Just in case it helps anyone... I get this problem regularly too, and it
causes a lot of problems since SMB shares mounted on Windows keep
getting disconnected. I have NFS on my slug too using UDP, and don't
seem to have problems there, so might it be a TCP issue too? Linksys
have now released the R29 source code, which appears to have a change to
the IXP425 NPE driver - might this be to address the same problem?

----- Posted by thodson at 1:08 AM on 2005-06-01 -----
+ I take it back; when the connection stops responding, NFS and
+ therefore presumably UDP fails too. It typically stops for a couple of
+ minutes, then resumes exactly as it was before failing.

Josh, Rwhitby et al,

Sorry if I sounded a little harsh - didn't mean it. I have been
looking into getting a cross environment set up for some weeks and I
do appreciate the help I have received in exploring the options (e.g.
co-linux). The problem has been that I haven't been able to find the
time to invest in getting up-to-speed on co-linux networking, knoppix
remastering, toolchain installation etc etc.

I just wanted to clarify this point, because I haven't been making the
appweb compilation "specific to the native build", but have been
maiking it "not specific to the cross build". It has purely been a
metetr of convenience to work on the slug native tool chain given the
time I have available - and the fact that appweb is a relatively small
package (complared to mysql for example).

I have been following the work [g2] has been doing with "sluggix" with
much interest, simply because it could open a door for me which may
well take months for me to repeat on my own.

The concept of being able to download an ISO, set up a bit of local
working area on the hard disk, pop-in the CD and just do cross-build
work is a fantastic for windows-locked package developers like myself.

At the moment I seem to be fighting learning cuves everywhere with
very limited time :-)

Thanks for all the work and support for this. I will get there in the end.

I'd be very happy to have my name against appWeb once I feel I can
contribute in an acceptable way.

Matt (aka copperbeech)

I also need to know exactly how to create the file as described in the
setup of apache while connected via telnet:
/etc/nsswitch.conf

I followed some examples of how to create files I found using Google.
I was still unable to get Apache to work. Any help would be GREATLY
appreciated.

Thanks,

I have just done a clean install of Unslung 4.20 and PHP-Apache. Apache
works fine for plain html pages. However, for any php pages it segfaults:

[Wed Jun 01 14:33:35 2005] [notice] LDAP: SSL support unavailable

This happens even with a simple:

<?php

?>

Any suggestions as to how to find out why this is happening?

You don't need to do this. If you don't have a working nsswitch.conf,
the apache package will create one for you at startup.

Can you reproduce the problem with php-thttpd, or with the standalone
php binary?

You could also try running apache in "foreground" mode, with "httpd -X".
If it still segfaults, try under gdb, like this: "gdb --args httpd -X".
Then if it still segfaults, issue the command "bt" to get a backtrace.

I am trying to use Active Directory authentication (ADS) with my
slug.

First has anyone done this? If not can anyone verify which of these
packages are avaialbe for the slug:

Samba 3 with winbind and PAM? I have seen the samba ipkg but am not
sure if it has winbind / PAM included.

Kerberos (heimdal or MIT)?

OpenLDAP libraries? It appears that maybe these are included in the
4.20 build but not sure if complete implementation or version.

Thttpd startup script has wrong PID file path: Looks in /opt/var/run
instead of /var/run. The result is that stop and restart fails.

I was a little careless last night when I was working on getting
Apache to run on my slug. I reinstalled the Linksys firmware and
rebooted the device. I then updated the uNSLUng firmware. Rebooted.
Then I forgot to /sbin/unsling the device. Instead I tried to install
Apache. Now the box will boot, but I can't connect to it. I try to
ping 192.168.1.77, but no response. I can't connect to the web
interface, nothing. Did I create a brick or is there a way to fix
this?

Thanks,
WB

And I was still unsuccessful in getting Apache to run.

When you set the title and description of a jpeg file in xp explorer
under properties, XP creates in the file one EXIF tag called 'WINXP'
with 2 fields called Title and Contents.

I'm trying to extract that 'WINXP' EXIF tag from the file with php-
thttpd. Extraction works, but I always get only the first caracter of
the field.

Looking on the net, it seems that it was a bug in PHP, which has been
corrected.
http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=31980

Is it possible to update the php-thttpd package to include that bug
fix ?

Yes, this bug is fixed in php 5.0.4, and we'll be upgrading to that
version of php soon.

Hi,

I tried to compile from the sources of the beta release. It starts
to compile but breaks 5 minutes into the build. When it starts, it
generates the following errors:

(source setup-env ; bitbake openslug-packages)
Environment set up for OpenSlug development.
NOTE: Using cache in '/home/arise/nslu2/openslug/tmp/cache'
NOTE: Handling BitBake files: / (0237/0487) [48 %]ERROR: setVar()

But it continues to work after this. It then breaks when working with
the libtool-native-1.5.10-r1 package. The "task do_compile" starts and
then breaks. I checked the log message, the last few lines are:

checking whether build environment is sane... yes

I'm running this compile on Debian Sarge with plenty of power and RAM.
I've also got all the packages (the ones mentioned on the page for how
to compile openslug from repos) installed.

Any ideas as to what is going wrong?

Thanks,
Jimmy

I've ran into a snag trying to change the password at the command
line. The following is everything I've done and where the problem
occurs. ***Note I used the Unslung instructions and the notes
provided in the unslung version 4.20 along with the wiki***

1) Tested Redboot – Success
2) Installed Firmware binary - Success
3) Tested Slug – Success
4) Used the Unslinging procedures – Success
5) Tested Slug – Success
6) Shut Down Slug – Detached harddrive - Restarted Slug – Telneted
Into Slug – Success
7) Attempted to use the shell script at:
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/ChangePasswordsFromTheCommandLine
Entered: !/bin/bash - Error Returned "No Such file or directory"
***Note: I tried this with the drive attached and got the same error.***

Any suggestions?

PS – I'm working towards updating ipkg and busybox before installing
any other services. Is this the right order? I'm also assuming I
should be updating ipkg and busybox with the drive attached…..I'm
sorta new to this whole linux, telnet, commandline stuff.

Oh, well, I guess this is just going to be one of those lifetimes.

I have successfully connected a port-powered 4x hub and
used the following devices (unslung 3.16):
- usb-ps2 adapter with mouse and keyboard
- serial adapter with serial printer
- usbvga adapter with monitor
- digital camera (Canon Powershot a200)
- CF-card reader
Not all (but several) at the same time, obviously.
The usb-port behaves strange: some devices _must_ be connected
at bootup. Inserting them at runtime crashes the NSLU2 (usb-ps2
adapter). Others must not be present during bootup (digital camera).

I would bet that your USB-printer works somehow if a linux driver
exists.

follow the instructions on:
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Unslung/Packages
on how to install packages:

# Make sure you've unslung to an external hard drive
or USB memory stick.

# ipkg update

# ipkg install unslung-feeds

# ipkg update

then install bash package:
ipkg install bash

Now the script should work

I've realised that a number of unslung package binaries contain
hardcoded paths to the build-time staging area. Though this is in most
cases harmless, it would be best to remove the problem...

It seems that this is another effect of the longstanding problem with
libtool-based sources packages having strange, hardcoded views about
where system libraries are to be found at run-time, which resulted in
users with .la files present in their /lib or /usr/lib directories being
unable to build unslung packages.

Though a few packages have taken their own solutions to the problem, I
think it would be good to have a consistent approach. Accordingly, I've
defined PATCH_LIBTOOL in the root makefile to invoke sed -i with an
expression that will modify a libtool script to behave correctly in the
unslung build environment.

The way to use it is, just after your libtool-based package has run
configure, run this: "$(PATCH_LIBTOOL) <path_to_libtool_script>"

Note that this is only necessary for packages that use gnu libtool.
Comments would be welcome.

An example can be found in apr.mk:

Has anyone considered creating a daemon that could run on this thing
and provide the boot image/connection to the WMA11B? I know that
http://www.turtlehead.co.uk/ has started a project where you can
replace the boot image your pc client sends to the device when the
device connects to the pc and gives it the capability to connect to an
itunes server. If there was a daemon on the NSLU2 that could serve a
boot image for this device the possibilities would become even greater.
I personally do not have the expertise to right such a daemon or I
would have since I cant quit thinking about why this hasnt been done
since Linksys did release the gpl for the WMA11B.

Anyone know of any other projects working on this?

The sequence here is important here. Suggest that you try again
following:-

1. Shut down the slug, un-plug the disk and re-boot it.
2. Enable telnet access.
3. Telnet in using root and uNSLUng
4. Change the password as required using the command passwd.
5. Hot plug your disk in and wait for file system to be mounted, this
can take some minutes. You can check this by accessing the web
configuration pages.
6. Copy the changed passwd file to two places using the two script
sections:-
cp /etc/passwd /share/hdd/conf/passwd
this changes the password file located on disk
followed by
cp /etc/passwd /usr/local/passwd
this changes another instance of the password file.

Corneliu,

First off thanks for the reply.  After reading through your ideas it certainly made sense and I'm sure it'll work.....hehe

I ran into a new/different problem now that makes everything impossible for the time being.  Basically the ipkg update isn't working.  I've looked at the wiki FAQ and it says that I either have a DNS problem or am behind a proxie.  I'm a little stumped on this one.  The NSLU2 is connected to a linksys WRT54G running stardard firmware version v2.04.4 .  The subnet on the NSLU2 is set to the same subnet as the router and the DNS server is set to the ip of the router.  So I think that is set correctly.  I am however running the DHCP.  I would think about editing the dhcpd.conf in /etc/ but it isn't in there?

Similarly I'm pretty sure I'm not behind a proxie (that I know of?).  But even if I was I can't find the ipkg.conf in /etc/.  Er um.........ok?  Ideas for a fix on this one?

PS - Yeah I know I'm an idiot but the learning curve is steep for us noobs. =)

WRONG
if NSLU is configured to use DHCP it should get it's
IP address and DNS servers addresses from the router
trough DHCP.
if static IP is used. Set the DNS servers address to
the one you router or PC is using (not to it's IP
address)

So I think that is set correctly. I am

This means that somehow you have a more up-to-date version of bitbake than
the source files.

>NOTE: Parsing finished. 0 cached, 464 parsed, 21 skipped, 0 masked.

The two nslu2-kernel .bb files were ignored (normally there would be 466
parsed.) That doesn't matter, the openslug build doesn't use those kernels.

>I'm running this compile on Debian Sarge with plenty of power and RAM.

*Uninstall* bitbake. I believe Python is picking up the site-packages files
from your bitbake installation. Alternatively you could do "svn up -r154"
in the directory from which you installed bitbake and re-install - this will
cause it to go back to rev 154, which is the one required to build
OpenSlug-1.12-beta.

I recommend against installing bitbake because of this problem - it's too
easy to get the wrong version. I think it may also be possible to avoid the
problem by setting the Python search path (as opposed to BBPATH, which only
gets used after the wrong bitbake python scripts have been loaded.)

I have generated an /unslung/rc.sysinit script file but it seems not to
work as expected. Also had little time to sort this due to sick child
in the house (now on the mend).

The script section that I am using is basically unchanged from that used
in 3.18 so sets up a small ram disk for /var and /dev. Something is
failing here, a df command indicates that both /var or /dev are still
running from hard disk!!. I am sure that this is because the ram disks
are being cancelled in some way because /var and /dev also both exist in
the existing disk tree structure as standard folders.

Some advice is needed if possible

What should I do with the existing /var /var.state /dev /dev.state
folders in the disk tree??

My gut feeling here is just to delete them all (booting to jffs2 and
deleting through /mnt/sda1/) followed by a re-boot but I am not too sure
of the outcome of this and would rather not rash my slug.

Also not too sure of the function of /var.state and /dev.state.
