Netscape 7+ has a memory leak issue when run on Win98 SE. See
http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2474 for discussion on this
and other issues with Netsacpe. In fact, you may want to bookmark
that site to keep up with Netscape/Mozilla info.

Meantime, you may want to switch over to the highly stable and
appreciated Firefox. I hear really good things about it.

Glad I did. At least I got a reply. And did not have the address
which I lost and I lost all of them but the HTML list. Still think It
belonged there as it happens while writing html.

Jody,
Thanks for the reply. It happens only as I write HTML that is why I
thought that I had used the HTML list. I really did not know which
one to use on this issue. I did not think that I sent it on the basic
list. It may have been the only list that I had available at the
time. (Of course that is all I use NoteTab for any way :-).HTML that
is. ) It could have been a basic issue in my mind when I sent it so
if I sent it on the basic list that may be why. Is there an archive
of messages somewhere?

I have two ad ware removal programs that I run daily as well as an
antivirus program. (Spybot and Lavasoft-both updated daily and
inspite of rumors they both co-exist peacefully on my machine)

I am supposed to be signed up for all the list. I just changed ISP's
and reset it to come in on my yahoo address, then changed it again to
come into my new address that this mail uses.
Thanks again,
Ed

Hi Ed,

The lockup problem seemed to have been fixed awhile back and has
started again on some isolated machines. I don't know what has
happened to cause it, but I think it is external to NoteTab. You
can go through the basics though of configuring the browser(s)
under the Internet tab in Options. If your browsers.dat file
found in NoteTab's main folder is not the default, you might want
to delete it and see what happens after you restart NoteTab. If
you install NoteTab again to the same location the file will be
installed again.

There's been some nasty adware/spyware going around that is
picked up at certain web sites. You might try getting some of the
adware removal tools and run that to see if it fixes the problem.
I don't want to cause a lot of posts about what adware removal
tools to get, but you might search for "lavasoft" and get theirs
to try. Check out the NoteTab Off Topic list for more information
and links for that sort of software. You might try using two of
them.

You may sign up for the different discussion mailing lists from
either of the links below. We use yahoogroups for the lists.
Please read the following if you decide to sign up!

If you sign up for any of the discussion lists, please do *not*
post questions about NoteTab Clips and other scripting languages
(such as RegExp, Perl, CGI, etc.) on the NoteTab Basic list.

More difficult tasks should be posted on the Clips or Scripts
lists. HTML should be posted on the ntb-HTML list and off topic
discussion takes place on the ntb-OffTopic list. The MailBag
Assistant, Easy Thumbnails, Easy Imager, and Album Express lists
are for discussion of those programs.

The most important thing to remember is please leave the NoteTab
Basic list for the *_very basic_* use of NoteTab. The other lists
are a lot more flexible, for instance, Clips can be and are
welcomed on the HTML list. Thanks!!!

The HTML list was fine to post on; I only suggested this list for
the adware/spyware tools. Thanks for running them. So, that does
not appear to be the problem. I think in it best on this list too
because of troubleshooting if we can do any. It keeps the other
lists for more of what they are intended for.

There's quite a few threads on the browser lockup problem on
various lists. You might search for browser lockups or browser
locks up...

Is it IE that you are using? You might try another browser for
now. I think a work-around might be to configure it in View |
Options | Custom Launch. The path would look something like the
following with the extra code at the end:

D:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe ^**

If you are using the default it would be:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe ^**

You use the Launch Document tool that you can put on the Toolbar
and/or the Shortcut menu both found in Options under those tabs
to view in browser. The icon is like a white paper with a
lightening bolt in it. It is also found under the Tools menu
(Ctrl+T), but you have to have it on the Toolbar in order to use
Ctrl+T, the keyboard shortcut.

Can you send me your "appcompat.txt" found in your documents and
settings\temp folder please. Oh, go to Windows Explorer (or My
Computer) and right click over NotePro.ini and choose Properties.
Click on the Compatibility tab and see how it is configured. If
you are in XP, it should not be checked. If you are in XP and the
box is not checked, try checking the box and run as Win2000 just
to see what happens. There are a small amount of you with the
problem, so I guess it is going to be in some configuration or
Windows OS, or a common file(s) loaded on your computers. Perhaps
even some common hardware like a video card.

C:\DOCUME~1\EVENIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER140.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Also, if the following file is not very big and text based, could
you send it. Try opening it in NoteTab first and see if you get
binary warnings. If so, don't bother sending it.

C:\DOCUME~1\EVENIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER140.tmp.dir00\NotePro.exe
.mdmp

Jody,
Meant to get back to your sooner. I followed your suggestion and deleted the
browsers.dat file and rebooted this ole thing and she works good now. And that
was great for I was working on some Web Sites and need to check what I was doing
before I FTPed it up to the hosting site. I will probably have some more fun?
soon as I plan to try once again to get FireFox to be the second browser. Since
it is a much later edition now perhaps it may.
Thanks again for your good support.

Absolutely Ed. I use NoteTab exclusively to write my PHP code (PHP
is just plain ol' text like HTML is).

The only thing is NoteTab doesn't yet support PHP syntax
highlighting. For that, I have to use other text editors. A free
one I recently stumbled upon that supports PHP syntax highlighting
can be found here:

Also give a try to SciTE. I am sure it will suite your fancy. This is my

Second that. The bliss of folding! I've used it beside Notetab a couple of
years now. Not as much as I would like to though. I'm not a person that
switches between programs easily. Change the highlight color and I get
confused. :-o

Hi Ed,

from my experience too SciTE gives a really good companion to NoteTab
for syntax highlighting of PHP and (lots of) other languages.

I found it helpful to become a little familiar with it's options
handling / setup (which is mainly done using plain text files, esp of
interest may SciteUser.properties) and with the flat but comprehensive
HTML-documentation that describes almost all of the setup options in
detail. (If the SciTE HELP topic from the Help menu doesn't work for you
there is probably just a configuration problem in one of the properties
files ;) -- simply go to your SciTE's install directory and open
SciTEDoc.html from the help subdir there).

Below I'll add some lines from my SciTEUser.properties as well as a
clip that I use to "transparently" highlight files from NoteTab using
SciTE by "overlaying" the NoteTab window.

Since almost any of SciTE's properties can be set directly from it's
command line there may be a lot more of configuration to "transparently"
switch over (e.g. font settings, tab settings ...) -- if any needed at
all ;)

Regards
Stefan

Normally I see it used meaning that you can like hide text so to
speak. In say regular HTML you might fold up the heading so that
just <html> is seen until the body part of the coding. It makes
for less scrolling therefore faster editing.

Folding refers to the tree type of display you have in Windows Explorer on
the left side. You can scroll down the list of folders under the C:\ root
directory and you come to C:\Program Files. You see a + beside it and you
click on the + and it turns into a - and an indented list of the subfolders
under it expands so that you can see them. If you click on the - , the
folders collapse and the - is replaced by a + and the subfolders disappear
- they fold up into the parent C:\Program Folder but they are still there.

There is at least one text editor called Treepad that has this Explorer
Tree style of folding notes for going from topic to topic. Currently
NoteTab's outline files cannot do this. All topic headings are listed on
the left side and you cannot create subheading which can be hidden in the
fashion of Windows Explorer. Eric has said that he has this feature on his
to do list for Version 5.0 when it comes out.

Folding is like putting variable-width accordian pleats in
your text -- similar to a chinese lantern. Collapse the fold
and part of the text disappears. It is still there, in the
background hidden in the folding buffer, but it is not shown
on the screen.

Unfold the section and it reappears on the screen.

This feature is very handy when editing long pages of code,
etc., or when making comparisons.

It has been a standard part of several DOS and *NIX editors
for several years but is just recenly becoming populsr in
Windows-based applications.

In HTML, you could fold/collapse your completed HEAD
section, your FOOTER section and that completed logo/header
each in its own fold and have only the remaining BODY
section visible. When you complete another section just fold
it out of sight. If you need to view a hidden section of
code just unfold it and it reappears in place.

The folding/unfolding is usually accomplished by clicking on
a mark in the left-hand gutter. The mark is usually a line
when the section is unfolded and a mark (*<{<#), etc., when
folded. Nested folds are not uncommon.

Hi Richard (to Off-topic and cc'd to Richard)

I was away for a week and followed this thread for the three days it ran
until 5 days ago when it petered out, with Larry's last message. It took me
a long time to figure out what you were after too - mostly because I'd
forgotten that one of the clip libraries is "PasteClips"! When I saw that
and then went back and read what you'd originally written it suddenly made
perfect sense :-)

You got good advice (especially from Larry who I think was the first to
figure out what you were after).

If, as several others had suggested, you are just starting with Notetab and
wanted eventually to become proficient in writing your own clips then you've
probably got a lot to chew over. On the other hand, if you want to
accomplish the specific task you describe I think the answer (at least as
far as minimizing keystrokes goes) might be this program: RoboType 3 (from
PCMag)

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,427373,00.asp

It used to be free but unfortunately they now charge approx $14.00/year for
unlimited downloads of any of their excellent utilities (and no longer
include source).

With it running in the systray then in *ANY* other program that allows you
to enter text, type your chosen abbreviation followed by a "/" and it will
be replaced. So if you set it up so that your have Ed's address loaded in it
as "ed" and John Jones' address loaded as "jj" then typing *JUST*

ed/ or jj/ will replace it with the text you want. (It also has some neat
macro type functions that allow you to insert today's date etc.) - no need
to use the clipboard at all.

Do you find yourself typing the same phrases and paragraphs repeatedly?
Perhaps you prepare business documents that contain standard paragraphs. Or
maybe you're a tech-support provider and you have to answer the same
questions over and over via e-mail. Do you constantly have to type the same
long and complicated URLs? You could save your reusable text in a document
and cut and paste from there, but that approach is clumsy. Some programs
have macro expansion facilities, but not all. RoboType 3, which adds a
text-expansion feature to almost any Windows program, is a better solution.
You define abbreviations for the words, phrases, and paragraphs that you
frequently type and RoboType 3 does the rest, replacing your abbreviations
with the expanded text. This latest update of RoboType includes numerous
enhancements. A new groups feature lets you organize your abbreviations by
category. A new tag feature lets you use variables such as date and time
when defining expansion text. And you'll find many smaller refinements
throughout the program.

RoboType 3 runs under Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP. The
Microsoft Visual C++ source code for RoboType 3 is provided with the utility
for those interested in seeing how the program works. Note that PC Magazine

Hi Alec,
Thanks for the tip on RoboType 3 (from PCMag). At the moment I'm trying to
remember where I read about a small program that will search any document
for the purpose of identifying the "highest use" of every word in the
document. In other words, this email can be scanned by hundreds of programs
as to its number of words, sentences, etc., but not the order--highest to
lowest--of the words used in creating this or other documents. The purpose
of such a program is to control "over-used" or "over-worked" words in one's
writing. Example: I dislike using "I" even when it's a first person
account. So I write often in the second person. That's a cold and passive
language though. Good for text books or manuals. If anyone knows of such a
program, please do let me know.
Thanks,

Hi Barry,
I downloaded WURDZ about 40 mins. ago. I was shocked to see how many times I
used "I" in a 3800 word document: 92 times!
"IN" came in at 52 times; "YOU" repeated 44 times;
"WITH" = 26 times, and so on. I don't know what to make of it...yet. This is a
technical report that involved me in the majority of it's development so I can
see "I" as getting a large play. Seems like a good program for any one
interested in words and their frequency of use in an individual's writings.
Surprisingly, not one Neanderthal grunt-word showed up: no "NO!," "MINE!,"
"GO!," or "GET YOUR OWN SOUP!" appeared.

Wouldn't worry about it Blake As long as you thing that it reads well, then
there's no problem. If it's written in the first person singular then
it's impossible to avoid using 'I' a lot of the time.

Take care. Barry UK

Hello Everybody,
I would like to ask your help about a good 'Anti pop-up' program you know / use.
I have some old program called "Pop-Up Stopper" version 2.2 and it works fine as
far as 'normal' windows are involved.
But it does not stop those small windows poping and asking to install something
or change the home-page.
Sometimes the 'fight' with those popups cause me to use the task manager to
close IE.
Recently found a "Popup Blocker Pro" program, it described what it can do, so I
installed it, the results were bad and it was removed after one day - I would
not recomend it.
So, if anyone knows / uses such a program and is 'happy' with it, please let me
know.
Many thanks in advance.
