mail.sh

I'm rebuilding an unslung system from a disk failure, looking for freeradius
1.1.7-2 - not quite ready to update to freeradius V2 - which is the current

Is the old .ipk file available somewhere? If not, is there a way to build it
from the source repository?

It would be good to have a HOWTO that describes how to get the build system to
to build a specific version of any package - if someone can give me the
necessary clues, I'll be happy to add to the wiki.

Thanks.

http://foo2xqx.rkkda.com/ Since the slug isn't as robust as some of the other
distros of Linux, does the slug have what is needed to do this. Looks like all
I need is a compiler. Thoughts?

Optware package changes are all recorded in subversion.

1) Follow the instruction on
   http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Optware/AddAPackageToOptware
to get optware subversion checkout;

2) Then do "svn log make/freeradius.mk | less" look for the commit that upgrades
it from 1.1.7, in this case it's 8749;

3) You'd want to "turn back the clock"
The command probably is "svn up -r8749"

4) Build toolchain, and try to build the package

I think I've noticed that in order to build unslung toolchain, you'd need host
gcc 3.x

Good luck,

Thanks for the clues. I built the package - details below.

But ipkg now refuses to install it! If I say:
   $ ipkg install freeradius_1.1.7-2_armeb.ipk
ipkg starts downloading the 2.0.5-2 package from the unslung/cross feed!

I've tried -force-downgrade, even -f /dev/null. But (as demonstrated with
strace) ipkg goes and reads the /etc/ipkg feed files & then downloads the
2.0.5-2 package.

I note that this package has a 'recommends' for freeradius-doc; putting that kit
in the same directory doesn't help.

The only way to persuade it to use the file specified on the command line is to
   $ mv /etc/ipkg /etc/ipkg-x; ipkg install freeradius_1.1.7-2_armeb.ipk; mv
/etc/ipkg-x /etc/ipkg

This seems excessively hard - if I explicitly specify a file, that's what I
want.

Is there an option that I'm missing? If not this seems like a (moderately
serious) bug.

Other thoughts?

Thanks.

T

Here's what it took to build this package - I'll make a wiki HOWTO when I've dug
out of the current crisis...meantime, perhaps this will help someone else.

$ svn co https://svn.nslu2-linux.org/svnroot/optware/trunk optware
$ svn log make/freeradius.mk | less
# r8749 is the rev that upgraded from 1.1.7
$ svn up -r8748 <-- We want the rev BEFORE the upgrading commit!
$ cd optware; make <platform>-target
$ cd <platform>; make directories toolchain ipkg-utils

Build fails because crosstool 0.38 isn't available.
Visit http://kegel.com/crosstool/ and find 0.43 is.

Edit optware/make/crosstool.mk to get the newer crosstools

$ make toolchain ipkg-utils
Ignore lots of glib doesn't build unoptimized errors...

$ make freeradius

Depends on openssl, site is down. Modify optware/make/openssl.mk to use a
mirror:

OPENSSL_SITE=http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.openssl.org/source

Depends on mysql - for some reason, the kit downloads into '.' rather than
'downloads/'.

$ mv mysql downloads/
$ make freeradius

Curses! ncurses-5.6.tar.gz isn't on the distribution site. ncurses.tar.gz has
5.7. Fetch it, put it in downloads/ and update make/ncurses (which mysql
wants).

$ make mysql

$ make freeradius
$ make freeradius-ipk

and freeradius_1.1.7-2_armeb.ipk is in builds/

You can try "ipkg install ./freeradius_1.1.7-2_armeb.ipk" This makes it clear
that you want to install from file.

For building optware/nslu2 (unslung) toolchain, it's probably easier just use
latest make/crosstool.mk and sources/crosstool.

Cheers,

I tried ./ as well as the absolute path to the package. ipkg still tries to
download the v2 pkg specified by the feed instead of using the file...

I don't have this problem when I build a newer version of a package; I have
private versions of bind, dhcp, openssl that all use the file when I specify it.

The strange behavior seems to be unique to the down-rev kit.

strace) ipkg goes and reads the /etc/ipkg feed files & then downloads the
2.0.5-2 package.
