I did run two different virus cleaner programs for the worm and it
seems to be gone for now although I am getting two or three copies
sent to me every day to delete.

Larry,

Sorry. I sent you the link to early. I just googled to try to find a
quick fix for your problem, but apparently this answer was tied to a
specific PC-configuration.

It seems as if you have a serious problem. If you could let us know
which version of Windows and of IE you're using we could provide more
help. Maybe others on this list know how to interpret the
errormessage...

I am running Windows 98 Second Edition
Version 4.10.2222 A

And

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Version 6.0.2800.1106

I think that there is one thing that should be paid attention to.
All of the error problems are occurring with every single program
that would normally launch the Dialer. The only difference is in the
error messages being returned by the program when it fails to detect
the ISP.

Possibly the worm changed a registry setting to its own program and
my cleaner failed to restore it.

I do have a copy of my older registry settings that I could restore
but I just upgraded to the last seventeen of Mocrosoft's security
patches and I just don't want to mess things up by restoreing old
registry settings that don't include them. I might even do more
damage than I have now if I do that.

Hi Everyone,
I ran scan disk. Everything was OK no problem. I then ran defrag and it
reported just before it finished, it was about 95% complete when it said
there is an error on the disk and defrag cannot defrag until it is repaired
Please run Scan Disk. So I ran it again and it still reports no prblems
found. But when I tried to run defrag again, same error message and defrag
will not complete the defragmentation of the drive. I am using Windows ME
and the computer is an HP 1.4 gighertz with 512 meg of memory. Anyone know
what to do here?

Hi ed,

You might try opening a, Dos Box, Command Prompt, whichever you call it
and trying running - Chkdsk C: /F.

It won't run in Windows mode, if it's like Win98 and XP it will ask if
you want to run it on the 'next boot'.

If that works and you reboot, re-run Scandisk, then Defrag to see if you
get a successful completion.

If it's any consolation to you Larry, you've got company.

There are two issues involving Windows 98 and dial up networking that
have frustrated me to no end over the years.

One is the problem you're having, when all of a sudden for no
apparent reason IE, your email program (or whatever) fails to
automatically connect to the internet. I have scoured every setting
I could think of to no avail trying to find an answer to that.
Finally, I just made it a policy to connect to the internet first
before I run any internet related programs, and I've been doing it
that way ever since.

The second problem is the "in some computers" incredibly slow
connection time to the internet. When one computer will dial up and
connect in a normal amount of time (about 20 seconds give or take)
while another computer will take 2 full minutes or more to connect.
One time I purchased two brand new identical computers from the same
company at the same time and set them both up identically with the
same software through and through. Guess what? Yup, one connects to
the net normally, and the other (from day one to this day) takes
several minutes to connect.

That's ok though, I got my revenge on Microsoft.

I took Bill Gates name off my Christmas card mailing list, that fixed
his little red wagon but good.

I had that same problem when I used Windows ME Ed. A year later my
hard drive died but I'm not so sure it was related to that error (I
had been hearing nasty grinding noises coming out of it, a very bad
sign for a hard drive). I just ignored the defrag message, in fact I
quit defragging the drive.

Contrary to popular belief your hard drive won't disintegrate if you
don't defrag on a regular basis. It's a good idea to defrag, but I
wouldn't lose any sleep over not doing it either.

Larry,

It might help to run Disk Defragmenter. For some reason, Windows 95 & 98 are
very sensitive to fragmentation. I have seen this numerous times at work
with problems clients have had. This always fixes it.

FWIW I've backtracked with 98-XP after doing updates with no problems.
Since the updates are almost always file updates and not any real registry
updates, it's no big deal.

Plus, you can always install a patch over again.

I can always mail you the M$ fix (published my M$) for MyDoom to make sure
it's gone. Believe it or not, it works well from what I hear.

I tried to follow the directions on this web page but I had some
problems. There is no radio button labeled "Use the following Dial-
up Networking Connection". There was a radio button labeled "Never
dial a connection" which was selected.

[Brian Binder] We'll want to see if we can change it to dial up your default
connection...

There were two other radio buttons which I tried labeled (1) "Dial
whenever a network connection is not present" and (2) "Always dial my
default connection". I received the same error message below for
both:

[Brian Binder] Use 'Always Dial my Default Connection' or whatever you named
your ISP dial-up connection.

The error message was:

Iexplore

This program performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

[Brian Binder] Don't you just love those errors? I'll give you an illegal
operation you @$#! Computer! ... ok just calm down Brian...

Anyways, this happens when you simply change the radio button, or is it when
you hit OK or Apply?

You may want to consider going through your add / remove programs and using
the repair feature of IE6. When you go to uninstall/modify it, it should
ask you if you want to repair it and you can choose yes.

Then try the setting and see what happens.

This kind of stuff shouldn't happen. It's because IE is so intertwined with
Windows OSes. When IE fails, so does half the other things on your PC.
Stupid, huh?

[Larry Thomas] I followed the directions and performed the Add/Remove

check out the settings on it and compare them to my desktop machine to see

might also look at some registry settings for both machines that are

Hey Larry,

Arg! There's a few things here that could really be helpful to you. I
don't know if you've tried deleting all your dial-up settings and re-adding
them again, but that can help in some instances. Here's one from MS that
I've used when I was ready to bring out the bat...

I would first try (for the heck of it) to create a new name for the DUN
service and set IT to be the default dialer in IE. Just make one called
'ISP' or something and have it set to be the default. Then try getting out
as usual. No good? Remove the original DUN connection. Still no good?
Try the link below. Unfortunately, it's long and tedious; but it's worth a
shot.

Does your ISP have a toll free number, if so call them and they will get you set
up right away or at least most ISP's will. The two that I have used have been
most helpful each time that I call them.

Subject: [NTO] I need help with my internet connection

   Hello Everybody,

I have a problem with my internet connection and I am hoping that someone
out there can help me. I am able to connect to the internet and send and
receive email and use my other internet programs ok right now. My problem
is that I now must first start the DUNS (Dial Up Network Services)
connection and click on "connect" in order to get connected to my ISP
before I can run any programs such as Eudora or Mozilla or MS Internet
Explorer. Before I had this problem, I could just run Eudora and then when
Eudora started, it would launch the DUNS dialog box and the DUNS dialog box
would automatically dial in to my ISP and then Eudora would check my mail
and download it once the connection was made.

Now when I start Eudora, it tries to download my mail without going on line
and of coarse, I get an error message "Host not found" and the error sound.
Then Eudora will not do anything else. I dismiss the error message and
click on the "check mail" button and I get the error message again.

I close Eudora and go to the short cut for the DUNS dialer and it connects
me to the ISP. Then I run Eudora and it downloads my mial just fine.

This problem is affecting all of my internet programs as I have said above
including my browsers which give the same error messages and a couple of
small programs for getting weather and setting my system clock which don't
give error messages but they just never finish - they freeze up and have to
   be closed.

I did get infected with the Mydoom worm before this happened and that could
be the cause of it but I don't know what to do now. I have downloaded two
cleaner programs for it and run them both plus an anti-virus program and it
has not helped. I just uninstalled the anti-virus program and that did not
   do anything either.

Does anyone out there have any ideas? Is there a web site where I might
get information to trouble shoot this problem?

   TIA

   Regards,

   Larry

I first got Katmouse to solve my problems with scrolling in Ecco but
scrolling unfocused windows is so darn useful that the odd time I don't have
Katmouse turned on I feel lost.

Also worth checking out if you're not using it already, is the TweakUI
setting for X-mouse:
-- Activation follows mouse (X-mouse)
I use it with an activation delay of 500 ms, but don't *ever* use the
Autoraise when activated - it breeds madness :-(

Assuming you still have the NoteTab pro setup program, just load that
into your new XP machine and run it.

If you need help moving your files from your Windows 98 machine into
the new one afterwards, just give us a shout.

Hello All,

Ed Brown says NTP is causing his browser to freeze. Both yesterday and today,
an email from the Clips group caused Outlook Express to hang on my PC. I
don't know whether these two events are related.

The symptom both yesterday and today was that "Receiving message 4 of 39" was
displayed, but no further downloading of email was occurring. I was still
able to use my browser to access web pages and after canceling the hung
"receiving..." message, I was able to SEND emails, but the 4th inbound message
again hung the system. After about 90 seconds, an error screen came up
informing me that my POP3 system had failed to respond for 60 seconds. In my
case, yesterday, I used MailWasher to delete the 4th message out of my inbox
on the server at my ISP (OptOnline.net). I didn't take careful note of the
origin of that message.) After that I was able to up/download emails
normally.

That same hung "receiving message 4 of ..." screen came up again tonight.
This time, I phoned the ISP Tech Rep who went through all the troubleshooting
procedures with no luck. He finally manually deleted the 4th message from the
server, and now I'm back running normally. Tonight's 4th message was from
John Zeman on the NTP Clips Yahoo group. The Subject was, "[Clip] Re: Getting
a particular word in a string".

I don't expect any solutions. I'm posting this only to document the problem.

I sent this once and it did not make it to the list. For some reason my
NoteTab Pro locks up when I select the browser to view the page I am working
on and I have to close it. Never can see the page. Any ideas???

Hello,

Does anybody here know something about optimization? I used the trial
version of Premium Solver (the cousin/big brother of Excel's built-in
Solver) to test a scheduling problem we will have to face once a year
(I'm trying to help some colleagues with their scheduling activities.
It seems as if our model is too big for the application, so I
couldn't really solve anything yet. If the model is not too big, it
could have to do with the constraints and variables, or with the
division/overlap of the preferences of all individuals. Anyhow, it
would be nice if one would get an overview of all possible conflicts,
but the solver tries to come up with the perfect solution. If that
can not be found the application simply states that it could not find
a solution... Since all variables are related it is a very complex
problem, I imagine).

Although I closely followed the (small scale) example as offered on
http://www.solver.com/solutions/schoffices.htm I'm stuck.

I tried to solve a situation where we have about 125 individuals,
that need to be located at 40-50 available cities (all with a fixed
amount of available spaces - city1 could host two individuals, city2
has room for three, etc). I asked too much...

Well, if anyone would happen to know how to solve this, I'd be
interested to hear from you (list or private).

Regards,

Hugo

I have a similar problem. It occurs when I do a Control+
double-click on a url. There's a Windows error message
and NoteTab stops responding.

Ctl+H works though.

I've tried 3 different browsers and it's the same with
each.
And with NTB Light as well as Std.
Any ideas??
John

Configure your browser in View | Options | Internet and see if it
still happens. You might try putting it in the other browser also
in case if it works there.

What browser are you using and what version of Windows?

The version of Windows used is likely where the answer will lie.

(Anything pre NT, 2000, XP is very susceptible to things like this)

Jody,
You were right as usual. For some strange reason nothing was in either
box, they were both blank. How they were removed I have no idea. I put
IE in the first and Mozilla in the second and both work good now. The
mystery is what removed them from the selection box. Thanks much for
your help.

Have by any chance also installed OpenOffice?

For some inexplecible reason the two clash occasionally.

Yes, OpenOffice has been on for along time. But it is very slow to open now.
And it is even slower using linux, which I do as I have a dual boot and have had
for well over a year now.

Open Office and NoteTab clash, NoteTab freezing. I've stated before that never
can NoteTab be open and never can I print to a printer with MS Word, Internet
Explorer and so on. It may well be something to do with older operating systems
and a program which now stretches across so many operating system versions...

FWIW, I just did a little test of copying text from NTP 4.95 into OOo
1.1.0. System is a P4-1.8 with 768MB RAM running XP Pro SP1. No problems
noted. Also, you can adjust the memory usage of Open Office to get better
results (whatever OS, it works) by going to Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org-
>Memory. I have mine adjusted to "Use for OpenOffice.org = 32MB" and
"Memory per object = 5.0MB", which gives me respectable performance. For
me OOo opens and flatout runs better than any MS Office product, but your
mileage may vary.
